I tried to root my new Samsung Galaxy S II today using the instructions in the CF-Root thread and in the videos provided by this guy on youtube.
I was nearly across the finish line, but when I click the big "Root" button on SuperOneClick, it freezes at "Running psneuter" and won't go any further or shut down (without Task Manager intervention).
I've tried leaving it for > 10 mins, turning off all antivirus and I've tried 2 different superoneclick versions (1.9.1 and 1.7) to no avail. Edit Tried GingerBreak via SuperOneClick also and that freezes at "Running GingerBreak".
Because of this, I'm pretty sure my root isn't going through properly. Mainly because when I check if my phone is rooted properly I can't get su access in shell.
Any ideas/thoughts about what to do?

You're telling me it already is rooted?
5. After the phone reboots go to:
Code:
settings > Applications > Developmentand put a tick in USB debugging if it's not already ticked.
Do I need to do this step: I didn't see it on the video guide at this topic:

Hi mate, I have the same problem as the other guy. So is my already auto-rooted or something? What do I do now if yeah?

What should I do? It is stuck like that for about half an hour already...
It says that it is already rooted
But it is not...
I used Odin to put an insecure kernel
and once i try to use S2 Root I have this error.
I try to use Titanium Backup for example and it says I dont have root permissions.
Hmmm.. Did you had the phone on? I mean, like not in download mode. Just turn on like normal?
step 1. Go to a proper root guide
step 2. flash cf kernel
step 3. profit?

The insecure cf-root kernel already rooted the device, no need to use s2 root or anything else.

Yes, I had the phone turned on
And even if I don't use S2 Root It says I don't have root privileges in Titanium Backup
Do you have an app called "superuser"? If not you have to download it from Market and download Busybox from Market too.
Hope it works.

i have done everything till step 9 in root guide

has anyone confirmed that SuperOneClick works for AT&T's Galaxy S II?
It does work. During step 6 the app will hang, unplug your phone from the USB > Turn USB debugging off, then on again > plug it back in--it should now complete the root process. Keep in mind you must have CWM installed first.
yeah man works like a charm, I was kinda afraid it would be hard but the one how-to makes it real straight forward

On its own - no. All of the classic SOC holes were plugged in Gingerbread because malware was using them too.
SOC can still root a device that has an insecure kernel, such as codeworkx's CWM kernel. So you have to flash the kernel then root. (The idea is that insecure kernels have root for ADB but not for applications - so SOC uses this fact to push su and Superuser.apk to the correct locations via ADB.)
Another option is to flash a pre-rooted /system package - right now my unbrick package in dev section includes a rooted /system - flash it and you've got root, no SOC needed.
I decided to root my Samsung Galaxy SII i9100 (International Edition), so of course reading homework came first. After reading some guides/FAQs about rooting, I had one question: How do I choose the right guide?
I found this first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297557
Leading to this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II:_Full_Update_Guide
But this "Full update guide" starts by installing the ClockWorkMod. From what I understood, you need to be rooted for that, so does this guide assume you are rooted before installing the ClockWorkMod? Or is rooting part of what you get for installing the ClockWorkMod?
IF YES, what does this part want me to do? :
6. On the computer, open terminal and run the following command from the Heimdall directory:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
And another few rooting guides I found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693
This one roots and installs CWM using SuperOneClick and Odin. Neither Odin OR SuperOneClick are mentioned in the "Full update guide"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
This one uses Odin but not SuperOneClick. It also comes with CWM 4, whereas there is a CWM 5 already. Is this guide too old?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126522
And then there is this one (which seems like what I need seeing how I'm a noob at this) And it talks about a Kernel I need (I have XWKI4)
So from these many guides, how do I know which one is the one I need? The full update guide seems to have a very different approach from the rest. And maybe the others just talk about the same thing using different names... (What is CFroot?)
I'm quite confused by this. I know I can find a lot by just googling and looking on XDA, but this time I found too much. So, which guide would be the best for me to use?
I have Android Version 2.3.4
Baseband Version I9100XXKI1
"Kernel Version" says:
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468
[email protected] #2
^ Seemed interesting as it had "root" in the name.
Please give me that push in the right direction.
This is by far the easiest and best way to go in my opinion.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Basically you flash the correct kernel via Odin. Instantly you have root + cwm + busybox installed.
Read the first few posts to get a grip on it then follow the instructions.
Actual process takes a few seconds.

Thanks everyone, I used the guide and it worked. I also installed CyanogenMod 7, but there's a problem.
I downloaded gapps and installed them through CWM, and then I tried downloading a video player from the market but I get an error saying 'There is insufficient space on the device'.
My internal storage (11.5gb) still has 2 gb left. And the internal storage for apps (1.97gb) still has 1.93gb left... what's wrong?
I read it could have something to do with not whiping, but I did do that before flashing CM7!

try to go in settings, applications, manage applications, market. Clear data.
Try dw again.
Also reboot your device once if you didnt after cm7 flashing

Thanks, fixed it now. Restarted and whiped once more.
But for some reason my home button doesnt work :/ I chose "default desktop" as the binding to the home button... but it doesn't do anything
Also, the lockscreen doesn't work. When I press the power button once, screen turns off. When I press it (or home button) again, it goes back to whatever page was open before locking.

From cwm recovery try:

Hi
My Samsung Galaxy SII cannot be accessed via its USB slot. I am able to recharge the phone over USB but that is all. Basically it got wet (very wet) and after much salvaging I managed to get USB recharging functionality back but lost USB data access.
My question. Is there anyway that I can root my phone without using USB.
Details:
Android version: 2.3.3
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE2
Baseband version: I9100XXKDJ
I have tried using Gingerbreak (which I got onto the phone via AirDroid) but this isnt working for me.
I cannot use Odin or ADB because of my USB problem.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Many thanks!
John
Use wireless adb to install the zergrush root
or I saw something on the front page of xda about a mobile odin version that you could use right on the phone
edit I just actually read more on the movile odin and you need a CWM5 kernel so you will have to use the wireless adb for zergrush first then dd a rooted kernel in place manually then you will have CWM installed fine.

Many many many thanks!!
I have re-read the wireless ADB description. When I first looked at this I thought that I first needed to be root to install it! But now I see that that is not the case.
So with wireless ADB I should be able to manually root my phone.
Brilliant. Thanks!

If you use the EverRoot option (Market/Pro version only), Mobile ODIN will root the firmware while you flash it.
Yes i am misreading above as to will root and or will root on the fly >>as it roots an unrooted phone .

I have downloaded mobile Odin Pro and tried running it.
"Mobile ODIN - Error
SuperUser access is needed, but could not be acquired.
Are you rooted and did you give permission?"
To which I can only press OK.
So I dont have access to "EverRoot".
It was worth a shot though! And I will be using it at some point once I gain root....
Cheers
John
Have you tried the Zergrush root method via wireless adb yet?
Note it will only give root without any custom kernel or recovery. But you can then use adb again to dd the cf-root kernel into place manually and after a reboot recovery will be installed and available.

The command should be
dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Just place the uncompressed zImage file in the base of the sdcard

Forgot to mention just in case that before that you have to do a "su" and authorize it on the phone screen to have permission to do that command.

Hello, I have an Xperia U locked to Fido and wanted to root it to delete apps I don't use in hopes of speeding it up.
I found two procedures on 'noob-proof' rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933985
http://tutorialfor-android.blogspot.ca/2012/12/easy-tutorial-root-sony-xperia-u-on-ics.html
I followed both of them. With Davis' procedure, the phone did prompt me to Restore the Rootme backup, and I did, but... it said 'could not restore'. His batch file finished by rebooting the phone and trying to copy a couple files which it couldn't.
With the Flashtool method, I installed version 0.9.8.0, even tho' 0.9.10.0 is out, because the latter install package would not run on my Win7 64 bit OS, whereas the former would. I followed the instructions but as you can see from the attachment, root was not achieved, I tried twice.
Any help? At least my phone looks and acts the same with these two attempts failing. I'd be lost if I screwed something up. Thanks.

No, I never got the app showing up, as in both of these trys the batch file encountered errors as I mentioned and I never achieved root as far as I know. The phone looks exactly the same. What is the binary root method? I am not a developer and quite the newbie.

just follow the instruction there......
Thanks Christe00. I tried again with the new RunMe batch from the new location you just posted.
Again, when I go to Restore the file (fa01... whatever it is)... my phone reports "could not restore".
Is there anything I can do to make this restore work? I take it the restore of the backup pushed to the phone is key to achieving root?
P.S. I followed the instructions carefully as detailed in the video. I opened a command window as administrator, I checked that the phone ran properly with USB debugging enabled, I made sure Unknown Sources was connected, I typed adb devices and saw my device... I have tried this several times... my phone always says, "cannot restore.... whatever.... " and doesn't restore the backup, and then the phone reboots, there's no SuperUser icon in my App Drawer and it's over.
Appreciate any more help here.

No I didn't see that there was a requirement for that... guess I didn't look closely. Is there another thread that you recommend I read.
