Hi,
When i use a case, like the thin casemate or Orginal samsung galaxy s2 case, i get echo when i call someone, the cases are not covering the mic, can you guys call somebody with a case on and see if they hear echo, when you guys call them? Are anyone having troubles like this?
Im getting this too, ive got like a hardish gel case. When its on theres echo on the callers line, take it off mid call and the echo disappears! So frustrating
Me too.
I have this exact same problem. Callers tell me that they hear an echo, which disappears when I remove the phone cover (Case Mate Tough case).
Interestingly, the echo also disappears when I turn noise reduction off. However I have to do this for each call as there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it permanently
I love the S2 but I'm thinking of sending it back and getting something else because of this.
You cases are not blocking the top microphone hole next to the headphone socket are they.

Thanks for the reply, but no, there is a hole for the socket on the top of my case so it's not being covered.
I have the same problem, i have a plasic case and im getting people saying there is an echo
I have a silicon case and have problems with echoes on the other end of the line and also poor voice call quality if I have the case on. If I remove the case the problems are gone.
Is there anyone who can provide some help in this matter. Is it just poor biuld quality / hardware related, or is it a bug in software that may get resolved with future updates ?
Has anyone managed to get around this problem ?
Has anybody tried the official Samsung case for echo, echo
Problem solved
As I was still within the 14 day period for returns I took my Galaxy S2 back to the shop and got a replacement.
There is now NO echo for callers when they ring me, even with the cover on. I think there must have been a fault with first handset they gave me.
If it's an option for you guys, I'd send back your handset and get a new one to see if it solves the issue you are experiencing.
Here in India, I spoke with the service center since I too am facing the same issue with voice echo while using a silicon case with my S2.
They say that inorder to claim DOA I should have contacted them within 4 days.
Its been 5 days now and they still decline on any such issue being known and providing a replacement.
Wish there was another solution to solving this problem.
Calibration issue
This is obviously a acoustic calibration issue, I'll bet that there is a service function to activate calibration to compensate for increased / decreased acoustic conduction in the phones case and microphone sensitivity.
This must be something that's done in the factory.
Having personally worked in a factory where alarm break glass detectors are made I can tell you that condenser microphones vary wildly in response and output.
Someone ether needs to make an app to do this alsamixer?
Enable/disable speaker..
I have the same issue.. everytime someone tells me they hear echo i have to press enable speaker and then disable it.. then the echo disappears.
So.. There must be a software thingy to fix it.
Hope samsung fix it in a update..
Ok, I have this problem as well, friends are complaining about it quiet a lot, and I do not have any cover on my SGSII, so its not a cover issue... anyone has any solution for that?
Edit: Ok, did some testing, switching to Speaker and then back resolves the problem, however thats only temporary issue, I am going to contact Samsung Customer care now if they are aware of it or not... will keep you updated
Edit2: Ok, official response from samsung is to bring the phone for repair... I am not willing to do this yet...
Bump, does anyone else have this problem? I am getting pretty annoyed with it... anyone got solution for that?

@zheiko- I still have this problem, even after tying multiple different brand cases. Do let me know if you find a solution.
Well im using mine with case mate tough case on it since 2 weeks and so far im not experiencing any such issues...i doubt its a problem to do with cases...the best option/solution will be to get a replacement for the handset if possible.

I have the same issue with no case at all.
Also, the in call volume is extremely low when using the headphones.
One of my friends was nagging me about hearing a echo.
So I tried to unroot and load a stock kernel.
And while I was doing that I also unchecked USB debugging.
After that the echo was gone.
Then I tried to root again, and this time did a test with USB debugging on/off.
And it seems that turning off USB debugging off fixed it for me(No need to unroot).

Wow...your lucky......Mine had USB debugging turned off. Tried turning it on/off.
Issue still persists.
i shall try turning off the de bugging. that's the only thing that stops the annoying kies pop up when you plug your phone into the pc! if this works i shall post it here!

Hi:
I just got my galaxy s2 today. The only and important problem i found so far is the Speaker ( the one we use for calling not music). I keep hearing the electric noise when i make phone calls. the noise disappear if i use the earphone. So, I am sure that something is wrong with the Speaker........
love this phone so much.
Can somebody help?
Thanks a lot!!!
Return the phone for a refund or exchange, the earpiece speaker is broken.
where was this phone purchased?
I bought it from clove
When I turn the volume down a bit the problem is gone.
It only happens when I turn the volume to max or one step from max.
Is that still mean there is a problem with my s2?
Thanks.

Does anybody know how to solve this?
this problem is still there no matter what.
Thanks.
Might be a dumb question but whatever.
Are you connected to edge/2g? Are you next to a computer/wifi router?

NO I am having 3g or H+ from rogers, Canada.
it mast be something to do with the speaker because If i use the earphone the problem is gone.
is it possible that rooting caused it?
root did not cause it, the issue was probably always there. i really wish more people would reply saying if they do or do not have the issue as well, so we know if its common to all SGS2 units, or you just have a specific defect.
As per request..
No I don't have this problem and have used the speakerphone several times.
No problem with my earpiece speaker or my speakerphone
Not here but I do get the headset issue...though that's another thread..

awesome, there are some data points. max volume doesnt seem to crackle everyone's speaker, so maybe a bad batch is going around.
My SGS2 ear-peace crackles on max volume pretty badly - sounds like something is rattling inside. If I put it one or two notches below max, the crackling stops.
I also purchased from clove and live in Canada.
I had this issue with a nokia years back. I ordered and replaced the speaker and the problem was solved. It could just be that it was not glued-snapped down properly and this causes it to vibrate. real crackling is caused by a distorted diaphragm in the speaker.
Anywho, I also was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I'm afraid to say I noticed this on my phone today. Turned it down a couple of notches & the crackle could no longer be heard. Far from ideal. Will have to check with clove on next steps, and samsung australia on repair cost if done locally.
Yup same problem here. The local samsung service centre technician says there's nothing wrong with the speaker, I guess he's just lazy to look into it.
I'll send it in again to another samsung service centre to have another look.
no problem with my speakers, but sometimes the earpiece sound does seem too low when receiving calls even if i have it on max volume settings
Have the same problem... Like the earspeaker is distorting and vibrating. It starts just when I call somebody, when ringing.... Tomorrow I will take it to hospital
ok I got back my phone from Samsung Service Centre, after a second persuasion they changed the front panel (whole LCD including the front speaker, not sure if the back speaker too, I don't know the structure of the phone).
And now, it's solved!! NO MORE BUZZING when making/receiving calls!
Definitely go ask for an exchange or a change of your panel guys! It's a HARDWARE ISSUE.
Hello
My friend got his Galaxy S2 today, but the vibration is dead, vibration settings is enabled and haptic feedback, but nothing works, tried wipe the device but still no vibration...
So it seems that it have to be sent back to repair... or do you guys know anything he can do?

I've done it 5 times, if you mean factory data reset via the settings.
no one knows what the problem is?
Your not the only one. My work colleague also received a Galaxy S II yesterday with no vibration working - he doesn't like to mess about, he sent it straight back. I'm starting to get really disappointed with Samsung, just like their TVs, constant defective units...
I have the same problem. Tried factory reset and installed new FW, but still nothing....

My opinion:
Sounds like hardware . And the phone I so new ,returning it is the only option.
I have the same issue. Just noticed that i my phone did not vibrate on an incomming message and could nog get it to work through the settings panel either. It's very unexpected. I didn't do anything with it recently and I did not drop it either...
Going to try a reset, let's hope this works! :-/
Just love the phone so i would hate to return it and miss it a few days!
Edit 1: Just went into Test mode (*#0*#) and the vibration test did not work here either.
Edit 2: Factory Reset (within the phone) did not fix it either, so now I'm sending it in for repairs. Let's hope I won't have to miss it for too long... :/
Eureka, suddenly i noticed that my phone's vibration ability was back when walking to a shop with my headphones in. It seems like the headphone jack somehow influences things. Maybe a bad connection between these components?
Maybe you should try this out to confirm this.
Iam also having same issue..got my s2 a month back...have u guys got any ideas to fix dis bug....
Make sure it's a hardware problem after testing the vibration by dialing *#0*# and test the Vibration tool.
Mine's just done the same this morning. Second time now I've had to take it back. *sighs*
Got it repaired at Carphone Warehouse, said they replaced the screen, which kinda perplexes me as I thought most phones had the vibrate motor near the camera?
I've been using my Galaxy S2 lately as music player and noticed that the vibration on my phone doesn't always work (not on messages, phone calls or haptic feedback), even though I have the setting to "always".
I've browsed around online and noticed that other people have the same issue. Most wind up sending their phones back to the shop for repairs, but I fear it is just a bug and not a hardware issue.
So instead I play around with it and just before I frustrated want to send it into the shop, I think I found out how to "work around" this problem.
So the problem arises sometimes after plugging or unplugging head phones into the phone. What you need to do is:
- go to "settings"
- go to "sound"
- play around with the vibration settings (and the order is of importance, otherwise it doesn't work)
* set vibration to "only in silent mode"
* set vibration to "never"
* set vibration to "always"
On the last selection you will feel already that vibration is 'back' (if you use haptic feedback).
Sure, it works, but it is seriously annoying. I do hope Samsung quickly sends a patch/update to fix this bug!
Vibration died on my phone also. The trick above does not work for me.
It´s no bug, it´s hardware related.
If you move headphone plug gently sideways, it´s starts to work.
I think it´s bad contact or defective part.
I bought used phone and noticed it when i was testing phone.
I had to return it.. (didn´t , instead got it cheap..)
I opened up that phone that i got cheap.
I can now confirm that in my case there where flat cable broken on vibration motor.
Ordered new one on ebay.
In my case this phone has couple dents on chrome.
I think that voids warranty.
But look at the bright side.
I can fix it and phone was 170€ which is pretty cheap for me.
I can get more for my sgs1.
Sgs2 is very easy to open, if you compare to iphone 3gs.
[old thread, i know, but it's exactly as my problem]
The vibration doesn't work for a few days now, it only works when i plug the headphone jack just about when it makes the click sound, if i unplug it or plug it completely the vibration stops working (tested via *#0*#).
So, how did you guys fix this? Seems like a hardware problem but could be software too.
I have the same problem and also in my case is a problem with the headphones connector.
Now I wonder: but it is a defect in GS2 all or only some?
Had the same problem.
Just put my headphones in then while pulling out headphones jack switched silent mode on/off and it seems to fix problem. Maybe the problem is about shorting some contacts on headphones jack (in my case vibration turns off while headphones in) because of condensate which occurs while you carrying it in your pocket or maybe as Buffalee said its about broken flat cable who knows .
Hi there,
At my SGS2 it seems the microphone hole next to the microUSB cable, is not open. Everybody complains they can't hear me.
Sure, I can send the SGS2 back, but then I'm won't have a phone for the next couple of weeks.
Does anyone know, who already disassembled the SGS2, what this could be? Some soft plastic which I can easily remove with a needle?
My last option would be send it back, but maybe you guys know an option?
Can I use some audio codes for cranking up te mic?
Thanks!

Hmm .. seems I have the exact same problem here. People are complaining they can't hear me and they hear a terrible echo. Tried with headset, problem solved (of course ) Not sure if it is not open, I can see something gray inside the hole, which could be the mic. Disassembling is not an option for me, just got it yesterday so .. if there is really something wrong I will go back to the store asap.
I am disappointed about this, really, expected a lot from this phone to replace my Desire.
EDIT: tried also speakerphone, then it is all normal. Speakerphone uses the mic on top near the headphone jack, I just found out. It looks like a faulty mic to me (or covered with something).
EDIT 2: Fixed, although people say that with my previous phone the quality was better. Reset to factory defaults did the trick for me. It seems that the firmware update the other day (used Kies) had messed something up, that is my guess.
New device
Well, I kept holding the problem. Yesterday in the morning all was fine, in the noon people kept telling they hear me with bad quality and an echo. I went back to the store, explained the situation, they gave me a new device. I can clearly see the difference in the microphone hole .. the first phone it was closed, here it is more open. Problem should be solved now, I hope. I can say that I tested the quality myself and I can hear the difference. The sound of voice is more clear and louder.
I think it is word a shot for you to try to change your phone for a new one.
I have a pretty annoying problem because from the earbud (under the wrtitten SONY) comes interfecences while i'm speaking with someone using the mobile line.
The interference is like that of the speaker near a mobile phone but from the earbud.
someone has the same problem or mine is a isolated case?

I think you mean earpiece...not earbud.
If you hold the phone near your ear you can hear a very high pitched hiss sound while you are talking? The sound has a pattern to it. If so, then I have tried 2 of these phones and they both do it. I don't now if they all do it, but it seems to be common. Some people who don't have such good high-pitched hearing will not hear it at all. You will never hear it if you are outdoors...only if you are at home in a quiet room.

I hear it too. It's the usual GSM "cellphone interference" sound.
Hi i have the same i hear that xd
But what i have noticed this is only in GSM mode ...at WDCMA its ok..i cant hear this .
I have the same problem. Got my first phone replaced and the new one came today with the same problem.
Try only with WDCMA (3G) and See if that help.

Its like a electronics interference noise.

i can hear that hissing too, i ve searched about it, and it looks like latest smartphones have that kind of problem, the only solution i could find is not to place your ear directly on the earpiece, fortunately this phone has a great in-call volume...
earpiece hissing, crackling, buzzing - problem solved
well amigos, the problem finally has been solved for me, reading this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3414732?start=0&tstart=0
so i turned off my phone, i removed the sim card, i cleaned it using a soft cloth, and then i inserted it back, making sure the sim card was placed correctly in the tray, i tested it several times and guess what, there was no more hissing anymore, so the problem is the micro sim-card, those sim-cards must be placed correctly otherwise it will make that hisssing sound
i hope this works for you too
greetings from colombia...
Had my first two calls today, same problem. Interestingly, it gets louder/more noticeable when I'm actively speaking, not when the other party says something.
Sim-Card is fresh from the envelope, so there shouldn't be scratches, dust or fingerprints on it, but I'll try cleaning it up tomorrow. Got the phone set on GSM only, since I've got bad 3G/UMTS signal at home and I'm pretty sure constant "channel-hopping" would drain the battery.
Hi,
got xperia S yesterday. Great phone... only problem is GSM interference in the earpiece. It is there every time when phone is set to 2G. 3G is free of this issue. As I can hear at every call it's a bit irritating.
I don't know what should I do: sent it back to the store (bought from amazon), try to repair in the service centre or learn to live with it?
Can any of xperia S owners make a siple test: put the phone in "only GSM" mode and make one or two calls. Put earpiece close to the ear and listen to it. I wonder if it's design flaw and every xperis S have this issue, or only some of them....
Anyone who got his phone replaced and the new one came WITHOUT the same problem ???

Thank for reply. Anyone who had this problem and managed to get rid of if by repairing / replacing phone ?
well i know there are post on the quality of the calls on this phone ( mainly the other party struggling to hear what you say) . i have finally blown my top ! since i first got this phone back in May, this has been an on and off problem. today i made 4 calls this morning 3 of which saying they were struggling or couldn't hear me ! i was so fed up i rang Sony and did a "repair" with PC companion .. made no difference what so ever ! then it was fantastic, i was on the phone to phones 4U, who i bought the phone from, and the lady said "sorry i cant hear you sir" so the phone is going back. to be repaired . im not holding out a lot of hope that this will fix the problem due to the amount of threads where a fair few people are having this problem. seems to be a sub quality microphone on this device
I just had probably my first conversation of any length and not on BT with my gf. She said she couldnt hear me the whole time. I turned off that setting in sound or call menu and that didnt help much. Im disappointed.
Try turning off microphone noise suppression in Call Settings. It helps in a few situations.
I have had the exact opposite problem. I couldn't hear the other party (not on speakerphone) but they could hear me crisp and clear.
I tried that during my call with the gf, she did say it got better but only marginally. Out of my last few Android phones she said this one sounded horrible, specially compared to the M8 I was about to sell. This is probably a deal breaker for me. How do you make a high end phone that has terrible call quality?
I've got the exact same problem with my Z2. The other party cannot hear me when I hold the phone to my ear -- if I turn the call on speaker, everything works fine!
Also, the other party hears a very strong echo of their own voice, but only when the call is not on speaker.
It is absolutely beyond me, how something this simple has gone through the quality checks at Sony. Seriously, a 600€ phone that you can't use to make normal phone calls. Are you serious?
And yes, I also tried turning off noise cancellation in the call settings, did not help really much...
The fact that it DOES work when using the speaker tells me that it is "just" some software bug that should be fixable (and not a defect microphone).
No issues here with call quality, only issues i have is the charger door keeps mysteriously opening in my pocket and that damn screen reacting to metal, same issue, pull it out my pocket and its opened something or removed a shortcut grrrrr

yeah my girlfriend tells me she gets feedback too ! so it DOES seem that this is a regular problem with this phone and its just not my handset ! well the phone is going back .. if its a software issue, then unless Sony update the software it the problem will still be there even if they replace the microphone. i just think that its terrible that expensive so called "flagship" devices can have such basic problems. after all .. its a telephone and your supposed to be able to communicate on a phone !
As I wrote on the other topic I tested with Viber and Skype calls and there is no echo so my opinion is this is a software problem. Unfortunately I have no guarantee and I have to wait for some dev's to solve this problem.

well if it helps , i did post a thread in the developers section asking if any one of them could come up with a "fix" for the microphone issues.. guess it depends on how many of them suffer with this problem .. or have the time to devote to a fix . not knowing if its a software or hardware issue don't help ! all i know is i use this phone to speak to my clients , and when day after day im being told they cant hear me properly or they get feedback and a few have just given up and hung up. i cant carry on using this phone as it is !
