It is already explained on the thread you just downloaded the franco ROM from.
Here it is:
franciscofranco said:
The zram module creates RAM based block devices: /dev/ramX (X = 0, 1, ...).
Pages written to these disks are compressed and stored in memory itself.
These disks allow very fast I/O and compression provides good amounts of
memory savings.
Basically is for storing swapped pages into compressed memory ram.

Hehe... doktornotor has a point, though!
I've read these forums for 2 weeks before rooting/flashing etc., and the time it takes to create a new thread is the same time it takes to press SEARCH - "zram" and going through a few posts. There's quite a number of explanations, for techy to noob users.

yup ur rite!
well, you just waste the page of this thread by bashing the thread starter,
not all people is good and have been on the android for a long time,
the thread starter will not ask this if he knows the function of zram,
are you guys proof which shows person on xda are rude,
please be guided by the rules on this forum,

now i shame on you guys
this might help,
Creates RAM based block devices: /dev/zramX (X = 0, 1, ...).
Pages written to these disks are compressed and stored in memory
itself. These disks allow very fast I/O and compression provides
good amounts of memory savings.
This is enhancement over existing ramzswap driver which creates
virtual block devices (/dev/ramzswapX) which could be used only
as swap disks.
Now, with the ability to handle any kind of I/O request, zram
devices have lot more use cases:
- /tmp storage
- various caches under /var
- swap disks
- maybe even more!

I flashed zram on my phone but I don't see any differences, performance improvements, free ram? Do I need to do anythiing else?
Can someone explain me as simple as posibile what zram does.
Beside making a sd-ext partition and flash zram do I need to install another application?

Uh. If you are expecting more free RAM from this then you completely missed the bus. zram is using RAM to create a fast compressed swap space. Also, it has nothing to do with ext partitions on your SD card or whatever. Google for Linux swap to get a basic clue on what swapping is.
"If the system happens to need more memory resources or space, inactive pages in physical memory are then moved to the swap space therefore freeing up that physical memory for other uses."
is this something like paging file in windows?
how do I know if zram is working? my sd-ext partition is empty...
I apologize if I bother with my questions but I don't know where or what to search.

Here we go. FIRST OF ALL, this isn't the right section for this. This should be in the Q & A of the Vibrant section...
To answer your questions anyway....
1) Wiping poo poo data and system poopee, with the cache, do get rid of all the bowel movements that your phone has acquired.
2) NO, your Rom wont be deleted in where you've placed in your SD card. HOWEVER, you should create a custom folder in your INTERNAL ORGANS OF YOUR SD CARD and save all your personal files, such as the custom roms, and such. NO FREAKING GUARANTEE that it wont be DELETED or POOPED OUT.
With that said... have a nice freakylicious day...

Download sgs tools and do a hard reset (its under secret codes). It will wipe your internal SD so backup anything you want to keep. It will not delete your rom, just puts it back to the way it was when you first flashed it.

this is the last comment I am going to say in this thread because it isnt the place. But look at the threads there are how many pages and how many threads? I doubt mods read every single page and post. Besides people dont give a damn what authority says they react more to their peers. Also this thread hasnt gotten moved yet... and when posts are *****ing at devs about an ETA or the way they do things it gets annoying. I have no problem leaving people alone but they need to follow the rules.

Franco is not wrong. FIRST, This shouldn't be in development section. Second, its a stupid question.
Optimus one ram is more than enough in all conditions. Maximum ram we need is while too much multi tasking, use of flash, browser using caches for surfing and large downloads.
In all these situations, our ram is more than enough. Many greater phones have even less ram.

One more user who thinks that it's easier to make an account on XDA and ask a question than to USE SEARCH.
Root your phone and install app called move2sd enabler and then choose externel as install space and move all apps to sd card
link2sd
use link2sd
apps2sd
ore apps2sd
not all apps
do not move all apps, some can not function from your sd.

Currently our phones are mostly optimized however with some dalvikvm tweaks we could improve boot times, memory usage, app performance, and even provide better debug tools for app devs. Knowledge is best if you wish to be a dev.
Ill update op as i find/remember good reads. Eventually ill clean this up to make a go to place for general android understanding. So for now a wip.

I have some random off topic weird questions I'm sure they've been asked before. What are the benefits of having internal memory partitioned the way it is on the photon (ext etc)? Why not partition how HTC does it on most of their phones? Last question: why isn't there a way to set the sd-ext as the primary storage on our phones?
Sorry to be off topic, I didn't want to waste a new thread just to ask that.
I work third shift, and use the Xda app(explanation), but I get very little real Dev work time

There seems to be a new "fad" around here. And a very dumb one. Please, PLEASE, do not put "You tell me " as your bug list. Put actual bugs there, so that users know and don't have to search 50 pages of your thread just to figure out if somebody has reported a bug and how many are there.

ok
ahahaha.. no problem bro..
ok
but when they release the rom asap, they haven't even used it themselves...
so its like either they release earlier, not knowing what the bugs are,
or they test it themselves and the rom gets released later.
which would you prefer?
The best solution for this is keeping the rom thread updated with all new information at the first page
Edit: and the other thing that every one hates is unneeded attachment or link (like old release updates or fixes)
just rename the attachment for the rom version like(fix flash for version 2.4) for example
Another important thing would be removing this kind of things from title
"fast", "stable" "beautiful" "great battery life"
only things in title should be
