I'm using a 3rd party software keyboard and every time I plug my Transformer into the dock or turn it on with the dock connected, I get a message saying I should use the ASUS soft keyboard for "compatibility reasons." Can you turn this notification off? It's annoying.
I was just writing a post about this when I saw yours. When I have a 3rd party keyboard enabled the dock keyboard wont work. Can you confirm this?

No, I cannot. My dock keyboard works just fine. I just have to hit "Okay" on the notification to make it go away.
I am running the Hacker's Keyboard, by the way. What are you using? I can try it out to see if I get the same error.

So I recently bought the keyboard for my prime. I love it, but you have to set the IME to the stock android or the asus keyboard for it to work well. Neither of those have a split keyboard so when I take the keyboard dock off and just use the tablet I have to go manually switch IME keyboards to a split keyboard (thumb keyboard).
It would be awesome if someone could make an app for the TP that would set the keyboard depending on if it were docked or not would be awesome.

I too use Thumb Keyboard but it doesn't seem to affect it when I dock my prime. The icon in the tray with the 2 lines, down arrow and wide U shows up when I dock and the keyboard functions normally. When I undock, my last used IME is there (in this case, Thumb Keyboard). I just assumed it auto-switched the IME when you docked it.
What you are looking for exists already App called keyboard manager. Must have app for this thing if you have the dock.

Agreed. It just works.
Cool, thanks, that was what I searched for.
FYI all SwiftKey X tablet version works great with the dock hardware keyboard.
I think every on-screen keyboard will work with the dock as long as you are using a stalwart englisg QWERTY layout. The problems begin when you are using a qwertz layout with spezial letters like ä, ü, ö and ß and a non standart on-screen keyboard like thumb keyboard or swift keyand connect your dock.
the problem with most non-asus keyboards is not the 'normal' keys. Most will work using the dock. The problem starts when you want to use other keys like shift, alt en capslock. That's why some sort of automatic switching needs to be done when the dock is connected or disconnected. I've found an app for the original transformer that does exactly this but it doesn't seem to work so well for the transformer prime.
Hey all,
I love my Prime and i appreciate the work Asus is doing to provide the best possible end user experience. But there is one issue with the keyboard dock which keeps me bugging ever since i got the first model of the Transformer.
Most of us prefer their own onscreen keyboard choice over the "Asus Keyboard". For example i love and use the default android keyboard and thus i am required to switch to "Asus German keyboard" everytime i dock my Prime, else important keys like Y/Z or Ä/Ö/Ü will not be mapped correctly.
I suggest adding the following option to the "Asus customised settings":
- Automatically switch to last selected "Asus Keyboard" when docked and return to previously chosen input method on undock
There is an app available for rooted users which kinda does the job, and demonstrates that it is possible to automatically switch input methods: Keyboard Manager But i think the auto switch feature is essential to non-root users too.
How do you guys think about that? Should we forward this request to Asus?

I am confused. My Prime does that already.
Using Thumb Keyboard. When docked, it asks to switch to ASUS keyboard. Undocked and back on Thumb.

Using the default android keyboard undocked. As soon as i dock the tablet i just get a message saying "change to asus keyboard to keep consistency". But it does not switch automatically.
If you got an US (QWERTY) dock, you may not notice the difference because the keys are mapped the same anyways. For example in Germany Z and Y are inverted, and they will not be mapped correctly unless the Asus Keyboard is active.
I am on version .11, you?
Yes, US keyboard.
On .14
When docking, it asks to switch to ASUS keyboard. There is a check box so it won't ask again. When undocked, Thumb Keyboard is back.

If you have root, get KM Launcher - it'll let you set the docked and un-docked keyboard. I'm using swiftkey X tablet with the t'former standard for un-docked and docked respectively.

Hi all.
Is there a keyboard apk that has arrow keys, like for EVO phones, that can be used with Prime when it is not docked?
is it even possible with ICS?
It's nice to have them on physical keyboard, but when "screen" is alone, it's hard to type anything serious without them...

Try Hacker's Keyboard. Make sure to mess around with the settings to get the keyboard to your liking.
Thumb Keyboard FTW!
Installed Hackers keyboard and configured to take over as default, but ICS complained abot it being possibly incompatible with the physical dock's keyboard...although I didn't see any problems yet.
Anybody having a hint about this?

Ignore it. I believe the phrase says something like 'using a different keyboard may not be compatible with the dock experience'. Pfft. Who cares about a different 'experience '? That's why we want a different layout!
And I love thumb keyboard! I got it on sale a while ago but I would pay full price for it again since it is so useful.

thumb and dock...
I have installed thumb keyboard....
i have to switch keyboards when using dock.
thumb is not compatible with the german dock.
(while still using german settings in thumb)
the dock keys are not only changed, when thumb is on - some keys still
have no effect.
any solution?
regards

If you are rooted, check out Keyboard Manager in the Market. It allows you to specify different keyboards in Portrait, Landscape and when docked.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ne0fhykLabs.android.utility.kmLauncher
Works a treat.
Personally I use either Hackers (great for terminal work) or TouchPal Keyboard when not docked.
Hope this helps.

Ahhh, thanks for that app recommendation, been looking for something like that forever!
1: if i used a usb hub and had a bluetooth keyboard (assuming i need an adapter that would come with it) and a bluetooth mouse (adapter again) Would they both work?
Im currently got my prime hooked up to my HDTV and i use the TV settings to do splite screen so i can play wii/xbox/ps3 at the same time. but i dont want to have to get get up just to type
2: depending on the answer to question 1. How do i get the onscreen keyboard to come up when the keyboard dock is plugged in. i know it doesnt make sense but as i explain in question 1 it's plugged into my TV so getting up type is looooooong

1: The tf201 has bluetooth built in, so shouldn't need a bluetooth adapter to use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
2: To pull up the onscreen keyboard with the keyboard dock... When typing in a text field, a little keyboard icon will show left of the clock in the notifications bar... Click this, and a settings popup will appear. At the top of the popup, it'll say "Use physical keyboard", click it to off and the onscreen keyboard will show whenever you select a text field.

The instructions on your particular bluetooth keyboard and mouse should include the pairing instructions. To get to the bluetooth settings on your prime, it's under wireless in settings. Turn on your prime's bluetooth and follow the directions for pairing given by your keyboard and mouse manuals.

hi everyone!
i just ordered the white LTE model and am SO excited. however i have ordered it without the keyboard (got a good deal and its only available in black atm anyway), so i was wondering whether the UI changes like the 'windows taskbar-like' app launcher on the bottom of the screen also appear with other bluetooth keyboards? i understand they appear with the keyboard dock even when they aren't physically connected so it isn't triggered by a physical recognition or NFC, but it could be specific to the keyboard docks bluetooth profile for example.
anybody know for sure or able to try it?
I use a third-party keyboard and the "laptop mode" does not turn on with it. I do wonder if there is a way to turn it on tho, would be nice
Same here, would like to have the 'laptop UI' with a bt lenovo keyboard with trackpoint.
Anyone ?
Thanks.
I´m working with a logitech bluetooth kbd and would be awesome to have the laptop UI....
