What would you give up for faster ROM ports? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Now that we have 2nd init running and working well the obvious step now is to start porting ROMs but my question is, who would give up their fingerprint readers and / or webtop functionality in exchange for faster ROM ports from the devs?
These two unique features would obviously require drivers or extra coding to get working, which will put a delay in ports.
Personally I could give up webtop as I don't have a dock of any kind or TV accessable but I do use the fingerprint reader on a daily basis to stop friends seeing my pattern lock code.

EDIT: So the general consensus is that not everyone uses the webtop and would consider the fingerprint reader/entertainment centre to be of greater importance.

Meh I don't care about the fingerprint reader. I don't have anything to hide.

I don't use either!

Fingerprint reader and webtop are novelties. I dont really care if they're there. Same for the front facing camera (but the back one I'd want to keep). Although I use it a bit, I could live without the HDMI port.

Honestly, getting anything out there is the first priority. I think the point is to get roms out that show promise and allow people to feel that work is being done. If there's limited functionality, those who want to contribute will understand and let development move in the direction it needs to go.

I don't card for the fp reader or the webtop however I do use the entertainment center for movies
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I could do without the webtop and entertainment center seeing as I have never used either. I don't use the fingerprint reader since I currently don't lock my phone, but if I were to lock it, the fingerprint reader would be the way I would want to. So having the FP would be nice, but unnecessary. (For me)

I can live w/o webtop but fp scanner is a must. Someone else mentioned front facing cam, I would NEVER give that up!

Webtop can be easily replaced by something else (Laptop, desktop), but the FP bring us the security with most convenience, it would be great to have it on ported ROM.

I agree here. I have become used to the fingerprint reader, and am very happy with it. The phone now feels strange if I do not have this enabled. I also want the front camera.
I am happy to wait for something which has actually been thought out and done properly, not "rushed to market" so to speak just so people can say they have a new ROM on an Atrix.

Those are the big downsides I was thinking about whenever I dreamt about custom ROMs.
I too could go without the Webtop as well as the Fingerprint scanner. Front cam would suck, and it REALLY sucks when the main cam isn't available either. I would hold off until there's a build stable enough to run as a daily driver.

I'm not necessarily worried about keeping the webtop, but I think HDMI functionality is a must...most other phones with custom ROMs still enable HDMI, so there's no excuse ours shouldn't. Hopefully we can get a better HDMI mirroring app out of it. And as long as their is a front camera on the phone, it better not be useless.
As for the fingerprint scanner, well...if it makes the lock button on the back at the stupid angle on the phone, it better have some damn purpose as a fingerprint scanner. I hate the position of that button and I like the scanner as the easiest and safest method of lock security, so I really hope it can work out on a custom ROM.

Webtop is definitely a plus for me. I use my Lapdock in a regular basis, so I wouldn't like to lose this feature. If they came up with something new to use with the Lapdock, I'd definitely give up on it. But so far, I wouldn't install any ROM if it didn't have the webtop app in it.

Personally, I would prefer giving up the fingerprint reader over the webtop, but would give that up too if we got a decent HDMI mirroring experience like the DX2. Front facing cam is only a must once we get Talk with video. Either way, couldn't at least some of these things be added into later versions of any of the ROMs, so we wouldn't have to go without them forever?

I could give up everything for a couple weeks for a rough port of CM7, like no working camera, some force closing, stable enough to last as a phone really. I just want to see CM7 running on my Atrix, don't care how bad it's running. I want to see a start.

I'm feeling the same as you actually, I want to see even an alpha proof of concept type build of CM7 or MIUI just to see iuno, progress I guess. :S I know this could come off as demanding and so I hope it's not taken to be this way.
I assume one of the main reasons the devs keep quiet is because their threads keep skewing off-topic to the point where it's impossible to find anything..
anyone else willing to give up features for an earlier build of a true custom ROM?

What do you want in a new Rom?

I am wondering what functions or configurations you are wanting or expecting in a new Rom.
3.2 honeycomb.....
just kidding, but seriously I'm sure we all have a long list of wishes.
Most of which will never happen.
true, I know we all wish for much newer roms, myself included.

Something new other than just kernel, all available rom are having only kernel.
If only kernel is to be there for rom then one shift only release kernel
Sorry if any1 hurted , didn't ment to but that's true

I wrote it some days ago (was it yesterday?)...apart from my dream of a fully working gingerbread or honeycomb (that would be heaven^^) ROM, I think a fully working MIUI ROM / MIUI like Android overlay would be a good thing! I really miss the functions and the good looking menues...
EDIT: Ah, I miss the DSP Manager, too. I don´t dare to install it on my device...
From my perspective, I'm happy with Froyo as it is on the Streak. I wouldn't mind having a Gingerbread ROM, but I don't like the direction that the UI is taking within Honeycomb and really, darker themes use more battery on LCD screens (like the Streak) and less battery on AMOLED.
I just got my Streak back from a near-death experience after accidentally flashing the wrong package and totally destroying my ability to enter recovery in any way, so maybe I'm feeling even more grateful to have Froyo than I might otherwise!

I want dell to "git" their act together.....
Streak ROM dreams
1. ability to use the streak as a bluetooth input/output device on pc/ps3/htpc/etc as a keyboard, mousepad (maybe even airmouse using g sensors), game controller, microphone, speaker, camera, barcode scanner, gps dongle, etc etc. basically allow you to use streaks abilities and features thru bluetooth. I know theres apps doing some of this but to have this kind of bluetooth functions integrated into a ROM without having to mess around would be awesome.
2. a virtual windows machine emulator so I can run SOMETHING in windows on it. OK, this is really really far fetched but hey
Actually all I really want here is to play online poker on the streak and sites like pokerstars, 888poker, partypoker don't have android clients. Fulltilt poker HAD Rush Poker on android but Fulltilt is gone now.

[Q] Rom selection

Hi all
I hope you can help me with this. I have just bought an Atrix and need a little advice.
This is now my third Moto Android phone. I had a Dext (Cliq), and currently have a Defy. After a few ROMs I settled on MIUI, which I love. Unfortunately I notice this is not yet available for the Atrix, so I will need to select another ROM to use.
I would go straight for CM7, as this is my second choice ROM anyway, but it doesn't support the fingerprint scanner. I don't know if I will actually use this, but it's a new toy I don't want to loose
Can anyone suggest a ROM which would suit me? I don't want Blur (used to love it but I've found phones run so much better without), but I would like to have the fingerprint scanner working, and preferably the Webtop (I'm going to look at getting a lapdock when I can afford it).
Thanks in advance
Mouse
I like Alien4 until CM7 gets fingerprint support.
Looks good, although I would prefer no blur.
Is it possible to de-blur? Like I said, I have found in the past it just slows everything down and eats battery, and I have found better replacements for everything it does.

Alien is partially de-blurred.
Fingerprint and webtop are blue-based. So until cm7 gets fp, you have to choose between not having blur and having fp/webtop

I love the Aura rom! or if you want a little more oomph there is darkside (based on aura) Aura has amazing battery life and I wasn't really into alien for some reason. I would try them both, but I want to fond of the alien :/

You have the option of skipping the Blur setup and then freezing Blur, thats what I did. I have no Blur, but I have fingerprint scanner, no need to choose between them.
I'm using CHERRYpi until CM7 gets the kinks worked out with the FP reader and webtop. I switched over to the Motorola ATRIX from a HTC KAISER and wasn't to taken by motoBLUR myself and can't find a faster or easier way to unlock my phone than the built in fingerprint reader (have corporate sync and phone always wants to lock itself). Not exactly sure how CHERRYpi does it versus CHERRYblur, but I only saw the original home page with 7 screens once shortly after flashing the ROM, and logging in/loading my accounts and contacts. Using the red CHERRYpi crust and have been very happy with it. Guess Blur is frozen in the background somehow to allow use of all features. Haven't tried webtop yet as I haven't got a multimedia docking station to hook my phone up to my big screen projector
Maybe worth a try for you, I've been fairly pleased with battery life, too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189497&highlight=CHERRY
I'm running Aura which comes in 3 flavors (De-Blurred, Blurred, and Accounts) De-Blurred is stock android with a tonne of tweaks and such. Accounts is still de-blurred but supports the Blur Accounts (it's what I use), and then Blurred is a fully blurred rom.
There is also Homebase, the newer of which are all de-blurred.
Looks like there's a lot of choice! Think I'm just going to have to pick a couple to try out, and see what I like. With a bit of luck I won't be waiting too long for CM, there are vids of the FP scanner working. MIUI shouldn't be too long after that.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Personally, I think Aura and The DarkSide are the 2 best ROM's for the Atrix. DS is based off of Aura, but it's a themed ROM, which is pretty cool, IMO. Aura has 3 separate versions: Blurred, Accounts, and De-Blurred. "Blurred" has all of the Blur stuff still in it, just a stripped down version; "Accounts" has the Blur removed, but still allows you to access all of the stuff that's involved with "accounts;" and "De-Blurred" is just that, all the Blur/bloatware removed.
I currently am using DS 2.5.1, but I find myself constantly switching between the two as they are both that good. If you want most of the original features, I would go with either of those two. CM7 has a lot of issues with features not working. Also, the developers for CM7 don't really update it much, supposedly.
I tried the Alien ROM, but it just wasn't as good as DS or Aura. Aura seems to get some of the best battery life out of all the ROM's I've tried (Aura, DarkSide, Alien, and Homebase). DS is within a close 2nd, I would say. Hopefully that helps somewhat.

[Q] Camera on ViperRez 1.03

I would have liked to just post this in the ViperRez thread, but I guess the rules dictate I must ask it here. I'm running ViperRez 1.03 and I absolutely love it. However, after searching the thread, and trying a couple fixes, I am still getting the issue with the camera not functioning. You go to take a picture and it seems like it fails to auto-focus and then just boots you back to your homescreen. No FC error or anything. It's seemingly random, and quite frustrating. My questions is whether or not there has been a definitive fix to this problem or not. And if not, does anyone have any recommendations for a good quality camera app to replace stock?
Disable auto focus and face detection that should help

Fix works for camera, but not for video
Turning off auto focus and face recognition works for the camera, but the video function still closes back to the home screen. Any suggestions on how to fix that are most welcome.

Thanks for the tip. I don't mean to be negative, however I still don't get 100% functionality from doing this. I took 5 pictures just now and on the 6th it did it. And not to mention, with auto-focus turned off, 3 of those 5 are extremely blurry. Is this bug an issue with the rom and the hardware or just a bug with the camera app? Could using a different camera app from the market help? I absolutely love this ROM but its looking like I'm going to downgrade my entire user experience and use a sense 3.6 rom. It seems like it should be such an easy fix, I'm used to much bigger hurdles on much harder phones to dev for.
I don't mean to come across as entitled, I'm just confused really. I came from the Bionic and the Droid X, both of which had locked bootloaders, yet the development for those phones seemed to go much smoother. Seems like with this phone, only sense 3.6 roms are stable. Everything else seems to be spotty at best. I'd be happy if AOSP worked correctly, I don't really NEED sense. AOSP roms have more issues than the camera.

Try swapping your storage partition default on the camera app. It shouldn't be doing that, mine's been working great for months and I take a lot of pictures.
Mine started acting up as well after a few days of use. I ended up just reflashing the rom to fix it and so far so good. Next time I might just try flashing the kernel alone and see what happens. I have a feeling its a rom issue though since im on vinylfreaks kernel and not the stock one, ( runs cooler with it).
I also wish there was just a way to reflash the camera app. I might try extracting the rom zip file also next time but it happened to me out on the road and I needed the camera working so couldnt do much troubleshooting
edit:
found this post, seems like the same problem. He used titanium backup to wipe camera app data. check the link below

[Q] Motorola ATRIX 4g mb860 at&t would like Snapseed but not compatible

Hello people, I am unrooted and have enjoyed my ATRIX 4g even though I have been stuck with the final ginger bread ota release at&t gave us and have waited patiently for the promised ota ICS upgrade which they now posted we will not get, I am aware that there is a Leak Test ICS that is buggy, and have been mods made or provided over here by your awesome developers bringing our devices up to JB level even, but am a fan of the functioning camera and finger print biometrics personally. I am a noob as far as Android rooting but very tech savvy and with devices and software in general, every app I have wanted to use has been great on this phone regardless of what version it was made for until today... I am quite into photo editing and have a ton of photo edit apps and engage in IG a bit, we as the underdogs over at IG were always fighting to make our tweaks and edits look as good as an Iphone edit mainly because they had an app called Snapseed, I was very pleased. When I read google had purchased this app drom NIK software a month ago and today it was finally released for Android, I went to Google Play and it for the first time ever said this app is not compatible with your device, it needs 4.0 or above in other words ICS, now my main question here is if I did root flash a mod similar to ICS or the unstable leak version will Google play still just see the signature of my phone and not allow a download or if I was running a new os would it get around that issue, I did also write the developer but doubt they are too concerned about making the app backward compatible as Google also purchased Motorola and offer a mere $100.00 towards upgrading to a different moto phone and I love this ine and do not have the money at the noment to do so.. any advice would be greatly appteciated, as to a a suitable os and whether or not it would even allow us Atrix 4g users to download Snapseed if our phone is recognized by its name and autodetection by googlr play tegardlrss of os, I mean it's a fast phone I've had no problems, everything works, dual core, good ram, speed stirage etc.. thanks Stu
Shows up fine on EPinter's CM10. Market just checks what version of Android your device is using. I haven't installed it to check, but will be doing so shortly. I'll get back to you about how it fairs on our devices.
Edit: After about 10 mins of playing around, it's running pretty well. No noticeable lag whatsoever. Kinda regret paying for PicSay Pro since this one seems to have a simpler UI.

Thanks very much sir, I will now have to look into this EPinter's CM10 and learn the whole process and hopefully not brick my phone, I'm good with directions, does the CM10 have a working camera and fingerprint scanner, and can I save my whole phone image if it all went south? I also paid for PicSayPro and many others too, love graphic arts and photography so the cam although only 5mp is important at times.
Anyway thanks very much yet again for the info.
No problem. Yes, you should make a nandroid backup once you have a custom recovery. It is one of the recommended steps followed by an exclamation mark. =P The only thing lacking on EPinter's CM10 is video camera (related to missing HWA due to improper kernel source) Regular camera works fine for still shots. I use camera fx & camera 360, both work without any issues. And No, the fingerprint scanner doesn't work since it's not a part of CM source.
There is an unofficial, "official" ICS (ICSROM & ATRICS) that has proper HWA with video camera and fingerprint scanner but the battery life is terrible and the phone gets really hot. I personally had random restarts every few minutes.EPinter's CM10 does well as a daily driver, but if you're going to go through the trouble, might as well try all the roms available! =D

Thanks very much for this info, I will research these downloads, I watched a youtube vid of cm10 and looked good, seems the Atrix is a bit more of a pain to work with than other Androids but will look into the whole process of unlocking and fastboots and the nanandroid back up etc.
Greatly appreciate the help.

Yes, the Atrix is a pain compared others, but once rooted with a custom recovery (IMHO RomRacer's custom CWM 5.0.2.7 is the best, never had issues) it's just like any other device. Heck, I remember flashing 3-4 ROMs a day, it was insane! =P
I would recommend downloading Titanium Backup from the market as well. It will help you quickly backup your most used apps w/ data/settings and reinstall them after installing a new ROM. Good luck and have fun.
P.S. Thanks for Snapseed!

Question Is the Xperia 5 IV worth it, even after root?

Right now I'm struggling really hard to find a new phone I want, and realistically none meet my standards due to low battery, or bad camera specs and software support. However I keep finding myself wanting the Xperia line of phones, and I strangely really want to get this phone but I hear and know of many cons already. Heating issues, and in a year or two it's going to lose software support right?
However would rooting it, or people who have rooted the phone solve the issues regarding the phone themselves? Like was the os optimized better for thermals, or is there a good line of custom roms that can securely update the phone that way instead? Was it worth it to go through the hassle, or is bricking a strong issue and unable to be dealt with.
Cuz honestly I just want a decent phone of 5000MAH, great camera, and good dual speakers tbh. It'd be cool if it'd come with a headphone jack too, and if micro sd was an option but honestly I only use about 80gb of storage anyway.

ShatteredSpider exactly this! I've done all that and tbh so far (4 months), have not an issue to shout about. Perhaps its by removing the bloat, thoough very little compared to some phones, having a rooted ad-blocker makes my phone run flawlessly so far without no crazy heat issues. Of course there have been some official updates, mostly security but they may have tinkered around with the initial heating issue too. Battery life is great, magisk+modules run perfectly and banking apps work fine too. So far, my best and easiest rooted phone experience so far with some great cameras/software, plus I've got Gcam/revanced running too as a plus. New phone sensor does sound great, not sure I need to jump to it, especially as gcam night images work pretty well for me and even for general snappy images.
@davestuarts Was there anything root-related that you had to do to get GCam working properly? I had a hard time with it initially though it did take pictures and then it stopped working entirely, possibly due to a system update.

I don't think Gcam technically requires root, there's nothing I can remember that suggests it, as I remember testing Gcam when I first had the phone and was untouche/not rooted.
I've had Gcam 8.1 installed since (with a profile) and it's been running fine, mostly photos and occasionally videos.
I've updated the rom about three times, though manually as it's rooted, but Gcam continues to work. I've tested other versions of Gcam but they either didn't work or crashed. That's all I can say. Any further questions, I'll try and answer if I know.

Oooo please send what kind of photos you take on the phone, i wanna see the quality!! To me it seems like the perfect mid tier phone, but I wanted to see the stock photos, pro photos and possible gcam but haven't reliably seen results only a few reviews. I also wanna try to work it into being a professional webcam when I'm home for motion tracking but afraid of bad quality?
