3G/H+ Signal randomly dropping - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have UK SGS II and I am on the bell netowrk in Canada and I am finding that the 3G/H+ signal randomly drops and I lose connection every now and then. I am always in aread with strong reception as well. Any possible solutions?
Thank you

anyone have any ideas
?

I have the same but it doesn't drop anything, in area's where there is H+ coverage it will show H+ otherwise it just shows 3G.
Maybe you want to enable 3G only on your device so it won't switch between all the time.

I have the same problem here in Argentina. It seems that one of our local operators does not support the 3G/HSDPA of this phone (maybe because it is from europe ? ). Did you try to use the browser and surf the internet? I doesn't work here. Strange, because for 3G we use the 850Mhz spectrum.
What I noticed is that the 3G/H icon at the top is constantly changing from 3G to H and viceversa, even if I stay in the same location...

Do you know how to set it in 3G only so that it won't switch to H+ ??
Thanks!

nevermind!!
this has been resolved. I had to manually change the APN settings.
thanks!

[Q] Tmobile (UK) Using Orange Network......

So Im sure any of you on Tmo UK will be aware of this new option they've given us whereby you can opt-in to use the orange networks if you lose reception from Tmobile........
I thought to myself "yeah...... why not..... cant hurt"
Seeing as I barely get a 3G / HSDPA signal where I live I thought that perhaps it might kick into "orange mode" and give me some 3G action.... (sadly it doesnt)...
Anyway since I opted in Ive noticed that sometimes when Im on the Tmo/Orange signal, the "Edge" (E) symbol is displayed in my taskbar......
Its definitely a lot faster than GPRS but doesnt seem to be as quick as HSDPA, I thought that perhaps it was there in place of the 3G symbol but sometimes that will appear too.....
I thought "Edge" was only available in the US.....
Does Orange have some kind of in between speed that I was previously unaware of??

I don't know it fore sure, but France Telecom (Group holder of Orange) have invest a lot in UMTS maybe it's that you got.

edge
3g
H
in order of speed, edge has been used in the uk for years
So you texted Yes to 2121 as well.. I honestly cannot spot any difference, still haven't gotten Orange coverage yet

lol you probably wont need it in London........
coverage is poor out here in the sticks though..........
it perhaps won't auto switch networks, because it knows t mo is the preferred network, unless there is no t mo reception at all.
you maybe need to add the orange network as a preferred network
settings menu all settings personal phone network tab set networks let's you set the preferred order and such, so if you find yourself in an orange dominant area move orange above tmo in the list.

OK I'm generally a proud Londoner (Not a bad thing lol).. But sometimes I've been in the middle of Oxford Street and notice I have no reception, London isn't a great place for good reception is some areas, you get better reception in residential areas then main high streets
@sam...
Mine seems to switch even when I have a reasonable amount of signal.
9 times out of 10 today when I looked at my phone I had the roaming and edge symbols sitting in my taskbar....
I generally never struggle for basic network coverage so I was surprised at how often I'm on orange signal...
@don..
Yeah I guess there are plenty of things that could hamper you're signal...
Maybe it's that famous london smog I've heard so much about

Battery Drain
I've also just signed up to this as I get poor signal thru T-Mobile when in some buildings whilst at work.
Problem is that I've noticed a significant drain in battery since subscribing presumably as the phone is always comparing signal strength of both Tmo and Orange and switching between the two periodically.
Is there a way to change carrier manually through some form of *#*# dial code rather than to switch to manual and select the desired network as this takes a while? I don't seem to have the option to set my preferred networks as a previous poster mentioned.
I've had mixed experience with this - make sure your sense and activesync settings are set to NOT download data when roaming - the Orange/T-mobile thing calls itself roaming and I kept getting password incorrect responses from gmail on activesync, I assume because it was trying to access the servers from different IP addresses rapidly. You do not get 3G etc from Orange - your data comes over t-mobile, you just roaming onto the Orange network when there is no signal on t-mobile, so it should give you better call coverage, but for data switch off roaming so it only tries to access data when on t-mobile.

[Q] 2 questions on 3G/H

hi!
i am using a tmous hd2 with the stock 2.13 rom and the recently released 2.15 radio. up till now i havent really bothered using packet data on my phone because i am a wifi guy... only recently did i start using packet data frequently...
i noticed two things out of place:
1) for some reason i have never seen hspa service on my phone. my operator runs a 3.6mbps dl 2mbps ul hspa services. whenever i switch to 3g and connect data, i always get a 3G written over the signal bars. and i have never seen speeds over 42kB/s (~384kbps) in several months of use. i have full signal strength in both 3g and 2g. if i am running 2g, then i get an E as expected over the signal bars. i have put in all the access point settings as defined by my operator (which are common for both 2g and 3g). i have enabled hsdpa/hsupa from winmo settings->connections->advanced n/w. is something amiss with the hspa settings on the phone? i really want to confirm that i have my phone set up right before i muster the courage to call up customer care.
(for someone from bombay, india, i am running mtnl 3g prepaid with following settings:- ap:gprsppsmum u:mtnl pass:mtnl123. this in itself is quite baffling because mtnl delhi has separate aps for 2g and 3g whereas the bombay network has the same ap for both. ap=access point)
2) i have never seen the H/3G/E/G icons on my taskbar. i mean the ones that are NEXT TO the signal strength icons. the space between the headset and the signal strength is always empty. isnt that particular icon supposed to show 'availibility' of the respective type of data connection? i read somewhere a long time ago that the icons are ROM dependent. but i am pretty sure i have seen snapshots of tmous phones with those icons...
i have been using bsnl cellone 3g since feb and i always got H in south india, even while roaming,...in few cities up north, like lucknow, i got only 3g icon displayed..i guess it should be H in mumbai..
from what you say, i think you have not enabled HSDPA/HSPA setting in the phone...do that..it is in settings/menu/all settings/connection manager or ?phone / advanced network ( i think...can't tell exactly where...iam presently on the android side...)

no, i have enabled hspa (both directions) from advanced network. i said that in my original post as well. what windows rom were you running? also did you just get H speeds or see the H icon as well?
both H icon and speeds on 1.48 wwe and 3.14 wwe roms
Hi I use an unlocked TMOUS HD2 here in Italy with the italian carrier PosteMobile and experience the same problem of silenced3 (almost the same as I still haven't tried a cellular data connection): My phone doesn't show the kind of cellular signal available, only when it data connection is activated it says what type of connection it's using. Anyone knows how to solve this?
Thank you for your help...

UMTS & HSDPA Hopping

Hey, I have an USA T-Mobile Vibrant.
It is rooted and running the Vibrant edition of Darky's 9.3 Final ROM.
I am also using the latest overstock kernal and the honeycomb 2.0 theme from the I9000 forums.
Enough background info. This isn't really a problem as much as my curiosity.
My phone almost constantly is switching back and forth between 3G (UMTS) and H (HSDPA) on my data connection.
It doesn't seem to affect battery life or service too much (though H might be faster), so I'm not worried; but does anyone know what the deal is with this?
Thanks ahead of time!!!

Mine has been doing this lately as well. It's only been happening since I installed my current ROM (Trigger 2.7).
Noticed this just now as well...might have something to do with the mods to show H or 3G.
I wonder if it has anything to do with signal strength. I know that shouldn't make a difference but I can't think of any other reason.

I would agree, but I went to my settings/ phone info/ signal page and the reason it was changing was because it was physically switching between UMTS and HSDPA.
Why? I have no idea.
I do live in a T-Mobile 4G enabled area, though I am not on their so called "4G plan".
I did notice that it did not have this switching problem on Bionix Frost-u2.
So, if anyone has some insight, please help us all understand

I was just watching my signal strength change and it doesn't seemed tied to the change from 3G to H.
For example, it would be around 67dBm and be on UMTS. Raise to up to around 75dBm and be on UMTS. Then it would switch to HSDPA and still be at 75dBm or sometimes lower down to 69-72dBm and still be on HSDPA.
So with that type of cross-over stats, I would be skeptical of that solution.
HSDPA is a temporary data link. If it was on continously the phone would have very poor battery life.
When network server has a data packet for your phone it 'pages' up your HSDPA capability. Your phone can also request HSPA to initiate a data transmission.
The HSPA paging process is similar to receiving and initiating a voice call.
If no more packets have qued at their server or received from your phone after some period of time it will revert to normal 3G battery saver cycling. It has to be re-paged up to reinitiate HSPA data link. The wake up HSPA function does add some initial delay.
So is there a way to force it to stay on HSPA while tethered, for example? (Or always)

Why is Edge faster than 3G or H+ (see edit)?

Ever since I've transferred to AT&T I've had laggy data issues. I finally rooted/flashed to AOKP, and while trying to address the issues of no APNs appearing or saving and no signal status in the status bar, I've come to find both AT&T and T-Mobile as Available Networks under some network setting. Am I chasing ghosts here, or is there something actually up?
EDIT: So I really need help troubleshooting the issue. I'll logcat, dump, or whatever necessary. I've been in many cities/areas and this problem persists: if I haven't used data or the phone hasn't been backgrounding traffic, it'll take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before a connection is made when I try to access an internet-related function on my phone (even though 3G/H is displayed in the status bar). Out of shear frustration (this has been happening since I got the phone, under stock ROMs and now under AOKP), I tried messing with *#*#info#*#*. I changed WCDMA-preferred to WCDMA-only -- no improvement. Oddly, I also tried GSM-only. Well, great improvement! Even though I only have E, there is absolutely no latency in waiting for a connection -- so pages and other data end up loading faster on Edge than 3G !
I have absolutely no idea why my phone takes forever to make a connection. Under 3G, I see only but a few upstream network activity blips (even under full bars) for as much as 30 seconds, before there is any downstream activity (and when it comes, it comes). Can anyone help???
P.S.: I'm going to try using a friend's SIM later for comparison.

The phone displays 3G because thats what it is... then when data is being processed, it shows H because its using the "what AT&T calls 4G but its really HSPA" side of the network. For just standby time with no data, its going to show 3G because HSDPA is traffic, not standby.

Well that's strange. I'm used to phones displaying what network-level they are capable of. So why would it not just display H for HSPA+ when HSPA+ service is available, instead of only displaying under traffic.
I'm going to go ahead an edit this thread to help troubleshoot what I think to be the main issue.
After some trials I see that the network indicator switches back and forth between 3G and H a few tines before making the connection and transmitting data. Hmmm...
Basically, "4G" will eat your battery alive so the phone idles at 3G and jumps to H+ only when you use data. If you were on a "stock" ATT rom it would always read H+, but this is technically false since when its idle the phone sits in 3G. CM9 and AOKP accurately display it which is why you see the switch.

I have a HTC Amaze for a phone and the Galaxy S2 is my media player. Sometimes, when I don't feel like carrying around two devices, I put my T-Mobile SIM in the galaxy and use it as my phone. I must say, Edge is not as slow as I remember it being. Maybe speed is contingent on network traffic. If thats the case, instead of using crowded "faux G" networks, I may defer to Edge to save battery life and get good dl/ul rates.
My phone does the same thing. I noticed it sometime ago. When idle 3g. Internet I get H+. This is with both Shostock2 and Phone Bricker. I was curious to know too but just blew it off because it really doesnt make any difference to me as long as Im getting decent speeds. Im not even with ATT anymore. Went with Straight Talk. Which uses ATT towers. Cant beat the price!!
They don't have the correct apns, but that symbol problem is because the phone doesn't use hspa+ passively, only actively. It causes some lag when downloading, but it is faster fit large data. But your problem is due to a supposed imei range with bad modems. Rehash stick, fix the triangle, and return it.

[Q] Help about using HSPA

Hi all!
Im using a moto E with Tata Docomo sim.
The problem is that when I change my network mode to WCDMA only, the phone shows only 3G and not H+. However, when I go out of my home, I get H+ with full signal.
I've talked to customer care and the issue is that another cell tower which doesnt support HSPA is stronger in my home so the phone connects to it and only shows 3G even when data transfer takes place. 3G is so much slower than HSPA/HSPAP.
Is there any way I can force my phone to connect to HSPA/HSDPA only?? I dont mind if the signal drops a little. Since it is possible to force the phone to using 3G only, I thought forcing to 3.5G could also be done
Also my phone is rooted so changing any system file is not a problem.
Please help..
Thank you.
