How is the Low light camera quailty? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, Guys I don't own a SG2 but I am thinking of getting one. I searched the forum and wasn't able to find any info or samples.
I am thinking of SG2 or a Xperia Arc. I know Arc is **** but I really want a good quality camera for night photos. As long as the SG2 camera is better than iphone 4 and comparable to arc I think i'll jump the gun. Right now i am using Desire Z and the photos are crap compared to my nexus S.
oya I searched online reviews and sample but they only do daytime photo samples which I find almost useless.

I think the camera is pretty decent.
Better than that of the Iphone 4.
You can not expect it to be anywhere near as good as a real (dslr) camera, but for a phone camera its among the best. I doubt the camera of the Xperia Arc is better.
Also, please note that the front-facing camera is really good too. Its very sensitive - noticably more sensitive than that of the iPhone - so you can use it in moderate to dark conditions and see something where others will just give you a black picture.
Why don't you order it at Amazon? - there you can try it out for a almost month before deciding if it is good enough for you and sending it back or not.

I've never had an iPhone so can't be truly impartial but my SGS2 seems like one of the better mobiles to handle darker lit areas. Yeah, it has a little of the usual traits for this sort of kit - understandable given that it is a phone after all - but it's certainly no slouch when the lights go down.
My personal experience seems to be backed up by a lot of the reviews online though, as you say, not many of them actually print sample night/dark photos to prove it!
If you search on Eurodroid for "Samsung Galaxy S II review: Camera and video samples" you'll find an example shot and comment. That's just one so hardly fully representative but it's something to start with!.
edit: I knew I'd seen it somewhere - there's a gallery of 14 pictures taken in varying light conditions comparing the SGS2 and the Arc over on the android50 site. Search for "Camera showdown: Samsung Galaxy S II versus Xperia arc". Looks like the exact thing you need to help make your choice!
(I'd link you directly but I'm still under my "no links initially for noobs" ruling )

Found the article article over at android50( http://www.android50.com/Topic/view/id-3208),....just be aware of the pink haze in this camera. Can really spoil photo's in certain lights. My first SGS2 did not have this fault so assume its a hardware manufacturing issue. Would have taken phone back but it such a good phone so far that i can live with the odd shot looking pinkish in middle....

Not much camera improvement ...?

I was hoping to have a better camera overall, but according to this
http://www.galaxys2x.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-camera-samples-revealed-compared-to-galaxy-s2-photos/
the aperture of the S3 is only 2.6 while HOX has the best aperture of 2.0.
The only improved ofer the S2 (2.65) but such a tiny amount... I wonder why.
Thats disappointing. Hopefully there are great optics.
I understand that aperture involves the amount of light only but I am not seeing much info to determine that the camera is much better.

Well over the SGS2 there is hardly any shutter lag. It takes it almost instantly so less blurry pictures.
Honestly, my HOX doesn't take that great of pictures anyways. The One S barely does better. These phones aren't SLR replacers.

The speed of the photos doesnt mean quality and we arent talking about SLR replacers but good camera phones. The 4s takes great photos, and from what I have seen the HTC One phones do as well, and I assume its because of the camera hardware.
You would think Samsung, going for the BEST phone on the market, would also consider the camera too.
I will be getting the s3 when it comes out but this just makes me consider more things too.
(If the Xperia GX is released around the same time, I would trade the s3 for it)
OMG these numbers and decimals mean nothing. There are actual photos and comparisons between the One X and S III. They said my clunker of a car was rated 40mph too, but the real world doesn't move at the speed of spec sheets.
GSMarena did a test that shows the S3 is better than the HTC. The sensor in the S3 is better than the One X or S2, as is the software.

I've seen comparison shots, and honestly the SGS3 outperformed the SGS2 in a lot of instances. They maybe subjective. Who knows. All I know is that it does a good job and it gets the job done well.
Here's the comparisons to the 4S as well. The 4S is a tiny bit better, and SGS3's video recording beats the SGS2, 4S and HOX.
http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-vs-Apple-iPhone-4S_id3038/page/3
There are perks, there is no phone camera on android or apple that has all the perks and benefits.
Also feel free to compare all phone cameras to each other using this tool:
http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=4238&idPhone2=3621&idPhone3=4212
I already have the 4S, SGS2 and SGS3 set up for you on there. If the SGS3 takes either pictures as good or better than a SGS2 with a butter shutter then that is improvement in my book.

I dont see why the S3 wouldnt outperform the S2. Im not saying its not a better camera than the s2, but not by much. And I dont see why the s3 wouldnt blow the 4s, a dated phone, out of the water as well. But thats not the case
as far as the GSMarena comparison shots - not too applicable since the lighting was different in them. Obviously the shot by the s3 of the building in a sunny environment looks better than the HTC in a seemingly overcast environment
The windmill and low light tests favour the HTC as well
People really do get hung-up on the stupidest things. NO phone is that great for pictures, the S3 is one of the best, thats quite enough. Who cares about the iPhone? Most isheep take pictures and ruin them with instagram anyway so what does it matter? If you want the 5% better pictures the iPhone might take in some situations go buy one.
What matters is that the S3 takes sharp images and uses low amounts of post processing. Any further shortcomings can be fixed easily with a photo editor. the HOX takes somewhat blurry images that have way to much post processing, this is much harder to correct, if it can be at all.
I have seen plenty of bad pictures taken with the iP4s.

I did not post the GSMarena screen shots to you, I posted the 4S and SGS3 taking photos the same day and same time.
The GSMArena once I posted to you were them taking pictures of charts in a controlled environment so all the phones had the same exposure. The contrast in the pictures of the charts has the 4S producing blacks like dark black-reds while the SGS3 is pretty dark.
It seems you're set on your opinion on the matter though so cheers to you.
In some of the S3 pictures on the GSMarena S3 v iP4s test its clear the lens is dirty. Inconsistent focus within the same picture indicated a dirty lens.

On top of that the HOX has a lot of noise in its photos. I've taken photos of my dogs with it and it had some noise noticeable on their brown fur.

I dont see how I am getting hung up on anything stupid, I am having a discussion about a feature of the phone...
No phone is great for pictures? I have taken some great photos with my 5mp Atrix. Phones can take some great photos, thats a fact. Thats not the discussion though.
You shouldnt have to use a photo editor to fix the photos.
I have seen plenty of bad pictures taken on Canon 60d's as well, thats not the point.

for the GSM arena comments, I was referring to the other post, not yours. The comparisons you posted were very good. My issue is that, I see an almost equal amount of instances where the 4s is better in some and the s3 is better in others... which should not be the case. The s3 should be much better.
I wonder if this just speaks about how much better the i5 photos will be too.
The purpose of a lot of the camera phones now, and the reason they are trying to make the better and better, is to replace the entry level point and shoot cameras on the market. The phone companies are doing a great job of this attempt so far. So I highly disagree with people saying phones take bad photos.

Again, I have set this up for you to compare the HOX and SGS3. It's already scaled out for you to take a look at the picture not so zoomed in. look over teh lady's face and notice the noise coming from the HOX. This is a controlled environment with controlled lighting.

What do you mean what I see and what I'm talking about?
Look at anything that you or other people have posted to SEE.
And what I am talking about is SIMPLE ... This phone is supposed to be the BEST OF THE BEST as far as I take it.. and its NOT. Now I am very impressed by its other hardware and specs but how can anyone HONESTLY argue with me and say that they are very pleased with the advancements they have made in the camera. Its simply NOT TRUE that there are major advancements in photo quality.

So, you want the S3 to be the best at everything all the time? Not going to happen. No device is ever the best at everything. The S3 has the best video, that's proven, the stills are very good to excellent for a phone and the software allows for the most features of any phone. Is that not good enough?
Ive seen pictures from a Nokia N95 8GB that beats all of the pictures from any phone out right now. Half of it is luck, phones have strengths and weaknesses, lets also not forget that software updates can improve image quality. More mature devices have an advantage in that regard.

That was not your initial point...
"I was hoping to have a better or on par camera s the HTC One, which takes great photos, but according to this"
That was your initial point from the OP and this thread and I've proved that it is at least on par with the One and even the 4S where both went back and forth and have advantages and disadvantages over one another.
My only suggestions is if a camera is really important for you then get the next Sony Android phones with the S4 CPU and 12MP cameras that are going to come out in a few months. That's the only solution I think that will make you happy and satisfied.

It's not quite zoomed in if you scale it to 2MP. That would be the actual size if the image was taking up your full monitor.
Personally for me, if I don't have to hold absolutely still for 3 seconds to take a good picture as compared to my SGS2 Skyrocket then I think that is a good improvement for me. I've tried to take many pictures that turned out a little blurry. To me the shutter matters just as much as the image quality as it makes taking photos better.
Here is something else I will share with you:
http://mobile-review.com/review/samsung-galaxy-s3-fl-en.shtml
They have tons of comparison shots with the SGS2 and SGS3.
And this is what I was talking about where I saw the SGS3 outperform the SGS2 in certain scenarios.
SGS2:
http://mobile-review.com/review/image/samsung/galaxy-s3-fl/photo/s2-vs-s3/s2-02.jpg
SGS3:
http://mobile-review.com/review/image/samsung/galaxy-s3-fl/photo/s2-vs-s3/s3-02.jpg
From all the other shots, if I can describe it, the SGS2 kind of has a matte thin film look over its photos while the SGS3 does not. The SGS3 also IMO has better coloring and managed to grab sharper images possibly due to the shutter being better. All in all I am impressed with the SGS3's camera but I didn't have such high expectations for it in the first place.

I agree with you 100% on this. Anyone who says "who cares about the camera on a phone? if you want real pictures, buy a real camera" is stuck in 2005 and needs a punch to the face.
Camera phone technology has progressed to the point that they are can and SHOULD replace standalone point and shoot cameras. That makes camera quality one of the most important features of a phone for many people.
They ARE as good as many point and shoot cams, i had a cheap Fujifilm 12MP unit that took worse pics than my S2 for the most part, but if you spend a bit more then a phone cant compete. However good the sensor and software is they wont have as good lenses, even the ones with premium lenses. The phones are just too thin, they also wont have optical zooms or strong flashes.
The early S3 images we have seen are better than the One X, its not really that close. They largely match the iP4s and the S3 has better video than anyone. Remember this is early software as well, things will get better.

The S3 is better there, although i dont expect you to see it. Firstly the pictures arent taken at the same angle, and the S3 has more distances to focus on from its angle. The HTC has far more post processing errors in its picture, far more noise, less real detail. I notice the lighting is different as well, due to the angle. Whatever point you were trying to prove, you failed.

Hang on the camera looks poor....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30COabYrr64
The colours are too saturated, the camera wobbles and skips just as much and the mic sounds poor compared.
Surely a software issue?
Have no clue what cnet is trying to do there but the actual quality is much better.
Sound recording is really impressive and the OIS is working well too as one can see in the following videos from xsever.

Maybe some software related issues? Like allways when new phone comes out...

Yeh cnet confirm the camera being overhyped in the review.
Good in low light, not as good in day time.
I really don't trust cnet. I seen the video and it looks like they were favoring the iphone 5. They went to 4 solo shots of the iphone 5 while they only had 2 for the lumia. I'll just have to wait on xserver to test it because his trying his best to provide everyone with a fair review.

Here are direct photo comparisons between different phones and the Lumia 920. The is part of a CNET review for the US version in their US office, which is more favorable of the camera.
http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57...0-camera-vs-htc-windows-phone-8x-vs-iphone-5/
And more direct comparison picks from Slashgear
http://www.slashgear.com/nokia-lumia-920-pureview-camera-hands-on-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-01255193/
Frankly I can't decide whether this camera is good or bad based on these pictures. It wins some, but not by much. It can lose pretty bad though, especially with how unsharp and vague a lot of images look. It's not the winner Nokia was touting. Indoor shots are better in some instances, worse in others. Night shots are "brighter" but not necessarily better. I can edit the photos of a competing phone by turning up the gamma and get close to the same thing that Nokia produces. The smooth video also isn't as great as I once thought. It makes me nauseous, and details are still very lacking even if there isn't any major instances of blur.
The reviews on the phone are contradicting. The verge review shows great pictures, much better than cnet's or slashgears and their unit is not even on final software. The camera performance just doesn't seem consistant.
Well I'll judge myself when I get mine next week.
It seems to me Nokia focused too much on low light photos because the day time photos lack detail.
I added many more videos with different settings here: http://forums.wpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=200158
A Nokia French community member has confirmed on Twitter that there will be an camera update soon.
Actually, I'm very happy with my phone anyway

Welcome to mobile cameras, they all throw pixel count at you when what they really need are better sensors. I have NEVER had a phone camera take pictures that didn't have tons of noise and look like complete **** on a decent monitor. In my experience thus far, this camera is no different than others I've seen.

Have been playing with the camera all day today. Compared to iphone5 this shows lot of noise especially in low light. When cmpared to gs3, noise is marginally higher in low light photos. Under good light conditions, this seems to produce most faithful color reproduction.
Just my observation
Yea, I just compared gsiii and DNA cameras, I think gsiii is better most of the time, but not in color reproduction. But honestly, they are both awful.

I just downloaded camera 360 from the market, and its so much better than the stock camera.
I went downtown Detroit last night after Dinner, and even though I said that the S3 Camera is better, I'll retract my statement (different thread) after taking some low lights pics. The Low Light Pics on my S3 looked horrible.....but was pleasantly surprised by this camera. I attached a few pictures to show that the pics in low light actually look pretty damn good, especially since it was taken with a Phone, and I was a bit tipsy after drinking too much at Dinner (hands weren't exactly steady).

Damn... I was going to pick up that phone today but after seeing these pics I don't think I am. A good camera is very important to me, maybe I'll get the Lumia 920 instead...
Well, what do you expect from a phone's camera? Whatever the camera's hardware is, if 90% of its settings are controlled automatically, the result is most probably going to suck. In a darker scene, this phone's software may want to bump the ISO higher than another phone's software, hence this noise and lack of detail. But anyway, a different camera app and you knowing how to use it will most probably show better results.
For me, a cellphone's camera is not much more than a barcode scanner.
Exactly. Phone cameras will always suck compared to a quality Point&Shoot. Smaller sensor, few manual settings, and software made by phone manufacturers, not Canon/Nikon. It's fine for a decent landscape shot or portrait on a sunny day but some people just have ridiculous expectations.
People spend thousands of dollars on camera equipment that works well in low light or for fast action. Maybe the iPhone 5 is marginally better than this, but I've played with my family's new iPhones and IMO the camera is still just a phone camera. If I wanted to take a good picture I'd bring something else.
Some comparisons
Some people didn't like my review of the DNA saying that I was too harsh on the 1080p 440ppi display. How could it possibly be worse than the 720p S3 panel? Well, I think these will speak for themselves:
First a short video shot by an iPhone 4S...DNA vs S3 playing Underworld Awakening. It's a bit hard to show how much the S3 dominates because it's a video of video playback, but the most accurate part is when Selene and Michael are kissing. You can see the skin tone is MUCH better:
http://db.tt/Z597Hcuc
Then the friend with the iPhone 4S and I went out and took some shots. He's taller than me, so the angles are a bit off, but you get the idea. 4S is on the left, DNA on the right:

http://db.tt/9sHcE6yO

http://db.tt/G3pabYog
As you can clearly see, the DNA gets smoked when it comes to color and brightness. Either I have a bad panel or sensor or this camera/video playback is just simply inferior right out the box.

Don't forget-I was NOT really holding the camera steady (Tipsy), but my spouse had my S3 and the DNA's pics actually look better in those low-light shots than on the S3. I need to go to the Conservatory and take some daylight shots of all the tropical plants. THAT'S where I usually take my dSLR and even when I took the S3 there, the pics came out great, popping colors, etc.... Let's see how the DNA can handle those.
The difference is amazing!!!

I just downloaded the Camera 360 Ultimate from the Play Store and the difference is very, VERY noticeable. EVERY DNA owner needs to switch immediately. It's COMPLETELY a software issue. I'll be testing other camera apps right now, but this was a drastic improvement!!!

On my monitor those pictures look absolutely horrible, grainy and pixely. Are you using a stock camera or a 3rd party one?

Well no camera will ever be like buying a nikon but getting normal point&shoot quality pics isn't much to ask for, nokias are able to achieve it, seems to be just a part of the phone being skimped on. Nothing to stop me frfom buyin though, they are "good enough"

Dude, something is definitely wrong with your lens. Half those pictures look flat out BLURRY. There are a bevy of example shots from the DNA, just google some and take a look. I'd upload some of my own if it werent for the fact they're already out there. Those pictures you took look like something my 2001 blackberry pearl took.

Xperia 5 II cam & pro cam vs OP6 cam & gcam, no tinkering

Sony Xperia 5 II:
* standard camera, no tinkering
* pro camera, auto mode
* pro camera, P mode with HDR, no other tinkering
Oneplus 6:
* standard camera
* Marco's GCam 6.1 MJL v3.7 Miniflex, day mode, AWB off, no other tinkering
(Sorry for the un-professionality of the shots and the general mess.)
I'm finding the Xperia 5II camera and pro camera... underwhelming to say the least. I'm sure that pro camera, used by people who are used to more complex non-smartphone cameras can give great photos, but to less camera-savvy people like me the results are... terrible. Coming from a great gcam port that basically performed perfectly right out of the box (big kudos to Marco's amazing work), I find it pretty disappointing to see this.
I can only hope that a good gcam port comes out fast.
(The Xperia otherwise is a pretty darn good phone imho, aside from some minor annoying things that hopefully will be improved/fixed in next updates.)
(x-posted from my thread on r/SonyXperia)
I don't understand why everyone is praising the xperia cameras. They are just not as good as many other phones. I come from an s10 plus and pictures were just better on the s10, especially in low light. My real issue is that there is NO way to take 16:9 video with manual focus (or even tap to focus) on either the simple camera app or the pro: The simple camera doesn't have manual focus and the pro is locked at 21:9 for some reason... This is simple functionality, yet Sony in their all "camera wisdom" couldn't provide it on any of their apps....
I agree that a good (or at least functional) gcam port is our only hope (as is for any xperia device). Sony is full of marketing BS on every xperia release about their cameras and somehow they always manage to be underwhelming and a few generations behind.

I wasn't talking about colors, colors are subjective and everyone has different taste. Noise however, isn't. You can zoom on both pictures and see that the 5 ii has more noise and "blurriness" compared to the oneplus. And this has been a tradition with xperia phones as long as I remember. Always a few generations behind on image clarity. I don't think anyone likes noise on their pictures... Professional reviews are misleading, since they are usually done in good (or even professional) lighting on a stand, so they are not representative of real life. If you are not a ...tourist, most of your pictures will be indoors and/or in random lighting scenarios with auto settings, on your hand, for a fast and easy picture. Xperia phones produce the worst results in those real life scenarios every time. If you want to take pictures on a stand, after tinkering with settings for the best results, you should be using a DSLR not a phone imo.

I've just compared both standard photos.
IMHO
* Xperia colors are more natural (more red/blue, OnePlus has more green)
* I can see more noise on OnePlus and more sharp edges, seems a bit artificial
* Xperia photo is less sharp/more soft, especially in the background. Not sure but it may be related with bigger sensor and lower DoF
Are both photos were taken on the same day/the same time ? The posters in background are different
I have both the 7pro and the 5ii and the 5ii is way more satisfying with photos for me, my experience is completely the opposite. I will say the biggest downside is consistency with the sony camera, but when it takes a great shot it is significantly more satisfying than a lucky 7pro shot and it should be since the sensor is better.

I'm not sure what photos you've been looking at but the Xperia is completely smooth compared to the OnePlus. Yes, the Xperia is also a bit softer because of the shallower DoF and because of less aggressive sharpening which Sony is known to do. But based on those photos I'd take the Sony any day.
I have to say that coming from OnePlus 6 into Sony Xperia 5 II I totally agree that the camera in standard mode the OnePlus performs better.. but the manual mode in the Sony Xperia if you know about photography it definitely out performs the OnePlus 6.. I'll recommend reducing the brightness in the standard mode and you will see a better quality pic in the Sony Xperia.

Same day, same time, around 10 minutes difference I think? What's the difference you're seeing? The Xperia makes everything much more pink-ish, if that's what you're referring to. Imho from how the light was irl the gcam got the most accurate colours, my room does have a kinda "washed out" light when it's cloudy and the lights are off.
Also why would I lie? I got accused of lying and about the irl colors on the Xperia reddit thread ("do you have green light? " when these were made without turning the light on...), now you're saying the background looks different... What would I even gain by lying, I'm not a pro, I don't get money, I'm not even a reviewer, just a rando posting a simple comparison of what I saw and instead I got insulted and accused of lying... for simply stating my opinion? Wtf. I just wanted to make a comparison before selling my old OP6, that's all. I did the comparison, I sold the op6, I'm happy with the Xperia, I'm just disappointed by the camera. Simple camera app is too simple, the Pro one is too complex and even after days of watching tutorials I can manage to get decent pictures only outdoors with a good light... which might be great for a photographer - but if I was a photographer I would use an actual camera tbh -, but for normal real life situations in which you don't have time to configure everything (especially if you want to take pictures of animals - i.e. my cats) and the light 90% of the times is not perfect... the Xperia performed worse imho.
EDIT: btw here's your proof. Luckily I sent the pics via Bluetooth to the new phone before selling the old one.

Apologies, I just took these background pictures as different, but its the same picture presuming different time.
My mistake.
As an avid photographer with a nice collection of bodies and lenses, I will say that I'm pleased with the pictures from the 5 II. I picked one up a few weeks ago to replace my P30 Pro. I definitely get better pictures from the Pro app than the Standard camera app. But, since I have a Sony ILC, I like the familiar interface, and you can learn to get good pictures from it quickly.

I'm coming from an OP6 and couldn't agree with you more. The 5ii auto focus on objects less than 6ft away is unbelievably bad. The detail in the 5ii pics are underwhelming compared to the OP6 GCAM.
I've decided to take my OP6 with me when I know I'm going to be taking pics.
Though it's off topic I totally regret getting the 5ii and could happily go back to my OP6. Gonna sell 5ii and get the next OnePlus when it comes out.

Well, you are not pro camera user. If you had any Sony DSLR you would know. Everything is in manual mode, not auto mode. The same situation is on Sony phones. I have XPERIA 1 II and after many updates photos from Camera app auto mode is much better, but still not good as iPhone 12 Pro Max auto mode. When I use Program Auto or Manual Exposure in Photo Pro and adjust setting result is different. Photos are much better taken with XPERIA 1 II. So, why did you buy XPERIA 5 II if you are not pro camera user? Sony philosophy is if you want to take full advantage from sensor and camera, use Photo Pro app : Auto mode for social networks, Program Auto if you are begginer, Shutter Priority for fast moving objects and Manual Exposure if you are camera pro user. Memory Recall is just for most used settings values and modes.
I've actually been pleased with low light photo quality of the standard camera app. Very close to my P30 Pro.
Unfortunately I completely agree that OP somehow delivers better photos than overhyped, much more expensive Xperia 5 II. I've got my Xperia 5 II just few days ago (didn't see the warning "For Pro Photographers only" on the box or anywhere else). Compared to my "old" Pixel 4, I'm disappointed so far. I clearly see that Pixel makes better pictures with zero efforts in all situations regardless of shakeness of my hands and photo skills. Certainly Xperia has focusing issues in some situations. I struggled to focus on objects with Xperia whereas I didn't with Pixel 4 at the same time. Xperia photos look soft / less sharp, blurry in not ideal conditions, hit or miss experience damn to often, horrible selfie camera etc. Going to spend some time with this phone (one month or so), give Xperia a chance to shine and then decide what to do. Thankfully I didn't sell my Pixel 4 yet...
It's all subjective, but to me the Xperia wins here. To my eyes the exposure is better, the white balance is better, the colors are more natural and overall it has a more realistic rendition (not overly sharpened). And the subtle bokeh its larger sensor gets is just icing on the cake.
Sony goes for naturalistic processing which I appreciate. People used to Samsung's bold processing might be let down initially.
u bought a phone has camera, not a camera which calls
A. With the plethora of resources I don't know why anyone would buy a Sony Xperia and be surprised at what they get. I wasn't. I looked at a lot of YouTube videos about Sony Xperias.
B. "U bought a phone has camera, not a camera which calls." I think I understand what you're saying but I'm not sure you're qualified to say what anyone bought except yourself. I was late to phones because I'm quite deaf and don't do phone calls but I'm also old and got tired of toting cameras and lens. I had a Pixel that took great photos and then a Huawei P30 that also took great photos but I was missing taking photos. I'm sure the phone was having fun but I wasn't. Their "pro" mode sucked. For example, in pro mode, their little white icons disappeared when I was taking photos on the white sand of the beach at Huatulco or the white stone pavement in Oaxaca. Now, I enjoy taking photos again with my Xperia.
C. If you want AI to take photos for you, don't get a Sony Xperia. If you actually enjoy photography, you might enjoy having a Sony Xperia. This is a Sony Xperia forum so I don't mind posting my opinion but I am in no way denigrating those who enjoy iPhones or Pixels or Pocos. Choices are great.

i was surperised that someone really reply like i offend anyone. However, i am more pro sony than oneplus(even i had oneplus 1). Now i am holding Xperia5ii which i am satisfied the most in any android phone(sizewise Iphone12&13mini is better).
i personally buy this phone for its size which onehand controls fine. But more than that I prefer unlock the bootloader and put aosp roms instead of offical that drains the battery fast and laggy some how. So i may not buy this phone for the photos but can anyone buy this phone for other reasons?i dont think i am qualified to say the reason what anyone buys neither you are. But i think forum is a free place for any ideas and any opinions i assume. Good day with ur xperia although we love xperia for different reasons.

General Reviews

A few hands-on reviews are out. The consensus is decidedly mediocre. Disappointingly so.
Some common themes: battery life not great, device runs hot, and surprising to me, the camera in basic auto mode is really not that great. Causing me to rethink my pre-order.

count me in too on questioning my pre order. not sure what i'm going to do but leaning towards cancelling.
Last review I will post as they are all consistent:
My requirements are a headphone jack and micro SD storage. So I'm stuck as no other premium phone offers both. My only other option is a Moto G, I'm not inclined to move that far down the performance ladder.
The reviews got me thinking whether the Xperia 5 III may be a better choice. In principle, the screen should be less demanding on the same sized battery... Other downside is the lack of ToF sensor which I'm still not sure how much it downgrades the image quality of the otherwise same camera setup.
I mainly want this as my pocket camera. I find the cnet review as promising. He was impressed by the cameras, all of them. With any smartphone camera, imo you should only use the telephoto cameras outdoors in good light. He got some nice images with all 4 focal lengths of the camera. I'm now confident I can get some nice photos with the telephoto lenses, especially when using the pro camera app and choosing ISO and shutter speed. as far as the cnet review he disliked the price and the battery life. But he had a pre production unit and battery life is the last thing addressed usually with new software and devices. I'm kind of excited again.

they reject the phones night mode. Just go into the manual mode and do an exposure adjustment according to the histogram. Or just adjust the shutter speed and iso yourself and you should get a fantastic picture. Takes literally 7-8 seconds. And then you'll have the settings ready to go to take as many pictures as you want at the concert.

I haven't cancelled my pre order (yet). i can live with only using the main camera in low light. at f1.7 the photos should be good and the reviews so far seem to support that.
from this review all i can say is as long as you know how to use the camera, all photos should look good. on my xperia 1 ii i would almost always shoot in program mode and would just keep the iso at 100 and occasionally raise it to 320. in this review he seems to be doing the same thing. love the histogram on screen, so helpful.

I used a 1 Ii for quite some time and was able to get great pictures in program mode by just fiddling with the exposure compensation while looking at the histogram. Takes like 5 seconds and you've got a great picture. I guessing the 3 will take very similar pictures.

You can always play with it for a few days and re-sell it for the same price as an "open box" product. It will certainly work if you live in the country where Sony doesn't sell phones officially and you have to import your device.

I bought LG V60 ThinQ for around $350 (4 times cheaper than Xperia!) for exactly the same reasons. Yes, it doesn't look as sexy as Xperia 1 III but it has plenty of power (more than I actually need), great battery life, best in business sound, not getting hot as hell etc.
It's all theory. To get any good night shot on Xperia 1 III you'll have to use stand and bluetooth shutter button. I used to had Xperia 1 II / 5 II and taking night photos with Xperia handheld was impossible. Don't think that Xperia 1 III is different.

I used a 1 Ii for quite some time and was able to get great pictures in program mode by just fiddling with the exposure compensation while looking at the histogram. Takes like 5 seconds and you've got a great picture. I guessing the 3 will take very similar pictures.

Too much effort for $1300 smartphone to my opinion.
Not a complete review but I found this video entertaining.
btw, I decided to not cancel my pre order. B&H says I will have 30 days to return. I expect it will be my main camera/phone for at least a year.
Waiting on my pre order to arrive soon.
I really like my 1II and look foresees to the III. The only other phone that gets me excited is the Pixel 6 (if it doesn't have a curved screen)
Can't ever go Chinese as I need updates decently on schedule. Samsung has dropped prices a bit but no sd card and the same cameras and worse screen...
Their ultra is too heavy for comfortable one hand usage
I bailed on the Experia and cancelled my order with B&H. Going to get the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. No headphone jack and no sd storage slot, but I couldn't get comfortable with the Experia reviews I was reading, particularly the camera.
I had the ultra also. Traded it in while it was still worth a lot. The weight and one handed use was not my favorite and its hard to get a glass screen protector that works with the ultrasonic finger print reader. It didn't have enough memory and with no sd card I was forced to stream music.
But it takes great pics.

The same. Really kept my finger on pre-order button for a week but after numerous rather underwhelming camera performance reviews decided to buy nearly 3 times cheaper Galaxy S21.
