[Q] Problem with Streakmod - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've flashed everything properly and I'm able to boot into streakmod immediately after flashing. However, upon rebooting the phone, going into recovery mode will not take me to streakmod. It will only take me to the stock Dell recovery page (where I can restore or press volume to power down).
Why does this only work immediately after flashboot and not afterwards?
Thanks in advance.

This is on 354 btw.

When you reboot the phone it's supposed to take you to the stock DELL recovery. You choose the option to install update.pkg and then when you see the DELL logo with a yellow exclamation point you press the power button again and it will take you to Streakmod.
Now, if you are using a stock ROM, then you have to use a file manager that gives you root access (such as Root Explorer) to your internal SD card and rename a file called "install-recovery.sh", located in \system\etc (can't remember exactly where it is) and rename it to install-recovery.sh.bak. Then flash Clockworkmod or Streakmod again and you should be good to go

Yeah, it works fine after rebooting through flashboot, but after that the streakmod page will not load up...it will simply take me back to the stock DELL recovery.
I'll try this fix though...thanks!

Stock roms overwrite the recovery after every boot. That's why is works once after flashing. You'll have to run a custom rom to maintain a coustom recovery. Sorry :-(

You do not have to run a custom rom to use a custom recovery. You do have to root your phone so that you can rename the file install-recovery.sh located in the folder /system/etc/ so that it does not run every time you boot your phone. I use stock 351 and the recovery-v0.3.2.7-DoctorWFix.zip version of StrekMod Recovery so I can make nandroid backups. The latest version of MultiRecovery Flasher will install this version.

I was trying to upgrade to 2.1 but was failing miserably. So i decided to FACTORY RESTORE through recovery because i didnt want my root or my clockwork recovery image. but thats when the brickage happened.
thanks.

brickage?
im assuming you mean you are stuck at the dell logo
Ok, you are not bricked.
Just fastboot flash the stock recovery image, then flash an official dell update.pkg. Fixed.
Please use search next time, there's about a million threads exactly the same as this.

you need to copy over the dell image to the sd card and then boot holding down the volume keys and power.
Once there (if you are using the clockwork recovery) install zip from cd card and select the image. If the stock boot image then select upgrade from sd card (or what ever it is).
The big thing is you need to pull the sd card out and get the ROM on it.

so basically.
1. put the dell stock rom on the sd root.
2. install it from sd card (i cant because it says error)
3. pull out the memory card???
im rather confused. still. sorry. this just sucks. no ones fault but mine. let me give in another try
Alright. the stock rom flashed successfully but still hangs at the boot screen "dell". am i missing something here? thanks again

Stock recovery starts instead of clockwork

Everything's been smooth so far in regards to my vibrant modification but I noticed something today that might cause problems in the future
Im running stock rom with kingxkernel 3 and ryans oclf
I can get into clockwork recovery through rom manager without a problem (that's how I've been doing it) but if I go into recovery mode using the hardware keys it brings me to the stock recovery..any suggestions? ??? I know in the very beginning I had to choose reinstall packages and then it showed up but I was afraid to do that again before asking in case it screws up my phone
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
clockwork recovery doesn't replace stock recovery on the vibrant.
If you manually enter recover, you have to do the "reinstall packages" part in the stock recovery which will then load the clockwork recovery.
Oh okay thanks for the reply!

yes, you still need the clockworkmod recovery file (aka update.zip) in order to load clockworkmod recovery.

You have to select reinstall packages, and it will go to the blue recovery again, then press reinstall packages again and clockwork should boot up everytime.
So i just have to keep on reinstalling packages until cwm works?? I think i will lose my superuser etc.. What zip file do i have to put on my intrnal card?

Once u are rooted you done need update.zip for root
What if i already rooted my phone using super one click root on my froyo 2.2? Do I still have to update? By update.zip?

After you used super one click root, delete that update.zip file that it places in your internal memory.
Then download rom manager, click flash clockwork-mod recovery and it should say boot into the blue recovery. In there click reinstall packages, and if it takes yiu to the blue screen again, click reinstall packages one more time and you should boot into clockwork from now on.
Ok thank you master and slave one more question do I still have to install the unzip thing from my internal sd? Or not a any more?

Since you are on 2.2, you need the modified 3e recovery. Then you should be able to get into CWM.
Or you can just use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509 and Odin back to 2.1 and not have any issues updating your ROM.
Reading all the guides helps alot with these questions.

The method I was giving you was for 2.1
Its easier to root from 2.1.
But the thread above should help
Another route around 3e recovery is to use a Voodoo kernel, because those have CWM baked right in. I recommend this because for whatever reason I couldn't get modded 3e recovery working.

odin back to stock as people have said 2.1 is easier to root and then do as ur told with root and cwr!

[Q] ROM Questions

I've read many threads on how to change roms on the Streak.
I've actually managed to install several versions of Stephens ROMs.
I am however still confused on how to get back to a stock Froyo ROM. Why is it a two step process?
What is the relationship between fastboot and streakmod? I think this is the key. Once I understand this, then I will understand why I can't simply use streakmod to get back to stock.
Also, when you install a ROM shouldn't it completely erase everthing there and replace it? I don't understand why I get different results when I apply the same ROM depending on what ROM was applied before. This suggest that there is a preferred sequence when it comes to applying Stephen's latest ROMS.
Last question, how come doing a factory reset doesn't put me back in the state the device came in?

You need a stock recovery to install an update.pkg file (stock roms) and streakdroid recovery (or clockwork, but I suggest streakdroid) to install an update.zip. So you have to flash the stock recovery then install the stock ROM.

The reset restores that last installed ROM. This prevents updates being wiped out by a reset. It's intended to wipe the slate clean for the currently installed ROM.
Okay thanks. starting to make more sense.
I was able to download streak_318_12821_00.pkg file from Dell. I believe this is the Froyo 2.2 stock file from Dell for US versions.
so now i can use fastboot.exe to install this pkg file?

You don't use fastboot.exe to install ROMs.
If you are on a streakdroid rom you use fastboot to flash a stock recovery. This one should work.
You then rename the rom file to update.pkg, put it in the root of your sd card and boot into stock recovery. Select option2 and the stock rom should install. You will have to set up your phone after this (apps, accounts, etc.) so use your favorite backup solution first.
Okay maybe it's beginning to dawn on me.
So customs ROMS can only be installed via a custom ROM loader like streakmod. So once you update yourself to use streakmod, you can no longer install .pkg files which are the stock ROMS.
So now I have to flash the stock ROM installer back to the device to install the stock ROM which is a pkg file. Once it's installed, it replaces streakmod.
So once I'm back at the stock ROM installer and install the pkg file, I will have to reinstall streakmod to update to a Stephen ROM.
Do I have this correct?
Correct

Thanks a million. You helped me understand what a thousand posts across various websites and forums could not.
Not in retrospect it seems absurdly simple.
I've just managed to go back to stock and back to 1.81.
It finally all makes sense now.

dell streak flashing n port problem

hi, i am using a dell streak 5 installed with go launcher. i deletted some system file in root (dell launcher and sort). its all fine till i factory reseted it, now it can boot up but cant seems to go in to menu app and shows blank page when unlocked in lock screen.
and to make things worst, my dell has faulty port which cant detect charger and usb cable.
anyone know how i can flash an resume the stock os?
the set is currently on starhub stock.
i tried download a couple of rom and rename to upgrade.pkg but i keep getting error while trying to run them.. something like status 7..
please help. sorry.
You sound like you haven't a clue. Are you downloading zip files for custom ROMs? Or downloading .pkg files for stock ROMs?

There are more tutorials than I care to mention but basically:
Flash stock recovery
Flash amss and dsp1 files for gingerbread
Download olleh 407 package and rename it update.pkg
Boot into recovery and flash the illegal ROM
After flashing immediately boot into recovery again and do factory reset
First boot will take anwhile
Don't setup phone, let it sit for about 10 minutes
Reboot again
Flash streakmod recovery
Download zip for chosen ROM (DSC preferably)
No need to name it anything special, just know where to find it when flashing
Before flashing wipe cache and dalvik

Well then what you have to do is load the file (zip or package from Dell) wirelessly using something like wireless adb or some type of SMB app (Samba, Remote Web Desktop, there are plenty to choose from.. the fact the port is faulty has ZERO to do with booting into recovery. It only means you can't mount the file system for transfers. Once you have the file in storage then you flash it like anyone else

hi sir, i tried alot stock rom it keep giving an error on status 7,
and dell streak boot up and got a black blank page cos i deleted some system files using root previously.. so i cant really use the phone to do anything at all..
so if u mean the .pkg from dell can solve the issue, where can i get the.pkg directly from dell?
PS: this is my current steps ->
1) i could not flash recovery mode because my charging port is not working/faulty
2) my dell streak 5cant longer put up to android menu, just remain blank after unlock screen cos i deletted some system files using root previously
3) i download almost all the stock .pkg on xdadevelopers and all is giving me error status 7
4) i tried custom rom, streakmui, simplestreak, djsteve, all cant be installed due to cant verify signature.
please help thanks
thanks meanwhile i tried to find my stockrom from starhub , and really cannot be found.

Well if you are getting a Status 7 error that means you are using custom recovery... not being able to verify signature means your zip file is corrupt or you are using Clockwork Mod instead of Streakmod I believe. If you are using Clockwork Mod well there's not much hope because you can't flash... but if its Streakmod then you need to download new zip files.
If the Streak will boot then adb push the new file to the sdcard. You don't even have to unlock the phone to do that

hi thanks for your help.
i did not flash recovery at all as i said, my usb port is faulty and i cant connect my phone to pc for any recovery or fastboot..
anyway i solved the problem by calling the streak using another phone (suprisingly, it rang)
i then can also go into sms to view them.. i texted the streak a link, open the link up, it prompted for wifi and i proceeded.
after going into the link, i then download go launcher from google and install.. and now its all solved.
i bet the fell i deletted is dell stock launcher from system.. so it could load the launcher and menu page.. so installing a custom launcher helps..
but the stock system is still down.. since i could use the phone already, i will try clockwork to flash a recovery thru my fone without usb connection and flash it again.
thanks anyway cdzo72

Basically never use clockwork mode to flash any kind of dell streak series because in my experience may cause a trouble in dell streak itself, better use streakmod v 3.2.8 you can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak_5 I always use this one and look always fine till right now or use stock recovery, if you chose stock recover Install appropriate driver extracted from fastboot zip and then Connect phone pc with usb cable. :
1.Turn phone off
2.Hold down Power + Camera simultaneously until white menu appears
3.Press the Fastboot button in top right corner\
4.Finished
from the PC write this fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img after this your dell streak should be enter the streakmood 0.3.2.8 mode than flash the file room you want to...sori for my bad english
