Easy Root 'n Rom - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is a nub question I know, but I've been reading these forums for a while now that I got my Thunderbolt and I was just curious.. is there an easy 1 click root for Thunderbolt yet? like the universal Androot or somthing? I really want to root mine and put a stable GB rom on it, really liking the look of BAMF, but I'm very hesitant because I really dont' want to brick my phone, done it before and it was a pain in the BLEEP to recover it, course it was a Zio M6000 too LOL... Anyhow is there an easy root out there yet? and are any of the GB BAMF Roms stable enough to use the netflix APK on and not worry about brickign too much? I'm hesitant because I'm not overly wealthy or anything and I dont' want to brick my new phone I just dumped some cash on lol thanks!

New Info (Post mentioned below): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969 (If you are going to use this, please make sure you understand what all it does: and "When in doubt, know your way out.")
Not that I'm aware of, however the root process documented in the stickies is very easy to follow, given that you have adb working on your computer. None of the GB roms are "stable" as they are all based off of a leaked sense rom, but that being said I've been running Gingeritis with very little problems.
If you really are interested in changing up your stock rom (and I would, the battery life out of the newer kernels by imoseyon is outstanding!) take a few minutes to read up and get ADB working on your machine. Once you are comfortable with that, download the stock RUU floating around here - You would have to screw up pretty badly to brick the phone, just follow the instructions. JCase and crew have done a very nice job with trying to be cautious with every step.
Also, not trying to be a prick but fair warning - posting questions in the dev forum is a no-no unless you are releasing something dev related, you'll likely get some not so nice responses for doing it. Good luck in learning!

There is no one click root, but it doesn't get much easier than captainkirks one click script. The most user action involved is putting the RUU's on the SD Card and hitting "y" for yes.

right about now....
seriously i know we all were noobs at one times but these types of questions get really annoying. seriously its NOT HARD AT ALL. i was really scared at first n when i actually took the time to read up on ADB, i was like duh its seems so damn easy. once i first rooted my Nexus One, it really was easy. the TB is just as easy. really stop taking the easy way. stop being lazy, take an hour out of each day to read up on ADB so u can root when youre ready. u WILL NEED to know about ADB. not everything here in the forums will be handed to u easily. u will need to pull files, edit them and what not. seriously these types of people need to stop being lazy and read up on some ADB. this is coming from a person who is so-so with this type of stuff. seriously, the manual way is NOT HARD AT ALL

and there are a few reports about TB bricking on GB but not so much to be overly scared about. im still playing it the safe way n sticking with BAMF Remix 1.7 for now til its more stable or til we get a lot more info on the brickings of TB on GB

I appreciate the information given here. I know that I'll always have to wade through a bit of criticism and flaming when you're learning and those who have done so I understand your frustration but be patient, not everyone has your understanding as yet of the systems and how they run. The most I have ever done with regards to rooting and roms is to use androot on my zio and install some launchers.. so manually playing with my phone's innards is a little daunting.
I will take your advice Jay and read up on ADB, while I don't like your attitude, I do understand it and thank you and others for the information you offer. I will look into all of these options and thank you all for your input

This is what I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I came from the D1 and have a lot of experience with adb and was honestly just lazy when I rooted the TB. When I rooted my D1 there was no easy root and I did everything manually which was a huge help later on in (root) life. I highly suggest that you do it manually at least once. Then later when you're lazy like me you do an easy root.

No one should have to be flamed or critisized for asking questions. The only stupid questions are the ones not asked.
Even experienced to advanced users still ask questions.

Download both files. Rename the first MR1 RUU and put on the SD card. NOT in a folder. Power off/hold volume down and then press the power button. Follow the instructions on the screen. After its done reboot. Then, delete that file off the SD Card. Rename the second one and put where the first one was. Do the same thing again. You will be unrooted with S=on.

Don't let others get you down, I'm far from a NOOB yet still get called it because someone has to answer a question rather than ignore it even though its not a big deal. I rooted mine coming from a D1, I used the method here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616) it took about 30 mins and it was no big deal at all. I was on GB and then went back to Froyo since I have no problem waiting another month or so for something that would be more stable to come out.
Good luck with whatever way you go. ADB can be a pain in one way or another. There is an ADB for dummies that someone posted one click installs ADB and it works perfect I have been using that. The commands are easy so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

That makes it seem so easy. Be back in a few un rooted . Thanks that was easy just had a brain fart. Put in the simple terms it was easier. Can someone verify all my settings are correct or near stock?

[Q] Silly girl who loves cool stuff needs help with her vibrant!

hello everyone, im a newbie to this who idea of rooting phones and making them do what u want, and i must say it turns me on hahaha jk anyways i have no technical knowledge and was wondering if u fine gentlemen could tell me whats the best way o root my phone or if i can pay someone in my area to do it for me and add new stuff to it like the one click lag fix n stuff like that. please help thanks guys!
You should start off with this thread:NOOB GUIDE: HOW TO ROOT/ODIN/FLASH/RECOVER ** 04/28/11 W/ Videos **
It's always better to understand what you're doing to your phone before you attempt to do anything (no one wants to permanently damage their phone).
Well you picked a good phone to learn on lol, the vibrant is by far the easiest to root/flash custom roms on.There are basically 3 things you need. superoneclick on your PC, rom manager on your phone and the rom you want to flash.
But as stated above you def want to read up just to make sure you know what you are doing, but its not difficult at all! The link posted above should def explain everything. Also if you ever run into a problem, just google the problem lol i am usually able to find a link to a thread on here explaining how to fix it GL!
I kinda got in the habit of rooting via Z4root app on my phone after using odin to go back to android 2.1 (eclair). I just keep the .apk file on my SD card.
The reason I did this was because while odin is an annoying and buggy program to deal with, it is the only way to truly reset your phone to stock if you mess something serious up. It is a fail-safe of sorts so it is worth it to familiarize yourself with that process.
The "noob guide" posted should outline what you need to flash back to stock 2.1 which is odin (duh), a .pit file, and a .tar zip file.
I go back to 2.1 since z4root I believe has to be used on eclair? I could not get it working on stock 2.2 froyo at any rate.
once your phone is rooted the fun part begins from there you can download many different rom zip files which are available in the vibrant development section. General rule of thumb is to always FLASH ROMS at 100% battery.
Head to the market and pick up Rom Manager and Titanium Back up. Open rom manager once you have a rom downloaded and "reboot into recovery" (to manually flash a rom) press volume keys to select "reinstall packages", wait, then reinstall packages again. This should now be the green clockwordmod (commonly referred to as cwm) recovery menu. Scroll down to "install from zip", "choose zip", "download", select the rom you downloaded, yes, go back, reboot system.
The phone will take awhile to boot up, when it does let it SIT FOR TEN MIN. This is to help iron out any bugs. Reboot the phone. Sign into google and restore apps if you saved them in titanium back up. Reboot again just for good measure
If you decide to flash a different KERNEL than the one that comes with the rom, you don't have to be at 100% battery, just go into cwm and flash the kernel zip like you would a rom.
When not flashing from stock it is recommended that you:
-factory/data reset
-install rom
-clear cache partition
-advanced> clear dalvik cache
All while in cwm.
Remember to hit the "Thanks" button to the creator of the ROM / KERNEL / THEME / APP you apply.

Hey hun.
You picked a good phone to start learning about those things.
The Vibrant is extremely easy to root and do pretty much everything.
Just keep in mind these two things: Follow the instruction PRECISELY and unless it's absolutely necessary, do NOT use ODIN.
At least not at first, after you get a handle of your phone, you can start experimenting.
Also, when flashing ROM/Kernels, etc, read the comments first for issues that might surface.
As they say, always read the OP completely, then do what you need
EDIT: LOOOOOOL
Can't believe I fell for a troll.
Geez, I sure have been away from the internet forums for too long...
Just google rooting a samsung vibrant. You can also find out how to do it all over this forum. Plus roms pretty much install them selves now once you have everything set up... Read in to it about and you will find its super easy.

[Q] to root or not to root

i have no idea what kernels, roms and modems are, yet i want my phone to be as fast as possible with the least amount of lag, to be able to download better apps (root required), and to uninstall bloatware(?). will "voiding my warranty" be beneficial to me and make me EXTREMELY happy with my vibrant as opposed to just fairly happy with it, or does it involve things way over my head that wont be worth my time and possible risk (bricking it)? to root...or not to root...? thanks for your opinions and advice!

IMO the benefits of rooting your phone does outweigh the benefits of leaving it stock (for warranty purposes). It looks like you know what you can achieve by rooting but before you decide to, I really do recommend that you read up on every sticky there is on this forum. I did tons of lurking and even when I joined, I literally lived in the reference threads before I decided to root mine and my husband's phone. Personally, I did it because our phones began to lag so much and my hubby's phone was in desperate need of reflashing to stock (it was crashing randomly and relocking itself after unlock - it was a good thing I had saved our codes). Just having ROM Manager and Titanium Backup saved so many butts on this forum when unfortunate things happen while experimenting.
Take my advice...
Rooting your vibrant can be "glorious"... if you follow directions.
First read some "first time" threads... get familiar etc..
Some advice.
1. Use one click root, or some other "one click solution"
2. After rooting, start small by installing clock work mod.
MAJOR: Make a backup... NANDROID BACKUP SAVES EVERYONE!
3. After this, start applying some mods like lockscreen etc...
4. Then start by flashing kernels. (start with voodoo... this makes the phone fast)
(then flash bali, you will get 1.5 days worth of battery life, with 10% to spare)
5. Then flash roms! They can change your phone experience!
Be sure to read directions, and don't be afraid to ask 10000's of questions on threads to make sure you know what you are flashing (just make sure it hasn't been mentioned on the first post)
do i only have one kernel and one rom at a time or can you have mult kernels/roms installed?
Op, I would encourage reading the guides in my signature. Let me know if I can help.
Rooting is the best thing you can do for your phone in my opinion.
Bro take a look at some post and you better follow directions... its the best thing for your phone, just like a new girl u have and u ask how the hell you could get her.. lml get familiar with odin because it will be your best friend to unbrick... also get z4root app to easy root, search in the bar for it cuss its not in the market... anything just ask me brother..... but first get familiar with all about rooting this phone ... gonna skip some bricks like happened to me when started

Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Root is great fella read up on it. You can always unroot and what not if you need to take it back
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
And I would say the exact opposite about one-click roots.. your choice man. And this phone is incredibly (incredibly) hard to brick...

Not really. Its not difficult at all. Just read and it will make sense. Its similar to the og evo root method. Hit the button, flash recovery, reboot.
I Haz 3D
Point is, Just do it. You will learn a lot from just doing while trying not to fathom the "big words" or "strange names" for different stuff. YES, something CAN happen, but usually follow the steps and all will be fine. When I first rooted my first phone I was not really linguistic in the lingo we use now for rooting such devices, it reminded me of the ole AOL WAREZ days and those silly but fun AUto programs we used in the chat rooms. I say... Take the plunge.
EDIT: Don't be lazy (like me) and NOT read it. There is no ONE click easy method if this is your first time. Once you have rooted this phone though your ext and future roots will eb easier and make more since.

I just had a suggestion, we should just make it simple for this fine phone and devs
or someone should develop a simple unrevoked root and unlock method just like the evo uses.
Current methods are rediculous, all though i got it done, its a hassle for others.
We need to get clockwork through rom manager and get this phone goin with some rom development
the hassle of unlocking bootloader is to much!!
Cmon devs make a one click tool!!
oh mercyful lord, please forgive us, for we have forsaken the most sacred rule!
we have so forgotten that in hacking a device we must not only defeat all security measures on said device, we must do more then include instructions for free on how to do it yourself. we must make it so it does it for you.

seriously dude? you think that this thought hadnt crossed anyones mind? unrevoked does htc, hence why there is no unrevoked for all the locked moto bootloaders. rather then complain about it take a dive, learn some code figure out how things work and try helping.
and in case you didnt pick up on the irony of it all, check teh dev section i have a one click... just need to fix it thats all >_>

It takes some nerve to start a topic like this. If you don't like what it takes to unlock this phone feel free to find a better way yourself or move on to another phone.

Guys, let's not let this forum get away from us. I've been apart of other forums that have been ruined by this same sense of entitlement. This stuff will all happen but you have to be patient. The Photon has only been out a very short time.
Besides, rooting is a very simple procedure with ADB. As Shabby said, the one click is on the way. Ticking off the developers is not the way to get things done faster. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Please remember that before posting nonsense like this.
This thread is hilarious.

I am by no means a dev or any major IT training, but I found the dock root very easy. I rooted 2 phones in about 10mins and it was my first time.

Obviously written by someone who didn't have an Evo on launch day, and doesn't remember that Unrevoked wasn't out until the phone had been out for quite some time. The original root method for the Evo was considerably more difficult than the new Photon method.

Exactly.....I seem to remember it being like 16 or 18 steps, with some flash websites and and several reboots involved......I remember it took me like 3 hours...this one took me all of 5 minutes following the instructions so graciously provided.....I personally would like to thank Shabby, Y4J, and Caulk, and everyone else for even getting root and an unlocked bootloader option so quick.....OP be thankful for what you got, when I was your age there wasnt even such a thing as a cell phone.....let alone a smartphone that can run NORAD off half of its CPU ....seriously

By the way you type and spell, maybe you are just too dumb for a method like this. I am a complete noob when it comes to rooting and didn't have a single problem following the instructions. Don't assume that others are as stupid as you are. Most people here are happy with what has been given to us.
Im sorry. I know the question wasn't great. But if its really ok for this guy to be torn a new one for a simple question then xda has really changed for the worst.

Totally agree. He had a suggestion, he did not insult anybody's intellectual property, nor did he directly or indirectly insult any dev for not putting out good work. He simply indicated that current methods are a little involved and that in an ideal environment, we should strive for simplicity. I don't know any dev worth their salt who isn't compelled to debug their code, to improve it, and to learn from their mistakes. Frankly I'm a little surprised at the reaction. Especially the comment about wanting to put the OP "out of his misery." Where I come from, any analogy to terminating somebody's life is incendiary and uncalled for.
no it wasnt a suggestion, it was a call to the devs to hurry up and make things.

would you rather not have a way to unlock it?
again my issue with it is here is a guy who hasnt done anything saying this needs to be done. if someone steps up and says hey i wanna do this or starts to ask question so they can contribute. ive no issues with helping them, but to bold face claim that things need to be done, and on a timely schedule is an issue for me.
why? coming from the epic im sure a lot of users can agree with teh issues that phone had, too many people were run off by people demanding crap.
Guys please ignore these type of threads.... Comming from the epic i would hate for 99% of users to lose great amazing devs because of the demanding 1%
You guys are doing great please ignore the non sense.

Is my Galaxy S2 Rooted?

Hi Everyone,
I just got my Galaxy S2 back, model number GT-19100M. I had sent it in to get it unlocked, the sim and the carrier unlock. I assume that this would be rooted to have accomplished this?
They had an issue unlocking the carrier and had to reflash the phone to gingerbread before they were able to unlock the carrier. So I got it baack and the version is 4.0.3 now.
So I did some googling about how to tell if it was rooted. Now, from my understanding that to flash the phone with a rom it would have to be rooted. So I came across about using Root Checker, So i installed it and it said it wasnt rooted, I then installed ConnectBot and the thread (not from here) said that if a prompt came up with a # then it meant it was rooted, and if it came up with a $ at the prompt then it wasnt rooted. Low and behold it showed a $.
So all in all how do I tell if it was rooted? It cost me 50$ and well over a week and a half to get it back. So were the two applications correct and if not what is the right way to tell if it was rooted or is there something I should notice on the phone?
Thanks for any and all help on this situation.

1) u can check ur kernel and see.
2) also u can check for an app SuperSU or Superuser's presence in app drawer, if present ur phone is rooted else no.
3) u can install some apps like root explorer/browser etc and see, since they wrk only with root prievilage

Hi thanks for the reply,
I downloaded and ran SuperSu and got this pop up "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!". So then I downloaded Root Browser Lite, i opened it up and got a list of folders. So now I'm confused, I have SuperSU saying that there is a problem, and with Root Browser Lite it runs and gives me a list of folders.
My kernel version is as follows: 3.0.15-I9100MUGLD3-CL377577 [email protected] #3
From my understanding and please correct me if i am wrong, but to do both unlocks (sim and carrier) that it needs to be rooted?
Before I handed the phone over to the computer store to unlock it, I had asked if it would be rooted and they said yes, but i didnt copy all the stuff in the about phone, but I was supplied with my unlock code to use when i pop a different sim in it.
Also, when I looked at the messages when i got it back that there was a text from rogers and the carrier that i was using was Virgin, so it looks as though it was properly unlocked.
I dont have anyone near me at the moment with a different carrier sim card (My girlfriend uses Telus, I suppose I could pop hers in but she might throw a fit and think that I could screw her iphone up lol)
So what would be my next plan of action?
Thanks for your reply

well by seeing ur kernel it seems that its a stock kernel hence ur phone is not rooted.
may be after unlocking ur phone they might have flashed the stock kernel back to unroot ur phone i suppose

After thinking for a moment, this does look like the kernel that was previously on it, I had played around with it before hand and I remember some things and the kernel looks familiar..
Well I believe you are correct that they reflashed it with the stock rom...Why they would do that is beyond me lol.
So I guess I am going to start rooting this on my own, would you please direct me to rooting this model? I know I can search this forum but I have done that before and noticed different ways of doing it. I just want to make sure that i do this properly using the proper thread and if i can do this properly then Im going to start on the path to rooting my S3 , So i guess my s2 is my practice
I do appreciate your replies and help with my situation

nothing is confusing as long as u read and understand carefully what has been specified in those rooting method threads.
but still i would suggest u simply keep out of this rooting thing, if ur not sure about the same and unable to understand things about rooting properly

I have read the rooting methods, and again reading it slower, I am not sure about this busybox thing, i think where i am getting confused because it doesnt seem to pop out to me saying if its ok to uninstall busybox and if i did would it still be rooted. I really dont some program running in the background to keep it rooted.
I have been writing software for over 5 years and i figured that this would be a walk in the park. Sit me infront of visual studio and i am a wiz with c#/Asp and sql, but with this i feel like complete noob and i am in actuality. Which is irritating me.
The reason behind having the desire to root this phone is because it should have been done when i got it unlocked 2) because with a rooted phone i have more options and control over this phone 3) because i dont know how and for being able to program that i should be able to do this. It seems like a different ball game and in all honesty knowledge is power and what i dont know how so it is a need to know how to do it. regardless if i wreck the phone, trial by fire i suppose. I cant learn if i dont attempt it and make the mistakes. When you learn how to do something and have come across making mistakes you tend to keep the knowledge more and appreciate what is learned.
Sorry, I got on my soap box on trying to justify doing this lol. But I do appreciate what you suggest. But Im going to try it and hopefully bring me out of my noob status lol.
i will keep you posted
Its not rocket science and what a load of rubbish about doing things wrong and wrecking your phone in order to learn.
What you do is read about other clowns wrecking their phones and dont do what they done-so you learn without any risk.
Just get rooted for now so you can use them fancy apps to get more control over you phone.Read about brickbug and look at some of the rom threads and also learn about cwm and odin.

Forgive me for using the wrong words, I did not say to do things wrong and wreaking my phone. I should have phrased that differently, IF i do it wrong and wreck it somehow then it is a lessoned learned.I'm in no way out to wreck my phone, thats ridiculous. I have made many mistakes during programming that I have learned and remembered what not to do, some people learn the hard way to retain what they did wrong and not to repeat it. Not everyone learns the same way.
I completely understand about reading how others wreck their phone so i can learn without risk, and to read up on odin and brickbug, which is blatantly obvious.
As for fancy apps, you are kidding right? you think i want to root my phone to use fancy apps? I think not. i'm not some kid that likes shiney new things and to be the one to say "look what i got". That comment was utter disrespect. Maybe instead of trying to make me look like a dumbass you could be a little more helpful and not be so blantantly obvious on what i should do, which i already have started doing until i had to reply this.
Is this how you treat everyone that is starting to learn something new? You make obvious statements, mock by saying what isnt rocket science? I highly doubt that when you started doing this that you werent some dumbass in the beginning.
I appreciate the person who was replying to my questions and pointing me in the right direction, he was helpful. You were just being a ****. you know on forums dealing with c#/asp.net I dont act like you do to questions or statements that i feel are silly, especially to people just starting out. You must have been treated the way you treated me when you first started out, how many times did you feel like a dumbass from people that knew what they were talking about? probably still to this day in one way or another you are treated like an idiot. So instead of acting the way you were and still are treated, try acting decent and helpful and not counter-active.
I hope that there isn't more people acting like you did towards me to other people, if so then this isnt a place to learn.
Thanks for the praise.....
I ask myself every day....is rooting really that difficult?.Is this xda or facebook?.Whats with "life stories" included in posts?.Have all them guys that created stickies/guides wasted their time cos noobs/donks like you dont read them?.
And guys like Sun90 are helpful and intelligent....theyve helped me out before.

hey buddy chill for now , in XDA u will face all sort of people, which is quite common ma8.
as for as ur 'Busybox' thing is concern, this is what it means.
BusyBox is a software application that provides many standard Unix tools, much like the larger (but more capable) GNU Core Utilities. BusyBox is designed to be a small executable for use with the Linux kernel, which makes it ideal for use with embedded devices. It has been self-dubbed "The Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux".
it will provide u all necessary things to have access to root of ur phone, while SuperSU or Superuser grants necessary permissions to all those apps which need 'Root Access' to perform efficiently.
if u remove busybox then u will loose root access to ur phone for sure.
hope the above things ar clear for u for now

Hi Sun90,
You are absolutely right when it comes to types of people that I wil come across in this forum or any other forum for that matter, I just didnt expect someone to start flaming right off the bat.
Thank you for the explaination on 'BusyBox', I understand what you are saying. My concern was that I didnt want to have to rely on something that had to be constantly running on my phone to ensure that it stays rooted. I gather from what you said about buysbox that its just tools, and not something that constantly runs. The swiss army metaphor, makes sense.
I have searched through these forums and somethings that may be obvious and cut and dry to people that have done this, isnt always the case to everyone else. I get left with many questions after reading threads. I have read many threads here and throughout online on rooting. Some guides are easy, they tell you how but never the 'why'.
I have heard alot about odin, and I have read things where i plug my phone in and run a 'runme.bat' that does it all but explain why.
Today I'm going to be reading deeper on Odin and Clockworkmod and trying to find the correct secure and unsecure kernel. I hope to run across more people like you that actually are here to help and not wanting to show how much they know by being condescending to make themselves feel better about themselves.
In the end, for me, its not enough to do it but to know the whys behind it. Thank you for your patience and the help.

Well I just downloaded CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip, and Odin3-ver3.5 and am about to follow Chainfire's thread with its step by step guide, i found his guide to be pretty insightful. Another thing I got confused on was the difference between I1900, I1900M and I found out that the only difference between the 2 was nothing. One question though, after i root the phone and if i ever do a factory reset on it does it stay rooted or do I have to do the process over, likewise with busy box.
I did copy down what version my phone is running if something goes wrong...
I'll post back soon with either success or failure.

You won't lose root if you factory reset. Only way to unroot is to flash stock firmware again.
