FRESHLY ROOTED, only getting 1x - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all of ye' who are vastly superior to my in the art of "phone skillz"... I just rooted my bolt and I'm stuck on 1x ALL THE TIME.. Super strong signal just no 3g. Immediately after root, I was seeing 1x so, i flashed DAS BAMF 1.7 figuring the problem would be resolved... But, no... So, i assume that my lack of knowledge is preventing me from figuring this out and now i'm resorting to graveling for help from you geniuses at XDA....
Any insight as to what might be causing this?!?!?
Build: 1.13.605.7_das_bamf_1.7
software: 1.13.605.7
baseband: 1.1.00.0402w_1
Thanks a lot!!

Rooting wouldn't have caused your problem. Call Verizon and see if they are having any outages in your area.

oh yeah, in the "network" section is shows "mobile network type" as being "CDMA - 1xRTT"... dunno what the heck that means or if its relevant..

Toasty, thanks.. However, my wife is sitting right here with her bolt and she's rockin' 3g all the time... Maybe just my junk phone?

Interesting, dial *#*#4636#*#*, then go to phone information. Scroll to the bottom and click the Drop down menu. Make sure (If in 4G) it is set to CDMA + Lte/EvDo or if you know you are only going to be using 3G select CDMA Auto (PRL).

Since he's on BAMF 1.7, he can go to the BAMF Toolkit and go to LTE settings.
(Same thing, easier than typing all those numbers... )

If everything checks out, leave it on evdo/lte combo and let things settle for a couple of hours and it will come back. I've had this issue. Has to do with network registration. It sucks, but what can you do, hope you have wifi nearby for now. It happened to me after downgrading from gb radio back to ota froyo radio.

Thanks completely forgot since I have been running CM7 for a while. Using this APP takes you right where you need to be.

awesome, thanks for the fast responses guys! I went in to the DB toolkit and changed to CDMA Auto (PRL) and the phone rebooted for some reason (random reboot?) ... Regardless, it's rockin' 3g now!
You guys are awesome, thanks a lot! Should i ever change back to the other option with LTE though?? I don't have 4g in my area but, is it a good practice to have the option there??

if you dont have 4g, there's no point to have it look for LTE at all.

My Tbolt did that more than a few times the first few weeks I had it. In fact, it took nearly 45 minutes for mine to make any data connection at the store when I was buying it. Is it a 1x or a 1X. The little x typically means its roaming. It should be a large X at least.

i would just leave 4g off until you get coverage, all it would really do is eat the battery faster.

Agreed.
In my flash happy ROM experiences, especially when going from a GB based radio to a Froyo based radio ROM...it takes a while to get on to LTE.
It gets 1X off the bat, but it'll take a few moments for LTE.

Anytime you change the radio settings and commit the changes, the radio should auto reboot to set the settings properly...

I did read a tip that setting it to CDMA Auto (PRL) provides better battery life even if you are in an area with LTE. I did make the change on mine to see, and it does seem to help a bit. And I have zero issue hitting 4G nearly all the time.
EDIT: Seems rebooting causes it to revert back to CDMA auto. Sorry I'm new to all this trying things out as I go.
EDIT2: post I read was utter BS.

bamf signal issues?

Anyone having issues with signal on bamf 1.3? Was having problems with 3g dropping out a lot before I flashed. It seems to be worse since I flashed... I'm not in 4G area and remember seeing something about 3g issues when not in 4G.... Anyone have any info on this?
Running BAMF 1.3 with latest kernel from Adrynalyne and seem to have no issues with signal strength.

Same here. I havent noticed any difference than stock
No problem here as well.
So far so good. Live in a area with good 4g, but work where 4g is spotty... Haven't noticed any issues vs the stock rom.
I am in no 4G area as well and no problem except I never got more than 2 bars compared to full on my DX. I however changed the settings on the modem (dial ##778# password 000000) so it could be why I have no drops in 3G.

4G will be enabled by default. If it can't find a 4G signal, it will then drop to 3G or 1x.
It's the same way when 3G first came out it tried to stay on that radio band and would only drop to 1x when it HAD to.
If you've done the hack to turn off 4G, then make sure you select CDMA auto (PRL) and NOT CDMA only
For the other peeps new out there reading this and wondering what both I and infamous are talking about, here's the skinny:
There is currently no widget to shut off the 4G radio on demand yet, but we all expect one soon. You can change the radio settings manually by doing the following:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* then select "Phone Information", scroll down to the dropdown box and choose CDMA auto (PRL).
Be advised, this will disable 4G permanently until you follow the same procedure and switch back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto
There are a couple of apps floating around that do this for you, as well

I realized that, I have been using that app called "Any Cut" and made a short cut to my phone info and have been switching it from there. I click "CDMA auto (PRL)" and I get neither 3g or 1x. I used to own an Incredible and I would get 3g almost everywhere and didn't have a problem with it. But now, I either have 4g or no internet connection at all (unless connected to Wifi).
I am getting the same thing. When I use CDMA auto (PRL) I only get 1X. If I use CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto the I will get 3G. I think right now it all depends on where you are located and how many problems Verizon is having in your area. After all this is their first phone to be on this new network setup.
I did the steps here and it helped a ton.

[Q] old iphone reception > evo 3d?

my friend has an iphone 3gs and we're both on the same carrier. she gets way way better reception with her iphone and i am wondering why. i read a couple threads that suggest the antennae of the evo being at the bottom being the problem cause when you hold it your hand blocks the signal, however if i place both phones side by side and not even touch them the iphone signal is still a lot better. how is it that a nearly 3 year old phone smashes a modern day smart phone in terms of reception?
Are both phones using the same speed of network? I didn't think the iphone 3gs did the 3G or 4G? I thought it was only a 2G phone.

How do you know? By the signal meter? The signal meter on a phone is a joke. Like the battery meter on some phones (which show full until it drops like a rock and dies), the signal meter can be falsified as well. The iPhone on AT&T shows a 4g connection even though it only uses their 3g network. On the stock Rom, our evo3d shows a 3g connection even if it is only 1x. I would test bandwidth using Speedtest and if those are comparable, then don't sweat it.

she's definitely got better reception. we're talking like, I'll have no bars, or 1, and nothing internet wise is working but she'll have like 2-3 and her net will be flying.
Interesting
There may be something to this.
There is a little shop I like to shop at. The shop is inside a building with a metal roof. Now you would not expect to get a good signal in there. I don't.
I have go outside in the parking lot to make a phone call. A friend of mine's daughter whips out her Iphone one day and starts talking away while in this same store. I asked her who her carrier was. Att. She gets 3 bars in the store.
I researched it and there is only one Att Tower in that area. so we are both using the exact same tower and using the exact same carrier but her reception is so much better.
In general though I don't usually experience a problem with signal strength almost anywhere else I go. No dropped calls ever with the EVO 3D.

I tried to set it in the network menu, but my only options are to choose from "Global" or "CDMA/LTE"
It looks like verizon has done away with letting the user choose from 3G or LTE.
I'm pretty upset with that considering my battery won't make it through half a day unless I'm on 3G...

Yikes! I hope that's fixed on the OTA! I'm always in a 4G/LTE area, but run CDMA 99% of the time because LTE will drain my battery in under 6hours. On 3G/CDMA, I can usually get 14-16 hours. Glad I just bought an external 1800mAh battery pack.
I'm using the app called "phone info" that was suggested earlier in this thread.
App works great and let's we switch to cdma only without a hitch, and but lte in enabled when I reboot my phone.
I also hope that this minor issue is corrected in the final product version. My phone will drain in a matter of about two or three hours of LTE the way I use it.

to make life even easier, download an app called minimalistic text. Once downloaded use it to create your our 3G/4G widget that once clicked on launches the phone info app, seems to work alright for the time being. but a dedicated 3g/4g switch would be great i dont see how something like this could be overlooked by moto/verizon
Just want to note that I'm having the same issue. I cannot find a way to turn off 4g, I tried dialing the 4636 number and it actually dialed the phone rather than launching the config menu. I'd like to be able to disable 4g at times since I am often in an area without 4g.

Weird 3G data issue..no 3G data w/LTE off.

I have rooted my EVO LTE using HTC Dev and S-OFF with Lazy Panda. I applied the De-odexed STOCK 1.22.651.3 ROM and 1.05.11.0606 radio. When I toggle LTE off, I have no 3G data, but with LTE on data works fine. With LTE enabled, "Network Signal Info" reports net type as EHRPD. With LTE toggled off, net type is listed as EVDO Rev A, with a data state of disconnected.
Can anyone help me here?

HTC has already said there would be no difference with lte/cdma being on. It's not like there's two different radios on at the same time. Cdma and lte are both built in the same chip. Just leave it alone...no need for the tinkering.

There's no difference in battery UNLESS you have LTE connection. LTE will drain the battery a lot faster.
OP, if you don't have LTE, just keep it on. As long as you aren't using it, you won't drain any faster.

I suppose I COULD leave the data connection to CDMA/LTE, but that kind of defeats my initial question. I think I might go for a drive and see if it's perhaps just the local tower causing me issues, or if this "bug" persists outside my home turf.

Did you find a fix?
I have found that after I update my profile this happens to me also. Same thing 2 phones rooted. or not rooted, s-off or not s-off. Don't matter.
Just switch to CDMA only if you updated on LTE/CDMA. Or switch to LTE/CDMA if you updated on CDMA only. This works for me, don't know why but it does. Every time! Also have found that after some time I can switch back and all is well.
Hope this helps

Well it's nice to know I'm not the only one with problems. As the saying goes, misery loves company.
As for now, I'm thinking I might just run run the RUU and go back to stock 1.13.651.1 (unrooted) for a while and see how things fare. I can "deal" without root access for a few weeks, and who knows, maybe by then the DEV community will have found a way to S-OFF the new 1.22.651.3 OTA update. I'm in the greater Boston market and we're due to have LTE switched on VERY soon. I'll save a Nandroid backup of my current s-off/rooted 1.22.651.3 in case I want to visit this in the future.

Ok so with my CDMA only & LTE/CDMA dilemma behind me, my phone is now switching the 3G on to send and receive MMS messages. This is the first time I've seen this with my EVO LTE. Previously my MMS messages were sent and received via WiFi, which was noticeably faster. DO you have any tips to help me in this scenario?
Justin
I have had the same issue and haven't been able to resolve it.
I had 3G up until last Tuesday in Minnesota and talked with Sprint. They tried to reset my phone and then tried to do the hands free activation and it failed. I flew to Dallas for vacation, turned on the phone and it activated in less than 30 seconds.
Returned back from Dallas and still no 3G in Minnesota (Minneapolis and Central MN).
I do have my MSL, but any tips on how to get 3G data back again?

Is it True or BS that EVO LTE will have a fix for LTE connection issues?

I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

I use to get spotty LTE here in san Antonio so I thought it was the radio. But now I've been getting it pretty consistantly everywhere. So now I'm starting to think its there towers or something

Using a Sense ROM, open your phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Select "Phone Information" then scroll down to "Preferred Network Type" and that should give you the option you're looking for

Or download the app "network" from playstore. Let's u do the same thing while less obtrusive and gives u more options.

Can you link it? I'm finding various apps named "network" something or another but none with just that solely as the title
The icon changed so I had a bit of trouble finding it but here you go Network app

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

Someone try the 10/21 build of cm10 from deck.
I'm holding lte and seeing it places I couldn't get it before even when set to lte only.
This has completely corrected the issue for me.
