I recently got Samsung GS2 to use on ATT in the US. Overall the phone works very well, however I keep getting "no service" at seemingly random times in known good cell reception sites (like my house). The phone appears to be working fine with 3-4 bars and then all of sudden the signal drops and I loose all connectivity for anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes (wifi appears unaffected).
Here's what I've tried so far:
-Running stock KE7
-Downgrading my baseband to NEKD5
-Selecting "GSM only" in my network settings
-Disabling fast dormancy
-Running Lite'ning ROM just for kicks
None of these make the problem go away.
Please lmk if there's anything else I should try. Thanks in advance!
I am having the same issue on Vodaphone in the uk. Seems the only way i can avoid it is to hold the phone with finger tips top and bottom and not grip around the back! This also seems to improve wifi signal.

My problem doesn't seem to be related to how I hold the phone. I've tried holding it several different way, plus just keeping it laying flat on a table and it doesn't seem to make a difference...
I have a similar issue:
whenever I loose my 3G connection and there is no roaming GSM available the display show a "stop icon" in the upper display. That's ok... The problem is that when I put it where I know for sure there's the signal it won't reconnect but seems to stay disconnected (no service) forever! I have to force a Airplain Mode ON/OFF to make it search and catch again the signal in a few seconds. Never rooted the phone, official KG5.
My settings: WCDMA + GSM, packet data on (when in 3G, no roaming data allowed). H3G Italy.
I know at least 3 people who reported the same problem in Italy with different carriers.
Whenever it looses WCDMA + GSM, it hardly reconnects to the newtork leaving the phone in "No service", totally offline from calls too....
Finally fixed starting from fw KI4+!!

I am on a rooted i777 and have been having signal issues pretty much for the two months I've had this phone. I've done some searching to see what the problem may be but have not come across much.
What happens is that when I have a strong cell signal I am able to send messages and make calls but about 60% of the time when I try to load a web page, update an app's content, or open the market (access the internet in general) I am unable to and left with an "unable to connect" message. During these times only the outgoing arrow of the two beneath the H+ is active. In such situations I switch to wifi but I would rather not have to, especially with an unlimited data plan. So my question is why is this happening and what can I do to fix it. I've nearly thrown the POS over this. It is very odd to say the least. It should be noted that I replaced my AT&T sim card a few weeks ago to no avail. Thank you
I've had similar issues. At various times throughout the day, my phone will be completely without signal or with signal but unable to get any data. I also changed the SIM card to no avail. I don't believe it's the phone but either AT&T or the settings.
Is it possible your reception is dropping off at these times? Does your phone switch to EDGE or GPRS?
Try changing your APN with one of the apps in the market. That tripled my speeds and once I get a new APN to stick, I suspect it will fix the loss of a data connection.
If that doesn't work, return it to bone stock and do a warranty exchange.

I had no data connection tonight and almost nothing worked. In the end, I turned Airplane Mode on and off. That returned my data connection.
I think once it loses signal, it only checks every x minutes. Mine would go a while with no signal, but pick it up immediately if I toggled airplane mode, as you found.
I have had my Xperia P for about a week, and I've noticed on multiple occasions that the signal notification fluctuates quite often. It goes from 0 bars to 4 or 5 and back to zero quite a bit.
Also it tends to not receive data via mobile connection unless you go into airplane mode and go back to mobile data.
This is not a "death grip" issue because it will do this on the table even.
Any thoughts?
it gets kind of annoying.
I'm probably stating the obvious, but have you tried a reboot / other phones?
My Xperia also shows some fluctuation in the signal strength, but no different than for instance my old HTC Hero. However, I never have to go into airplane mode or anything to receive data.
Hey,
Im having kind of the same problem with my Xperia S. When I set the data trafic on, the "3g" sign on the very top of the screen pops up, but dissapears after just 1 second and I dont get any internet connection. The phone has done this before, but then the connection comes back after 10 seconds or so, but now its been gone for 2 days. I know I have full coverage where I am, so its not that.
I've tried and turn the phone off and on again but it didn't help. I have also tried turning data off and on again but nothing seems to help. Is anyone having the same issue as me?
Please help!!
Also going via airplane mode
Hi!
Having exactly the same issues as brdl04. Going via airplane mode is needed like twice a week.
Using Xperia P with firmware 6.0.B.1.564, Swedish operator Telenor.
Wondering if this is limited to specific apps/situations, as I mostly (and nearly always) need to activate/deactivate airplane mode when I need Spotify in online mode. Other apps seem to work fine, sometimes.
I hope Sony will release minor updates too. Seems like they are fully focussing on ICS. Looking forward to it.

Hello, folks!
I have a rooted I9100 (Android 4.0.3 stock from Vivo, baseband I9100VILP3, kernel 3.0.15-I9100VJLP7-CL371396 [email protected] #3, compilation IML74K.VJLP7, CSC I9100UVILP3).
Sometimes I have problems turning on WiFi, it keeps always turning on and neither become active nor allow me to turn it off again. I then need to reboot phone to fix it (when it reboots, WiFi comes turned on and gets on normally).
Another problem I have with it is that sometimes (average of 4 - 5 times a day) phone loses registration with carrier. It completely loses* signal and shows a "prohibited" icon where signal strength is shown at status bar. (Edit) Sometimes it comes back again in a few seconds and sometimes it stays at that state, making me have to reboot it to fix the problem (turning on and off airplane mode doesn't work; in fact, with registration lost and trying to use airplane mode, it doesn't turn off and only fixes with reboot).
*Actually, it doesn't lose signal (can be seen in "settings - about phone - state" screen uploaded), but only unregisters from carrier.
(Edit: screen/phone language is Brazilian Portuguese)
I've downloaded another modem driver but never had time to test it.
I don't know if both problems can have the same cause, but both of them are very annoying (especially signal loss) and I'd like to make some tries to fix them, so if anyone knows what can I do (even data collection to investigate them), your help is very appreciated.
Thanks
Additional test (ServiceMode)
When I was in the forum to post this thread, I've noticed this other thread and I've decided to use ServiceMode code (*#0011#) to investigate further at the next time my cell lose signal. Unfortunately, it showed absolutely nothing. Literally nothing (just "ServiceMode" caption and no text on the screen below).
I just spent the time to post this because I know that, even if it has shown no information (on screen), maybe it still can be a clue for the cause of the problem.
Thanks
Pls help!
Does anyone have some light to shed on this case?
Please, I do really need to fix it, at least the signal loss problem.
Thanks.
Same Issue in the US on Tmobile
Mine started doing this just a day or two ago. Exact same issue. I can kind of operate on the EDGE network but 4G fails, only WiFi seems to work. T-mobile doesn't seem to have a fix for it.
Changed to MIUI
I've just changed to MIUI (reflashed modem also – now it is ZSLPE instead of previous VILP3).
I still have issues with carrier register loss, but until now it always reconnected after a few seconds. Maybe it is a carrier issue and not a phone one.
I don't turn on WiFi a lot, but all times I've tested it, it worked well.
Another thing I've noticed with this change is that battery temperature while charging used to reach 48°C (118°F) or even 50°C (122°F) while battery level was low (less than 50%), but now it stayed around 35°C (95°F), which is completely acceptable.
I have a bizarre problem that just started happening, I can't connect to mobile network after using a wifi connection for some time. No matter what I do, the S6 edge won't connect.
I've tried switching mobile connection on and off, restarting the phone, turning the phone off and back on, switching sim cards with another phone (the other phone immediately gets connection), switching airplane mode on/off. I've gone to Samsung and my mobile provider and they have both blamed each other (of course, right?). The most frustrating part is that this happens about 50-75% of the time with my home and office wifi, and almost never with anyone else's wifi (for example trying it in the Samsung store). It will sometimes get a connection 10-15 minutes later, sometimes it takes several hours.
Samsung service has offered to take the phone in to 'review and test' but they need to do a full wipe and it will most likely take several days of testing. Knowing that the problem is almost impossible to replicate outside of my home and office, and the issue goes away by the time a service tech will ever see the phone, and the struggle to back up and restore my apps without root, I'm not sure what to do right now. Temporarily I have turned off wifi and just use mobile connection, but I'll hit my monthly data cap really soon.
This started happening 2 weeks after AOE4, just upgraded to AOE8 and it still happens. My phone is SM-G9250 with Taiwan ROM.
Screenshots attached to show I have good signal strength but not data connection, and the SIM in another phone having a connection (Zenfone 5 with lollipop).

Did you try wiping the cache?
I thought the cache is wiped whenever you do OTA update?
I'll do it manually again right now and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip.

I have the same issue! Very annoying, and miss phone calls all the time or am unable to make them because of this...
Will try the cache wipe
Wiped the system cache from Boot, problem still there.
I also wiped the cache for all apps.
I also tried the phone in safe mode and has the same problem.

So the only work around I can find is to go into settings:
1.) 'Mobile Networks'
2.) 'Network mode'
3.) Switch to 3g/2g (I don't have 4G right now, have to pay extra for it)
4.) go to 'Network operators'
5.) 'Search Networks'
6.) choose my network provider
Now the phone works just like it always did, smoothly switch between wifi and 3G and H/H+
I'm not sure what changed as I have never had 4G since it costs me extra.
Bizarre issue on SCH-I545 CM11 jflte nightly from April'15 and then on several CM12.1 jfltevzw nightlies from April thru mid-June'15: The GPS receiver works fine here in Phoenix, and in Portland, NorCal, etc. When I travel to Korea or Germany, or Costa Rica (GSM, not CDMA locations coincidentally), then the GPS seems like is it completely disabled / non-functional. GPS Status flashes up the active/searching icon in the notification bar for about 1 second, then it goes away. The GPS Status display shows zero satellites forever (tried for 10min). Not even one satellite showing on the signal strength bar or radar map. Zippo.
Tried deleting, resetting and downloading A-GPS data (via a wifi connection, not mobile data) does help. Note that I have mobile data roaming off, but cell service on and I can make/get calls and texts. Arrive back in the States and the GPS works again. Can't debug something that ain't broke! Damn it!
I'm not finding this issue in any forums. Is this a known issue? I'm on the MDK Baseband version. Will changing the modem package potentially fix this? (is it possible to change the modem SW without changing the bootloader from MDK?)
I read somewhere that the GPS radio may be on the same chip as the CDMA radio, and as soon as the phone figures out that CDMA is not available it disables this (portion of) the radio chip thus the GPS is disabled. To test this theory, here's my plan… Traveling from Phoenix to Munich tomorrow. When I land before taking the phone out of airplane mode I'll fire up GPSStatus and see if it is seeing satellites (and see how long it takes to lock). If so, then take it out of airplane mode and see if the GPS reception gets killed.
Other thoughts?

Clues
So here's the deal... I flew to Munich and sat in the airport courtyard for an hour dinking with my phone. First, before turning off airplane mode I tried to get a GPS lock. I let is sit for several minutes with no satellites found. I turned airplane mode off and the phone got on the local GSM network and I got the usual welcome message with usage rates. Data roaming was kept off. After a while of poking at various menus with no luck, I switch airplane mode back on and wallah! GPS reception. As soon as I turned on the voice/text cellular radio then no GPS reception. Very repeatable.
However, some menu that I had poked at made the phone not get back on Verizon when I came back home... "No service" in the notification bar. LTE data with strong signal worked find, but no voice/text service. Popped the SIM out and back in with reboots, and no luck. The only fix was to go back to recent CM 12.1 nandroid backup and everything is now fine.
I recall that previous to the nandroid reload that the Mobile network settings > Preferred network type > did not have the Global option once returning to the states. Global now shows in the menu on the 6/23 nightly.
Thoughts?
