is there a way I can put a data toggle in the notification bar?
i tried APNdroid, but it isn't working on disabling data connection.
What solutions do you guy use?
Thanks
I have not yet seen anything that works for data toggling on the top notification bar.
My best solution would be to use something like 'extended controls' where u can customize a power widget so u can toggle data, wifi, tether etc. - even works with cameraflash for flashlight.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.extendedcontrols
I use this as a switch for everything.
I use to also use quicksettings, its a great toggle too.
Yeah, I use quick settings. One of the things I miss about miui.
To toggle data usage, you could just use your power button. Keep hold of the power button and wait for pop up menu, you can then activate or de-activate from there. It can be done from anywhere in the phone.

Is this data connection part of your network providers internet usage they give you or something else?

This is the 3G data that you get through your mobile phone connection.
Note that if you turn off the network data connection, you might not be able to receive MMS. You can still receive SMS though.

I have a Vibrant with no data plan (I'm in Wi-Fi 99+% of the time). How can I turn off both the 2G and 3G radios, both to save battery and to make sure I'm not accidentally charged for using data?
I searched around and there are a ton of apps and widgets to toggle between 2G and 3G or disable 3G (Smoda, APNDroid, etc.), but I haven't found a way to turn both radios off. I also poked around in Service Mode, and the only options I found were to toggle between 2G/3G, not turn the radios off. Any ideas?
Not sure you can. Airplane mode will kill the WiFi too. But the best bet would be to stay on 2G and disable data roaming.

Trigger Airplane mode, slide down notification area, turn wifi back on. Bingo. I do this at School in areas where I get no reception at all but has wifi access.

Another option would be *#*# info#*#* then go phone information ..scroll down and hit "turn off radio" and your good to go. Or you can hit menu and press "disable data"

APNdroid shuts them off Ive used when i used my vibrant as prepaid to save battery. After you disable you have to reboot
Thanks for the help, everyone! Airplane mode + wifi is perfect.
(About APNDroid: as far as I could tell, it just changes your APN entries to invalid addresses; it doesn't actually turn off the radio. So you can't use 3G, but I was afraid it would still use the radio while searching for the invalid networks. But I don't have a great understanding of HSPDA, so I could certainly be wrong on that.)
just a heads up, airplane mode also disables calling/texting
Yes the radio would still be searching for networks if you disable the apn
If you get the Juice Defender app, it has a "Toggle Mobile Data" widget. It's a nice 1x1 widget that turns off the mobile data radios (but not Wifi). This is the best solution I've found.

Hi,
I have terrible 3G (UMTS) reception at my office, but good 2G (GSM), so to save battery and make the phone as usable as possible I switch to 2G when at work. I used to go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks and switch on "Use only 2G networks", and lately I've been using the "Toggle 2G/3G" function in the CM7 notification power widget.
However, it is slightly annoying to have to remember this toggle every time I enter/leave the office, so I'd really like to have an app that does this for me. Does anyone know of an app that can toggle 2G/3G based on either location or time? I'm using CyanogenMod 7.0.3 if that makes a difference.
I've tried a few different profile/setting switching apps, but none of them seem to be able to do this (while all can turn APN on/off, which I don't want. I want data enabled all the time, just over GSM part of the time). Even the apps that claim to have a toggle for 2G/3G seem to be just shortcuts to "Mobile Networks" settings.
Would really appreciate any helpful suggestions
You might consider buying Tasker. It can do what you wish even on a geolocation basis. So whenever you enter/leavr certain location proximity it will do whatever you set it to do.
Thanks, tasker does just what I wanted.
Hi guys,
Do you know if AT&T automatically prefers WiFi over 4G? If not, is there a way to set it so that I can save on my 2GB limit imposed by ATT? thanks

Set WiFi sleep policy to "never" - then the only things that will use cell data when you are connected to an access point are market checkins (but not market downloads) and MMS. Maybe not even MMS.
Note that the phone won't automatically connect to open APs that you haven't connected to before.
If you have wifi sleep policy set to "when screen is off", background data will be over the cell connection.

Sorry but I can't find this setting. I'm looking in power saving settings and the only thing i see is turn off wifi when NOT connected with mobile AP. Does mobile access point mean wifi or cell data?

thanks,
just checked and its set to never.
I think you want to control access of data retrieval via cell network, right?
what I did was set the receiver options to airplane mode and then only enable the WiFi. That keeps the cell net from connecting. Also d/l an app to monitor your usage for piece of mind.

With APN On/Off, it's a free app. I turn off the data and can still do everything else. It even has an option to keep MMS enabled
3 out of 4 times my phone fails to disconnect the mobile data network when I connect to WiFi. This is draining my battery unnecessarily.
What could be causing this unless I can fix it so it is automatic I will have to stop using wifi so it doesn't waste power keeping both connections going.
I am running a 2.3.6 rom.
Do you toggle the connections or just enable/disable WiFi? When you enable WiFi and connects, does the 3G icon (the two arrows) appear next to the WiFi icon?
my phone does both I have a program that shuts it completely off when I go to work then back on when i get home based on time.the rest of the time it is on even if I go away which then it just disconnects but wifi is still on.
I have not paid enough attention to when it happens but when it does I have both the wifi icon and the data arrows at the same time.

What program are you using? Might a suggest a change for Juice Defender for example? or many others that do the same thing...
Hi,
I just got this white Skyrocket phone with 200MB data plan.
I heard that when connected to 4G, the phone uses data allowance from the data package, whereas if connected to WIFI (like at home), the data usage doesn't come off my AT&T data allowance.
So I want to disconnect from 4G and connect to my WIFI when I am at home.
At the store, the just told me to make sure that WIFI is showing as on on the top bar (or when you swipe that bar down). They said if WIFI is showing on, it means that the phone is using WIFI connection.
However, I see that at the same time when WIFI is showing on, the "4G" icon is also showing on and looking active! So- they are both looking active! That's why I wonder which connection is my Skyrocket actually using?
It looks like the data I use on WIFI also comes out of my data plan because the data packet is on.
So I had an idea, went to settings-wireless-mobile networks and unchecked "Use Data Packet".
When the above was unchecked, 4G icon disappeared and I could see only WIFI icon on the top bar, which would be good - however, the problem is that now I cannot connect to internet. (I turned the phone on and off- no change)
Does it mean that there is no way on Skyrocket to bypass AT&T data allowance and whether I use 4G or my own WIFI, there is no free internet access on this phone?
Or is there something else I can do to make sure I am connected just to my WIFI and data is free?
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you
This isnt the skyrocket forum.
wrong forum.. don't know about Skyrocket.. this is Galaxy S II SGH-i777
But you can always check by running some speedtest if you know how fast your wifi is.. or just go to settings and make sure it says connected.. or turn off your data when you're not using it.
Grab a program like traffic monitor. It'll show where your apps are getting data from and how much they're using.

Sometimes apps like the market actually use your mobile data connection so both icons will show. From your phone dialer enter *3282# and hit call. It will send you a text letting you know how much data you've used.
