[Q] Are you affected by the android os battery drain bug?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As far as I know, this bug is related to gingerbread and not by samsung, somehow it is triggered randomly (some say google maps, others say wifi or games) and the root cause is unknown, that's why some people haven't experience it, a quick temp solution is to restart the device but this is just terrible solution..if you are affected pls help spread the word so the issue becomes a high priority in google, the issue is already raised here since Feb 2011 and a lot of people have already experienced it (I myself experienced it):
http: / / code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15057
but it is still under medium priority, unbelievable! do you remember the SMS bug? google got pressured when it was spread in forums and news site..I think we can do the same here..let's raid android forums and android news site
here's the thread detailing the bug:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696

it happened to me once...as you said before i restarted the phone and everythnig was normal again..
battery drain was due to wi fi sharing(although it was turned off)..and
dialer(dont know why...nearly 20% battery drain...) mainly...

I reverted back to KE2, factory reset, rooted, froze the bloat and getting phenomenal battery life.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

No never only time i get battery drain is the usual after flashing a rom .
jje

I'm on build KE3 and in 4 days I have experienced no battery drain. Every time I check battery usage; it's usually 50% display drain.

Hi mate,
I used madmack's ROM which is based KE7 to enable Arabic.
What does factory reset means? will I loose all this setup? also how do you do the reset?
What would be my options if I want to keep madmack's ROM?
Kind regards,
Sul

The battery on my UK Vodafone supplied SGS2 doesn't last long.
The battery usage shows the following:
1) Android OS 54%
2) Email 20% (I have an exchange account)
3) Display 12%
4) Cell standby 5%
3) The rest is divided up as Phone idle and Android System
This is after just over 11hours of it being turned on, with a 3G, no wi-fi, gps or bluetooth, and the battery is nearly drained.
Does anyone know what type of usage accounts for 'Android OS'. I have no idea why it uses so much of my battery. I don't use the phone that much, i'm not playing with apps and fiddling.
The 3G signal is for my Vodafone Sure Signal. Since it's local to my house, the transmit and receive power is very low, far less than if I were outdoors with a 3G signal.
I wondered if the various types of Sync's that are performed in the background are what's accounting for 'Android OS'.
I've turned off the live wallpaper now to see if that improves things, just in case that wallpaper keeps cycling even though the screen is off.

I'm not getting the monstrous drains some are reporting, but still a solid 21% of Android OS plus 5% of Android System (whatever the difference is there). I can't remember exactly if my Hero had the same amount, but I think it was lower than that.

Got the drain. A factory reset fixed the problem, and I'm gradually re-enabling services and accounts now.
Just enabled my second Google account now, and the results are a bit worrying. I'll post back when I know.

How can you find out the battery usage??? I can't find it anywhere on my SGS2, I want to know too

Sorry, I've found it...
Mine is (without sim card, wifi on)
Android OS : 16%
Display : 14%
Android system : 3%
Phone idle : 2 %
Cell standby 65%

Yep I get it. Maybe we could start a poll?

For anyone else experiencing this battery drain: Factory reset helped A LOT. Doesn't seem to matter much which sleep policy I have for Wifi either, and all my Google accounts are added now. Will be re-connecting some more accounts and changing some settings gradually over the next days. I'll post back if I find anything that breaks my newfound battery life.

same here. did a factory reset and the problem was gone. Will add more and more apps step by step and see if it comes back.

dont think theres a bug, its just how, samsung built the os

I had this problem on my S as well... seemed to happen randomly. Some days the phone would have stellar battery life, others it would die before the work day was over.

What's the point of doing a factory reset then loading up all the same stuff you had on it last time which will eventually lead you to the same problem?

[Q] [HELP] battery drain really fast

I know this question has been asked really lots of times, but I didn't seem to find cases similar to mine.
there doesn't seem to be any wakelock (except 2 which is incredibly short) and it was in deep sleep mode all the time. but yet, it drains almost 5% per hour which i find is really too much...
I've tried lots of firmware (litening, wamanlite, turkbey, stock, ICS) and removed all the unnecessary bloatware to reduce wakelocks to a state as shown in attachment. but still, they do not have any results, still get less than 1 day life without any usage at all...
Could this be hardware problem? I find it gets hot really fast even when i'm just facebooking.
Or is there anything else can i try to do? this device really started to disappoint me ever since the battery life looks like this.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

maybe try out BetterBatteryStats, duuno but maybe this could help?!
cheers and good luck!
Try Hydrogen-ICS latest version, it seems to be "the rom" today
Battery life is very good and its overall a stable system.
Make sure to "Fix Permission" after first start, reboot recovery and do it.
Also sometimes "to much junk" in your SD card can cause battery drain, copy your files and format the SD card, you might see some diffrence. (i did)

you got 20Hrs out of your phone? grats! as of lately i've been trying alot of different roms and different customization settings from kernel tweeks to CPU tweeks (undervolting/underclocking) and im even turning off every extra setting that consumes battery power apart from wifi
on best with a 2000Mah battery i get 13 hrs on standby and 4 hrs if im playing a game - these days my phone doesnt charge anymore - it discharges even when plugged in
I recommend downloading HydrogenICS, it's good! Download Battery drain, so you can see how fast your battery is being drained.. Also, let your battery go down to 5% then charge your phone
Something is seriously wrong - you've hardly used it, looking at those graphs.
I'd try a stock anything, and if you get similar drainage send it in for repair/buy a new battery.
this is'nt normal , in sleep mode i can get 20 hours and only lose 9%
use hydrogen and neak , and try , if you get the same result so it will be hardware fault
the 3g data it kills the batt very fast,i don think u got a hardware prblm, cause 20hrs an still to go is good ive seen ppl reporting worse...dude instal better batt stat,3g watch dog but remember batt saver apps too run in bckgrnd so i suggest u stay on a stable rom wiv a custum kernel like siyah or neak an watch the batt in better batt stat.....wen i need more juice i switch to airplane mode in nite then rebot in the morning....i don hav any tweaks or uv,oc but ive seen the batt is very good wen i don use the data or wifi or download or update,pm me if any doubt......cheeeerz
You flashed different ROMs the last days? First thing is you should only flash with full battery and after flashing it needs some time (three full battery cycles e.g.) untill the battery works fine for the ROM.
And you may recallibrate your battery. Turn the mobile off and load the battery to full. Then go to CWM and reset your batterystats. Now unload till the mobile goes of and reload to full with mobile off. If you doe this for e.g. 3 times the battery should be recalibrated.
I must say Omegas ICS + Speedmod or Siyahs Kernel. Best ever. Or checkout Paradoxxxs rom very stable but for me not so good xD

bro, 20 hours is with 99% deep sleep is seriously wrong. better battery stats cant tell me nothing, since i have no wakelocks or whatever, and all those battery savers apps, they spent more battery than they can save. when those screenshot is taken, i can tell you for sure, bluetooth, gps, 3g, wifi, auto sync etc everything was turned off. even brightness is 10% (which is even lower than auto brightness settings). anyway thanks for the reply

nope, i always try at least 5-6 battery cycles after flashing to see the real graph. and i've read in this forum somewhere, calibrating battery by deleting batterystats is useless for this phone.

speedmod is a kernel like siyah rite? i've use siyah before, but it doesn't seem like much help. nonetheless, will try them ^^
thanks for all the replies and recommendation, will try different rom & update again (probably in 4-5 days for trying 2 roms
I have exactly same problem. On GB over night(7 hours), battery consumption was around 9%. On ICS more than 20%, but nobody touch phone. I try few roms: wanamlite, omega, bezke, pure. Now i have hydrogen. Better battery stats shows nothing special. Only thing what i can think is wi-fi. if i turn off seams to be better, not that dramatic, but anyway not that good like on GB.
strange...
let me ask this... what does the yellow color in the phone signal mean? anybody got any clue?
shouldn't it be green/gray ?
in my phone whenever i have green/gray in the battery view the bar hardly goes down on idle but i see a big drain compared to green/gray when it becomes yellow even in idle
let me post a pic to clarify...
i was complaining about sudden batt drop on cm9 ics, i know its 2 diff roms but still the yellow bar got my attention in both pics...
just searched google and came up with red= no signal, yellow=very bad signal to no signal, green = good signal/full
bad signal makes the phone look for the signal in a bad way using a lot of the battery...
guess i found out why my batt suddenly dropped so bad compared to the rest of the bar...
id suggest flashing a couple of modems and testing how good of a signal u get with each and sticking with the one that works for u, if its a weak signal from the provider then find a better provider that covers ur place with better reception...
start from there and then if batt life is still bad search search and search... best of luck with ur phone...
@mazroui
in those 7 hours your phone should lost 9 - 10% of battery, but not more than 20 unused, what is process causing that usage?
for me: i charged phone before sleep, when wake up after 7h i had 20% left.
Android OS - 92% , rest for cell standby, phone idle and screen. Wi-fi was setup to sleep when screen is off. Better batery stats show that wi-fi was on for almost whole time
Cell Standby and Phone Idle using that much of your power means that the signal in your area is horrible and the phone is struggling to maintain a decent connection with the towers, this can drain a tremendous amount of battery depending on how bad the signal really is, the yellow bar means it's not optimal but there is a large degree of variation between the top end and bottom end of the yellow bar spectrum. Try a different modem or move your phone to an area with better reception and see if you still get this sort of drain.
Android OS is misreported by practically every Kernel because for some reason Samsung accidentally made Screen On add to the Android OS bar, so your Android OS usage is actually AOS + Screen On, for the most part high AOS usage can be ignored as a source of drain using the phone info battery screen, I would look elsewhere for the problem. Sometimes rogue apps hide their wake locks in another wake lock, for instance if you have facebook or many of the IM programs on your system, they poll their servers a lot causing a kernel wake lock called 'svnet dormancy' (in gb) or 'multipdp' (in ics) this causes a lock of 5s to ensure proper packet transfer, if your app is requesting packets every 4 seconds, then its essentially a permanent wake lock but may not be reported as the app being the source.

There is a defect with Android where good signal strength is mis-reported on this screen as yellow, even if you have 100% signal.
Until you go to About Phone > Status, just once. Then when you go back to this screen, it will start reporting as green if you have good signal.
I've tested this out on my phone, and confirmed it... try it out yourself.
I stopped caring about it, so I just ignore it unless it gets reported as red.

If you look at the graph in the right pic you can see that the curve is less severe when WiFi is active, while this doesn't prove my point that its a network issue it does increase my suspicion that the issue is mobile data related.

Something is horribly wrong with that. Do a full wipe. If it still does that, reflash your firmware. If it STILL does that, maybe flash to a newer stock ICS firmware? Then as a last resort, you may want to go back to GB.

This guy may be onto something, actually. First thing you should try is flashing a different modem. THEN do all the stuff I said above.
EDIT: just noticed you're in Oz. Try flashing a T modem. Most Australian users report much better results with both battery and signal after doing this.

Help please: battery woes, stock ROM, no root

I'm trying to assist a non-technically inclined friend to troubleshoot her battery life issues. She's on a stock JB Vodafone ROM, and she lives a long way away, so me just going to see her and rooting the phone is a no-no.
Her battery dropped from 99% - 47% overnight, with the main culprits being android system, followed by device idle and cell standby quite a long way behind. The phone had wifi and mobile data switched off during this period.
I know android system is an umbrella for all sorts of processes that go on in the background, but since she isn't rooted I can't use Better Battery Stats to drill down and try and find the cause of her wakelocks. She doesn't have many apps installed at all, mainly just what came with the phone.
Is there some general stuff that I can do to try and eliminate any obvious causes of this battery drain? Any suggestions at all would be welcomed

Install gsam from play and let it run over night. Use it to inspect apps, but then toggle the view from battery drain to number of times waking device. Typical culprits are sync with numerous accounts and location services. Google Now has been know to beat up location services. Next install air push detector and remove any apps it detects.
Hope this helps.

When I upgraded my phone to JB i had to charge my phone twice a day, so I decided to do a factory data reset and now my battery life is about 20 hours, I'm installing one by one all the apps that I had and until now I haven't had that problem anymore.
You could tell her to do the same, and let me know if it worked. Good luck!

I had the exact same problem, but on ICS. I figured that Fast Dormancy was the culprit, keeping my phone awake for almost half the time it was out of charger. It solved itself on Jelly Bean, but I read a tip somewhere that might help.
1. Remove battery for about a minute. Re-insert battery.
2. When phone is fully charged, ONLY remove it from charger when screen is on and phone unlocked. If not, then remove battery and start over.
Dont know if this helps, but give it a try. Worth a shot. If not, factory reset is an option. Better Battery Stats is also good for checking wich processes keep the phone awake.

[Q] Battery Draining No Matter What I Shut Off... Why?

Hello,
I wanted to get your guys opinion as I believe my phone may have turned defective and I really don't want to go down the Warranty Route as I'll loose the phone for weeks. And willing to try anything suggested.
So here's the problem:
Battery Draining at very high rates. On stock battery, I am draining about 12% an hour, after 6 or so hours my 15% battery capacity left warning turns on. I figured it was the battery, so bought a double capacity 4200mAh Hyperion Battery. Now my battery drain is at 6% an hour (which is equivalent to the factory battery considering the double capacity).
I am currently on XXELKC 4.1.2 Stock ROM. When I first noticed the problem, I was on 4.1.1. Figured I would ODIN, Wipe all cache's, and start clean. This has made no affect on battery life.
Here's what I've tried:
- 4.1.1, 4.1.2 Stock ROMs from Wipe - High Drain
- Airplane Mode with Location Services Disabled - High Drain, but 4.5% an Hour instead of 6% an Hour.
- Disabled all Samsung Apps - seemed to have little impact
- Disabling Google Now has made zero impact on battery life.
- 4.1.1 BBS revealed nothing - may need to try again on 4.1.2
Any ideas? Or is this sounding like the phone? Is it possible after a wipe the phone, when I re-enter my Google Credentials it is restoring some data which is defunct and causing high drain?
Note: Screen shots are with the double capacity battery taken right after a clean Odin upgrade to 4.1.2. Only ran Android Activation and thats it.
It looks like your phone isnt going to sleep properly. Try a custom rom/kernel.
Have you done a full whipe ?? If not, do so, and don't forget to make a back up first. It worked for me !

I had similar issues, I factory reset worked, and I also download rescan media root app to disable the media scanner which was my main battery killer.
WHen you do the factory reset make sure your phone is connected to the internet, so it will prompt google to store the apps you have and remote install when you sign back into the phone.
I have performed a full wipe but that had minor impact on battery life but I wounder if the Google Restore possibly restored an invalid setting. I will try this again without entering my credentials and see if there is a link with a restored setting. I will have to give the rescan media app a try as well.

Any specific kernel in mind. From what I've been reading no kernel seemed to stand up to magically solve battery issues without voltage drop or cutting services like Google now from the rom.

I have attached a run with BBS for 1 hour. Nothing is really standing out. The phone was in deep sleep for all but 2 minutes. I did have Google Now and Location Services Disabled as that was eating away an impressive 10 minutes / hour from deep sleep. But my battery life only increased from 6% an hour to 4.5% an hour. An improvement but weak IMO considering the larger battery.
Results from BBS is attached.
I once had that kinda issue too
What I did was Factory Reset and that did the trick for me
How about trying the app CPU sleeper?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I've had this issue before on the i9100 Galaxy S II, where it didn't seem to matter what I did, it chewed battery just as soon as I put my Google account back onto the handset. I believed it was caused by the Samsung calendar bug. So absolutely; try it without putting your Google account onto the device.
Also, your WiFi signal looks low, although this has less of a difference compared to having low mobile coverage...

your first post has a huge amount of wakeocks that arent going to be reflected with an hours run on BBS. If i were you id charge it to 100%, unplug just before going to bed and then show us the BBS log in the morning so people can see whats happening over an 7-8 hour peroid

Hello,
I wanted to get your guys opinion as I believe my phone may have turned defective and I really don't want to go down the Warranty Route as I'll loose the phone for weeks. And willing to try anything suggested.

Have you tried flashing a custom ROM?

I have attached a run with BBS for 1 hour. Nothing is really standing out. The phone was in deep sleep for all but 2 minutes. I did have Google Now and Location Services Disabled as that was eating away an impressive 10 minutes / hour from deep sleep. But my battery life only increased from 6% an hour to 4.5% an hour. An improvement but weak IMO considering the larger battery.
Results from BBS is attached.

It looks like the same problem I was having. Your WIFI is always on.

Also leaving your Bluetooth On all the time is going to drain the battery pretty quickly.

its not wifi always on, my wifi is always on too and i lose 2% over an 8 hour standby period.
Its more what apps are using the wifi connection and waking the phone up, thats what the op needs to look into
I have to say ive had pretty bad battery lately aswell. If op doesnt mind I might post my bbs log tomorrow sometime
tapp'd on my S3

More information can't hurt. Post in and Maybee there is a correlation.
OK. So I went ahead with your suggestions and did the following
Factory Wipe again from Settings Menu
Went back to factory Samsung battery for consistency in reports to other users
Took out both my sim and sdcard to eliminate those possibilities
Put into airplane mode
Disabled a bunch of apps (ss on next post)
Still bismal results but better than before. 7 percent an hour drain. Attached all the files. Ideas? Google says phone is awake but bbs doesn't seem to shed any clues for me...
And here are the disabled and installed apps
your phone isnt going to sleep at all....something is keeping it awake..try a stock rom ( any will do) with full wipe. Dont restore anything with titanium backup. Disable auto sync on everything. Set wifi sleep policy to always. See if the problem persists.

That last run posted was stock 4.1.2 XXELKC firmware and Factory Wipe from Settings Menu. I also performed Wipe and Cache Wipe in the Bootloader (Power Up + Center + Power). All I did was install bbs and never put in Google or Samsung credentials and disabled some stock apps from running.
If your not referring to factory Wipe, can you please explain further? Thanks.

[Q] Huge battery drain on use has started last week. [Kinda Solved]

Hello everyone, I'm using Motorola Atrix with Epinter CM10 4.1 ROM for last 2 months, I was very happy with battery life. Phone wasn't getting hot and with normal usage, even with 3G on (in my country only options are 2G and 3G), I could get %40 of battery end of the day. But for no reason, phone has started to get hot (only 2G on) and drains battery really quickly for last 1 week. I can't even get %5 battery left from morning to evening now. I didn't change anything, only installed Adobe Flash 11.1, then I deleted it but nothing has changed. Phone gets into deep sleep no problem with that, no background apps. I did a virus scan both on phone and from computer, both came out clean. I reinstalled rom. Nothing. I'm gonna crash my phone against wall it's really annoying. I think I'm gonna do factory wipe and reinstall rom again.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Do you leave wifi switched on at all times?
I use MIUI on my Atrix (partially based on epinter's work, I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong), but I have found that the phone suddenly starts staying awake for no apparent reason a while (often a couple of days) after I've left wifi switched on. This obviously causes bad battery drain. I can usually get the phone to sleep again by rebooting with wifi switched off (I think) and a battery pull is invariably required.
I now just switch on wifi when I have large files to download then turn it off straight afterwards.
Not sure if it is the same issue or not, but Better Battery Stats (which can be downloaded on xda) indicated the Rilj process was stopping the phone from sleeping when this problem occurred. It is worth trying this app to see if it gives any indication what is causing your battery drain.

No I switch between mobile data and wifi. Thank you for your suggestions and opinions but I really don't think my problem is about sleep. It started to get hot and drain when I actually use the phone. For example, I was checking Twitter for 10 min. with 3G and battery was dropping %1. Now it drops %5 with 2G on and gets really hot like 35-37 Celsius degree. I'm using Watchdog to oversee processes and nothing is working without my knowledge on background.
Hi,
I have the same problem on the nottachtrix roms since the last 2 weeks, I tried switching to epinter cm10 with no luck. Ordered a new battery to check if the battery is dead or if the atrix is faulty
if you find a fix, please post it here

install gsam battery monitor to see your phone's awake time. this drain happens to me also when i listen to music or take a photo. something with mediaserver keeps the phone awake and then only thing to do is kill mediaserver or a reboot.
Regardless of which other apps you are using to monitor app and process usage, I'd recommend trying Better Battery Stats as this is much more detailed and low-level than other apps I've encountered.
It's a free download for xda members:

Little update.
I turned back to factory settings, then did a full wipe, cache wipe, dalvik wipe. I was so annoyed I even did system wipe manually from advanced options in recovery. I reinstalled Epinter CM10 rom, got my apps back thanks to Titanium Backup. Installed GSAM (thanks to saldirai), downloaded SetCpu and chose Nvidia Tegra 2 T20/AP20H, underclocked to 912 mhz. Couldn't done any undervolting sadly, says something about governor.
Now I'm checking battery stats and temperature by GSAM, so far no complaints and better from yesterday BUT I haven't use my phone heavily yet. Temperature changes between 26-31 Celsius degrees, battery drops %1-2 percent on use -also it needs calibration- with only wifi use which is always on. I'll update this post if anything changes.
Update: I think I've found the problem. When I choose The Weather Channel widget to "use my location" phone immediately starts to get warm. Weird point is, this wasn't an issue before. Apart from that I'm playing New Star Soccer and Carmageddon for 3-4 hours with wi-fi full time on and battery drops to %30. I'm really happy about that. Normal battery temperature is about 25-32 during the day and different from before it quickly gets cold after I stop playing games. Just like before.

[HELP] High battery drain

Hello guys, I have a P768 L9 (JB, rooted and bootloader unlocked) about 3 months and in the last three weeks he presented a strange behavior. It all started after a day it overheated, the battery reached 0% and hung. After that I started to pay attention to battery consumption and realized I was different. Consumption was approximately 10% per hour with no use in standby and all connections closed. I made hard resets, I started testing with other roms, even tested with Pacman (yes, the camera did not work), yet consumption remained high. Configured the fastdormancy and changed nothing. After that I went back to the original rom and started testing, installed juice defender and the consumption decreased to about 6% per hour, which I still think is a lot of battery. The BBS does not indicate anything that may be the cause of it, and Battery Drain Analyzer says the culprit is IDLE and Radio. I can not understand because also tested in airplane mode.
I made some screenshots (link below) and hope someone can help me, please!

I`m not too experienced with this but I`ve had this issue before and a battery calibration helped for me. Download this app and follow the instructions. It might solve it.
well, I've used this many times too = / thanks for trying to help

I have a Galaxy SIII mini and the battery lasts two days away from the charger with the same use during the day ..
I have no idea what can be, love my L9 and I'm losing hope
people, no one is going through this? nobody knows what to do?
browsing the internet i find many android phones with this problem, but the solutions are specific to each model and never work for me
