Gmail is acting kind of funky on this phone...
Every now and then Ill take a look at the Gmail account on my phone and Ill see:
Inbox (1)
But all my emails have been marked read on the phone. So Ill log in on a desktop, and see that one of my e-mails is unread, even though I just marked it read on my phone.
Sometimes Ill get a zero unread count in my app, login on a desktop and see that Ive got 3 or more that were never marked read.
Gmail used to be the best email experience out there on a mobile device, in my opinion. But its now gotten to the point where this bug plagues just about every email I receive.
Am I the only one? Is there even any action I take to prevent this?
Sounds like a syncing issue. Everything works fine for me. Are you on a custom ROM?
Stock rooted.
I seem to remember having the same issue on my G1 and the myTouch Slide, though not to this gravity. I guess it must have something to do with my account itself, but I would really hope not. Starting over with a new Gmail isnt the most elegant solution...
I'm getting this today too. Frustrating.
my wife's Vibrant can't even sync with gmail since yesterday
I work for a government organization that uses android phones to sync with exchange. I currently have a customer with a Thunderbolt who has synced the mail, contacts, and calendar to exchange. The issue I'm having trouble resolving is that current month appointments sync fine, however anything older than a month, will only show reoccurring appointments. The customer claims they were there before, however I cannot confirm this. Anyone know of issues with exchange and this phone that would cause this problem. I'm an avid android user myself, however I'm not familiar with all the issues related to this phone.

We've used HTC THunderbolt and HTC Droid Incredible 2 phones with exchange 2003 and 2010. It seems that there's a couple serious bugs in HTC's implementation of their calendar/task sync. The main problem we see is that appointments and tasks don't get updated once they're initially synced.
I've spoken to HTC (who is useless) and VZ doesn't seem to understand the issue. Frustrating.
THe touchdown application works, but I personally find it to be clunky.
Sorry that I don't have better news for you. Please keep this thread updated should you find a solution!!
The sync itself seems to work fine, it will update the calendar with new appointments via push messages. The problem is though old appointments drop unless they are reoccurring. Using a third part app from the market may not necessarily work for our customers since their accounts are business accounts, that the organization pays for.

Good to hear that sync is working better for you than it is for us. I didn't mean to imply that you should use a third party service. I'm suggesting sticking with exchange but using Touchdown on the handheld to get the calendar items.
From memory, I think there might be a setting on the Thunderbolt to specify how long in the past calendar items show for. I think it's under sync settings (but I don't have a device to check it on).
I saw a setting for mailbox retention but not for the calendar. Touchdown would be fine except its a payed app. The free version is only a 30 day trial. I tried the normal remove and re-add account, this works 99% of the time on other android phones, but no joy. I have a feeling there is something in Android that limits the amount of past appointments, I just can't find any documentation on it.
I am using the S Planner and have recently upgraded to 4.1.1 Earlier on ICS when I used to enter the Add Event full settings (on the quick add event it never came though) anyway I used to add an event and the default 5 Mins Notification Reminder used to place itself in the Event on my Calendar.. However Since the upgrade I need to manually click on the + sign next to the reminder.. Why is this so? Is there a work around? I am using the local 'My Calendar' calendar in the S Planner.. I have synced it to my email calendar as well but I have almost no calendar entries on my email.. Just a few work related ones..
Is there anyway for it to automatically add a 5 mins before notification reminder on all the events I create in the local My Calendar in the S Planner? It is quite a pain as I seem to be missing calendar entries since I forgot to add the reminder manually..
Please Help me out! Thanks in Advance!
It is so sad to see nobody is bothered with this problem, because this guy's post is unanswered for almost a month. Is nobody using reminders? I just don't understand. Dumbest stupid failure of the new firmware which urges you to seek for calendar replacement app.
Ok enough emotions. I am also suffering from this. Searched here and there all over. Nobody cares. Nobody even seem to notice this perfect calendar upgrade.
Does it make sence to write to Samsung?

Posted this issue even earlier in another thread. Same no reaction. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33900623&postcount=2112
Haha I gave up on the Stock rom and have since moved onto Cyanogen Mod 10.. I don't have NFC, WIFI Direct, Micro SD Card recognition, or any of the motion features from Samsung like Swipe to Capture a screenshot or Direct call from Contact/Message but I have 4.1.2 and a smoother phone and a slightly better battery life.. I am thinking of selling the S3 and buying the Nexus 4! Since the Jellybean upgrade was absolutely rubbish on the S3!
Why on earth this all is so so sad? Why do we need to deal with such shameful faults of the OS of one of the most expensive smartphones in 21st century. The level of this bug or problem reminds me of Windows 3.1 times...
Almost one month later and no solution to this. Such a simple thing to fix but a very annoying bug to deal with. I will be finding a different calendar.

use google calendar

I found a different solution to this! But it will only apply if you use your email address as your default calendar and don't use the local "My Calendar".. Go to your Calendar settings in your Web browser and activate the default reminder time to whatever you want.. Also ensure on your phone that your Calendar is set to Sync with your gmail account on which your calendar entries exist.. Automatically the default reminder time gets placed into your newly set calendar entry without you manually having to do so..
I read what I wrote and its probably a bit confusing but ill be glad to help anyone out if they haven't quite understood! Also sorry I couldn't explain better as I am in a bit of a rush now..
I tried this, but it didn't seem to make any difference on my phone. Any time I make an appointment on my phone it still defaults to no reminder.

Are you sure when you add an Event/Task it shows your gmail address? rather than "My Calendar"?
In addition to that.. You could also go into your settings in the S Planner and then the option Calendars and un-select "My Calendar" and all other calendars you are not using except the one synced with gmail..
Found a solution
Hey,
I found a workaround : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/tutorial-how-to-disable-s-planner-t3131379
Does anyone else experience broken Google Reminders? I figure that the problem is that the app is busted, and that it has nothing to do with this phone. Is that right? Just wanted to double check.
So the solution should be to look for an alternative app, right?
Deleted
To be more specific, the location-based reminders are completely busted. I recently made a couple reminders (while I was out in the city) for when I got to work, and both of them promptly went off when I got home. I was so mad...
The time-based reminders seem to be working fine though. If I set a reminder to go off at a certain time, that is.
Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?
Even the most experienced sometimes miss things.

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.
If it was not, then it is a shame I couldn't help.
But as a response to your comment: No. I don't think people here are idiots. I just think you are one.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. If you still ask people if they have done so, you obviously think we are idiots, since you ask a question that has already been answered. Grow up please.
Edit: Here let me quote it for you:
I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find.

Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
