New to Android? Here's some really useful stuff to be reading...
Its Android general stuff as opposed to Hero Specific stuff, which I'm sure will be plentiful on this section anyway.
(But here's a link to the Hero Manual and HTC Sync, just for ****s and giggles http://www.htc.com/hero/m/en/index.html )
First an android wiki
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Magic.2FSapphire
has stuff specific to Dream (G1) and sapphire (Magic) handsets, but a lot of the code stuff might be worth experimenting with to see what is the same, since both those handsets run Android Cupcake or 1.5OS
This thread is on the Magic forum but is a good place for links on allsorts of mods on the Magic which I suspect will be similarly acheived on the Hero.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529062
A general android FAQ here
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Android_FAQ
Has a good section on hacking and development.
These sites have info on Android Apps and some.apk downloads if you don't have access to the Android Market.
http://www.cyrket.com/
http://www.androlib.com/
There you go peeps - Mods can this be a sticky? Cos I'm in the middle of my next adult novel and I can't keep babysitting these guys.... (kidding)

Useful post...

Well spotted. Link removed from 1st post.
Thanks
Dave
If you read the title, this says Info resources for those new to ANDROID and the thread on the sapphire forum has lots and lots of very useful links for anyone using the Android 1.5 OS - which of course includes Hero.
It also quite clearly SAYS its studff for the magic that might be a good starting point for the Hero.
Apols for the Droidappz link tho - my bad...
Daisy xxx
the link to ipmart-forum is allowed ???
I've removed it - I put them on because a lot of apps are free anyway and the folks who have no market access can get .apk from there.
Guess if folks need em they can always google...
Daisy xxx
Very useful Dayzee. Have had a quick parse, will be looking deeper tomorrow, quite possibly before I go to the pub. You have your vices, I have mine ;-)
Thank you very much for the pointers
The Hero WIKI is looking very healthy now, so that's a great place to start too. Links to lots of ROMS all in one place, as well as Radios and flashing guides - One Stop Shop for Hero Info!!

I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to create a GSM and CDMA sub-forum for the Hero, since there are some marked differences between the models, not limited to the baseband and specialized apps for each network? Just a thought.

noob question
hi dayzee first of all thanx a lot for so much useful information, i've read through the different threads and found that one need to put some zip file in sd card and then restore from there, but i have found and downloaded a rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622 and it seems like official RUU file so i was just wondering what should i do with it, just run this EXE and follow the steps or i need to do some tricks?
i was looking around but i cant find it does anyone know were i can find it
palm pre rom
Are you serious...? This probably doesnt exist, and your not really looking at the right website. This is mainly for WinMo and a little Android here and there....
Why on earth would you want on on your fuze
The fuze is a great device with great ROMs why would you want a Palm Pre ROM for a fuze?
Its like puting windows 98 on a brand new MacBook Pro, now why would you do that??? try something like the EnergyROM I find it very stable and full of good tools and tweaks. Its also eye candy!!!
All I can say is LOL! and let the flaming begin!
Merrell
This Gaza-god fellow should be banned. He is constantly opening "find me a Palm Pre stuff" threads in different Raphael sub-forums, and he's soooooo annoying.
No such thing exists, please search before starting new threads.
Can I ask that you take sometime to review the forum rules before you continue posting on this site.
Thanks
Dave
Usually I'm really good at figuring things out myself, but I've just gotta ask:
What's the difference between the custom ROMs?
I'm using Fresh right now, but I might as well have spun a wheel and picked at random. I tried browsing each thread, but couldn't find any useful hints as to what it's about. Is it just speed?
I understand that 2.1 is under development and not fully functional, so what is MCR, Fresh, Modaco?
MCR and Modaco are the same MCR = Modaco Custom ROM.
It is just a rom made by Paul O'Brien at http://hero.modaco.com
Really it's another custom ROM, just personal preference dictates which you use. Personally, I use MCR3.0, although there is a beta of 3.1 available for ad-free members of his site, and it will be publicly released when ready.
So the difference between Fresh and Modaco is...?
Fresh is a CDMA Rom, so you'd probably be better off asking this in the CDMA subforum.
Regards,
Dave
This is the HTC Hero questions and answers forum, so I'm asking here.

You could try and search for yourself, or at least be gratefull for the things Anon and others say
You're not gonna ask here how you're able to flash the motorola droid are you?
Cos the cdma hero is another phone. It has a dedicated subforum and people
who own a gsm hero (the folks over here) can't tell the difference because a CDMA version doesn't work on a GSM hero.
It's easy to blame others for not searching yourself, these people are trying to help. The only thing you want is a list of pro's and con's....
Considering custom roms are made to fit personal needs no one is gonna make a list good enough for you.
Search before you ask

I did! I advised you to ask the question in the subforum for the CDMA Hero, but you decided to ignore that advice.
A little history lesson for you - the Hero forums existed long before the CDMA Hero was released by Sprint. Once Sprint had released their version of the Hero, Sprint users lobbied long and hard for a CDMA subforum (which they've now got). To be honest, the Sprint Hero probably deserved its own set of forums rather than just a subforum, just the Verizon Droid Eris did.
The *reason* that I advised you to go there is because most of the ROM discussions outside of the CDMA subforum is related to the GSM Hero. If you'd flashed MCR 3.1 to your device (as mentioned earlier in this thread), you may well have bricked your device.
Sarcastically saying that "You sure make it easy" when you've been given good advice isn't going to get you very far here!
Regards,
Dave
Sorry guys. Bad week. Cheers for the guidance.
Evening guys and gals...
now im thinking this question may have been asked a lot but i couldnt see a clear answer flicking through the forum.
Ive had my HD2 for a while now and pretty much since the day i got it, it just hasnt impressed me so i want to make it A) more user friendly and B) just look and run better.
My problem here is that unlike the Iphone i had before im not sure where to begin with it. So my question how do i go about modding the phone? Is there a guide on here ive been to blind to see, or perhaps someone can give me some pointers.
Im thinking that unlike the iphone where its just a case of jailbreak it and mod it from the phone the HD2 as it runs windows takes a lot more effort/work?
Thanks in advance for any help given.
Read.....The HTC Leo (HD2) Wiki pages - to learn about the HD2 in all its' glory
Read..... HD2 STICKIES | USEFUL INFO | POSTING RULES - to learn about how to.... what to.... where to.....
Read..... all threads starting [ROM]..... in the HD2 ROM Development thread - then you'll know what other people are doing with their HD2's.
That's a good starting point ...... should take you most of August to get through that little lot and then you should be in good shape to start updating and tweaking your HD2 to behave just how you want it to.....
Hope that helps!!
Mark.
Your my new hero! Cheers buddie
Been spending too much time flipping back and forth between the dev forum and here trying to find the latest scoop on what is going on with a permanent root solution. With the threads getting closed and people getting banned over on the dev forum, not even the devs are posting any real updates there any more. And here... the threads are broken up. So how about one consolidated thread to talk about status, rumors, etc.? ONE place to go to get the latest scoop.
For example, TeamWin posted on Twitter yesterday that there are no big announcements and they've run into a lot of roadblocks. Also said something about having to try different avenues now. Sounds like permaroot could take a while. Maybe someone posted that info here somewhere, but it's hard to tell where to look any more to find the latest status, rumors, and talk about root. Even the devs have given up posting in the dev forum.
Mike
I think it's time to put the screws back to HTC to make good on their "promise"
This phone WILL be going back if they don't unlock it.
It's ok, as good as these devs are... I never really expected full root unless HTC unlocks the phone.
I just hate that this site, well at least the 3D section has become retardedly over moderated. Perfect example of someone who doesn't need a bus patrol badge IMO.
In before thread lockdown lol

Yep that's exactly what I was about to say. Heck, it's even stickied at the top of the dev page.. Not sure why this thread exists.
If you guys actually want success with the return under 30 days policy, you need to give that threat to the CARRIER and have them place the pressure on HTC. It will NOT hurt the HTC bottom line if you return your phone to sprint. Sprint already bought the phone FROM HTC. So it hurts Sprint, not HTC.

That thread (and the other one there) don't do the job. That's why this one exists! First of all, if I only wanted to be updated once a day, there wouldn't be a worn out blank key between F4 and F6 on my keyboard.
Second, us "normal" users can't post in that forum and those threads are not updated as regularly (or as well) as you say. Right now, if you wanted to know the latest status (from Twitter) that says "#teamwin No big announcement tonight. We hit some pretty big road blocks. But I'm working on a new angle to Fre3dom" you can't find it any place but here. People who have their ear to the ground should be able to post what they find... when they find it.

You won't get an ETA because one can't be given yet. Until someone actually achieves a full unlock, you can't possibly say how long it will take. You just keep trying different things until you break through. Once a full unlock is achieved then it's a matter of hours or a few days before it will be released so that the unlock can be put into an easy-to-use format & combined with other nice things like a custom recovery. There's also no telling who will find the unlock. It might be TeamWin or Unrevoked or someone else.

fre3dom is full root
Guys, can we please use better judgment when creating new threads? Many threads are redundant and is only cluttering the board. The Hero and EVO 4G boards were cleaner and more mature, then again maybe its because newer posters have less experience with forum etiquette. There are threads that adequately address the root status and progress, you can't get updates like a stock ticker. Your unrooted phone won't gain a thing from minimal updates, and asking for more than an update a day is a bit impatient. Let the devs work in peace, they are not obligated to do this and I'd rather they try to achieve full root rather than worry about reporting news. Even when they update no news they get criticized?
Not trying to be a **** or anything, but this is getting embarrassing. I have been getting tired of XDA because of the EVO 3D board, and thats a shame. I've seen devs walk away because of the behavior of people and to be honest its hard blaming them. If there is an update it'll be in the threads, the info is not hard to find. Let these guys work, they hammered away at code over the holiday weekend too so give them a break.

I think that this thread is better judgment. The Op posted that he wanted to discuss status, rumors, etc... Go post rumors in the actual dev threads. Tell me how that works out.
Whenever anyone posts in the the dev threads they are usually told to go make a post in general. Thats what this op did. I would rather see this thread created to discuss speculation then see the mods freak out because people are cluttering up the dev threads and start locking **** down so that the real Devs have to go post to forums other than XDA to get the word / files out. THAT is embarrassing. Not posting a thread to help keep the dev threads clean. Its not in the Dev forum, its in the general forum.
Let it be.
Oh and yeah... I'm not trying to be a **** either. Just telling you how it is when the Mods freak out over people talking in the Dev thread.
And who did you see walk away? They werent dedicated to the cause if they did. A real dev knows "newbish" behavior and also knows you wont stop it. EVER. So if they left... I say to them... Bye bye.
Fred3dom is no root...no shoot Sherlock..do we need to be censored for asking questions? To some..like me...root is a step to a more important goal...s-off. I am basing my decision to spend hard earned cash for this beast. And if these threads are out of hand...go to any forum...see if there is not humor(sometimes not related to the topic)...see if there is not a release of ideas that are free flowing. See if there is not a bond or sometimes hatred for others. The rules state...this thing is called xda is for sharing of ideas...by the community for the community, developers of software for these devices and newbies that need help. If we have such strict rules...then why have this forum? Learning is done by asking questions and sharing knowledge..not be being so strict...you don't have room to ask questions...and ideas are free forming as is knowledge...they are not something that can be censored...get a grip. ****...we could't even say thank you to the people who work hard to reach a goal...I don't know if you ever had a simple thanks for good work....this is just as important as info...and if you have not noticed...this thread is for root...for you it became a soapbox for yourself...what the he'll does that have to do with root?....a soapbox also...is not root.

Exactly! And try to find one thread where all the latest rumors and info is being posted. DOES NOT EXIST. That's exactly why this thread exists. So in keeping on topic, the latest rumor mill shows that HTC is apparently getting ready to unlock the bootloader on the Sensation. Rumors are the 3vo shouldn't be far behind. Details are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155755
My proposal was to keep ALL of this new info in ONE thread. Else you end up with the problem I was trying to solve which is every new little tidbit creating a new thread. Tomorrow "New email from HTC..." will be irrelevant to most and that'll scroll off the bottom of the forum and get lost for the people who haven't seen it yet. Post all this stuff HERE and we can keep up to date.
I know forum etiquette: I run my own forums. So I don't need lectures from mod-wanna-be's. But this IS a good place to keep all the info where everyone can see it: IF people stop posting every little tidbit as different threads.
