Which do you prefer? And why?
I wanna know what y'all use.
I use GO SMS Pro 'cus it is a lot faster than Handcent, but there seems to be a limit to the number of characters you can enter in a text message.
Handcent lags a lot for me. It also delays the notifications by about 10 seconds. Though it doesn't have a limit to the number of characters that can be entered in a text message.
I'd also like to know if there's a way to remove the lag from Handcent... does anyone else have the issue..?
And.. is it possible to remove the maximum characters limit in GO SMS Pro..??
Thank You.

Same problem with Handcent for me - lags like hell. I'm using Go SMS Pro now. It's very fast and i like the amount of things you can adjust. In combination with Smart Keyboard Pro it's the most comfortable messaging set up.
Go sms pro is better in terms of speed and functionality. So I prefer it over stock sms and other sms applications.
As for the character limit problem..... actually the limit for a single sms is 160 characters..... the limit is universal.... go sms just shows this and handcent dosen't.... it is infact a nice feature for people who don't have free messaging and want to see how many sms they are sending.

@anant I am not talking about the limit of 160 characters per SMS. I mean the limit that exists while composing a message in GO SMS Pro. Try copying and pasting a really long article from your browser & you'll know. Handcent doesn't have any limit regarding that.
I like to send real long text messages.

Same for me. Go sms pro + smart kayboard pro
i will definitely go for Go Sms Pro.
Just a week ago, my phone unable receive any sms. but i insert the same sim card in another phone, it does receive sms. i tried factory reset but the same problem existed. then someone suggested me use Go Sms Pro, this problem solved automatically.
regards your query, i think you can try this:
1. at inbox, press menu button and then select settings
2. select "send settings"
3. then check the "split large messages" box
your long message will be sent in mutiple messages.
Hope this can help you!
go sms pro.. the earlier version of handcent was good, but after some upgrade its become very slow and laggy..
Go sms is fast with >200 sms too

Everyone seems to be missing my point.
What I am saying is, there seems to be a limit in the number of characters(or alphabets) that can be entered in textbox while composing a text message. Whenever I copy and paste a long article(I mean about 33 SMSes long), I cannot type or enter anything beyond that.
Handcent does not have that limit. :-\

No offense, but why do you send so long messages as SMS? This is a total abuse of the technology. I am sure that you could send these in email, or you can simply send a link to that article.

Yea. You are right. But that is not always possible, you know. Not "all" of my friends use a phone capable of receiving E-Mails, neither do they have access to the net on their phone.
Plus, I find sending an SMS a much easier way to communicate.

Exactly.... sms is more easily than email accessible and can be received by anyone who has a phone...... be it the very old black and white ones or the latest galaxy s2!

Darn. There is a 160 character limit in Go SMS Pro? I'm tired of Handcent and was actually planning to shift over to Go SMS. I guess I'll have to put up with it for some more time
The lag is just unbearable at times :|

don't worry man..... use go sms it's better......
and as for the limit that is the limit for a single sms...... one single message cannot be more than 160 characters...... it applies for handscent also.... in go sms it is displayed that's it it makes no difference whatsoever actually!

I just installed GO SMS Pro and it works great but the problem is that of multiple incoming text message notifications. The stock messaging application as well as GO SMS notify so I disable the notifications of stock application but on the lock screen it displays number of unread messages though the messages are read already. The stock messaging application doesn't recognize that the messages have been already read using the GO Sms Pro. How do i disable it? I mean the stock messaging application and its lock screen unread message count notification?
Go to the stock messaging app, settings and disable "automatically read messages" or something like that.

It is called auto-retrieve... seriously, did you take any time to really look at the options instead of forcing others to switch the language of their phone to English?

Probably only temporary... the only real fix would be to uninstall the stock app which will likely screw your MMS (in case you are using it). (There is some Go SMS beta for testing here @ XDA with more complete MMS functionality in case you are interested.)

As said in the quoted message. (And frankly not worth wasting the time, given how useless the lock screen is.)
Auto-retrieve is associated with MMS got nothing to do with the unread TEXT message notifications

Well, as said, it worked here, otherwise I would not mention it. Let us just abandon this topic since obviously there is no solution beyond the mentioned one which involves uninstalling the stock app. (Or installing a ROM with a useful lock screen.)
Install both handcent and go sms... only keep the notifications of go sms.. thts it u dont get any sms notifications on your lockscreen.!!
use only handcent sms instead of go sms pro. this solved my sms count problem on the lock screen
Every time I read someone's text regardless of if i respond or not, when I go back to the inbox it still has the "1" bubble on that thread showing I have one new msg when i don't. Anyone know a fix?

Sometimes this happens when you try to send at the same time a message is being received. That could be your issue.
Yep mine do that too sometimes... If I go back in it normally fixes it. Seems to happen when I go to the text through the notification bar.

Try using Handcent instead. I was having the same problem and decided to use Handcent and turn off the stock messaging app. My experience is that the stock app is glitchy.
Sent from my 3VO using XDA Premium App
Seems to happen if you are using the notification bar or widget. Going directly to the messages does not exhibit the problem... at least for me.
My stock messaging app too seems a bit slow to update the unread count. This applies to the actual messaging app as well as the widget.
i can be in the app, read and reply, back out to the main level that shows all messages, and it will show the message as unread even though i replied to it.
Definately odd. I can get rid of it by going into the message, then scrolling down.
Thanks guys I wasn't sure if it was just my phone or all. Sounds like all. I like the sense 3.0 messaging app enough though to just deal with it, I don't like handcent.

Could you please inform how many text messages are currently in your largest conversation?
I only use Handcent for my text messaging, but my Razr Maxx still keeps deleting the texts and calling each conversation at 1,000.
I'm going to post another thread, and I hope I can spark enough interest to get rid of this annoying limit. I actually need all my text messages on hand. I sell phones, and I can't stress how important my text messages are to the business.
EDIT : How can I get better exposure with this request? I would very much like to have this fixed. I'm willing to pay to have a solution. I use Handcent, and I need more than 1,000 texts per conversation. I didn't want to repeat this post.
A fix for this would be nice!
Do you think we should create a thread in another subject heading? I believe this is a reoccurring theme with a lot of the newer devices. I have seen that this is on the Droid 4, and it is not only on the Droid Razr Maxx.

That's crazy! What device are you currently using? What ROM?
I'm currently using an ICS leak Droid RAZR Maxx and all natural, except for the root. ICS is definitely not the culprit, as it was doing the same thing in GB. I'm also using Handcent with the delete old messages unchecked. I took a screenshot.

Hi guys!
1000 text message limit is a Razr Blur feature
"For anyone else who wants to get rid of the 1000 messages cap:
(DOING THIS MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY OR POSSIBLY BRICK YOUR PHONE)
1. Root Phone
2. Download/Install a Different SMS(texting) app from the Google Store
I chose to use the 'Handcent SMS' app
3. Download a Root Uninstaller
I used 'Root Uninstaller Free'
4. Uninstall the stock SMS app, it's called 'Messaging.apk' I my system/app. (info added)
5. Profit!!! Just remember to check the setting in your new SMS app for any limit. In Handcent you can turn off any limit or have it save upto 5000 texts and then start deleting old ones."
The above tip was posted here.
I would recomment rename the default Messaging.apk instead deleting it.
Do at your own risk.
Cheers

I have read a few threads containing this idea, but I haven't had the intended results. I actually stopped receiving picture messages when I froze the default messaging app. If freezing doesn't work, then deleting would not have any better results, right?
yeah, i just disabled notifications from the stock app.
but i also did this on my sgs4g, and hd2.
i am using j.ydaddy's gsm patched gummy rom.
so ICS with GB kernel.

Why don't you use a SMS backup tool, which backup text messages to your Gmail account ?
I use SMS Backup + which let me backup SMS (text) MMS and Call log into my Gmail with corresponding labels.
I always have my text ect. with the searchable features Gmail provides
I recently decided enough with Apple/the iphone and so far I am absolutely loving my S3 and android in general. My only major issue is group messaging within the stock messages app.
With the iPhone it would show me in a group text who messages are also sent to and allow me to reply to all within the group.
Is there a particular setting to allow this on the S3 messaging app? I really like the look/theme of the app and would love this functionality. I do realize there are 3rd party messaging apps out there but I wasn't sure if I was missing anything.
Thanks.
It's not possible with the stock sms app, or even the samsung sms app. You need a 3rd party app like GoSMS Pro, or Handcent. There is a setting in each which enables it.
What it does is it combines the MMS's for you when they come in....so at first they come in as "download"...after they download, they go into the correct thread.
Yes it is just add multiple recipients and then send.

Yea, but when the message comes back, it doesn't group the recipients back (if your recipient replied to all). Don't see a way to reply to all either...in the case that someone sends you a group text.

You can group people together. You can select a group(s) to have your message sent to. If your friends have only one phone number in your contacts it won't ask which one to use, and unfortunately it doesn't remember which ones you picked the next time you start a new conversation (it does remember in the thread). Unless they can reply to all, the responding messages show up as a new thread.
Perhaps you can do this with the ATT MyMsgs app, I don't know.

I heard that the ATT Messages app supports group texting, but you can't initiate a group text...very odd if its true.
Stupid t-mobile always fails to send SMS longer than your standard 160 chars or whatever. If I have it split into two, the person sometimes gets neither, and sometimes only gets the second half. So, confusing. Standard/stock app works fine, as it has an option to auto convert to MMS once it gets so long. So the short of it is, I want a 3rd party texting app, that doesn't suck, and that converts to MMS rather than splits.
Things that would make me happy.
1. It being pretty.
2. It having working group MMS
3. And, as I said, it MUST have an option to convert to MMS.
Don't suggest Textra or ChompSMS. Both just split. Neither auto convert. I own Chomp and I've used Textra extensively.
Edit: and on my 2% remaining battery I downloaded Go SMS Pro and it doesn't appear to have an auto convert option.. only split

Sync your SMS messages with facebook messenger app . this app dosent split the SMS
