[Q] Broken display - need data - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening...
Tonight I had an accident with my wife's SGSII, resulting in a broken display. The phone works as it's supposed to, however, the display is black.
Since it's not my phone, and the phone's only 10 days old, I still haven't rooted it, making efforts like ADB seem like a waste of time, in order to get her data back.
Any good suggestions?
Please hurry, by this time tomorrow I may very well be hanging from a tree if I fail to find a sollution, my wife says, hehe.

Broken screen, the display is black ..but phone works as it's supposed to?
That doesn't make much sense.

How do you know if the phone works if the screen is black?? can you explain more...

Well, I do agree to some extent, hehe.
I meant to explain that the phone gets e-mails, SMS's, incoming calls etc., but I can't see anything.

What did you try allready?
Battery out? Reset?...?

I've tried battery out, reset, connecting to Kies, a longshot using ADB, but no go.
In order to use ADB and ScreenCast I need to enable USB Debugging Mode, but I can't really see that happening, since I can't see anything.

I've tried... but thanks to a password locking the phone, it's a no-go

Help : Looking for tear down instructions

I lost the screen on my Verizon touch pro. I got a replacment phone but want to get the contacts and some other stuff out of my broke phone. I have been on this forum searching for days for ideas on how to do this. would it be possible to swap out the guts between phones long enough to get the info out? If so is there and instructions for tearing apart this phone? Any other ideas. I have to return my broken phone so I have to try something soon. Thanks

Might be a long shot, but if your phone is only missing the screen and it still powers on, you may be able to use MyMobiler and control it remotely from the PC.

Thanks, I tried that. It will not conect. I have a password on my phone, so it's locked and will not sync. I also don't have MyMobiler on the phone.
MyMobiler will work on my new phone.

MyMobiler should install to the phone automatically, but if your device is password protected, then I am afraid you are out of luck...

HD2 glitch preventing usage

I successfully rooted my HD2 some time ago and have used various ROMs on it. I currently use that Core Cell Evo ROM. Two nights ago I accidentally spilled a little water on the phone and immediately turned it off and took out the battery. I let it dry for a day but ever since my phone will turn back on and boot into windows, but once it's there it will constantly have the volume screen pop up & show the volume go up & down and will not recognize anything I do with it. I thought to try and re-install the rom but with the volume issue it won't even allow me to sync the phone with my PC and the 'CustomRUU.exe' file just says 'communication error'.
is my phone done for or is there anything i can do?
(note: i've even unloaded a whole can of air duster in every crack i could find on the phone)
i'm pretty sure, your volumekeys are "damaged" or short curcuited.
i think, they're sending a "press" to the phone, even when you don't press them..
it would be nice, if there was a "hack" to dissable those two keys..i think with that you could use your phone normal..without volume control but pretty full usage.
you're not able to get into bootloader right? this would be your chance to flash via costumruu..but if my guess is right, you cant go into it...

correct, i can't do anything with it due to the volume key problem. i suppose i should look into dissambling the phone and seeing if i can just pull out the button all together.
yeah but if the short curcuit is on the mainboard, this won't help...
so i would look for any .cab which disables the keys..
one problem is already there: how to install it?
DN41
edit: i'm pretty sure you can disable them by registry...you need to get access to the phone via activesync or via the phone itself....

i've thought of similiar things myself, although when i connect the phone to my pc it continues to do the volume up/down glitch and won't allow me to actually use active sync. mobile device center says 'not connected' and the phone doesn't show up in windows explorer either.
i talked to a local cell phone repair store but all they said was "all we can do is take it apart and clean it but if that doesn't fix it then we can buy the phone off of you as a parts phone".
thats really bad..all programs i know to get access to a pda needs a running active sync connection...
DN41
well, just so everyone knows..
an HD2 can bounce off of your dash and severely crack your windshield and still be perfectly fine...
but the slighest bit of water and you're screwed.

Phone Permanently Bricked?

Please bare with me.
This is the second time this particular problem has happened to my device.
So I was on the tram coming back from my maths exam today.
(Running a ROM with Hardcore's SpeedMod K2-15)
I decide to change the song, all of a sudden, my screen turns black and I can't turn my phone back on. I as soon as it happened I thought uh oh. (the battery was at 74%.
So I tried to reboot my phone, didn't work.
Tried to get into download mode, didn't work.
Tried to get into recovery mode, didn't work.
Went to see if anything happened if I put in my charger AND USB cable. Both instances nothing happened.
When the incident happened last time, I was about to have it shipped to Samsung, was in the car on the way there and I was still pressing the power button in hope that it would work. Low and behold, it turned on, I flashed a different ROM and kernel and was on my merry way until today.
After browsing Q&A for around an hour the only other instances I've found with this problem are my original thread (around a month ago) when the same problem occurred.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302645
And another one I found today whilst browsing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289063
also here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18139062
So up to my knowledge this seems like a problem that isn't only a one off if I'm not the only one reporting it.
Is there anything I can possibly do to fix my phone or something to avoid doing so others don't run into the same unfortunate set of circumstances?
PS. two days ago I deleted a few folders on my USB storage as they were taking up too much storage space. I doubt they had anything to do with the problem though and that's the only difference I can think of that MAY have trigged the event. But I have no reason as to why it happened. I am also using NoMoarPowah and Chainfires3D mod (which I've been using for ages and i'm sure had nothing at all to do with the problem)
hopefully someone knows of a definite solution. :\
Wow the same thing is happening to my phone as well. Thanks for the detailed description. Hopefully we'll find a response soon. Also, I would suggest you investigate the volume of chode in the nearby vicinity of your phone, may be a problem (personal experience)
I just dropped mine off a stepladder in kfc, and i'm experiencing the same problem. Avoid doing this. Hopefully someone else has a better solution to your problem but for now, just don't drop it off any stepladders.

Through implementing my CAS 89 values and inserting chode = 2x length into my TVM solver i introduced the viagra into my phonem therefore, bringing its pwoer to 9001 and causing for it to groan in pleasure. Through utilising square volume = 2 * x * l with x = your vaginas length and y = The radius of your arsehole i solved this problem. (Personal experience, for more information visit (it made me delete the link))
P.s chodemaster - Your personal experience is obviously limited and incredibly detrimental to the phone. When YOU have caught all 151 original chodes you should post in this forum in a SERIOUS and well rounded individual manner

Sigh I really need a solution. Not thread spam >.<
This sounds like a serious issue with your phone's hardware. You should return it to Samsung.
with the phones hardware itself?
If they manage to fix it do you think the'll notice it's been rooted?
I've removed the triangle and reset the flash count i've just got a new ROM on it.
(as in will it still be under warranty)
If you manage to reset the counter and get the original stock rom on it (or a new version which was meant for your device and came by kies) you should be perfectly fine, just don't root it again (until you get it back, that is).

In that case chances are very high that Samsung will simply replace it, given that they probably won't be able to turn it on, too.
That's what I've heard from many people atleast, who had issues turning their devices on.
Only way to find out: see if you can get warranty.
Other option: be honest that you rooted and hope for the best, yet I don't know how Samsung staff would react to that, probably not too good.
Ps:
I take it that you have a JIG and tried that one already? As you stated, that you did reset the counter.

I've given it to a friend but I highly doubt it would work. Anyway for now, I'm going to place it in rice JUST IN CASE there is a tiny bit of moisture on some part of the motherboard which is messing things up. If that dosn't work i'm going to go down to my mobile dealer and hope for the best
thanks for your help!
One question: Did you pull the battery, and put it back in?
I have had this sometimes before, it seems to be caused of overheating... But I'm not 100%. I have checked Logcat but nothing in there of interest.

[Q] Is my Amaze bricked ??

Ok guys, yes...I'm a noob...
I did a master reset on the phone and now I get nothing...
It won't turn on unless I plug it in to the charger.
When it does turn on, all I get is a few vibrations, and
the icons at the bottom light up.
I can get windows to see the two "drives" of the phone,
but they are empty (have 0 bytes if you right click and check properties. If you left click, it says please insert disc).
I've tried a new battery and my battery turns another phone on...
I've also tried two cables and two PCs.
It hasn't been rooted or messed with, the battery died and I went to charge
it and nothing...I left it on charge overnight and at least see a bit life.
Any ideas, or should I just send it on to HTC??
So that others have a better idea... can you get into hboot or fastboot?
try a nwe battery

he said he already tried a new charged battery, so it can't be that. I'm thinking his phone's OS might be gone so he should probably installed a RUU or something.
In the dark...
Can't see anything come up on screen...
no idea what mode it's in, hboot, fastboot or anything ??!?!!
Think it might be possible to install just a stock (Tmobile) RUU?? If so, how ?????

There isn't a way if your phone isn't detected or you can't get into hboot. Meaning you have no control over your phone to do anything.
Anyways, for htc warranty exchanges that is done with tmobile... they usually send you the phone first and then you send one back in return. Unless your policy is different. So i suggest you calling them immediately.
Update
I can go into control panel and "see" the phone listed in device manager under portable devices as "F" and "G". Click properties and they are found as HTC devices. Does this mean I can do anything to it? I just want my phone back working as fast as I can. Sending it in will take a while. I bought this phone for the camera. We have a 1 yr old and don't wanna miss the Christmas pics...

are you on tmobile? they usually send within 2 days, their distribution center is in texas or something. I usually get it next day.
You said your screen doesn't turn on or doesn't show anything. It's gonna be hard to determine what you're doing even if you can run ADB to put it in oem fastboot and to flash a RUU that way. But it sounds like your display might be a problem too then. It'll be quicker to do an exchange. If you call in today, they'll probably ship it on monday and you'll get it wednesday latest. unless you have tmobile insurance plan. it should be next day and you'll get it tuesday.
Thanks
Well that might work for me then...can't hurt to give it a try.
Thanks a bunch for letting me know !!!
No problem, I had my fair share dealing with tmobile exchanges lol.
If you purchased directly from tmobile it should be very easy to do an exchange because your warranty is verified.
If you bought it off craigslist/ebay. sometimes the previous users used a different carriers that makes the warranty no longer verified. HOWEVER many customer reps will still try to process the exchange (you can determine by their upbeat personalities lol).
If you run into someone who won't do it, just call again and talk to another rep. Most of the time they will push it through because it's still a newly released phone.
Have you already contacted T-Mobile support? You'll have to talk to them anyway before they agree to replace your phone.
The reason I am asking this is because there might be an unpublished backdoor way to restore your device if your device is not completely (hardware-wise) dead. For example, Dell Streak has a complete firmware image on its internal SD card and you needed to somehow trigger an IPL routine to restore the device to its original condition.
I haven't heard of anything similar on HTC devices yet, but hey, it's just a thought. And if there actually is a way, and you are the first one to post it here, you'll be a hero!

yeah we normally just flash a RUU, but you can't even see the screen, so we can't even be certain that we're in the correct modes to be flashing and stuff. because we require to ADB it to restart in fastboot, but we can't even see if its going to fastboot. or if it already is in fastboot to begin with, so we're not certain which commands to run with the screen being off. Well you can always try commands and it should only work in certain modes, but do you really want to do it blindly? I would rather just exchange the thing.
Not afraid to try....
Well, I can't use it as it is...exchange is a hassle even in 2-3 days. Can't do anything until tomorrow anyway. I was thinking today, I've heard they can port Android to iPhone...there's no fastboot there, is there ??? Soooooo, if it's turning on, I should be able to do something...I want my phone back !!!
Edit: I misunderstood the issue

[Q] Completely dead GSII - data extraction

I've tried to search for this, but nothing has come up, so grateful if you don't flame me.
I've dropped my Galaxy SII down the loo. I know. I'm an idiot. But an honest one. It did the whole flashy screen thing before I could rip the battery out, so I think it is well and truly dead. A night in a hot room in a rice bath didn't fix it, and I doubt the day in the airing cupboard in the rice bath will do either. I am insured, so that's fine.
Problem is, I want to be able to extract the data from it that was on there. Any thoughts as to how I can do that? It really doesn't turn on at all, not even to get into a boot loop.
Thanks.
I doubt you'll be able to extract the data without being able to access the internal storage. And if the phone doesn't turn on, you'd need 'specialist' tools to do that I.E the kind Samsung/repairers use to fix borked phones. Even they may not be able to recover the data.

Any idea where I might be able to get that done? I work in London Bridge, and live in Alton, Hampshire. Or how I might be able to find someone who does that sort of thing?
Or, better still, is there a programme that I can use to do it? Some of the stuff in the phone is quite 'personal', and I doubt my wife would be chuffed if anyone else were to have access to that. Thanks.
Andy
unless you can boot into recovery you cant get the data out
because you cant read the data from the chip without booting
There's no way you're going to be able to do it yourself. Start contacting mobile phone repairers, you'll might even find places who do data extraction on PC's drives who can do it. Yellow Pages/Google/etc. But definitely no chance of you doing it unfortunately as BlueFa1con said.
Re: the stuff that's 'personal, if it's that personal, I'd recommend you destroy the phone.

Just got a quote of £60 to get the data off. No way is it worth that much.
Think it may have unbricked itself. It turns on now, the touchscreen is a bit flaky - it is a bit slow to recognise touch, but I reackon it will go into data mode so I can get what I need before it goes for repair (if needed).
