Better to use either of these for tethering:
WiFi Tether
Barnacle
Don't use the Market link for Barnacle at the Barnacle site. Instead click on this Barnacle .apk to download the apk.
Why do you say its better to use one of those?

Service provider can more readily "see" if you are tethering using APN method. If you search you will find threads discussing it.

Hi folks,
Got my phone from T-Mobile. Rooted it with OCLF. Then installed wireless tethering app on the phone. After I launch the app and then tried to find the wifi spot from my laptop, nothing is found.
I'm using the original 2.1
This kind of problems never happened on my previous N1. Is this a common problem for this Samsung phone? Any solutions? Thanks.
You rooted with the oclf? Download terminal emulator and and type in su, you should get a pop up asking for root access, if not you aren't rooted

Yes. I checked. I do have root.
The problem is that the wifi tethering (SSID) is not show when I search the available wireless spot on my laptop (or iPad)
Install a Bionix Rom and you will have no issues. It's built right in under wireless and network settings.

Any solutions without flashing a new ROM?
Worked for me with barnacle. You can get it from the market for free.

Is there any way I can use my x10 as a modem so that i can surf the web on my computer?
Try PDAnet free or if you are rooted try barnacle WiFi tether. Both are in Market. Good luck.

Use PDANet or Barnacle You can get them in market
Barnacle is nicer because you don't have to install anything on the computer to make it work. It just looks like an access point.
You do have to root your phone, but it is super easy if you download z4root from the market.
Great!! Its working fine for me. Thanks guys.

Does anyone have the stock usb/ wifi tether apk that comes with the stock 2.2 froyo upgrade for vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I believe its built into the settings.apk
I'm curious as to why you need it. If you're still running 2.1, I recommend upgrading to 2.2, it's been a daily driver for me since jk2. Or if you don't, there is a mod for mobile ap to allow for wifi tether, but not the usb internet sharing.

my 2.2 from team whiskey comes with mobile ap for wireless , and has a setting to share internet using usb also... if you dont want to update, download an app called pdanet
You can also use the Android Wifi tether app but you phone must be rooted.

I'm using Bionix-V but cannot find an app related to wifi and wireless tethering nor do I see any options under "Wireless and network." Consequently have been using PdaNet. Am I missing out on a simpler approach?
It's in settings -> wireless and network where it's always been.
Its called mobile ap

THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I was looking under Settings|Wireless and network|tethering and also perhaps under applications! Couldn't find the darn thing anywhere! But now I see it under Settings|Wireless and network|Mobile AP. One of the great things about Android is all the flexibility. Unfortunately, it is also real easy to miss something!
Thanks again....

Thing is theres is alot of open wifi in my appartment and id rather use my phone instead of getting a wifi card.
Thanks.

Look on google for barnacle wifi tether. Its a wireless wifi hotspot. I use it for my laptop.
How does the USB tether option in settings work? Do I need to have some special software on my computer for it to connect? Also, probably should have asked this first, does USB tether work on jokers cm9 yet? If not would a third party app work? I've tried clockworkmods tether app and it wouldn't connect.

Pdanet cost money. The one built into the ROM is free (I hope lol) but idk how to get it setup on my computer. Supposedly there's a cwm program as mentioned above but I've googled and can't find anything. I just want to be able to tether using the feature built into cm9/10.
