[Q] This noob needs some help please - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright guys...this is what I did. I downloaded the newest radio MR2 for Gingerbread...then downloaded BAMF 2.0-5. I went into hboot...flashed the MR2...then rebooted and went into recovery via Rom Manger and attempted to flash BAMF 2.0...recieved a couple of error messages followed by (bad). Oh and I did wipe data before flashing Rom. So then I did a system restore....I just rooted a couple of days ago and as soon I downloaded Rom Manager I did a nand backup of everything stock.
Now I don't have data..when I go into hboot it goes to the "do you want to update" part. The only thing I have in CWM is the nandroid stock restore and the BAMF Rom I could not flash. I've googled for the past hour and cannot find out how to get out of this. Hope someone can help...thanks in advance.

Oh and while I was freakin out trying to fix whetever I screwed I lost CWM. No longer have Rom Manager.

you need to delete the Gingerbread (MR2) PG05IMG from sd card...download one of the froyo radios and flash in bootloader just as you did the Gingerbread radio. then you should be able to boot back up into your restored nandroid rom.

The reason you don't have data is that you restored down to a Froyo (MR1) based ROM, but that does not restore your radio. Grab the 1.13.605.7 radio combo from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045081 and flash it the same way you did the MR2 radio. You'll have data back. GB-based ROMs won't work, but if you want it back to normal, do that.
Now, redownload and install ROM Manager from the market. From within ROM Manager, you can reflash CWM. Remove or rename the PG05IMG.zip from the SD card then reboot into recovery to verify. Now you're all set.
Next time, keep track of what the errors you got from CWM were when you tried to flash the ROM. It's really hard to diagnose a problem without them.

HELP ME! PLEASE! Urgent!

Okay, I just rooted my brother's HTC Hero (GSM Unlock) and updated it to 2.1 Villain, but there were some bugs, like in the messages app, the key board wouldn't show up in a conversation. FB Sync wouldn't sync pictures to his contacts. Is there any way I can downgrade back to the original 1.5? If so, can anyone give me a link to download that .zip? thanks!
*note* I tried flashing the official 2.1 update, it failed
And what is a Nandroid backup? Can I restore it with that?

You really should have read up before just rooting and flashing. A nandroid backup is a backup of the phone so you can restore to how it was before you started to play with it.
You can download the rom you require here.
You should have done a Nandroid backup before trying to flash a new ROM, this is a MUST DO everytime you plan on messing around with the phone, it would simply let you restore the backup back to normal.
You need to do a full wipe of the phone and flash the new ROM posted above.
Jamie.
Can I just flash a stock rom of the HTC Hero generic? I flashed a rooted one, but I keep getting this notification about an OTA,I tried installing it, but it fails. If I flash a stock rom (if possible) can I install the OTA's?
I seem to be having somewhat the same problem.
Although I didnt flash my hero to that custom rom you're mentioning.
The problem is that I've been running the modaco 3.0 rom for quite a while and wanted to get the stock 2.1 rom.
I've tried to flash it using the HTC tool but couldn't be done. I accidently overrided my nandroid backup of the stock 1.5 rom so I found a stock 1.5 on modaco's forum and flashed it.
Now I'm running 1.5, build 2.73.405.5
Every time I wipe the phone and start from scratch (setting up the phone as if it was new) I get a notification about a new OTA update. When I try to update it, the phone resets (seems fine) and it ends up in Nandroid and doesn't get any further.
Then I chose to reboot the phone and the phone runs as normal but still no new firmware.
What am I doing wrong?
I've also tried the HTC tool for flashing the ROM but end up with a connection error (170).
I have of course wiped the phone but it doesn't help...

I have the same problem! And when I do flash 2.1, the keyboard never appears when I go to the messages app. I just flashed an official stock 2.73.405.66 build, what if I do the OTA? Will it fail too? 'Cause I think it fails because last time, my phone was rooted.
Anyone got help? :-/

[H] Can't boot up upon Htc Quitly Brilliant screen

Hey, i have an rooted HTC Hero with froyo 2.2 VillianROM.
I've found a ROM on xda and wanted to put it on. so i'd copied the zip file to the sdcard. Entered Recovery mode (my recovery image is the ps3 hackable image for jailbreaking) update went good, so i've selected the reset my device. Htc Hero logo's come up, and then the boot animation with HTC Quietly Brilliant Comes up. Animation goes smooth, and it is HERE that the problems occurs. Afterwards the phone is stuck in this mode, and it have been stock for more than an hour!
So what do i do now? Install a new ROM?
Sorry if there's a thread similar to this.
Jakk212
Try to download this ROM one more time and put it on your sdcard again. Then try to flash your Hero with this ROM. Maybe sth went wrong during downloading file.
If this won't help, try another ROM.

I can't put any files on my Micro SD Card. Tried to enter recovery mode and re-install the same ROM again but didn't work. Same problem as the last one.
Copy ROM file on sd without using phone - put card in card reader in your PC. Did you make full wipe?
Didn't make full wipe, have found a floyo ROM and installed it buy using my freinds htc desire i was able to switch the sdcard's so that he could copy the files to the card. (this time i wiped the device)
ohh wait... IT'S ALIVE! just in this moment it worked!
Always make backup and full wipe before flashing different ROM

When you say a backup do you refer to the nandroid backup
he indeed is referring to nandroid, i never do it cuss im a flasher like mad, so i set up a new rom in minutes.
But backup then do a full wipe, including dalvik, and then install the new rom, even if its the same base, just full wipe, my advice.
When i try to do a nandroid backup, it takes foreverto do i'll always end up taking the battery out...
thats why i dont do backups on my phone, not the patience
Hehe
but atleast my phone works now!
i never have problem while doing nandroids.
how long does it takes your phone to the the nandroid backup?

Hello!
I have a similar problem.
After flashing a 2.2 rooted rom (can't remember which one), i wanted to return bak to SenseHero 2.1 b5, but it always gets into boot loop.
First i tried nand restore-didn't work, then full wipe and flash again-didn't work.
Then i tried other 2.1 rooted roms (Kimera, cronos droid), but always end up in loop at boot.
Only 2.1 roms I can boot into are villain, modaco which I do not really like, and STOCK 2.1.1 rom which is terrible. I want SenseHero 2.1 back, or CronosDroid
I did a full wipe before flashing 2.2, I always do full wipe before flashing ROMs so I don't know what's the problem.
Even tried adding flykernel 10/11c over fresh sense hero 2.1 flash, but didn't help.
I think that the problem startet when I flashed new recovery 1.7.0.1, but i reverted back to 1.6.2, and flashed sense hero, but it didn't change anything.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!
Don't think that the recovery image-change has anything to do with it. I had an ps3 recovery image (for jailbreaking) and i was able to get into the phone from there.
i putted a new rom on to the sdcard, totatlly wiped the device, installed the rom, and reseted the device (i did tough this proces serveral times before it finally booted up!)

[Q] ruu update lost root?

Just updated the ruu found in the bamf remix 1.5 post and lost my root? Or seemed to.
First post because most the time I can find the answers through posts but this I can't seem to find.
I was previously rooted, flashed the new ruu via hboot and everything went smooth. Reboot, reinstall superuser and clockwork via marketplace, and superuser wouldn't take an auto update when it prompted me there was a new version out. Clockwork says I need root before it can do anything.
Few notes to consider :
- s-off is still there (least it says so in hboot)
- my first root I did was the longer way with Android sdk command line, no one click, no 400mb file
- dumb me is dumb, got excited about the new ruu and no nandroid backup
Now I'm chilling here, tried reboots, flash in hboot, and all I can do is sit here staring at my stick Rom like.... Herpa derp want root and bamf back
Help??? Please? Would rather not have to re root. As I won't have access to my computer for days.

Did you update to bamf 1.5, or someone posted the stock untouched ruu and you decided to flash that?
Download titanium back up and root, hit "problems?"
and install busybox.
Sometimes when I flash roms it will say i dont have root access, and go through titanium, hit problems, and keep installign busybox (ive had to do it up to 3 times)
and then it works for me
I used the ruu file that was posted in the bamf remix 1.5 thread in the first post right above the zip file for the actual Rom
And I didn't make it to installing bamf. Just finished with the ruu flash via hboot and was on my way to flash bamf when clockwork told me I didn't have root. This is when I went forum hunting about two hours ago :/

So you didn't do any RUU, you flashed the radio. I flashed that radio before i flashed BAMF 1.5 and everything is working fine over here. Did you check MD5 sum to make sure that it downloaded correctly?

Yeah. Little goofy on the terminology, fairly new to Android least. But yeah I always check any Rom or kernel or anything like that
I'm not sure, I don't understand how you can lose root just by flashing the radio, never heard of it happening before, sorry.

No problem. I assume I did something wrong but I can't put a finger on it.
Ah well. I appreciate the help m8!
I'm gonna go out on the limb here and say that when you first rooted you never removed the zip file from you sd card and hboot pulled that image instead of the radio update.

Possibly.... If I delete that. Download the new radio, and flash via hboot any ideas what would happen?
Edit... Yup that's what I did. I know... Im a genius swear I had moved that file and over written. Took a lot longer to flash that old file lol. Thanks!
Now just live with the stock sense UI and no root till I can redo that, /cringe

It's an honest mistake. I had the file on my sd for awhile before I found out. Glad I could help.
I did the same thing but I am stuck in Fastboot/HBoot. If I select reboot or power down in the Fastboot menu, I just come back to Fastboot. If I choose bootloader, I can't use the volume keys to select any of the menu options except the first one (Fastboot). After a few seconds it looks like it starts running the update process on PG05IMG but fails and says "Main version is older." Google/forum searches haven't shown me anything and I don't know where to go from here.
Similar problem
Hi, and thanks for bearing with a noob.
I have a HTC desire, rooted using unrevoked 3. I and I have tried a couple different ROMs successfully and was able to use Titanium Backup and ROM manager successfully, but after flashing cyanogen 7, I want to start using Titanium Backup, but it tells me could not aquire root priv., I went to the problems tab and it tells me make sure im rooted. did I lose root? the only choices it gives me from there is 'prefrences' and 'upgrade superuser' when i upgrade su. I did that to no avail.
also going into ROM manager it tells me ; superuser was not found.
anyway, i have been trying to search for the answer to this for a few days and have tried a couple things. my question is basically, did I lose root and need to unroot and reroot? or is there a way to enable superuser?
Thanks for any help

[Q] does clicking Install Recovery a second time override first time clicking it?

when updating from gingerblur 1.2 to 1.3 i went into the tenfar's recovery app and clicked Install Recovery again, even though I had already done this before install gingerblur, I want to try out the new grey blur and was thinking bout using recover to go back to my first after root install, but now that I have clicked it I don't want to end up just going back to 1.2
so basically two questions, can I recover back to my first pre gingerblur 1.2 version of atrix, or can I only go back to gingerblur 1.2 at this point since I overrided it?
and yes I know about sbf flashing I just am lazy and would like to know if I have the option to recover from multiple states
Install recovery actually initiates the recovery process....... it doesn't complete till the phone rebotes and you work through the flashing menu..... so pressing it multiple times wouldn't do anything I guess??
as for going back i don;t think that is an option anymore hence the flashing method said " are you sure" and also "This process can not be undone"..... not unless you flash a new sbf, which is can brick if not done properly.
i believe we are confused, you are supposed to click install recovery before loading any kind of rom like gingerblur or greyblur, my question was can i recover from multiple states, or only the very last one, becuase if that is the case I have to reflash stock sbf in order to do a clean install of greyblur since the last time i clicked the install recovery button was after gingerblur 1.2 was installed, while the first one was pre any kind of romming

Ahh yes, sorry, you can flash any rom over the top of gingerblur as long as it is the complete version, not an update( from say v1.xx to v2.xx), it has to be the complete v2.xx zip file.
Yes it is good practice to press install recovery every time you want to flash, just to make sure the process files haven't been altered, so that you don't end
up soft-bricking your phone...
I'm not sure you can recover multiple initial states, or even the last state given the flashing cannot be undone.... (though I've never tried....)
And as for reverting back to stock motoblur you will need to use the sbf flash, this is because no one has made a rom of the core files to restore the motoblur ui...
Sorry does this answer???
well not exactly lol you see I saw a post in greyblur where people were complaining about having to reflash sbf back to 1.2.6 in order to start over fresh n clean from a gingerblur install, and someoen suggested that if you have been using tenfars recovery rom that you could actually use that to recover from an original state when you first loaded cwm and before you loaded a rom, that way you can save a lot of time and trouble in going through and reflashing 1.2.6, rooting, and then updating rom.

Yes you can do this. But if you didn't create backups via CWM before flashing any of the ROMS then I think you are SOL. Here's what you should have done:
flash 1.2.6 -> before update root -> update to 1.5.7 -> after update root -> install CWM -> create backup via CWM recovery menu -> flash gingerblur 1.x -> create backup via CWM recvovery menu -> flash gingerblur 2.x -> create backup via CWM recovery... etc etc.
unless you want to do a fresh 1.2.6 SBF flash every time you update to the newest ROM/Theme version. But the point I'm making is backup via CWM after every major flash/change/whatever.
CWM will save the backup on your SDcard in a folder named after the date of the backup. /sdcard-ext/clockworkmod/backup/<date of backup>

[Q] Trouble with bootloop post-ICS flash

Hey guys, Im in urgent need of help here.
I'll give you an exact account of what i did.
saved apps via Ti. Back.; uploaded the new ICS radios and debloated, deodexed rom from my computer to my tbolt, renamed the radio from my computer; booted into 4ext, nandroid, wiped EVERYTHING, booted into bootloader; bootloader detected the new radio and I confirmed its update
Next thing that happened was that the HTC splash screen appeared as normal but disappeared, leaving a blank screen with dim backlight. Pulled battery and tried to reboot 10+ times to no avail. Same thing happens everytime. ADB doesn't recognize the phone but i CAN boot into bootloader. The problem is that everytime I boot into bootloader, the radio begins to update, leaving with the only option to reboot. Thus, I cant get into recovery.
I've spent the past couple hours trying to do my homework on this but its not looking too hot. I need this bad boy, so help is much appreciated.
Doug
You need to take the radio off the sd card, so you can boot to recovery and actually flash the rom.
Sounds like you haven't flashed a rom yet, so it has nothing to boot into.
With the radio image (PG05IMG.zip) on the root it will not go to Recovery.
So you will need to find a card reader to rename the radio file, since you wiped prior to flashing the radios.
The preferred process would have been to flash the radios, boot to your current rom, rename the radio file from within the current rom.
Then boot to recovery and flash the new rom.
I somewhat outlined this in the OP of the rooted rom thread where you should have gotten the download from.

Makes sense.I dont know why I read "wipe everything" before the rest of your thread and thought that meant to do so before reflashing radios.
Got a $10 reader and was able to change the radio file and boot into recovery. Flashed the rom as usual and it looks lke everythings working.
Thanks for the help man.
