[Q] Help! CRT Animation messed up - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
First off, I hate myself for doing this, because it is the wrong thing to do. But I have done the right things....
I was wondering if any of you would say that you have experienced such a bug or not:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106272
Also, the glow on the edges - it is messed up. it looks like the attached image.
Can anyone PLEASE confirm whether it is a software bug, or a hardware bug? I need to know so I can replace my handset if buggy.
Thank you.
Mo.
P.s. I am a developer myself, so you can talk to me

It is neither a software bug, nor a hardware bug. This is a classic example of an 'operator' bug. As I see you are a 'developer', you will undoubtedly be able to fix it, most probably by pushing back your backed-up files right? You did take back-ups didn't you?
PS I'm sure many folk are curious as to why you posted this question in the development thread. Oh! It must be because you are a developer.
Anyway, either push back your backups, or reflash the ROM.

Allgamer please move to Q&A section..
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

thanks for the reply.
I posted this in the Q&A but there was no answer (Given 100 or so views!), so I thought I need to post this in dev to see whether any of you had the same problem or not.
Well, yes I do have a backup. The question is why it happens sometime after the screen has been on, and not instantly? I mean at first and for the first -say 2hrs- the screen is fine, but afterwards this 'bug' appears.
Nothing gets rid of it, unless you reboot the phone.....
Thanks for the reply,
Mo.

If you can screen capture it, it's not a hardware bug.
p/s: I'm a "Validator"

Still not a reason to post it in dev.
And come on, this is a software bug... Surely it's patently obvious. If you fix your tweak, it should work fine.

... GWES.exe Anyone know what this is all about please and if there is a cure / fix?
This seeme to come up pretty regular when the phone is in hibernation mode and you power it back up yourself. Very strange and pretty odd.

There's not a lot more i can say really mate. The message is as i have said really. White screen, message along the top and then some rubbish about sending to Microsoft, send or don't send. That's it!
I've had this before, from what I gathered on the net it is something to do with the drawing of the graphics on the screen. The advice I found was to simply turn off Windows Error Reporting so that you can ignore it. Its all I did and it worked for me
And if the graphics on the screen look alright to you, then there is no problem anyway!

That's one solution, yes. However, that it only 'masking' the issue. It'll still remain in the system won't it. All you're doing is like... well, ignoring the fact there is a fault which solves nothing!
Yes, but it's such a minor fault. And after a couple of days of not seeing that annoying message you'll find that you start sleeping well again.
The only other way to get rid of it is to remove recently added programs to see which one caused it, it will only be a minor incompatibility issue.

If it's done this from day one then is does sound like a corrupt ROM. You'll need to either ask for another TG01 under warranty or wait till xda release a ROM.

Results - Orange diagnostics test shows handset as FAULTY based on power test. Replacement arriving tomorrow.
Someone on Orange... do me and yourself a favour... ring 150, option 1, option 3 and tell them from time to time your phone is rebooting every now and then (even if it is not doing this) and could they run a test. I wanna know if they are ALL bugged in some way or another.
The good thing is, if you have any probs with your phone in the future, you can quote them that is was diagnosed as faulty so you have comeback so it's a win-win situation
If you decide to do this and they DO find a fault, great, no problem but if you've personalized your phone, be polite and tell them 'well, i think i'll stick with it another week but you have it on record now anyway eh' and they'll be fine with it.
Honesty eh... damn, what a concept!
Yep, check out my post about GPS problem. Orange said that was a fault and a replacement was sent next day, guess what, I still have the same fault on this one. Hope you have better luck!

GS2 has stopped vibrating

I'm not sure when exactly it happened, but my phone has stopped vibrating. No matter what rom I flash, even if I go right back to an unrooted stock rom, it won't vibrate no matter what settings or apps I use.
I know people have had this issue before, but I can't find a fix through the searches I've done.
Anyone have an idea? I'm considering just taking it in for repair, but that would leave me without a phone

Pretty sure this is a hardware failure of the vibrator. You probably don't have a choice but to take it to repair.

I'd be interested in a possible software fix for a probable hardware failure as well.
Here's an easy way to test. Download Z-DeviceTest from the market. It has an entry for "Vibrator". Open that, touch the screen to test. That just sends a simple signal to the vibrator to turn on. Does it vibrate?

Thanks for the heads up on that app. I can rule out any chance of a software fix. This is a definite hardware failure.
I better start making backups of everything, put the phone back to stock and reset the counter.
Thanks for the help man.

[Q] HyDrOG3N-ICS 25.03 - com.android.phone force close

I had this problem on the 23.03 as well, but didn't notice until this morning when I tried to make a very important business call from work
Much to my dissapointment I cannot make any phone calls using Hydrogen-23.03
So I updated to 25.03 since it is out now
Same problem
After some quick re-flashing and testing I find the problem is to do with the screen density....
When the phone is set for mdpi (160) the com.android.phone app force closes as soon as you hit the 'call' button
I have to keep the phone set at standard yucky 240dpi to make any phone calls
I have tried doing the factory data wipe, plus tried wiping the dalvik cache.. also tried deleting the data of Phone app... nothing seems to make it work at 160dpi
It's a known bug on AOKP that the dialer will crash upon making or receiving calls if the DPI is set below 182. Just set it to that and you should be fine.
No idea if a fix is already in the pipeline.

Will I have any Market issues at 182? I used to choose 160 because it's a standard option, I assumed it might be more compatible and now I've kinda gotten used to it.... I will try 182 though, because I really want to run Hydrogen (today I flashed FoxHound 7.0 and it's nice and I like the apex launcher, but Hydrogen was just so cool with its AOKP awesomeness and the ROM Control menu is great, plus it's a very cut-down ROM which I prefer because so far I can't get any good battery life from my SGS2
Thanks for the reply!
Yes, using 182 will cause compatibility issues since it's a non standard resolution, but you can get around it with LCD density modder pro.

Phone bricked?
Hi, first post, hopefully at the right place.
I've just installed HyDrOG3NICS. Unfortunately, it seems to have bricked my SII.
I get a black screen, that's all. No recovery mode, no download mode, nothing.
Is there anything I can do to get back either the recovery or the download mode?
Thx a lot

You have a blank profile, and you only state you have an "SII".
Check what model of SII you have. It will be on the label under the battery.
US carriers all carry a completely different model of SII than what this forum is for (GT-I9100). If you have an American carrier model of SII, you are in the wrong place, and flashed a firmware that wasn't meant for your phone, and may have completely borked it.
Hi thought I'd post this hear. Unable to receive and send picture messages since I flashed the from. Quite new to all this so I've probably done something wrong!
Also how do you change the dpi?

You need to be rooted to do this. From what I can tell, HyDrOG3N-ICS 25.03 is NOT rooted unless you root after installing it.
Also, it's pretty rude to hijack threads, unless you are having the same problem the OP of the thread is having. That applies to both you and soho123.
Yikes! Apologies for offending you!
Only posted it in this one as it was linked to the same ROM!
I'll try not to be so rude in future.
But thanks for the reply anyway.

It may be the same ROM, but it's a totally different problem.

if you flashed the HyDrOG3N-ICS 25.03 rom you can change them through
settings>>Rom Control >>General UI >> LCD Density.
It will be set to 240 by default. do not change it unless you know what you are doing.. anything less then 182 causes issues with market and phone app on the AOKP rom which HyDrOG3N-ICS is based on
Thanks nomi.
I'll read into it a bit more before i do anything. Curiosity gets the better of me when I read so many posts about tweeks and features.
ctomgee, point taken. I'll try not break anymore rules. Thanks for heads up.

Sounds off topic, but if when you say "it should work shouldn't it", you are talking about the HyDrOG3N-ICS ROM, then yes, it should work. Unless you didn't follow the installation instructions exactly.
Hard bricked, so your phone does not react with the battery in and any button presses at all?

hope i dont get in trouble for listing stuff here lol...but i really appreciate your help.
I have a gs3 that was supplied by orange uk. I dont know if it has orange specific software on it (the box and phone seem unbranded) but im having several issues with it.
I have been trying to ask the question if i have the latest firmware or if there is one i can update to in a bid to solve the issues i have.
It seems i dont have the option on the phone (under the about phone section) to manually check and kies says no update available however i would be happy to flash with odin if i knew there was something latter that i could use as im getting to the point where ive nearly had enough of the phone.
if there are options to sort it out then willing to try as there are things that i really like about it.
will post a screen shoot with the fimrware info etc and anything you know about it (dont worry if you dont) would be great.

regarding the branding when you boot your S3 is there an orange boot screen?
Ok so I looked over your screenshot and there are difference in are settings as you can see here, looks like are kernel versions are different.
And what are these problems you've been having, as that may be just down to the device.
sorry for answering your questions with more but it will help me answer your questions
SkillfulMmd said:

And if you could send a screen shot with your kernel number and stuff that would be great, I received a firmware update today but im un-branded so that may have something to do with it as branded devices are normally behind.

again thanks for the quick reply
does the screen shot i posted prior to your post not give that information or do i need to look elsware for it?
No my phone does not have any orange splashscreen or any branding on the phone itself (however it was supplied direct by orange). It came in a normall samsung box with no orange stuff all over it however it was sealed with orange sticker on it.
problems so far are:-
1) very laggy in and out of app to homescreen.
2) lots of 'sorry not responding' in various apps (video player, messaging etc)
3) inconsistant battery drain....yesterday i got through the whole day with 50% spare (unplugged at 6.30, charged at 10.45pm) today i was down to 25% by 2.00pm (unplugged at 6.30) nothing different done in usage.
there have been other things but these spring to mind at the moment.
Have to be honest and say its really ruining the exsperience at the moment. My htc one s is so smooth and quick. I had the gs3 on preorder and really looked forward to it (knowing how good sgs2 was) had high hopes for this phone. I really think lots of these problems are possibly down to being quad core as i owned the htc one x for a week and had similar issues.
I'm to sure about your handset it may be unbranded then, you will have to ring Ornage and find out though.
And yeah I updated my post as you posted your as I wasn't expecting you to post a screenshot so quick.
and as far as the issues go, I haven't heard of any of them in the S3 yet other than the UI redraw issue. The battery will need to be recalibrated by the sounds of it this is easy enough to do if you would like to do that?

Well, with all I know about cameras by being a freelancer photographer and with my little knowledge about android what I can say to try to help you is:
Did you wipe your phone between flashes? I'll guess you did since you tried multiple roms. If you didn't, You'd better try to...
If stock ROMs also show the problem I'm afraid to tell you that the only circumstances I saw this kind of problem in my life was in faulty camera sensors.
Were your sensor hit by any kind of laser or a very strong light while trying to snap a picture? Similar problems happened lately with photogs attending a concert. See link:
http://www.diyphotography.net/20000k-red-epic-sensor-burnt-lasers
If this didn't help and the problem started out of nowhere then maybe you got a faulty unit, are you still on warranty? If so, it's time to revert to stock and go to a service center!
Kindly hope I'm very wrong though... Good luck!

My feeling is that this could well be a hardware problem, not a software problem - ie nothing to do with your ROM, as you said you've flashed a few. If it is a hardware fault then see if you can get it fixed under warranty - but as has already been said, you'd need to return to your stock rom first otherwise they wont honour the warranty.
Having said that... were all the ROMS you tried AOSP / AOKP based? While I haven't had the problem you have and it does seem very unique, I have had more issues and bugs with the camera when using ROMS built from these sources on my i9300 than anything else. At the end of the day, Samsung know best how to drive their camera hardware, and so it doesn't surprise me that the vanilla Google roms can be a bit buggy when it comes to device-specific hardware such as the camera.
You could try flashing a stock-based custom rom - one built from Samsung firmware. Omega ROM that you are currently using also do a stock-based rom built on the 4.2.2 Samsung leak, I have used it and can confirm that it was pretty darn stable and the camera worked really well. It has a few mods in it, nothing spectacular, but it is stable.
Hope this helps.
This looks like a hardware problem. But can't be 100% sure.
I had a camera and someone dropped it, after dropping it, the camera started taking photos like that with stripes of different colours.
Did you drop it or water got on it?
very weird
I tried to fix permission, wipe dalvik and wipe bats and the camera starts to work again. Have no idea how long it will take. so far it is working as has never had a problem.
thanks for all answers...
and sorry to post this on the wrong section.
