Can the Flyer play high-profile .mkv movies?
Also, can you transfer a 5-8 GB movie file to the Flyer and play it flawlessly?
The Playbook does NFTS storage so you can play 6 - 8 GB movie files. I don't know if the Flyer can do NFTS or not.
you mean, you'd like to know if you can format your SD card as a NTFS drive, and copy large video files on it?
No it won't play. I tried loading 720 mkv and it doesn't play. But the SD card is supported.
I tried to with an app downloaded from the market, it does play with sounds, but the picture is not that great.
I am using Plex to play all my videos (all file types including mkv). Plex re-encodes on the fly, saving you from having to re-encode your video for your specific device.
When I had my Transformer, I was not happy with the quality of the video. But on the Flyer's 7" screen its acceptable.
I need to set up a remote server so I can watch my vids remotely away from home.

:O i'm gonna try it, thanks for the info
Using Plex Remotely
Using this guide below, I was able to remotely access my Plex Media Server with my Flyer tethered to my HTC Thunderbolt.

Of note: To test your remote connection, make sure your Flyer is not connected to your home wifi network. In my case I tethered my Flyer to my Thunderbolt.
It works beautifully I might add.

I've read the vplayer and rockplayer should support MKVs. Supposedly you can get a cable for 1080p HDMI playback on an external source. I have not tried any of the above.

Maybe you can connect in 1080p but from what I've read the chipset does not support 1080p video decoding.
vplayer and rockplayer would not play back 720p mkvs for me. it would play 720p avi.
I cant remember which one it was, but one of the video players i tried would play them back on "software decoding" (as opposed to "hardware decoding"), but it didn't look good.
Try Moboplayer. It plays back 720p mkvs for me. Its not super smooth but its the lowest frame drops i've seen.
I'm trying to convert some files into formats that can be easily read by the Flyer's stock software. Maybe this is a pipedream, but I thought I'd ask.
Video:
We know that some formats are possible, and others are not (specifically .mkv seems to be a problem at 1080p). I have DVD's that I'd like to rip to .avi (perhaps .mp4 is better). I followed youtube directions at youtube.com/watch?v=R5fsz3TWuFk and that format isn't able to be played. Other AVI files are. Something about that is written here (forums.streamingmedia.com/thread-11192-post-12576.html) but I couldn't figure out what they were suggesting. Is it possible to get the movies I make into HTC Watch, or can I only watch them though the "Connected Media" app? If I need to use .mp4, can anyone recommend a good free file converter?
Books:
Similar story. I got .epub to work, but only on some files (converting from .pdf, .lit, .doc).
Music:
I use .mp3, so everything there works perfectly, but others might have questions.
I am in a similar boat. It is difficult to choose and manage which programs to use. I think both Google and HTC are great but HTC Reader doesn't sync with Google Books and the same with HTC and Google Music. I enjoy sense but also enjoy cloud services. Hopefully in the future HTC with sync with these cloud services and not have their own separate services.
I can 100% confirm that the HTC Flyer can support XviD in the avi container and h.264 in the mp4 container. Of course max resolution the device can support is 720p
Download and install Handbrake - easy to use, yet powerful encoding software.
We still can't watch rented Google Movies over HDMI?
Audio comes thru to the TV and youtube, other videos, games, etc work fine.
Anyone able to watch Google Movies over HDMI?
google movies aren't high resolution anyway, right? I've watched in browser and I think it was 480p, not too good on a hd tv..
Ok here is the problem I am having. Im using my PC in my office as a media server. I am able to connect with my DNA and pull up all my videos with ease. Thing is not all my videos are in .mp4 format majority are in .avi. I am able to see the thumbnails of the videos but when I play them it says cannot be played. So on the side there is an option where you can search for wifi players. Tried that and even though I have video apps like mobo, vlc, and mx video installed. HTC doesn't recognize these options as wifi players. So should I convert these movies to .mp4? Im trying not to because most are HD movies over a gig each.

Clear the defaults for your stock video player and tap on the movie you want while using a file explorer then pick what player you want. The player option is for you to stream from your phone to a device that can hande the format, not an app on your phone.

Just been reading reviews of this phone and it's sibling the 6.2 and how both have HDR screens but apps like Netflix and YouTube don't let you select the HDR option on videos, but what about local video files such as MKVs through video players such as VLC, MX Player ect. does it properly display the video in HDR as it should look?
I won't link but there are plenty of HDR sample videos to download online in a variety of formats and containers if you are curious and want to test them
Thank you in advance!
