Hi,
I've grown to love swype quite alot........(in portrait mode). Swype is probably the fastest keyboard in portrait, but doesnt really compare to any of the others in landscape.
Is it possible to create a mod which allows you set different keyboards for portrait and landscape mode? Like Swype in portrait, and Android keboard in landscape.
Just an idea for anyone willing to try. Thanks for your time.
Android security doesn't allow apps to change the keyboard, so you would have to mod the os at a low level to make it possible.

The n1 has aosp and cyanogen releases, we don't. The security code is pretty deep in the framework, we really need a build from source for something like this. And we have to be careful. Malware that can hijack the keyboard could steal all sorts of stuff.
O I understand

aww, thanks anyway. How about if we just make a brand new keyboard which is a combination of swype and samsung.
Feel free to release your hate for touchwiz, i know we can use other apps to "fix" our phones but there's not an easy solution for everythin, gwhat are the things that you hate the most about it? In my opinion:
1.The lockscreen: Even tough i like the slider for received sms or missed calls i find it ridiculous, its slow and unpractical, you have to drag the wallpaper through 70% to unlock the phone
2.The launcher: its not that bad, but it is NOT smooth while flicking through the homescreens
3.The cheesy blue font, really samsung? a blue font in menus?
4.The messaging app: again the blue font, and the app it's just an iphone ripoff
5.The dialer/contacts: looks ugly and the image for the contacts its streched :/
6. Autobrightness also in the browser? huh? why?
7. Gallery on drugs? Its all sped up and is not overly responsive
8. No "," on the keyboard ( you have to switch to the special characters)
9. No option to deactivate just the keyboard vibration, in order to do it you must deactivate the vibration on the capacitive buttons too
10. Icons are really ugly
11. Hubs are pointless, the only non disposable one is the game hub
12. Samsung apps are horrendous, has someone download something useful from there?
13. No music widget? um why? i know there's a "shortcut" on the notification but a widget would have been nice
14. No text reflow on the browser
I should also mention that the camera app is better than stock android and i also like the way you change the wallpaper and add widgets, the browser is really smooth , is it true it has hardware
acceleration?
I know gingerbread is fugly but starting from ice cream sandwich just stick to making amazing hardware samsung
1. Normal Android and iOS, you have to drag an a thumb size **** for entire screen rather than anywhere of the screen, seems more hard to me.
2. Same on all androids... Try HTC next time.
3. Where did you get blue fonts? I don't see them
8. *cough* I have "." on keyboard. Do you by any chance use another launcher?
14. Actually text reflows on mine, and it is not TW launcher, it is android
Seriously dude, rest are just "objective" rather than facts.
I like TW and it is lighter than any other "default" launchers on rest of Android devices. Even sense on my friend's HTC's feels slow.
I hope Samsung does not give us butt-naked Android UI for ICS... TW4 is next best thing in Android other than core underground.
Please read why rest of Tech-editor hates Android's UI's, since I did not see much using SGS2... Beside it is not like Samsung locked you to use it. There are too many launchers out there...
I think TW is a good solid launcher. I dont use TW daily, but i dont agree with 90% of your points.
Same as the above poster really. i dont have blue fonts and also have a "." on the keyboard.
I'd strongly have to disagree with the not smooth on the home screens. Mine is seriously nippy.
Probably the only reason i dont use it is that i like to change my icons, so i will give you that one.
The stretching in the dial can be fixed by using a picture with the correct resoultion.

Touch wiz is too good to be criticised. Okay, some glitches but then nothing is perfect. It's so light and IMO it is awesome.

Doesn't work at all for me, at least not the free version.
The deleted apps leaving holes in the app tray bugs me too.

I agree 100% with everything! But you forgot the most annoying thing of all. The king of all annoyances! The child of Annoying Orange and Fred! The 100% battery charge notification!!! Who in their right mind would not think of including an option to turn it off?!
In all fairness, most of these issues (including the ball on leg on a hot summer's day battery notification) can be solved through different apps. But why should I?
edit: forgot to add that there is no stock android music widget (or any at all) in the widget list
i just love touchwiz no complains

1. Is it SO hard to move your finger two centimeters on any direction? Try other phones (HTC, Nexus).
2. Yes, it's quite good for most people. I don't really like it and i use Adw Launcher Ex. There's a lot free alternatives too.
3. What's wrong with these fonts? Are you aware of "Themes" section on this forum?
4. Yes, i totally agree on that one. It's an ifone rip off. On older ROMs at least we had an option to change theme, now it's gone. The only thing that really bugs me so much.
5. Pictures are fine for me and dialer app too. Would love to have an option to jump straight into favorites, instead of all contacts, though.
6. Yes and i love it! BTW, you can click "Menu" and disable it in no time.
7. That's slightly modded stock Android gallery and it's performance depends on amount of media files you have. Also, i guess you have some cheap class 2 SD card. And again, you can use QuickPic from Market, it's free and very fast.
8. I guess you meant "," not "." Yes, that's why i use Gingerbread Keyboard. Again, free on Market.
9. There's is an option to deactivate vibration for keyboard only. Settings - Language and keyboard - Samsung keyboard.
10. Personaly i love every single of them. Again, you can change any icon on this phone the way YOU like. It's Android
11-13 BS. Don't like them - don't use. Simple as that. And try some HTC phone and you will be surprised to find about 20 times more of bloatware.
14. Open browser - settings - auto-fit pages.
As i can see, you don't like every single bit on this phone. Why did you buy it? There's a good bunch of other phones.
And one tip: learn to use your phone, before blaming Samsung
I agree with some of your points, OP.
But the BIGGEST thing (at least in my experience) was how crappy Touchwiz performed compared to AOSP. Again, this is at least in my experience.
I hear good things about TW4 though.... I hope it's true!

Sorry, but I'm not seeing anything other than opinion. The vast majority of people actually really like TW on the S2, rating it higher than the other launchers. As for Sense, that's just another Launcher. You may as well start a thread for your favourite word processor, stating how it's better than the others, and then one explaining why you really like a certain art package or database app.
So you prefer Sense to TW. You should have a HTC phone then, not a Samsung one.
Ok, so I know this is a hugely personal thing, but, will you keep Touchwiz or use a custom launcher?
Personally, I don't like the look of Touchwiz at all. With that in mind one of the great ICS launchers (Nova and Apex) should seem like an easy decision!?
The thing is I am not sure how many of the new features you may lose out on by giving up on Touchwiz... will features like SmartAlert and SmartStay still work?

I as well will be changing the launcher. Yes, your extra Touchwiz like features will remain (ie SmartStay, SmartAlert, and the redesigned apps such messaging and the settings and the drop down notification shade) as those are baked into the firmware. The only you thing you might (and probably WILL) be losing are your Touchwiz widgets and from past experience with them that's not a deal breaker at all.
I will say one thing as someone who's deciding between the HOX and the SGSIII that I'm a bit disappointed that Touchwiz hasn't matured quite the same way that Sense has. Sense just plain looks nicer and you can clearly see the ICS undertones. I feel like ICS has been buried beneath Touchwiz. And I don't like that :-(

none. unless he means the theme itself.
I used a custom launcher on my S2. However looking at Touchwiz on the S3, I quite like it. It looks alot nicer.
I`ll probably keep it until I want more options and theming.

I think that's exactly it. I am judging it before I have had time with it. My new approach will be to keep it until I don't like it!
Depends on two factors:
1. How good the tw widgets are (some of them are good!)
2. Whether I need more ram (tw is a memory hog), and whether tw is butter smooth (I'm guessing this iteration is!).

Likewise. TW will be the very first thing I change when setting up my phone and will be replaced with Go Launcher EX lol
If the phone shows zero signs of lag - I will likely keep the stock launcher. Just rooted to ditch bloat apps.
touch wiz launcher is just a part of all the software customizations packed. if you replace the laucher you will still have the rest of touch wiz package like music player, radio etc etc

I'm not sure why, but something tells me our phone is meant to be used in landscape mode. I want to give it a try, but not sure what the best way to go about it is. I am rooted and currently running HYFR OnlyOne rom. Great rom and I love the S3 add ons. But I have seen the hybrid rom has a tablet mode which looks like it would make landscape use much easier. But does it maintain the goodies like S-Memo and the use of the S-pen? Would it be a good idea just to use another launcher, like Go or maybe VTL, as it seems pretty landscape oriented?
I would prefer to be able to do it and maintain all the usability of the phone. Any suggestions?
The most basic way to add landscape functionality is with a new launcher. I use apex which allows me to landscape it and allows for additional icons on home screen, dock etc through its options menu. As far as I'm aware hybrid offers tablet support with s pen functionality. The only ones who don't are the aokp and cm9 ROMS. If you want full tablet & s pen support then hybrid is the way to go

I am currently using The Hybrid RCVI and you still retain everything, everything, everything. The only difference is you flash an additional zip which contains the 4.0 ics apps (gmail, calendar, phone, messaging etc) because the stock touchwiz ones don't work with such a low dpi. But you should try it, it's so amazing. All s-pen functionality still works (double tap for s memo, screenshot, back, menu, home) and s note. Can't go wrong.
Oh my GOSH, i just remembered, hahahaha, you can lock your phone on landscape mode. turn on auto rotation, then turn it to the side so it flips, without rotating turn off the auto rotation and it stays in landscape DD so now you can keep everything you want or your current setup if you like it and just do that. hope it helps.
I actually just started using the phone in landscape only. I use Apex Launcher and lock the launcher in landscape mode. I then use an app called Ultimate Rotation Control which allows for per app orientation control. This allows me to keep the phone locked in landscape while having apps like Phone flip to portrait when I need to dial. I'm however using CM9 in tablet mode because I like the AOSP feel and in my opinion, AOSP tablet mode looks much nicer than TouchWiz tablet mode. You can still use the S-pen as a standard stylus with CM9 but it loses the rest of its functionality. I don't use S-pen features all that much anyway so it's not a huge loss. If you decide to use an AOSP-based rom, there is a port of the basic S memo features that was just posted in the Themes and Apps section which is cool for basic notes/drawing. Like previously stated though, you can use Hybrid to keep the S-pen and TouchWiz things.

I think I will give Hybrid and maybe CM9 a try. Is there more then one CM9 rom?
Also does anyone know if boot manager works with the note? I used to use it on my evo, but a google search didn't return many results for if it works with the note.
Is there a good guide for installing hybrid? The OP seems kind of vague. I don't even see where it mentions having to flash the additional apps. And the part about installing apps to the SD card seems ominous. Any help? Maybe I just missed it. It's late and I am tired, lol

I guess since JB came out TW Launcher edits are more difficult. Found a few threads where people were trying to do something similar but couldn't figure it out. It's possible to edit the grid layout, removing the dock label, and whether or not you want wallpaper scrolling, but couldn't find much on the other stuff. Probably would need a lot of smali code editing.
Very curious: why so adamant about sticking with TW? It's really not that special and besides the TW widgets, it's easy to replicate and typically be better at all the other stuff. It's not like it's more smooth or has many (any?) really special features than one of a dozen other good replacements don't have...
