Is the thunderbolt getting Sense 3.0 or should I root my phone and put on these roms that has sense 3.0?
I just got my thunderbolt today and saw lots of great roms out there on Sense 3.0. what do you think?
i bet eventually... there isnt really any stable gingerbread roms at all right now. probably a few months out for sure.
If you are going to wait for Verizon, it may be a while buddy...

Thanks guys, so its better to root my thunderbolt and load one of those roms? If so, please this is my first brand new, fresh out the box ever phone. How would I do this right? my last phones were hand me downs.

Here's the thread I followed...
[ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011
It worked great. But you have to have the android sdk and all that good stuff.
Before you flash any gingerbread rom, you should know that the leaked radio may be causing phones to brick. Be sure to read this thread and understand the risk.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096104
I really doubt that the thunderbolt will EVER get Android 3.0 officially. Gingerbread is 2.3 (currently we're running Froyo or 2.2), and that is what *should* be coming out to t-bolt owners this summer....supposedly.
Edit: I get it now. Nevermind. Don't listen to me.
Rooting is DEFINITELY the way to go, in my opinion. I couldn't live without it. I'm running BAMF Remix 1.7, and freaking love it!
Read through the rooting thread that thepolishguy posted the link to. That's the safest way to root, as long as you follow all of the steps exactly (ie read through the thread a couple times, make sure you understand it, THEN start). The easiest way to get the Android SDK installed and setup is through this thread. If you have any questions (after reading through these threads and googling any easy questions), the guys in this chat irc are EXTREMELY helpful.

Yeah. Can't stress this enough. I would recommend NOT flashing a GB rom until there are some more thoroughly tested builds of it.

Heh, I'm dumb. Wondered why anybody would expect a phone to get Android 3.0. Apparently, I'm running a little slow this morning.
*faceplam*
HTC has already stated that they will probably not support a full Sense 3.0 on the THunderbolt. However they have stated that they will take pieces from that and incorporate into updates. The issue is with Sense 3.0 they are tying to corner the 3-D look and with a single core it makes it a little tougher. Sure the TB runs fine with sense 3.0 things. I am running gingerbread right now with all the sense 3.0 add ons, but for HTC to go public and give to all users it mayt not work as well. So look for pieces from 3.0 but I doubt the whole sense 3.0 will be coming. I am betting we stay on sense 2.1 when the gingerbread finally goes public and they just use things like the updated weather in future builds.
So basically it will be a Sense 2.5? Or 2.1.5? Just tossing out ideas here
-Kiyo
From what i have read, HTC wont be doing Sense 3.0 for any phones that are already out.
all this sounds confusing. rooting this phone sounds hard and almost scary to a point of hit or miss. the sdk is so hard to install. I load it then there's a missing java jre, I'm using Avabox for signing my apk's and its running just fine with the jre 6. I had issues with both loaded.
I know there's got to be another way, revolked or something like that should be releasing something soon.

Honestly, just setting up adb correctly is probably the most difficult task in the root process and imho its not even that bad. The rest is just copy and paste and following simple directions. Jcase did an excellent job on the root guide so just follow his directions to a tee and you will be straight. I would not expect to see unrevoked anytime soon and would recommend you use the manual root method since you will learn the most from that.

First off unrevoked will not be making a one click root for the TB. It is just not possible at the stage that we are at. Flashing an old RUU can't be done without human interaction.
Second, please don't tell me you know how to sign APK's but using adb scares you? The rooting process is just copy and paste. Hell, I am sure I could have my girlfriend do it and she ain't the best with computers let me tell you.
Either use the current 3 click root process, grow a pair and do it the manual way, or deal with stock and let you'r phone just never live up to its full potential.
P.S Just on a little side note. I have yet to hear off a TB get bricked by anyone using the manual root process, and if anything goes wrong JCase will be around to help basically anytime of the day.
This confirms what others have said. No Sense 3.0, but the T-bolt will get select portions. I can't post links yet, so try to crack the code:

JQ,
I think I understand your concern. It is not with following the manual rooting steps, but rather installing adb on your computer so you can execute the steps, correct?
First a little clarity. The package you would install on your computer is the Android SDK. The Android Debug Bridge (adb) is a platform tool component within SDK.
SDK is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here is a link to Google's installing the SDK page:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
You do not need to install eclipse or a bunch of other platforms if all you are going to really use is adb for the rooting process.
You will need to install the Platform Tools component addon, but that can be done within the SDK program. (it worked that way for me)
Here is Google's ADB page:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
ADB is run in the terminal window on your computer ( command window if you use Windows). Depending on setup, you may need to navigate to the folder that adb is in to launch it. Assuming you installed sdk straight to c: in Windows, the path would be c:\android\sdk\platform_tools\
If you Google " how to install the Android SDK" or " how to install adb" you will find tons of helpful guides.
Once you have adb working head over to the link posted previously in this thread to root your TB. jcase's steps are well written and easy to follow. Btw: check those md5s on your downloads before you start flashing.
Hope this helps get you started. If so, please click the thanks button.

Yeah, use the same method. After your rooted, flash the rooted OTA stock Rom (google it) and also flash the its radio. That's what I did.

So.... I can use this (http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...unroot-windows-updated-5-20-w-mr1-update.html) like I did before then just flash the new radio that was released on 7/8 ?
Well now after 7/8, you have to flash while standing on your head. Yeah, its crazy like that.

That is too funny.
I am unable to install the 7/8 Combo Radio package after installing DasBAMF Stripped 1.8.6
Constantly says "Installation Aborted."
Anyone else with this experience? I thought that I had read that this combo worked.
Got this sorted. I was using an MR1 package, not MR2, apparently. Using a different packaging of the OTA update flashed in via HBOOT.

Your flashing it through the bootloader right? You can't use clockwork to flash it.

OK .. I have this HTC Thunderbolt .. I want to root it .. I have read the forums up and down ... I saw the link above to AndroidCentral that shows how to root it, and one over in the Thunderbolt Development forum that says MR1 Perma Root ...
I would like to know the best route for me to go with minimal risk of bricking. I have flashed my wife's LG Ally a couple of times .. was easy enough, just ran an exe
All of the ones I have found for the thunderbolt seem to be a lot more complex. Is there a OneClick method I can run that will include the new radio (so i can get the latest fixes)?
If not, I am willing to go the ADB route (I have the Android SDK installed) but I dont know how to update the radio.
Thanks, and sorry to ask a question that seems to have already been answered, I am only asking b/c I did not understand your answers above ..
Use adb to root. Radio is done through hboot. Power off phone. Then hold vol key down and power on. Will bring you to hboot. Make sure radio is at root of SD card and is named properly. There is a sticky in the DEV section that will walk you through it.
courtesy of my rooted bolt
I just used the XDA development one. The key point is to read it carefully several times and be sure you understand each step. Ask questions beforehand if you are not sure about something. And be sure to follow each step exactly. Typos are the biggest risk, so go slow and read what you've typed on each line before hitting enter.
The radio file needs to be renamed to PG051IMG.zip and placed on the root of the SD card. Then power off and boot into bootloader. It'll load automatically after you hit +volume to confirm "yes ".
I had several flashes that resulted in the Exclamation Point warning triangle. Pulling the battery and USB cable and reinstalling power got me back to a running build.
It took me a while to do every step. I wanted to skip steps, not realizing that you needed the downgrade and RUU flashes to get S-OFF and unlock.
Once that was all done, I went to DasBAMF Stripped and found the OTA radio in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160346.
So far, so good. Calibrating battery now and trying to personalize and optimize to my best ability.
Ok so from what I gather there are no issues that would prevent any of the previous methods from working post 7/8 update? That includes the one click app thats been floating around for a few months right?
I've been holding off root for months, but my patience has finally run out, time to do what I should have done from the beginning.
EDIT
on second thought, I think I'll just do it the good old fashioned way
I did the 7/8 update, and was fine with it. I just wanted to get the Verizon bloatware off. I had problems installing the stock debloated ROMs, so i ran with BAMF to test, and since it worked, I kept it. My rooting came after the recent OTA.
The once-click and .bat methods didn't work so well for me, so I followed the full instructions in a CMD window (I can't call that POS in DOS a shell).
Most of my time was installing a correct Java JDK (had to use x86 instead of x64) and getting ADB dialled in.

I had the same thinking and wanted it the quick and easy way. Doing the research and taking the time (and beers ) to do it manually was very informative and satisfying when i got done. It was said already but ive been able to apply any feature that an official OTA would give long before its normally released to verizon customers. I love my Tbolt and wouldnt have it any other way.

Doing things the long way has never really scared me, but some of the horror stories I kept hearing a month or two back about instability of GB roms had me a bit hesitant to go for it.
It does appear to be a bit more involved than what I am accustomed to, but I have used ADB before, I was just trying not to this time.
Can someone give me a bit of advice actually.
I'm on the end of Step 4 found in the Developement section, and when I hit Bootloader, it brings up a second menu not mentioned in the posts, what do i do from here?
Nevermind once again, screwed up the name of the zip file
I used the auto root method 3 times so far and worked great. I did the full last update and lost root so I had to redo it load Rom and just added the radio file in hboot.
try auto root its fast and simple just follow the commands on the screen!
I just upgraded from the DROID X and should be receiving my new device in a couple of days. I have been with the DX for about a year and a half, first smart phone and never looked back. I am running MIUI currently and have been into flashing and modding my device since day 1. Not very familiar with the HTC sense but hoping its a smooth transition. I am curious to know if there is a method or hack for tethering on the Rezound? I skimmed through some of the threads looking for possibly a step by step or any files or info regarding this but could not find anything. If anyone could point me in the right direction with a link to a thread, files, a step by step, or any info really on tethering after I root my new device, it would be greatly appreciated.

Most everything you're going to need is in the stickies here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1392
There are tons of threads on unlocking, rooting, ROM'ing, and Wifi Tether. So strap on your learning helmet because it's quite a bit different from the way you're used to working on the X. However if you have a fundamental knowledge of ADB and fastboot you should be good to go.
It's pretty straightforward.. unlock, install AmonRa / CWM.. Then root / install SuperUser.. push the google WirelessTether HTC .apk.
All done.
I came from Samsung, so the unlock process was new to me.. This guy wrote a really nice tool that combines all the steps up for unlocking / installing a bootloader and rooting if you don't want to manually do it all.

Thanks everybody for the responses, I can't wait to get my new device! Hopefully this stuff comes easy for me because of my previous experience with the DX. I am however, not too familiar with the ADB interface. I have done quite a bit of modding and flashing my X, "semi-manually" rooting my device before Z4root hit the market, but I never spent any time with ADB or "pushing" files, and manually rooting. I hope it's more easy than hard, I just got to make sure I don't run into anything tricky that could potentially ruin or brick it...
GB or ICS for tether
Sorry for the noob question but been combing the threads for some answers to this - I have only gotten the wireless tether to connect once (on pc) after experimenting with both the most recent beta as well as the 2.0.7 version of the app. I have seen people say the beta only works with ICS based roms but not sure if that is verified. I am running Nils Business GingerSense and love the rom, can't get the tether to work!
I got the 2.0.7 running and connected my pc, after I stopped the tether and tried to start up again I couldn't even see my rezound. Now I can't get my pc or transformer to see the wifi at all. Even going back to beta... any help and/or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Hey guys I recently got the Amaze (2 days ago). When I got it, it was on GB but I went to T-mobile to get a new sim and the guy updated my phone to ICS. Now ive tried rooting it but it does not work, i tried with the all tool kit program and the one click root. IS their anything I am doing wrong? Also do I have to be in recovery mode or can I be at the home screen? Debugging is on.
The only thing I can tell your doing wrong is your not reading enough. There is an Amaze Bible. There are How To Root Tutorials. It's been asked multiple times.
I haven't used All In One (AIO) Tool Kit but I think there's a Tutorial.

If you searched the word "root" in my thread, there are many posts mentioning that it does not work and I said I was gonna eventually fix it.
On other terms, flash this in recovery
Try the tool kit again, note that you have to install a custom recovery before trying to root via the tool kit, once you have a custom recovery, boot into recovery then hit the root option, it should ask you to press enter once you're in recovery, do this and you shall be rooted.

On a separate note,
I very much appreciate the help that can be received here and there quite a few tutorial threads. The problem I think some people have, including me, is that what is written doesn't always make sense to those who don't live and breathe android. I'm fairly tech savvy (have built computers, know basic bash scripting, and have spent excessive amounts of time troubleshooting and hacking in Linux) but instructions like "flash stock RUU in hboot" don't make much sense until you've spent a lot of time reading.
Hasoon's tool is very close to what is needed. Hopefully whatever issue there is with the root option can be fixed. Or maybe it's just a matter of better understanding of how to use it.

Look at the threads I made, I rarely ask a question because I found it from Google.
You can learn a lot by yourself and just searching stuff online. Not that hard lol

I completely agree. I've taught myself tons about programming and such using Google, but you also have to have enough background knowledge to know what to look for and recognize when you find it. I've mostly asked questions here but it wasn't until I did a lot searching and trying things. Eventually, when something doesn't work you can stop and ask a question or keep messing around. In the later case, you either brick the phone or become one of the experts (after bricking the phone ).
Problem with google is that it often points to a thread here which invariably results in someone new asking a question that's been asked before. Happens in all forums.

I'm currently running through a ton of treads trying to make sense of everything and just had a couple quick high level questions.
After rooting do roms keep the beats audio feature?
Will this phone also use the clockworkmod interface?
I'm seeing different responses, some are saying hboot and some saying bootloader, which will give me the closest setup to my DINC?
Thanks so much everyone, looking forward to see what all you guru's are cooking up around here for this phone!
1. I think the sense ROMS keep the beats audio, but there is a flashable mod found here that will add beats to any Rom and make it work with all apps within that rom
2. Clockworkmod is very buggy on the Rezound so you will want to use Amon RA (link is in my signature) which is similar to Clockworkmod but not exactly the same.
3. HBoot and bootloader are the same thing. Battery pull and hold volume down and power to access. Or reboot to bootloader if your rom supports that in the power down menu.
Check out Nil's ICS topic, Lots of good info there, Im sure if you had the Dinc/rooted then you must have tried Nil's Business Sense Rom, His Rezound ICS Rom is even better.
Link to Nil's Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508118
Hitch
1. Keep the phone stock for a week and make sure it is how you like it physically, ie not overheating, and all that jazz
2. Unlock the bootloader or hboot by going to htcdev.com
3. Install amon ra with fastboot commands
4. In amon ra go to developer menu and install the super user thing (not the eng one)
5. S-off by going to unlimited.io
oops i forgot this 5.5 install a modified hboot after you ruu to the latest firmware
6. If you even need help someone has probably had that problem already and had it solved so find that thread!
7. You now can do well pretty much whatever.. flash roms in amon ra, etc do whatever
8. Give me a thanks if i helped
thanks everyone, I'm starting the process now (this is a lot more steps than my DINC was, and seems super complex) and I'm already having issues installing the SDK as it won't see java and setting the environment variable isn't doing crap, I'm gonna stay stock for a bit until I feel like diving deep. I was really hoping it was going to be like the Unrevoked setup where I plug it in and click a button lol

It's honestly not that hard once you get adb up and running... Most of the the root process are laid out step by step and extremely simple... Just follow the steps closely and you'll get it.

with the issues I'm having in windows would it be easier to do it on my wifes mac?
I have a Mac and it was super easy. All you have to do is install java, install the Mac sdk, and ur good to go. U don't need anything complicated like drivers or any of that crap on the Mac.
You can do it on a Mac, but contrary to modern belief, it is just much simpler on windows.

That's far from true. It's much much easier on a mac. I've done it on both trust me.

PROTIP: For you and whoever else is new at this, you don't need to install the whole SDK environment as outlined on the HTC Dev website. If you're not developing code, that is a whole lotta unnecessary downloading and headache.
Get latest drivers as a part of HTC Sync if you don't have them installed.
Hasoon2000's toolkit has all the files you need from the HTC Dev process, no need to install the SDK and Java.
Really all that is needed from the SDK process are drivers and adb and fastboot commands plus their supporting files. Whenever you need adb or fastboot commands you can just open a command prompt directed at the toolkit's Data folder. Bam.
Now get that thing unlocked and get to the fun part, shorting it out with some cabling or a paper clip!

I'm considering making multiple accounts so I can thank you more than once, that is a pot of gold. 5 mins later I'm doing backups in recovery and trying to pick a new rom while that completes.

Oh really?
I thought it was more complicated because there is a whole separate thread on it.
Hey guys let's curb the windows vs mac thing at the end of the day we all know Android is better XD and that's something we can all agree on haha

We aren't arguing. I just thought it was more complicated on a Mac.

I was under the impression that this was easier on a PC but regardless you can only run the S-OFF program in PC or Linux. My girlfriend and I only have Macs so I waited until I could use my parent's PC to S-OFF. That was for the best anyway because It gave my a month of other people's trial and error to learn from.
Anyway I would say this is far more complex than my DInc, especially when it feels like half of the community is holding its breath on AOSP. good luck.

It's the same just minus the drivers and crap. When I had to set up adb and fastboot on a Pc it took me FOREVER to find the damn drivers. The mac I just had to install java and then the sdk.
The whole separate thread is for people who can't think for themselves
I've recently purchased a Thunderbolt from eBay (which I know is always a bit sketchy, and that the device is getting a bit older) but so far it's been a relatively good little phone. I'm definitely enjoying the LTE over the 3G my iPhone 4 had before I accidentally murdered it. I have the HTC Dev unlock on this phone, but the stock ICS rom pushed out by Verizon and HTC feels bloated and slow to me, having come from the iPhone 4 running a jailbroken iOS 6.1.2.
Would someone be so kind as to point me towards a fast, stable ICS or Jellybean ROM and instructions on how to install it and a proper recovery on my phone? I'm not all that picky about appearances, and I wouldn't mind running stock Android either if someone can tell me how to get it running on this phone. Currently I'm running all of the latest updates courtesy of the previous owner (I'm up to HBOOT 1.08, ICS 4.0.4, software version 7.02.605.10 710RD).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
EDIT: After much more tinkering, I have managed to get Clockwork Mod Recovery running on my phone, but I would still very much appreciate if someone had a suggestion for a ROM that runs quickly and efficiently.
Look through the Development forum here and head over to Infected Roms. Lots of answers to your questions in both places. Just takes a little time go through the threads to find what you need.

I just mashed my Rezound, so I'm back on the TBolt as well and had to go through the same thing. Before I go all out on this, I can tell you that the process to get this done isn't that bad considering I will compile all the instructions here, but you have to flash a patch through HBOOT then relock the phone, take it back to an older ROM, run revolutionary on it for s-off, load radios, then back to ICS lol. If you think it will be worth it to you, let me know an I will post the links. It's just a bunch of back and forth and I took me about a week to find all the pieces.

Yeah, there's a lot of pages to go through, and apparently I'm not searching for something the right way.

Hey, works for me! I really want to like Android, but Verizon's firmware is so bloated and slow it makes it hard to do. I'm willing to go through the work if it means I can get a phone that runs the way I want.
My cousin keeps telling me I need to run pure Android, and honestly, that's what I'd like to do if at all possible, but any ROM that runs efficiently is good for me.

Go to this page to start the journey http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thundebolt-hacking-guides/8695-guide-how-gain-root-s-off-after-taking-ics-ota.html and just FYI, I use 4ext recovery now and love it, but you have to be s-off and rooted to get it. use the QR code found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31966447 It will download and app to your SD card (typically) under "Downloads" and you will need a file manager or root explorer to install it, and I had to download "4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC5" twice before it took.
Then once you have gone through those steps (I had TWRP recovery and it worked) you will be on GB. To save some time, go to http://forums.infectedrom.com/ and create an account. I doesn't have to be verified by the admin to download. Once your account is created, go to http://forums.infectedrom.com/showthread.php/1912-ROM-Official-Thunderbolt-ICS-Rooted-Deodexed-Stock?p=67120&viewfull=1#post67120 and download the radio and flash it, then download the ROM of your choice. I used the "DEBLOATED Rom Deodexed version: 7.02.605.10 710RD". It's stock with all of the VZW crap pulled out and deodexed. I'm haveing to revert back to a custom GB ROM because the new ICS kernel doesn't have the built-in support for the 2-way call recording feature, but everything else works like a dream. I agree, that for the TB, staying close to stock on ICS is a good idea since development has dwindling for this device. Cheers and let me know if you need any help with this. just reply here

I've been attempting to do just that, and every time I try to load my recovery, I keep getting ClockworkMod. 4ext fails to install, despite the app saying it was successful.

I don't quite remember how I got to the end result of 4ext actually working but I remeber I had to download it twice from the installer app, and told the app to wipe cache + dalvik... but just to make sure, check these steps:
1) make sure you're rooted with s-off and have SU and busy box installed.
2) download the updater app file from the link provided in the QR code (from previous post).
3) make sure "unknown sources" is enabled in settings so you can install the updater app, then find the app in your download folder on your SD card and install it.
4) open the updater app and give it SU permissions, then run the install/update option and select the proper file. This will also be stored on your SD card (in a 4ext folder I think...don't quote me on that though).
after install you should be good, but I believe you can push via ADB as well. Attached is a PDF from the Dev on this as well.
---------- Post added at 12:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:26 PM ----------
Sorry, I guess the PDF was too large. just remove the "http://forum.xda-developers.com/" out of the link and replace it with "http://www.". http://forum.xda-developers.com/4ext.net/install.pdf I can't post external links yet.
Now that I am thinking about it. Did you update super user or super su after getting root? The app itself probably needs it and the binary as well. You can update the binary by opening the app. It should prompt you to update it.
