[Q] Are the various lag fixes still necessary? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I just had a quick question on the lag fixes. I was using the OCLF for a while, and I've heard of the Voodoo fix. I recently tried to uninstall the OCLF, and it wouldnt undo the changes correctly. I ended up having to restore to a super old backup, which was a pain, but worked (I think). I'm pretty much a noob at rooting etc, I barely managed to do it with one of the various one click methods. I haven't messed with any of the modems or kernels etc, still running the stock 2.2 firmware. So my question is, are the lagfixes still helpful for vibrants running 2.2? Will installing any of them do more damage than not? I ask this because I know theres a fair amount of controversy with task killers (which I don't use). I know they are all different, but as a general thing, is it better to just not mess with it? I looked around for a thread like this in the Q&A forum, but I didn't find any. If its already here, sorry for an entirely new thread. Thanks in advance.

easiest way to do this is to go back to stock 2.1 with odin and root and then upgrade to 2.2 with kies. Oclf is old news the lag fixes are built into the roms now a days. Then flash clockwork recovery and pick a rom and ur phone will be flying with the built in lag fixes!

I actually have it back to normal right now, I was just wondering if lag fixes were useful with 2.2. So what you are saying is that its best to just flash a custom ROM with a fix in it already, rather than installing any of the standalone fixes?

The Voodoo lagfix seemed to work very well. Just be sure to read up on it before doing anything. Make sure you read about how to repair it in-case it breaks, and be sure to read about how to disable it in case you want/need to flash a rom that doesn't come with a voodoo enabled kernel. OCLF is old, and will only boost your quadrant numbers.

Will do. Thanks much!

[Q] Couple quick questions

I am a fairly new Vibrant owner. Had the G1 before and I am so happy I got rid of that. Anyway, I decided to root the phone and install some things since I did the same on my G1. I have:
Frankin-Twiz Update 3 Rom with his LagFix
JAC's XMOD OC/UV Kernal
All is well and the phone is super fast but I want to revert back to stock. I kind of fell in love with the modifications that TouchWiz brought and Frankin-Twiz gets rid of most of them in favor of stock.
So my questions: I found the thread that has the stock firmware and I see that I can install it using Nandroid. Easy but do I have to remove Eugene's LagFix first? Is there anything else I should do before flashing it? I just don't want to mess up anything.
My Vibrant is one that cannot use the VooDoo Beta4 so I have to wait til Beta5. Is there anything that I can use in the meantime? I was using the OCLF before but I read that EXT2 isn't very safe to use and could mess up your phone.
Thanks for any help.

[Q] Axura 2.1 questions

Hi all, I have a few questions about Axura that would help me out a ton if answered.
First thing, I finally just took the plunge to flashing a new ROM for the very first time since I've had an Android phone and am pretty excited to have done it correctly.
I'm currently using Axura 2.1 on my Samsung Vibrant. I love the extra features that come with it as well as just having Froyo finally.
I do have a few concerns though that I'm not sure of:
1) Axura seems a bit laggy. Before this I was simply running Eclair with OCLF and it was *much* faster than this. My question is this: Before flashing Axura I removed the lag fix from my phone because I've seen most people say that you should remove any Voodoo type lag fix before flashing a ROM. Is it possible to re-install the OCLF on top of Axura, or should I stay away from it?
2) When I noticed how laggy it was I opened my task manager and was horrified to see that the amount of RAM I have on my phone is now 304 MB. It is my understanding that these phones come with 512MB of RAM. Did Axura suddenly just remove around 200MB's of RAM on my phone? Is this normal for ROMs, or for Axura itself? Does this really mean my phone has less RAM than it did when running Eclair?
3) Before flashing I made sure to make backups of everything. I have 2 separate Nandroid backups of everything prior to flashing Axura, and I also have a full Titanium backup of all my apps so I can restore them after flashing anything quickly. My question is, if I were to want to go back to Eclair again and simply have my phone run like it was prior to flashing Axura, will all I need to do be simply go to Clockwork Mod, click on "Mangage and Restore Backups", choose my Nandroid backup, and then reboot?
Will I have to do anything else or should a simple reboot to my Nandroid be enough? The reason I ask is because I'm not sure if flashing a ROM that runs Android 2.2 and then wanting to go back to 2.1 will make things more difficult or introduce any more steps.
Any help on what I need to do to go back to 2.1 prior to flashing Axura would be great.
Thank you very much if you can help.

Just one more thing. JL1 might work, might not work. I went back to JK6 just because I got better GPS signal. This might be different for your device and area though
Overall, Axura 2.1 is plain great. Just my personal thing... but keep your phone idle for about 1 hour after the first boot. Don't change themes, fonts or applications.

Uh oh. I definitely did not keep it idle at all. As soon as it was running I loaded up my Titanium backup and and went to work restoring everything.
Would that cause any kind of permanent performance issues?
Also, can anyone explain to me this whole RAM thing?

[Q] going back to stock?

I want to go back to stock since I read on here its recommended when flashing a new ROM onto the vibrant.
My question is, people talk about using ODIN, or using clockworkrecovery, which one is better?
What is the difference? I basically want to wipe everything and start over, like the Android equivalent of reinstalling Windows
I also read that disabling any lag fixes is necessary. Since I flashed one modded ROM on top of another (I didn't know at the time), I never actually disabled the lagfix, just flashed one over the other. I used OCLF, which now tells me that there is no lagfix installed, and won't even let me install one. So can I go ahead and revert to stock? Or is there something I else I would need to do?
Thanks for any help in advance, still learning.

Honestly...rooting and flashing seems like

...a pain in the ass for the Fascinate. The gf has one of these phones, and after seeing what I've done with my G2, she wants me to root and flash a nice rom.
Problem 1 (not so small): we both use macs at home.
Problem 2 (huge): after reading through the development forum - it doesn't look that easy to root, nor flash a decent rom on the Fascinate!
not only do some roms require you to have a specific kernel flashed to use them. Some roms require that you don't use the latest CWM. Also, none of roms seem to be using Gingerbread AOSP completely. They seem to be pieced together with Froyo.
Believe you me, I am not a dev in the slightest. Therefore, I am looking for a safe way to root and flash a decent rom to her phone. If there isn't, then I'll just let her run stock.
Is this easier than I'm seeing it?

Honestly, it is not that difficult. Just takes some getting used to. Obviously you have done a bit of reading, I know it seems daunting, but I promise, once you have it down it is nothing. The kernels...Most ROMS are kernel switchable, within reason. MOST of our ROMS require the RED CWM, which honestly is not a big deal, the orange is just too glitchy. And as far as the ROM's being pieced together with Froyo...Well, I am no dev either, but yes, I believe most of the ROMS are a Frankenstein of sorts, but we don't even have a Froyo source to work with yet. So the dev's, in my opinion, have done an AMAZING job. In terms of flashing on a Mac, I am not sure if Odin works on a Mac, Heimdall does though I believe. Rooting is extremely simple, it is only the flashing the right CWM, modem, etc. that may confuse you. Honestly, if you just keep reading the right things, you'll see it is pretty simple. I recommend Adrynalyne's Super Clean 2.9, and Big Loof's Steel Blue theme, with the EB16 kernel (Also Adrynalyne's).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948722
This thread has a good walkthrough, I'd follow it through Post #5... using Superclean. It's an incredibly performing full Froyo rom. Remember that Froyo is not officially out on this phone, she's running Eclair right now. Gingerbread is a ways off (though punk kaos is making great progress).
Before EB01, rooting for me was just clicking a single button.
I never had to root again since flashing EB01. For flashing itself, its just download, reboot to recovery, and flash. Not sure how its a pain in the as as it doesnt even take a minute or so.
I did end up installing 3.XX CWM from ROM manager, but I only reboot into orange CWM if i reboot using ROM manager. If I dont, I end up rebooting to red CWM.
Thanks for the responses. Put a few things in perspective. I totally forgot that she is still running Eclair and Froyo isn't officially out for these phones. My mistake, and now that makes complete sense to me why most of the roms are froyo based or patched. Another thing that made me hesitant is that Odin doesn't run on mac, and I would have anything to save the phone (unless I use one of the pcs at work) if something goes awry. I will read up on Heimdall and see if I can use that.
My apologies if I sounded bothered or uptight about the situation, thanks for the well-mannered responses to my mini-rant. Of to read up a bit more, starting with the link postd and Heimdall.
Found a quick guide for rooting the Fascinate with a Mac. Now my issue is...switching to EB01 without Odin because SuperClean needs it, correct?

[Q] So.. New to rooting and want to go with Nameless V4(when it releases soon)...

What is the best Kernel to use for this package, I was thinking TW Kernel 0327-2, which seems to be a fav of everyone in the thread. What are your thoughts on this and who is willing to walk me through my first root, to get this up and running? I am willing to Paypal some cash to anyone who successfully gets me up and running with my new phone(with a successful root). My Fascinate will be here in a few hours, new, so it will be fresh for a root. I'd rather not risk bricking it on its first day in existence.
Thanks in advance.
If you're going to be rooting I would first read up a little bit more on the whole subject of rooting and flashing. To make sure you're really committed to this.
I would start here and read this over a few times.

This is an EB01 Walk through (which still applies to EC10 and so forth)
One thing I have learned is that it is nearly impossible to brick your phone. You will soft brick it, many many many time because we are all curious and skip steps because we are excited.
The only thing to really remember is to NOT FLASH CWR (clock work recovery) 3.x.x. There are to many issues and incompatibilities at the moment with it. Unless the dev of your ROM says explicitly to use the new CWR, do not install or use it.
Go be brave and try it for yourself first, we are all here to help you get it back
Thanks, man. Will try. What Kernel are you using? Nameless V4 doesnt have one built in.
jt's 0408 (-25 undervolt) isn't a bad place to start. I'm on imnuts -50, which most phones should be able to handle (but not all).
