Last I knew, one click root no longer worked on the Fascinate after the 2.2 update. Are you wanting to stay stock and just root or are you planning on moving on to one of the custom ROMs. I believe all the custom ROMs contain root so no need to root before going to one of them unless you want to root to use titanium backup to backup all your apps. If that is the case or you want to stay stock and just root the just flash CWM in ODIN, then flash the su + busybox file in CWM.
Download these files:
ODIN
CWM-recovery-all-3-30-fix
su-2.3.6.1 + busybox 1.19
ODIN and CWM files stay on computer, su + busybox file gets placed on phone sd card
Double click the ODIN file to open ODIN
Power down phone and pull battery
Hold volume down button while plugging phone into usb cord connected to pc
Yellow triangle will appear on phone and furthest left rectangle on ODIN will change to yellow
Click PDA button, find CWM file and double click on it, click Start button, should take 7 seconds
Close ODIN, unplug USB cord, put battery in phone but don't power on
Hold volume up, volume down, and power buttons until samsung logo flashes twice
As soon as samsung logo appears for second time, let go of all three buttons
You should be in CWM, volume buttons to scroll to "install zip from sd card", hit power button
Scroll to "choose zip from sd card", power button
Find the su + busybox file, scroll to it, power button
Scroll to Yes, power button
When that finishes, soft menu key until you are back at the main CWM menu where "Reboot system now" will be highlighted, power button to reboot phone, and you are rooted.

2 questions. 1, does the work on the new OTA? 2, does this wipe the phone?
Friend did the OTA, and it broke root. Need to find a way to root without clearing out the phone.
Thanks

No, this will not clear data. It merely establishes root and flashes a custom recovery, CWM. Haven't tried rooting from the newest OTA.

I broke my phone, now it's back. I rooted it, installed CWM again, and I'm running into trouble. When I try to boot into recovery through Rom Manager, it asks if I'm sure I want to, I hit ok, and it doesn't do anything.

Try a hard reset into recovery. See if that works.
Launch stock recovery, go to install update.zip and hit the home button. Should get you to clockwork.

How do I do the hard reset? Sorry, I'm new to the phone.
Shut your phone off. Hold volume up, down, and the screen on/off button at the same time until the "samsung" comes up on the screen. From there your phone will boot into the stock recovery. Use your volume up/down buttons to navigate the menu, scroll to install "update.zip" then select if by pushing the home button. From there you should boot into clockwork.

It starts installing, then says

Sounds like you might have deleted the update.zip file that is needed to launch CW from your SD card.
Go back to this post to either start from the beginning or to just download the file and put it back on your sd card:

Why won't this feature work on my phone, I have put the update.pkg on the root of my sd card, but when I select the option in the menu the screen just goes blank and does nothing?
I'm sure to go in to factory reset or update via sd card u hold volume rocker and the power button .
Sometimes it dosent find the update file on the sd card u have to try a few times or leave the phone to rest for a while before u try and update again.
finding update on sd card
Yes, when you are going to boot you press and hold both volume buttons and press the power button also
Continue pressing until your menu comes and it should automatically have the option highlighted to update.
You then press the camera button to choose what is highlighted. What should come up is a menu of what is on your SD card and there you should see your "update.pkg" file. You use your volume keys to scroll up and down the menu.
Once you have highlighted the correct file, you once again press the camera button and the process should begin.
Im pretty sure this is the right procedure, I haven't done it in a while because I have StreakMod installed, which is just a different recovery image, but the manipulation of the recovery process is the same.
Please correct me people if I'm wrong...
You're essentially correct. However, there is no file list that pops up when you hit the update option. What does pop up is a mention that you're going to flash the update, and to hold the volume up button down to shut the Streak off if you don't want to.
Cheers guys figured it out, seemed to work fine after I flashed the recovery image in flashmode.
Alright, so I'm just trying to root the stock rom of Gingerbread 2.3.5 on this phone,
I read the howto's and one of my biggest questions is - am I going to have to use Odin each time I want to enter cwm? because at this point the only way I can enter Cwm recovery is through flashing the cwm_recovery_all.tar through Odin but it only works once or twice.
The normal way from the phone powered off is to (use the three finger method) :: hold volume up and down an the power button,,, and keep holding till there Samsung comes up then flashes black screen,,, then release power button while continuing to hold volume up and down till it enters recovery mode
...
Though most all custom ROMs have the option when powering off the phone with a long press,, "reboot" : and chose "recovery"
.

Yes that's the exact guide, I'm using a Win XP VM and using the ODIN 1.84 - and I have everything installed, the custom recovery just doesn't like to stay on..
. Unplug your phone and click RESET in Odin. Repeat Step 5 to get the phone back into download mode and recognized by Odin. Using the PDA button, navigate to the "stock_kernel.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier, select it, and press START. You'll again be notified in Odin once this process has completed (succeeded 1 / failed 0).
9. Unplug your phone and re-insert the battery.
10. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons. While holding them, press the power button. Hold all three simultaneously until you see "SAMSUNG" appear TWICE. This will boot your phone into CWM 2.5 red recovery. If your phone boots up normally here and not into recovery, just wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
11. Using the volume rocker, navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.
12. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select with the power button.
13. Navigate to the "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.
14. When you're advised of completion, press the MENU softkey to go back to the previous CWM Recovery screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."

I did this, and made sure it installed, I have superuser installed and working and I can reset it to where the Samsung will appear twice, but when I do it, and it appears twice, it never goes into CWM recovery.. always stock...
You need a custom kernel for cwm to stick. You should be able to boot into cwm after the initial flash (Odin with battery out then 3 finger to boot), but it won't stick without a custom kernel.

Download a ROM for your S3 that you know will work (Stock Samsung or CM10 or something stable) from the S3 Android Development section (Should be a zip file).
Copy it to your SD Card and reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery.
Then backup everything by selecting "Backup And Restore"> "Backup".
Then select Format Dalvik and Format Cache, then go into Mounts and Storage and format your /System.
After this return to the main menu and install the ROM you downloaded earlier.
Hi So I am stuck in download mode when I tried to root my Fascinate with odin today it got a fail 1 success 0. I have tried holding down the power button for 10 seconds and a battery pull to no avail. Help would be greatly appreciated.
I would suggest that you get a .pit and re partition while you are going back to stock.

Thank you for responding but I have not rooted yet the problem occurred when I was trying to root.
are you following the [GUIDE] from droidstyle?? Section 6
Section 6: How to root stock froyo or gingerbread(This is not needed if your flashing a custom rom)
Downloads these files to PC,
Samsung drivers-
Odin (computer program)-
CWMALL 2.5 (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it)-
"su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders)-
Modified stock Froyo kernel (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it). This file is only necessary if you're rooting Froyo. It's not necessary for Gingerbread-
Instructions:
1. Install Samsung drivers on your computer.
2. Open Odin on your computer. (You may need to disable antivirus programs on your computer and/or phone for this to work properly.)
3. Power off your phone and remove the battery.
4. Plug the stock USB cord that came with your phone into a powered USB port on your computer (usually on the back of the computer).
5. Press and hold the "volume down" button on your phone, and continue to hold it while plugging the USB cord into your phone. This will put your phone into download mode. You'll see a large yellow triangle on the screen of your phone. (Let go of the volume button at this point.) You will also see one of the small boxes in Odin turn yellow, as well as "Added" appearing in the message box.
6. Click the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the "CWM2.5_Voodoo.tar.md5" file you downloaded earlier. This file does not include a voodoo kernel and will not perform the voodoo lagfix conversion. It's only named as such to note that it is compatible with voodoo kernels.(make sure auto reboot is unchecked, although it should be by default)
7. Click START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1 / failed 0) and your phone's screen will go blank.
*** Step 8 is only for rooting Froyo. If you're rooting Gingerbread, skip Step 8 and proceed to Step 9. ***
