TV out - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Finally got round to plugging into my TV, everything works fine Music, gallery and all that but on movies all I get is sound and no picture. I read here about HDMI mirroring but didnt make much sense to me. Anyone able to give it in old man stupid speak so i can understand it..LOL
Lordao

If you have gingerblur installed you have to install the entertainment fix. If you have gingerblur with HDMI mirroring then the entertainment center wont work, If you look at the phone closely when using the entertainment center you will be able to see the video playing beneath the entertainment GUI on the bottom edge. If gingerblur is the case then go to the Gingerblur thread and there is a link to get the entertainment center working again using CWM and a simple zip install.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I only have done the 2.1.1 upgrade and remained on stock. I have not installed either of the 2 roms in the development section.
Lordao

what are the file types, resolution and encoding on the movie files? do they play on the atrix itself if you open them in gallery?

They are mainly MP4 files that I have ripped from my DVD collection. They work fine on the Atrix's stock player and I have some xvid avi files I play via mobo player, but both types of files only play audio when connected by HDMI.

Make sure your tv is set to auto detect format, or that it is set to 720p or 1080i.

So out of interest i went to my local Orange shop and plugged the phone into there demo lapdock.
Same thing on that as well no video but sound was fine. But on the phone itself everything plays fine.
Dont get it.

Sounds like a hardware problem, check the hdmi connector on the phone, if its all good, get that bad boy replaced if you still can!!!

[HOW TO] Stream .AVI files to your NOOKcolor

1) Go to here to download AndroStream
2) Download and install the AndroVLC media server on the PC that hosts the .avi files
3) Ensure firewall is set up to allow AndroVLC or disable Windows Firewall
4) Reboot PC (starts up the media server)
5) Download AndroStream-Free from the Android market
6) Use Astro to back-up the AndroStream .apk (I would post the .apk but can't yet on these forums, some one else may be able to post it)
6) Install AndroStream app on your NC. There is a free version to use to get everything working and try out (limited to 2 minutes of playback). The paid version will let you watch entire movies.
6) Run AndroStream on your NC
7) Input the IP address of the host computer in the AndroStream settings
8) Hit the scan button to find the PC. Navigate to your folder with .avi files
7) Watch your streamed .avi files over your wifi at home on your personal 7" viewer
These are the only notes/issues I had:
I did this on an Windows XP machine
It also played .mp4 files fine, but would not play .wmv or .mkv files
Some audio lag, but could be due to the fact I was skipping around the movie to see how well it buffered.
I only tried with Standard Def Xvid .avi files, I did not try any HD
The AndroStream app on the Nook was very simple and quite fast to navigate to your media files on the PC
The movies go full screen and I wasn't able to get out of them easily. I have SoftKeys installed and hitting the nook button took me back to the home screen while using the AndroStream software, so I could not get back to select a different file to watch.
I am looking for other possibly better alternatives to this (different apps on the Nook or solving some of the above issues), because I like the idea of streaming video to my device over wi-fi. Hopefully other folks can provide some input or other apps or methods.
I've been using VLC Stream & Convert. All it needs on the server is VLC running with a web interface.
It converts the video before streaming, so you should be able to play more than mp4 files with it, but I can specifically remember if I've tried an mkv or wmv. The movies only went full screen in landscape mode, if you switched back to portrait the menu comes back for you to pick another file.
Can you put down exactly what you are doing? I tried using VLC and VLC Stream & Convert, but it isn't working. I am controlling VLC on the PC, but only audio is coming through to the NC. Not sure exactly how to set it up to work. Any ideas?
Thanks for this. I couldn't find the app the OP mentioned, but VLC Stream & Convert seems to do the trick.
VLC Stream and Convert
How were you able to get VLC S&C to work? Whenever I try to play on my NC I get an error: "Cannot create play command". I've tried .mkv, .avi, .mp3 and none seem to work. I'm only using a rooted NC, not a Froyo'ed version. Any suggestions would be greatful!
Edit:
I was able to get it working. Had to change the play mode. Sorry for posting the noobish question!
If you are still on stock, eclair, you can stream anything with this method,
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2010/12/27/streaming-epub-books-media-to-nook-color-with-cifsmanager/
BTW, you can do read/write from your NC to your computer if you change the permission settings.
No cifs module for Froyo and CM7 yet .
Ok so i got vlc to work playing avi files, only problem is that I keep getting small videos. What settings do you have?
ok nvm I got the sizing to work

I tried wmv and it works. What res are you guys running, the max 480 width in the free version? Has anybody bought the pro version and tried 640 width to see how it works? It would be cool if we could get the max 854 width that the NC supports for higher def files. I can stream 480 at max bit rate and only get a hiccup every few minutes, so I'm thinking higher res will be possible if you play with the bitrate some.

I was able to get full screen working on the free version, the trick is to override your video settings with the General Settings.
Go to Playback under General, then change landscape video width to fit screen. Make sure this is the last setting you change before playing the video.
You can use PS3 Meadia Server --> UPnPlay
You may want to try PS3 Media Server and UPnPlay in NC. It is running well in Customized Nook Froyo.
I have been using File Expert in combination with RockPlayer lite . File expert has a network tab which allows me to see all my files on my nas server. Which streams directly to my N/C using Rockplayer lite . Streams avi files directly no need to convert . Thanks Jamus0 for this tip .

Can you please tell me how you set it up? Thanks.
"Serviio" is an alternative to PS3MediaServer that I use. I couldn't connect to the PS3MS, but Serviio works just fine

I've got that set, but it's still stretching a 480 pixel wide video across the screen (which is fine, it works and looks pretty good). I was just wondering if anyone had gotten the pro version and tried 640 wide video, or if it lets you actually do 854 wide video to get the max res the NC supports in hardware.

I tried this method and got it to work once in Phiremod for my Nook. After that once successful stream it wouldn't work anymore. It would just give me an error saying 'System Player can't play this file'. Any suggestions what it may be? I have been looking for a solution for this and don't know if it's the default Android player that is giving me this error? How can I make RockPlayer lite the default player?
I've been using plex and works well.. i've also used cifs manager to map to my media server and watch movies through rockplayer.

Audio and video issues with atrix

So I am having some issues with my atrix. I am trying to watch movies off my hdmi and video and audio are both working. The only problem is that the sound is not in sync with the video. Do i need to convert the videos files in order to correct this issue or am i doing something wrong. Sorry if this question has already been posted but i couldn't find any info on it.
its not the phone. The problem is from the way you are converting it. Try a different program and see if that helps.

Have you played them on a PC to see what they look like?
What software are you using to create the videos?
What source are you using? (avi, wma, etc.)
Where is the source material coming from?
If they are out of sync on another device/computer, then it rules out the phone.
yeah I have, the play fine on my windows media player. I downloaded them via torrent and they play fine on my laptop. They are .AVI files and I already trouble shooted them all on my phone. They all seem to do the same thing. windows media player plays them just fine. My atrix plays them too but the sound doesnt go in sync with the actors voices.
I really dont think its the phone, I just think its the software in the phone that is causing it. I have tried other players on android market and they do the same thing.
I did not convert the files to mp4 or mkv files. Im thinking that this is the issue. Its just a drag to convert them since it takes so long to do the conversion.

[Q] HDMI video great! but no sound?

I know a lot of you are thinking this has been addressed before but my problem isn't getting the video to play in entertainment center mode but the audio.....
But the thing is that it will only play sound in video's i recorded with my camera.
What im trying to do is play videos that i have taken from my computer and put them onto my ext sd card.
So like i say the video is just fine but it will not play back with audio.
Oh and they are avi and mpeg formats
Any ideas guys and gals?
The Tegra 2 seems to have crappy video/audio codec support. The samsung processor in the captivate I had previously played everything I could throw at it.
Thankfully, the T2 is powerful enough to do some software decoding. Try using various video players. I find that MoboPlayer can run all my HD videos so far.
Also, just because a file is .Divx, .AVI, .mkv.... doesn't mean that it will play. As far as I know, there are different encoding formats and levels for each codec. The T2 seems to be okay with any basic file, but none of the highly processed files such as movie mkv's.
If you try download another programe in market you would can see
But we can't do the dane for media center....so the better you can do for now is convert your vĂdeo tio an old codec
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Hmmm what codex is recommended? 3gp or something?

what if i was to flash back to a stock sbf seeing as i'm running gingerblur right now.
would that straighten things out?

did you get any feedback??
I've been using Handbrake and the settings from here:
http://www.knowyourcell.com/motorol...d_transfer_them_to_the_motorola_atrix_4g.html
The only difference is that I like to click the "keep aspect ratio" button in handbrake for the resolution. Tweak as you like, but I've found that if you use the constant quality setting, A/V gets out of sync. Biggest bummer is that I have to encode specifically for the Atrix...can't seem to use my "advanced encoded" videos from my media server. I have taken previously encoded 1080p HD movies back though handbrake with the referenced settings to the Atrix and they play beautifully both in MoboPlayer and the Entertainment Center.

[Q] How to convert .mkv videos and subtitles

I have lots of movies in .mkv format with .srt subtitles.
Can you recommend a free Windows program that can convert these into one package that my S3 can play?

instead of converting you can try using mx video player from market, it has support for all types of subtitles
That's a good idea, and I will probably go with that - however at the moment I'm wanting to show off the features of my new phone to work colleagues, and popup play (although it's a gimmick) seems to impress! So I want to use the standard built in video player for that reason
Any suggestions? Is it even possible to combins .mkv & .srt into one file? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to audiovisual stuff :-D

I tried using that and it seemed to be doing the job ok - (using the associated program MKVExtractGUI) it allows you to select the elements of video/sound/subs you want.
However the H264 file it spat out at the end won't play properly in VLC on my computer - it's jerky, jumping up and down from about 8 frames per second to 25fps and back again, lots of artifacts, and no sound or subtitles (despite me selecting those elements to be included).
If it barely plays in VLC on my laptop I doubt it's going to play on my phone...
Any more ideas?
Have you tried using the stock video player? It plays MKVs and subtitles out the box.
I tried that, that would be ideal - but it didn't play the mkv files i gave it. I'll try a couple of others and report back...
Ok well I've just found the first chink in this phone's armour:
It's very fussy about the .mkv files it will play.
It outright refuses some. Others it will play the video but no audio. Some it will play perfectly, unless you try and activate subtitles under the settings menu, in which case it craps out, freezes, and gives me a "this video cannot be played message." Even if I do manage to get it to play subtitles along with the video and audio, it's well out of sync - like minutes out of sync....

Well if you do have to end up re-encoding your videos, try out Format Factory. It's free and has a ton of options.
I would suggest using MP4 and 'burning in' the subtitles. If you can't understand the the language you might as well have them a part of the video.
Thanks, I'll give that a try

Don't think so. Just a stock TF Prime.
If it's any help, I did use DVD Catalyst 4 to convert my DVD's to my specific device.
Copied a few of those files from my PC to the MicroSD on my tablet and played them.
Like I said. Picture and sound on my Prime is fabulopus (using MX Player).
When I plugged in the mini HDMI cord to an HDMI input on my 42"Vizio, the picture is just as good as on the tablet, but there is no sound.

Hi,
Thank you for using DVD Catalyst,
I'm not sure if MX has settings for it, but make sure that it is set to hardware decoding for both video and audio. Alternatively, if you play the videos using the Gallery or Google Videos app, you should get audio through HDMI just fine.

You're welcome. I'll try both suggestions tonight.
BTW: Your software works great! I've converted 30+ movies over the last few days both from DVDs and previously ripped files.
All are automatically converted to my device requirements. The software places them in my Video folder and it ejects the DVD when complete. As for the previoulsy ripped DVD's; just stack 'em up by dragging and dropping into DVD Catalyst and hit Go. Each one takes about 20-30 minutes.
My desktop is an Asus box with an 8 core AMD processor. Windows 7 of course.
Even still, the software really pushes that chip! Lots of heat coming off the box and the fan kicks in big time.
Thanks again. I'll report back to the thread with results of both suggestions.
Best Regards, Steve
