[Q] Samsung SGH-T959 Network Failure - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Samsung SGH-T959 Will not connect to the T-Mobile GSM network. All other functions appear to work OK. The phone worked well enough until I needed to use it in Britain last week. Until then, it was stock from the store, locked to T-Mobile USA.
I needed connectivity so I unlocked the phone and used it with a Vodaphone (lebaru) pay-as-you-go sim. At first it would not register with the provider, but I gave the phone to the agent (some Arab guy in a small shop...) and after they kept it overnight, it worked. On returning to the US I put the original SIM back in the phone. Now it won't register with T-Mobile. Sometimes it finds ATT towers when I scan for network providers, sometimes it does not. It never sees T-mobile.
I have verified that it is unlocked, and done a hard reboot and washed away the internal Flash storage. The behaviour does not improve. I have tried two known-good SIM cards.
I have read many posts that seem to indicate that others are having similar problems, but I haven't seen any answers (or even explanations).
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Ok, I guess that I'll need to use Heimdal, as I don't have windows. But where do I get a 'stock' image to load? If what I have is not stock, how do I know what it is? And if I come to the point of having to load alternate 'ROMs', which do I choose. There seem to be so many caveats.
What I find really perplexing is my phone's sudden inability to lock to the tower corresponding to the sim provider I'm using. With other phones and modules I have used over the years, this was ever an issue. You put in an ATT sim, the device tries to connect to an ATT tower. You put in T-Mobile or Vodaphone, then it tries to connect to the corresponding resource. It almost seems as if there is a small hidden file somewhere in the bowels of the beast that overrides the sim's preference.

Still trying...
Ok, after much wailing, flailing, and gnashing of teeth, I have sorted out more of the vocabulary of this forum, hopefully attached it correctly to the relevant concepts in my head. I feel that I am making progress of a sort. I have also installed Heimdall under Linux, Odin under Windows, Kies and a variety of minor tools. I have tried them cautiously, but avoided any rash actions. I believe that I will make a unbricking cable for good measure.
But my phone still won't connect to the T-Mobile (US) tower. Scanning for 'networks' only shows ATT, and I'm pretty sure that I can't even talk to that using an ATT sim.
My working theory is based on the events that got me to this point (but still far too little knowledge about my phone) and goes as follows:
When I had the phone unlocked, this was done properly, but my T-Mobile (US) 'MODEM' (which I assume to be the signal processor code that controls the physical layer radio interaction) was not able to negotiate a session properly with the Vodaphone (UK) tower. I took the phone back to the person who unlocked it, and he/she/it realized the problem and updated that part of the code, allowing me to connect with the 'network'.
I never mentioned to the phone-unlocker that I only planned to stay in the UK for 10 days. It didn't occur to me that upon returning home, I might encounter the flip side of this problem. And if he/she/it happened to think of this possibility, he/she/it figured I'd be well out of his/her/whatever hair by the time I noticed. Which I am.
So my operating assumption is that I need to reverse the initial modification of my firmware, restoring the initial functionality to the 'MODEM'. I have yet to find a trove of alternative 'MODEM' code, but responses to queries by others seem to imply that one exists. I am reluctant to attempting to flash the device back to the original state, mostly because I am not sure what that state was. I've downloaded a bunch of stuff (i.e. Odin + .pit files) but I'm nervous about whether they are really the right ones for my phone.
Can anyone tell me if I am on the right track?

You should download the AIO Vibrant Toolbox since it have all the instructions and files you need to revert back to stock. Its pretty easy.

Instead of typing so much, odin back to stock. Man I hate fast typers. /crazy.flailing.arm.tube.man

I'm a *lousy*, hunt & peck typer. Once in a while I just bite the bullet and try to say what I mean unambiguously. It is painful, and I do it only rarely.

Cross Carrier ROM flash?

I have searched this forum and the net and could not get a definative answer. Possibly someone knowledgeable and experienced can answer this question?
Is the “base” OS the same for each CDMA carrier? If so, can you update using a “similar” carrier Rom and then soft rest before it installs the carrier specific add-ons? Example: Flash Alltel ROM to US Cellular 6800.
Thanks!
yes, you can, if you really wanted to. chances are, the customizations will get run at one time or another though. you might not be able to get around it. just remember that you have to unlock your phone first using a hard spl. but yeah, it could be done. is there a specific reason why you want the alltel rom for your USC 6800?
I would also recommend against this, and the reason why is if their carrier customization ever starts, now or down the road, you are screwed. Since USCC has no stock rom, getting the settings back where they belong is a real pain in the ass.
It still voids your warranty just like any custom rom would, so you may as well run one of the custom roms that have more memory, more recent versions of WinMO, and GPS enabled.
All in all, there is never a good reason to flash a carrier rom, unless its your carrier and you are returning it for warranty support. Otherwise the carriers roms are locked down, less memory, their bloatware and less options for you.
BTC
Thank you both for the responses!
The reason behind the question is that my carrier is small (great company) and they don't have the ability to offer/supply upgrades, and HTC refuses to even let me register so I have no avenue for an upgrade to 6.1. My carrier has purchased the 6800's through another carrier and I have not been able to get a solid answer as to what carrier it is based on.
I very much want access to 6.1 and stand alone GPS, not to mention the better BT stack and threaded SMS. I was hoping that I could use a "base" upgrade from a similar carrier and avoid the carrier add-ons during the upgrade with the soft reset. The carrier that supplied the 6800's has been narrowed down to Alltel or US Cellular. Alltel has an upgrade, US Cellular does not. At least not that I can find.
Thank you again!
Your issue will come down to whether you can find a compatible carrier cab then.
Use QPST to back up your phone's programming, and copy down every field in every section of EPST, this will at least give you a base to go back to.
Honestly if you follow the route of the custom roms, use QPST to restore the phone's programming and then fix any EPST differences, your phone should just work. You may have to recreate the dialup connection so that it can still get on the internet, but if it doesn't work, there isn't any going back.
So, you might mention what carrier you have and see if anyone else from the same carrier has had any success. Flying blind is dangerous, usually there will be someone else who is in the same boat that has taken the plunge and can probably assist you in how to do it for your carrier.
BTC
BTC,
Thank you again for the words of wisdom which are points well taken. Unfortunately, I have only found one other person that shares the carrier and the 6800 and he's at the same starting point I am.
We are "comparing" notes now and will hopefully come up with a solution. I have (I believe) downloaded QPST but have not played with it yet. I guess you could say I was being lazy and hoping for an easy option. I guess it's time to jump in the water...
Again, many thanks!
Tim
Here is a decent article that talks about how to use QPST (in a different context, but it at least walks you thru the basics you will need).

I've been in the same situation with a small carrier. Illinois Valley Cellular to be specific. We get our phones from other carriers too. I talked to tech about upgrades, they told me to do whatever works. I'm using an unlocked bootloader with a custom ROM. Thought they did tell me someone did the same with a Sprint stock ROM to get GPS working. I used QPST to back up everything and saw some traces of Cellular South in the programming too!
Thanks to all that responded! I guess I have lots of "studying" to do.

[Q] Problem with cell network

I am admittedly a noob when it comes to Android phones. I have had my i777 for a few months now and have successfully bricked it more than once. Having said that, I have found that the answers to my questions have always been on the board somewhere. I am having troubles figuring out where to go with this portion of the issue though. Having tried several different ROMs for my phone, I keep having the same issue. With any ROM, other than stock, I miss phone calls or text messages when my phone is locked and on Wi-Fi at home. If I'm out and about with my phone in my pocket and locked, it works normally. But, if I'm at home working at my desk and the phone is locked, I will not get text messages or phone calls. Notifications from apps like CNN continue, but nothing from the mobile network. I have followed the guide to return to stock and built my own jig that worked to reset my flash counter as I flashed before I read when I got the phone. (Former iPhone user that just assumed it was as easy as a jailbreak, really really dumb on my part)
I am a tech geek. I follow instructions well. I am sure the problem is with my phone and not the ROMs. My question for the forum, is where to begin troubleshooting the issue. I want to be able to use these ROMs.
Some info that may be helpful:
Baseband: I777UCKH7
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
I have tried the following in no particular order:
UCKK6-SHOstockV1.9.2noWipe
Serendipity_8.2
update-unnamed-v2.2.1-full
ICScrewD_2.1
TurkbeyRom-v33
Each has individual issues that I can deal with and learn to fix, but the phone issue I, obviously, cannot get past.

No I have not. Does the wifi connection prevent the cell network from connecting?
cell network shouldn't disconnect at all if it is, swap it out could be bad phone. Also what is your signal level at your desk at home? Low signal normally causes missing of messages.

No, it doesn't.
Do you use any 3rd party apps like tasker?
When did this issue start? Perhaps there is an issue with the tower that serves your home. How strong is your cellular signal at home? I believe text messages (except MMS) are sent over the cellular network. Your being on wifi shouldn't matter (does being at home with wifi off and the phone locked still cause issues?).
I can't imagine other ROMs causing issues, though. If anything, they would mess up your data network only if they had the wrong APN settings for your area (for example, for a while, people using Unnamed didn't have data issues, except for a few like me who lived in certain areas with Cingular towers). Or maybe the stock modem files are better for you than the ones provided by the ROMs?
Maybe you have an old sim card that somehow has issues? You should be able to get a free one from at&t. Do you have another phone that you can test it with?

I keep a minimum of 3 bars and live near the center of a large city. As stated in the op, this is only happening on added ROMs never on stock. I have again reverted to stock (+root), since the op, and confirm that I am getting messages and calls at my desk at home with the phone locked.
****************************Edit for SoCaliTrojan post********************************************
I do not have any additional task managers installed, I've just always used the one built in. As for the SIM card, I am using the one that I got with the i777 at upgrade and get the 4G network when not on wifi, so I think I can rule it out. My wife has a Note that I have been drooling over, guess I will have to "borrow" it for "testing" when she gets home from work.
Also, I notice I am on baseband KH7 with Android version 2.3.4. I see mention of KK6 and 2.3.6 on the forums. I have avoided flashing the baseband, when possible, to keep from possibly bricking the unit. Is it possible that upgrading these could resolve the issue?
That is a very weird problem. Only thing I can suggest is compare the APN settings in root with a custom rom's settings. They should be identical, but check anyway.

Then it isn't connecting to 4G networks.
It's labeled as "4g" but really just multiple 3g connections to give you a faster overall speed. But you might want to just try getting a new sim card at your AT&T store, if that doesn't work, try a different modem (like KK6) the whole list/downloads are in the development section.

I made AT&T upgrade me to a n LTE sim card. Our phone disent have LTE but the newer sim cards supposedly will make your speeds faster when LTE does come to your area due to it pushing HSPA+ faster than enhanced backhaul.
You said you live in the center of a big city maybe being surrounded by a lot of tall buildings could be causing havoc on your cell reception.I know at my work I can send and receive messages and calls everywhere except our breakroom but everyone else's phone works fine in the breakroom.

Unlocked i717 contantly losing Data/Network

Hey all, I apologize in advance if this is posted somewhere already, I did search for a couple hours and haven't found anything that come close to my situation.
I bought 2 Samsung Galaxy Notes (i717) a couple months ago. With the news of running them on our T-mobile network, I was sold. Both devices were brand new, in the box and cealed from the factory. I unlocked both through the same Cellunlocker.net site for $25.00 each. I rooted both phones and installed CWM. After insalling Saurom RC7 and the Vkl1 Tmo Radio, everything was fine for about a month. All of a sudden, on my phone, I start losing Network/Data, needing a restart to get it back. Over the past month, I am up to an average of 20-30 restarts a day and sometimes it only works 50% of the time, the other 50% I get nothing, at all.
My 2nd phone (wifes) has no issues at all. We both have the same OS/Radio's on them, nothing is different, except for the IMEI number. We both have them in the same area for use and mine will crap out all day long. Nothing I do fixes it. I have replaced the SIM 4 times, reinstalled the same or a new OS many times, Ive heard, oh its your radio, need to reflash it, corrupt file, the list goes on. If its something that you can suggest, I have probably already tried it, software wise. . T-mobile cc says its cause its unlocked, well my wifes is unlocked and doesnt have an issue....soooo.
The only thing I can come up with is there is a difference in Hardware, between our phones. Not intentional, but maybe my Network/Data, antenna is lose or broken and hers isn't. Thats the only thing I can come up with, other than the unlock code is bad, but if thats it, then why did it work solid for a month?
I am at my wits end, I went back to my sad pos Vibrant, that works. I took my note to a local repair place to run diag tomorrow. Hopefully its something they can find and fix and not bend me over in the process. If anyone has any info on this issue, or has had the same problem, please feel free to fill me in.
Thx all in advance

Based on the fact that you are running two identical devices ,with identical software etc.
And based on the timeline of trouble that yours is having ...I'm leaning toward a material defect in the device.
The evidence is simply too strong to ignore ...IMHO
A warranty return is my suggestion ....
And I'm very sorry to hear that news ....g
Just an update....I picked it up from the cell repair store. They told me, my antenna needed to be reseated. Once done, I havent lost signal yet in over 6 hours. Good news is, they didnt even charge me.
If it happens again, I will keep this thread updated, otherwise it looks like it was a hardware problem after all.
Yep...
As expected ....
And great news on the free repair ...g
How did they reset the antenna was it software or did they open IP the device

open the device and push the antenna connecter into its seat.
Easy to say, difficult to do. I don't have a link, but if you go to youtube and search "galaxy note disassembly" you can see it and decide if its something you can do.

Not this guy ....
My shakey old fingers, and poor eyes don't wanna play.
So you might get a pm one day ranger ....with me begging for help on the other end ...LOL ....g
Ok so....my paper weight, still doesn't work. I guess I spoke too soon when I replied all was well. Im not sure what the cell repair store did other than reseating my antenna, but it worked great for a solid day, then started acting up again.
Today I switched my wifes SIM for mine, to try and determin if I just had gotten really unlucky with bad SIM cards. Nope. My SIM worked great in her phone, got signal right away. Her SIM in mine? Didn't get squat on mine, meaning its most deff my hardware (SGH i717).
Long story short, don't purchase online....so you have the ability to take it back to the dealer and throw it through his/her window. I love the Gnote...hands down, coolest phone I have ever had....just wish I didn't get a dud. After all this time, I still haven't heard of anyone having the same issues. I can't be the only 1.
Edit: Just spoke to Samsung and they said it's an issue that happens with the Reciever/Antenna and needs to be repaired. They looked up my IMEI number and said its still under warranty, even though, I took it to a cell repair store and its unlocked with mulitple flashes. As long as it has no water/physical damage, its covered. So I guess I will find out in a couple weeks.
Bad news /good news I guess ...
I'm glad it's getting fixed .....by samsung.
And no ....
You are not the only one ...
There have been 4 others I know of ....
But at this point it's looking like a software issue, with your device being the exception having a hardware failure....g

Hi, I purchased a Rogers i717r used. It came with a custom ICS ROM installed based on AT&TI717UCLE2. It seems to have a similar issue most likely hardware related. Although it would show some signal level it didn't regularly connect to the network. It wouldn't let me make calls or use data. I wanted to make sure all the band were turned on so I followed the guide I've used for other Galaxy devices (see below). It was set correctly to automatic. To further troubleshoot the issue I tried turning on only the GSM frequencies 850/1900 (which is what Rogers uses). I connected immediately to the 2G network and got excellent signal strength. I could make calls and use 2G data. Trying to use only the 3G CDMA bands did not work nor did the COMBI BANDS.
I believe this phone has a antenna wire running from the USB charging/dock board to the mainboard. I wonder if this wire or connector has been compromised. I think the previous owner said the USB connector went bad and it was replaced at some point. I may have to open the phone at check the connectors.
Before I start investigating the hardware, I will try to get it back to stock.
There must at least 3 antennas in this phone maybe more. WiFi, GPS, GSM, 3G, 4G, (possibly multiple for different bands). I'd like to know which one is which.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this is appreciated.
Open the Phone Screen and Type the following code:
* # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * # *
The phone will automatically take you to a screen called:
SERVICE MODE
AND YOU WILL SEE THESE OPTIONS:
----------------------
[1] DEBUG SCREEN
[2] VERSION INFO
[3] UMTS RF NV
[4] GSM RF NV
[5] AUDIO
[6] COMMON
----------------------
all these options are written very very small so you will have to touch the screen very accurately to get the right one... so select them in the following order:
[1] Debug Screen
+
[8] Phone Control
+
[7] Network Control
+
[2] Band Selection
Once you Tap on "Band Selection" you will have a screen stating these 4 Options:

[2] WCDMA Band []
[3] GSM Band []
[4] Combi Bands []

Someone was nice enough to make a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM. It didn't solve the issue though. It still isn't completely stock as the superuser app is still install along with recovery. I guess I need a copy of the unrooted kernel just to be sure it's not software. While in stock GB 2.3.6 I tried the software update feature to upgrade to stock ICS. It reported there was no update available. My guess is it can tell it's been rooted.

At the most basic level*Personal Communications Service*or*PCS*describes a set of*wireless*communications capabilities that allows some combination of terminal mobility,*personal mobility, and service profile management.[1]*More specifically, PCS refers to any of several types of wireless voice and/or wireless data communications systems, typically incorporating digital technology, providing services similar to advanced*cellular*mobile or*paging*services. In addition, PCS can also be used to provide other wireless communications services, including services that allow people to place and receive communications while away from their home or office, as well as wireless communications to homes, office buildings and other*fixedlocations.[2]*Described in more commercial terms, PCS is a generation of wireless-phone technology that combines a range of features and services surpassing those available in analog- and digital-cellular phone systems, providing a user with an all-in-one wireless phone, paging, messaging, and data service.
I figured that's what that meant. I would still like to know what component was replaced. Part# or Sku would be nice, but they are very vague lol. Should have it by Thur/Fri so I will update then if it's still not working and what the overall outcome is, also info on what "component" was replaced, with any luck.
I had the exact same problem after unlocking my i717 through your same online unlock code shop. Signal would drop all the time. I flashed every radio version I could find and that didn't help. Only other thing I could do was flash different roms and see if it somehow fixes.
Haven't used it for a while, but was just re-flashing it so I could gift the device to family and found the Padawan JB v2 and the stock deoxide roms from jedi roms brought back the signal lost. I flashed the latest AoCP 5.8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773229) and no signal lost in the last 12 hours. I'm also on radio version I717UCLF6. Hope this helps anyone else that stumbles on to this tread.
OP, did you figure out which part had to be replaced? I'm having the same problem. I wish Samsung would release this information, such a headache

[Q] Desire 601 International Data Functionality

Hey guys,
I have a pretty unique problem and im not sure there even is a solution, but here goes.
The story is that I had been living in Canada for the last 7 months or so and bought myself a shiny new Desire 601 from Virgin Mobile (its a zara_ul). Since then, I have managed to brick it hardcore style, but i was able to ressurect it after 4 months of fruitless attempts through various odd files, sheer dumb luck, and the RUU from mrplowdans google drive (super props by the way, you saved my phone good sir!). I had to SuperCID the phone in order for the RUU to stick.
So it goes without saying that im now running the Telus version of KK (i updated through the usual OTA once i had returned it to stock 4.2.2) on a VM phone. All good, no issues there. Ive since returned home to Australia, unlocked the phone so it works with an Australian carrier, also all good. Im able to make calls and send texts no issue.
My problem is with mobile data. It seems to be having an issue connecting to my carriers 3g/4g. Initially, there was nothing at all, just the bars in the notification bar telling me that i had a good connection to cellular. No little superscript 3G though, and in settings, although mobile data is 'On', it is showing connection failed. Adding a custom APN appeared to work slightly, the 3G appeared in the notification bar and in settings, mobile data was shown to be 'connected', but still no dice when i try to connect to the web or download an app.
Now i vaguely understand the principles involved here, I get that North american carriers use a different radio frequency to, say, Europe, and that differs again to Australia. My question is, is it on the software side? Would it be possible to find an Australian Radio.img for a desire 601 (i dont even know if they sell them here), flash it, and all will be fine and dandy? Or is it the physical antenna inside the phone that is set to receive only a certain frequency? Im not expecting someone to go and find me a working file or anything, i know most of you live in Canada anyway, but im looking for someone with a greater knowledge of these things to find a theoretical fix.
I know I rant a lot, but in the scheme of things im willing to let this problem slide considering i only just un-bricked it a few days ago AND managed to root 4.4.2 (a significant achievement given my non-existent knowledge of android), but it is a nuicance and if theres something simple i can do of course i will.
Thanks in advance for any help <3
EDIT: Ive since done some googling and discovered that they do sell these phones in Australia, and that the Network specs for it and the canadian model that i have are almost identical, many of the frequencies are the same on both. Leads me to assume that its software sided, the telus radio.img is telling the phone to not see non-canadian frequencies.

[Q] Please help! LG VS890 rooting problem

I've been trying for over two weeks to root my LG Enact (Verizon branded), with no luck. This is not the most popular phone out there, but I like my QWERTY keyboard, I can't help it. It's an 8GB phone, the stock ROM is KitKat, it's a capable little device. So I'm going to keep at it until I find a solution. But I could use some help.
Unfortunately, I've tried just about every tethered AND untethered method out there, and nothing is working. The root-by-adb scripts run into a brick wall if they boot the phone into recovery, because the phone refuses to communicate that way, the computer says "Device not recognized" once recovery starts. (And all of those drivers are as up-to-date as I can make them.) The ones that use Download Mode (such as the LG One-Click Root method I tried, from this forum) get a little further, but they never complete the process. There are several apk methods that claim to be able to root without the adb connection, like framaroot, towelroot, kingoroot, etc., but none of these works either. I think I've tried them all. (And I'm going to have to do some hefty virus-scanning on my computer, after all the shady places I've wound up, from following bogus links while looking.)
The phone's stock ROM seems to have been set up with an extra layer of security which most devices don't have, which is one problem. We all know the "Allow installation of apps from unknown sources" option in the Security menu; mine also has a choice below it to "Disallow or warn before installation of apps that may cause harm", which of course I leave UN-checked. In Developer Options, grouped with USB Debugging, there is another "option" to "Verify apps over USB -- Check apps installed via ADB/ADT for harmful behavior", which is automatically checked when Debugging is enabled, but the "option" is grayed out and cannot be changed. So it's likely that NO tethered method will ever root this phone, because anything I attempt to install that way will be flagged as "harmful behavior".
Sorry this is growing so long, but you need to know what I've already explored, which explains my next question: there MAY be a way to run a root exploit directly from the phone, if I can find a way to manually place the file (such as the zipped ioroot exploit) in a folder which recovery can access, and this is where I'm asking for help. The stock recovery has two other selectable options, besides "Apply update from ADB" (which is where some file would be sideloaded, if the phone didn't stop communicating here) -- there is also "Apply update from cache", and "Apply update from external storage". I already have the appropriate file on the SD card, but when I try that option, the phone says it "Cannot mount SD card, no CSI structures installed", or something like that... which renders the SD unusable during recovery. If I look at the "Apply from cache" selection, it gives me four choices, which are "backup/", "fota/", "lost+found/", and "recovery/". The problem here is, none of those "cache" folders are in a location I can access... they must be in a system partition which I can't even see, without root.
So if anyone has ANY thoughts on this -- either how to force the phone to leave the SD mounted during recovery, or how to move a file to an invisible partition -- would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried kingroot not kingoroot?
Tried them both, no dice
I used kingroot on Verizon LG VS890 (fx3q) running Android 4.4.2 to successfully achieve root. Saferoot and others did not work for me.
Rooted with NewKingrootV4.50_C120_B220_xda_release_2015_09_02_105243.apk installed with ES file explorer.
Thank you!!! That method finally worked for me.
Verizon
Glad I was able to help you.
Where you able to activate your phone on a new different provider? Even after rooting I wasn't able to get the Verizon VS890 to register on Canadian provider (Wind).
Thanks

Rooting would have nothing to do with activating this phone on another network. The LG VS890 (Enact) does not support GSM. The SIM slot is strictly for VZW LTE. This phone was not classified as a world phone, thus not needing to be unlocked like other VZW phones, and/or was produced before they were required to have their phones unlocked, but either way, it's not working on a GSM network.

Thanks for the reply, but Wind mobile is CDMA not GSM.
Both employ 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum

In the US, Verizon is mainly a CDMA network, although you can get Verizon phones that are capable of either type of network. If you have a CDMA network in Canada, the phone should work. I have mine set up with StraightTalk Wireless, which is run by WalMart (don't laugh, the service is CHEAP and very reliable). The procedure was NOT very straightforward, and their telephone support is ridiculous (very poor English, had to explain things several times, took three attempts to get it done, etc.), but perseverance paid off. Don't give up.
The thing I'm having trouble with now, is finding custom ROMs for the phone. It's running KitKat, so it's not ancient, and if I can't use anything but the stock ROM, so be it. But I'm dying to try flashing Lollipop or even Marshmallow. It has to be a very specific ROM for that phone, because of the keyboard... the wrong firmware won't function properly. And there are a lot of bogus sites out there which want you to "complete a survey" or "sign up for one of these offers", but they never give you the download, it's just an endless circle of phishing sites.

I'm not even from Canada and I know that is not correct. Wind Mobile is certainly GSM. It uses the same frequenices and bands as the American T-Mobile network.

Unfortunately, Zero, he's right. The "official" list of CDMA networks operating in Canada is small, and dwindling. Telus Mobility and Sasktel Mobility have CDMA through sometime in 2016, while Bell Mobiility plans to keep it through 2017. SogoTel is the only one which seems intent on staying CDMA, but they "roam" on Bell, so your coverage may be restricted after the 2017 cutoff. All depends on where the CDMA towers are located.
If you have WalMart up there, and you probably do (we call it "UberMart" down here), you may be able to get Straight-Talk like I have, which contracts to use both sets of towers as needed. Check their website, it should tell you if it's available in your area. Just be prepared to pull teeth to do it -- they will send you an "activation kit" for something like $4.99, which has a couple different sizes of SIM card (which the phone needs to operate correctly, just not for GSM access). Online activation may fail, and you'll have to spend a few hours talking with someone from India with very minimal training who will ask you the same questions over and over, assume it's a defective SIM card and send you a second one, all before finally getting the picture that it's NOT a GSM phone and has to be activated as CDMA. Worth the struggle, for the price. ($45/month, unlimited talk/data/text)... as long as your towers give you adequate CDMA coverage.
I appreciate everyone's input. I am an avid HTC user since the Hermes, slide out versions. Currently using a HTC M8 on Rogers, here in Canada. I stick with HTC because I've always been able to root and run custom roms, firmwares with the awesome support of this board.
I was trying to help out my little brother with his phone, despite my advice he just had to have a horizontal slide out keyboard so he ordered this phone. Big brothers job was to make it work.
We did our homework, and compared network specs, so technically this phone should work on Wind network (CDMA to CDMA same bands) but I didn't bother calling in for technical support. Perhaps if I had called in they may have pressed the correct buttons to activate the phone. The phone did accept the Wind SIM but never activated/registered.
He sent the phone back for refund so I can't play around with it anymore. Again, many thanks for everyone's help, input. Right or wrong, all appreciated. ZS
