You can download rom manager from the Market and once installed open it and the first option says "install clockwork mod recovery" choose that. It'll install and I assume you know how to get into recovery...turn phone off, hold up volume + down volume + power altogether to boot into recovery. Good roms are bi-winning, project-v, bionix nextgen, sgs II clone....just some off the top of my head. You just download any ROM and place on the root of your internal SD card. Then boot into recovery like I told you above, it should come up and choose 'reinstall packages' it'll reboot now. When it comes back up choose 'reinstall packages' again, this time you'll enter clockwork mod recovery. Wipe factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache under advanced. Then go back and choose install custom ROM I think and then pick choose from SD card. Your roms will be in there you can choose anyone to install once done just go back and reboot system.

im gonna be brutally honest!! it says in op on GB roms that GB roms are for experienced users only. And by the way ur asking for help i wouldnt go to gb roms until ur a lil more advanced. With Gb roms theres more to it then normal 2.2 roms, good luck!
My suggestion, as I was only in your place a few days ago, is to read the vibrant bible, make sure you understand all the steps and procedures associated with rooting, flashing, backing up, etc etc.
Also get famaliar with understanding what titanium backup does, rom manager does and busy box.
Once you learn all this and do your first flash, like myself, whom only did my first flash a few days ago, you will see that what you will read might sound scary, but it's really not as long as you take all the correct steps illustrated in the bible AS WELL as following the instructions for the particular ROM you want to flash. They normally put the install instructions in the OP of the thread.
The most important thing to learn and do, is how to make a nandroid backup of your OS as your fall back should things go wrong.
Now, you are on stock froyo, which means that you will have a challenge to get the clockword recovery console to get loaded onto your phone. There are ways around this, which is the development section but you can read this thread to get more info on why and what you can do to not only solve it but also backup correctly, etc etc.

On my last 3 androids I usually got updates early and just flashed the zips in recovery on my stock androids. I've had a tough time figuring out the process on my vibrant though. Is it the same process with the vibrant? Because when I searched it seemed like Odin and kies were mentioned often but I haven't used either and I'm not sure where to start. Is there a simple zip of froyo I can flash on my stock vibrant? I really planned on waiting for the ota but at this point my nexus will have gingerbread first and then ill go back to using it daily again so I'd like to have some time with a more smooth and snappy, flash and tether enabled vibrant..

Actually I did read the stickies thoroughly before i posted this thread, the closest thing i found were instructions for installing the 2.2 version of the market which was in the really long sticky so i maybe missed what youre referring to, that sticky said the first post was about root issues but i still looked through the entire thing, both posts. i also checked the sticky in the development section. I went back to double check just now but i still dont see information about flashing froyo on a stock vibrant if its even possible. and fyi here is what i found before posting my question, these are just a few of the threads i checked. There are some "stock froyo roms" but im pretty sure they are still mods requiring root. There are many "froyo" type threads in development section. Im still trying to figure out if its even possible to flash froyo if im not rooted

Download your desired rom and save it to internal or external sd card, back up everything u don't want to lose. Flash clock work recovery , reboot into clock
Work, go to install zip from sd card, choose yours, install then reboot, enjoy.

Honestly rooting isn't even that big of a deal, what I would suggest is to go download the one click root (or use One Click Lag Fix from the market), it really is simple.
I'm not sure how to use Kies (haven't used it myself), but odin is simple, this is the video that helped me when I first flashed it. I think ODIN is only used to go back to the stock firmware which you can find on the forum.

To do the one click root, you turn on USB debugging and plug in your usb cable into your computer (don't mount the drives).
Open one click root and click root, it will copy over the files and do it's thing, then your phone will reboot into recovery mode and all you do is scroll down to "re-install packages" using the volume key and use the power key to select, then your phone will reboot once again and when it starts up you should be rooted (you'll have a super user app in your app drawer).
Then when you're rooted, you install Rom Manager from the market. After installing rom manager, flash the Clockwork Recovery (the very first option) and go download a froyo rom of your choosing from the development section. Right now, choose the option to backup your rom (just a safety net in case something goes wrong, you'll be able to come back to where you are now). When this is done, mount your phone on your computer and copy the back up to your computer. Then copy the downloaded rom to your internal sd.
Once you are flashed with clockwork recovery, all you have to do in rom manager is pick the option "Install ROM from SD Card" (assuming that you have already copied the rom to your internal sd card (not the microsd)). After this the phone should reboot and start the installation process. The advice given is to leave the phone alone for the first 15 minutes after it boots up, restart the phone, and wait another 5 minutes before messing with it.

And just to be completely clear, i take ifrom the rooting instructions and affirmations that flashing a froyo image on an unrooted vibrant is not an option...In the past I have rooted my nexus and g1 so clockworkmod/flashing in recovery, this is all familiar, I'm guessing 1 click root is similar to the nexus version in that 1 click can unroot as welll? This all sounds good so I guess ill just try to sift through all the custom Froyo Rome in dev section and try to locate a stable and as stock as possible version. I'm going to wait until later on Monday, between now and then will be my last expressed hope of hearing an update about the existence of an official froyo ota update for the vibrant. But I've read a lot about Samsung and their odd software update complex so I wont be holding my breath. But come hell or high water I will soon have full adobe flash, tethering, a smooth UI , etc., e tc., etc.

STEP ONE – RETURN TO STOCK JFD - USING ODIN
FOLLOW STEPS 2 - 4 :: THIS IS A GUIDE TO GO BACK TO JFD.
IT HAS ALL OF THE FILES NEEDED
I encourage you to use HashTab to verify the MD5 (verify it is a good download). These are large files – if it is NOT a good download you could really cause some issues. It takes 10 seconds – do it.
Once you are done, come back and proceed to ROOT.
GREAT, I AM ON JFD - HOW DO I ROOT?
You are likely still connected to your PC and booted up to the T-Mobile jingle. Great, drop the notification bar down and mount your phone...
There are two options here. Choose which is best for you, before you start.
ROOT ONLY METHOD:
A – This is an update.zip (633KB) that roots your phone only. You can then install Rom Manager from the Market to flash CWR (Clockwork Recovery) and install custom ROMs.
INSTALL CLOCKWORK RECOVERY AND FLASH A ROM THAT WILL GIVE ROOT ACCESS (MY PREFERRED METHOD):
B – use the other update.zip (1.7MB) and this will flash CWR for you – allowing you to immediately flash a custom ROM.. I do this because it's faster.
1.
A: Download this update.zip file to root your phone. You plan to install Rom Manager to flash CWR and a new ROM later.
B: Download this update.zip file to flash CWR... you will need to flash a custom ROM for Root. I prefer this method.
NOW DOWNLOAD THE ROM YOU PLAN TO FLASH
2.
Copy the update.zip (and the ROM) to the INTERNAL SD (not the external SD Card). sdcard/
3.
Unplug the USB (assuming you are still connected after using ODIN)...
Hold down volume up + volume down + Power for about 9 seconds.
If you prefer, you can power off your phone, then hold in all 3 buttons to boot into recovery, I don't see the point in waiting for the phone to power off.
This will get you to a recovery menu (blue/purple text) after some yellow text.
4.
In this (the stock recovery menu) select 'Reinstall Packages'
Use volume to navigate + power to select.
5.
It will cycle a bit, you will see that yellow text again, then it will return to the stock recovery. Select Reinstall packages again.
You are now in CWR (clockwork recovery).
You can either reboot, flash your new ROM or make a backup now...
I COVER HOW TO FLASH ROMS LATER – JUST KEEP READIN BELOW
Yeah, it is that easy!! Read below for more information if needed.... but at this point you probably are done with what you came here for. I would encourage reading below for general knowledge and making sure you are doing things as easily as possible.
OKAY, I HAVE ROOT - NOW WHAT? BACKUP!!!
** Below are a list of several things I suggest backing up **
Titanium Backup – APPS
Download Titanium Backup from the Market and Open it. The Paid version is worth it's weight in gold... it does everything automagically. Buy it if you plan to flash a lot or have a lot of apps.
Click Menu > Batch
Click on "Run" by backup all user apps
Click on Run the batch operation
All your apps are now backed up.
Please note that if you backup/restore System Apps, you are asking for problems. I do not ever mess with system apps and do not encourage it - unless you plan to stay on the same build. If you do, be smart about it.
Clockwork Recovery / Nandroid Backup!
Reboot into CWR (both volume buttons held in) while booting until you see “Vibrant'
Once there, go to Backup and run that. Should take about 5 minutes, maybe more.
If all hell breaks loose, this is a snapshot of your phone at that point... it's important to do this before flashing a new ROM!
Backup your Alternate Launcher (if you use one)
If you use a home replacement like ADW or LauncherPro, you can backup your home screen settings/icons (widgets cannot be restored however).
Launcher Pro: Click Menu > Preferences... scroll down to the bottom and click on backup.
ADW EX: Menu > ADW SETTINGS > BACKUP.
Once you flash your ROM, you can now RESTORE your settings.
Rooted... Got a Backup... let the fun begin!!
WHAT ROM SHOULD I FLASH?!?!?!
This question is asked a LOT. The most often answer? Read the development section and pick the one that seems to fit you... if that does not work, backup your apps and try another. This is a very liquid process. Things change, phones are different, people tastes are different. Try and try again.
I will point out that if you have backed up your apps, moving from rom to rom is NOT a hard process. You can ODIN to JFD and have a new ROM booting in 10 minutes. Easy.
OKAY, HOW DO I FLASH A ROM?
* I typically root/flash immediately after using ODIN. This is assuming you did not.
1 – Download the ROM to your PC. ROMs are typically 140-190+MB’s. So yeah, it’s a big file.
2 – Check the MD5 if so inclined (Using Hastab – linked above).
3 – Mount phone to PC
4 – Drag ROM to root of internal memory (the large SD card where folders like the DCIM folder appears).
Should appear as: sdcard/TheRomName.zip
You DO NOT need to rename the ROM
5 – Unmount and reboot into clockwork recovery (using Rom Manager, or by pressing in both volume buttons and power… holding… and releasing power once the Vibrant logo is up).
6 – OPTIONAL (in CWR): Do a Factory Wipe, Wipe Data, & Wipe Dalvik Cache (advanced menu)
7 – Go to “install zip from sd card”, select zip from sd... choose your ROM and flash it (volume keys move up/down, power selects)
8 – OPTIONAL (I do not do this): After flashing, choose to wipe data and dalvik cache
Do NOT factory wipe again
9 – Reboot phone
10 – Your new ROM is going to boot. Initial boot will take a LONG time (10 minutes maybe).
You may hear a lady's voice (Linda) converting your file system – this is normal if your ROM has the Voodoo lagfix. No worries.
Do not touch the phone for 5-10 minutes after it has booted... Seriously, Do Nothing!. . This helps clear any possible bugs. Once you've waited, reboot phone by holding in power for about 9 seconds (rough guess)... And then....

RESTORE!!
After the phone boots and you waited, go to Market, Sign-in, Approve terms, Re-install Titanium Backup. I strongly suggest the Paid version (MUCH better)
Restore all Missing Apps+Data.
Again, I really do little with System apps.. too many issues, but the green ones may be fine to restore.
Restore anything else you have. (ie launcher)
Reboot again.
I dont use Facebook, but I've been told you need to remove it and add it sometimes?
WHAT ABOUT IF THERE IS AN UPDATE TO THE ROM?
Let's assume you flashed Axura 2.2.6 and then a week later 2.2.7 is released... well, how do you update?
Easy, just download it, place it on your internal memory, backup using titanium backup, reboot to recovery, make a nandroid backup, flash the new rom and reboot.
Now... if you are going to try a new rom (not an update to your existing ROM), you may want to go back to stock first, then flash the custom rom.
Why go back to stock? Some say that if you are on one rom and go to another rom there may be ghosts left behind from the previous rom. Using ODIN to get back to stock and then flashing a ROM ensures this is not going to happen.
RECONDITION YOUR BATTERY
AFTER FLASHING A ROM IF BAD BATTERY IS NOTED
Use phone til it dies on it's own, completely dead.
Charge phone completely, plus 30 minutes longer.
Unplug phone from charger
Reconnect, you'll notice it's not full, charge till it is again.
This is bump charging and NOT something you want to do often, a few times is okay, in my opinion. You could skip the bump charge if you like.
Phone remains plugged in.
Boot into recovery (volumes + power)
Advanced > wipe battery stats, reboot.
Use phone til it's literally about to shut off (or does)
Charge till full +
Use phone like normal
Everyone has a method, that's how I feel it works best.
WORSE CASE SCENARIO - YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE - WHAT TO DO?
Almost always a phone is not actually bricked. If you can get into download mode or see ANYTHING you can ODIN back to stock and your phone is good to go.
If you are NOT able to get into download mode, please read the thread below to make a Jig!
TRY A NEW KERNEL/MODEM
New modems can increase signal and data speeds. Here is an incredible list of each thanks to XDA user scrizz.
Please pay notice to the version of android you are running (2.1, 2.2, etc.) CLICK HERE FOR A FULL LIST OF VIBRANT MODEMS
Kernels can overclock your processor, undervolt for battery, or remain stock but optimize things so the phone is snappier. These are always changing and there are always new builds coming out, so PLEASE review and make sure what you installing. These should install just like a rom... download, move to internal memory (sdcard/ ) and flash in clockwork recovery like you would a rom (install zip from sd).
NEED THE STOCK APPS BACK?
1 - Use the app BLOATER by Roman, it is found here!

Great idea, I think most will appreciate something like this.
I think you may want to make sure you include a section about the various lagfixes. How to install, the importance of uninstalling and of course their definitions. I think it would help clear up the forums a bit.
I am actually NOT going to mention lag fixes at all. They are not for noobs and really do not benefit the user THAT much. If someone wants to add using lag-fixes, go for it... but it's not something I am going to recommend for a noob. With froyo especially, I consider these pointless (unless you want to see a high quadrant score).
Good point, maybe you'll want to mention them as evil and not meant for the weak at heart or anyone not willing to have a nice paperweight.
How about adding something for those new users who purchased a used phone. Maybe teach then what to look for before they flash anything.
Alright, not even close to being done...but I am at a stopping point right now. Will try and pick it back up later today. Please let me know what you guys want added.

Actually... I probably was going to ODIN my phone (video 1), root it (video 2) flash clockwork (video 3) and flash a rom (video 4).....
I was cautious to accept the request to make an even simpler tutorial... frankly I spent a lot of time on the sticky and if that was not enough, well... perhaps you should not be rooting. That said, by doing this it will really clean up the sticky when it's done AND I need more space since I am running out, again.
Not many noobs asking for much... perhaps this effort is not needed?

I think that this is great thread. I did ryans oclf to root my phone, because it seemed to be the easiest way to root. I think I will undo and start over using this guide. Before There always seems to be some question popping up where I find myself wondering what was meant so I would never take the plunge into flashing a rom.This seems to be more straight forward for me. I personally would love to see the video walk through which would make everything crystal clear. Thanks for this OP

I went ahead and flashed axura 2.0.5 without any problems ( thanks to the vid on axura download page), but now I'm not sure about getting the Black froyo theme. It says to download zip and flash through clockwork recovery. Is that the same steps as flashing the rom? sorry in advance if this is a stupid question, but unless it is crystal clear I am very hesitant. thanks again

I think you download the zip to your internal sd card, boot into clockwork recovery and install the zip from there.

Thats what i think too, but not sure. Do i click on install rom from sd card to get to the theme zip file? I tried this and it brought me into clockwork recovery(?), but the install of the zip was not obvious to me. So I just rebooted and nothing happened. I know I did something wrong , just not sure what.

get - rom manager app, free or paid doesn't matter.
click the first option on rom manager, flash clockwork recovery, and chose Galaxy S Vibrant
download the nero v5 to your sd card
use rom manager and click download rom from SD and then choose the .zip wherever you put it.
then it'll ask to backup current rom, and clear/wipe data.
check the clear and wipe data, but not the current rom, if you want you can, but just check the second one no matter what.
it will reboot, and go into regular recovery, or it'll start downloading rom, if it starts saying clear data and stuff, its good.
if its on screen with blue text, click reinstall packages, now it'll reboot, in the same screen
click reinstall packages again.
now it'll be on a green text screen.
it won't do anything here since you had to reboot, so now click install from sd card
and then choose and find file.
then click yes, you navigate the recovery with volume buttons, and power, volume up is up, down is down, power button is OK/select
then the same thing will happen.
REMEMBER, THE FIRST REBOOT WILL TAKE A WHILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND IF YOU HEAR SOME VOICES, THATS GOOD TOO, IT MEANS ITS ENABLING VOODOO LAGFIX.
DO NOT REBOOT IF THE FIRST BOOT TAKES ABOUT 10 MINUTES, IF IT TAKES LIKE 20, THEN YEAH YOU GOTTA WORRY, BUT ABOUT 10 IS GOOD.

You have to be diligent to get this stuff. read it. re read it. then try it out. at least figure out how to back everything up and you don't have to worry about a thing. I get my hands on a lot of phones. I've got three of these so I want to try to mod one so I can give the other 2 to my brothers. Hello, im new to androids and rooting, and i own a galaxy s2 which i have just rooted with Chainfires CF-root which also installed Clockwork mod recovery. I have a couple of questions on how to install custom roms, for example if i would like to flash villainrom, what are the exact steps i need to take? I have read as much as possible but im not sure if the same applies to custom roms in general.
So far im thinking i have to put the custom rom on my phones sd card and then flash it via clickwork mod, however i have read something about doing a nandroid backup and data wipe bdfore flashing the rom. Ideally i would hope somebody can do a quick step by step guide explaining the above, and tell me weather this applies to custom roms in general?

Once you have rooted your phone make sure you have enabled usb debugging.
Go to settings, applications, development, enable usb debugging.
Then connect phone to pc, and transfer rom.
Then boot into recovery mode, to do this switch phone off, then press vol up, home and power.
Then wipe data, wipe cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
Then go to install zip from sd card, select zip, click ok and cwm will take care of the rest

Yes you will lose all data.
It's worth doing a backup, you can use titanium backup.
Download it from the market.
I don't tend to back things up, as contacts etc are synced and backed up with my google account.
And I just redownload my apps.
You'll find some roms don't wipe data, but it's generally advisable to always wipe before flashing any rom, and therefore backup if you have a lot of data.

You'll find some roms don't wipe data, but it's generally advisable to always wipe before flashing any rom, and therefore backup if you have a lot of data.

Yeah pretty much the same for every rom.
It's always worth reading the first post in every thread though, as I came across a rom recently that could only be flashed using odin, I think it was litening rom.
But if not 99% of custom roms can be done the way I described
And I know what you mean about needing things step by step, these forums seem very complicated at first, the best advice I can give you is to read read read.
When I first joined earlier this month everything seemed so complicated but it's fairly straight forward when you get used to it.
I now flash about ten times a day, but I have a problem lol

Sorry for the delayed reply, lol jeez 10 times a day, i get how it can be so fun and addictive though, trying custom roms and themes etc.
As i said though im new to android, came from an iphone 4 which i always used to jailbreak.
And yeah i know what you mean, im doing my best to read as much as i can, but here on xda things move so fast and theres that many different things to learn it gets scary hehe.
Im still to try and flash a rom, i was going to try villainrom first, but do you have any other suggestions on which devs/roms i should check out, seeing as all this is new i might aswell get some practice in....
I do have another quick question, when i connect my fone via usb, which folder do i put the zip rom file into, is it External SD?

I find what happens is I flash a rom, then a dev releases an update for another rom then I flash that, then I flash a different modem, then I find another rom, then another update and the cycle continues
You said you sorted it, but the rom zip file just goes in the root of your internal memory.
It's not overly important as you can find the file through cwm anyway.
As sometimes I'll download a rom through my browser and then it goes to the downloads folder.
But if I download it on my pc, I will just transfer the file to the root of my internal memory on my phone.

Yeah thanks again i managed to get it sorted i guess i overthink things sometimes, but i followed your guide above and now im running villainrom
had to do a bit more reading/asking on the backup/restore front, knowing what the diff between nandroid/titanium is etc, and how and which to use to restore.
Also you mentioned above about backing up your contacts with google, i tried to do that but couldnt seem to, how did you manage it? as i cant restore contacts from my windows pc via kies right? now that im rooted with a custom rom.

Hey, im new here, and completely new to the whole "custom rom flashing" thing.
I would like to get into rooting my phone and then installing a custom rom like resurrection for example, but I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I need an SD card in my phone, to be able to root my phone/install custom roms? or can I just use the phones internal 16gb memory?
2. Would someone be kind enough to point me to a guide to rooting/installing custom roms for complete newbies like myself? I have searched the forums, but theres so many threads about different stuff, like clockworkmod/odin/cyanogenmod etc, my head is completely boggled. I just don't know where to begin with any of it.

2. Nothing in that thread helps someone like me who is totally new. I don't know what any of it means. Surely there is a simple guide that explains exactly how to root your phone, without linking you to 7 other threads in the process? That's all I've found up until now.

ok well i tried CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5-PROPER.zip and my phone no longer boots....
tried CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5.zip and I get the same thing, so im stuck now. great.
I can get into CWM recovery, but I have no idea how to copy the rom I want to use onto the phone when its in recovery mode. This is something that is just not explained anywhere

Right. In order of importance:-
1) No bumping threads within 37 minutes. Not cool. This is not your personal tech support forum.
2) You're having problems. Why ? Who knows. We're not there looking over your shoulder so we have no idea exactly what you did. I suspect you're having problems because you are in too much of a hurry/took shortcuts & didn't do what was suggested immediately after your OP.
3) However...Given the situation you find yourself in, I recommend you do one of two things:-
A) If you are absolutely sure you have CWM Recovery & not Android recovery (I say this because if your phone isn't booting normally, that normally means the flash didn't work & normally CWM wouldn't be successfully installed either), follow whatever instructions the rom you're wanting to flash has.
Every single rom on here has flashing instructions, normally on the first post on the first page of the thread on here devoted to the rom. If you can't be bothered reading those, I can't help you.
or
B) Go to Samfirmware.com. Search for the firmware that was on your phone before you tried to root it. Download this firmware. Flash the firmware you download following the instructions here. If you also end up with a .dll file, bin it. You don't need it. This will give you a clean install of stock. From there, I strongly suggest you read the CFRoot thread very carefully before you attempt to root your phone again. I also strongly recommend you read the Stickies linked to above, so you have some sort of understanding around what's what with this phone.
If you don't, being a betting man, I'll wager there's a fair chance you'll find yourself in the situation you currently find yourself in again (best case scenario), or worst case you'll end up with a 135gm paperweight as many people have on here over the past few days.
It's all up to you now. Your phone's destiny is in your hands.

Sorry for bumping, I panicked a little when my phone wouldnt boot. I just expected it to work because I have done things like this in the past and never had problems. Im a pretty tech savvy person really, im just new to android.
I wish it was as simple as reading one thread, but there are dozens of different threads on how to root this phone, and different methods, its extremely confusing.
Im downloading the stock kernel now (300+mb for some reason, and its going to take over an hour to download)
Once I get my phone back to normal, I'll read through some more threads and try and get a better understanding on how to root my phone.
I had it rooted properly as the recovery mode stated CWM in the corner, I think the issue I had was not being able to copy the rom I wanted to use, onto the phone, because I dont have an SD card.
Anyway, thanks for the help, and fingers crossed I can at least get my phone to boot again.
Man, I've never come across anything so complicated in all my life lol.
Edit: Sorted! Flashed back to original kernel and its working as it was before I started. Thanks very much for your help mate, and at least now I know how to restore my phone if I mess it up again in the future.
just thought I would update this thread and say I finally accomplished what I wanted.
Incase anyone is wondering, this is what I did:
Restored my phone back to factory settings/firmware/kernel
Booted the phone up, and copied my rom of choice to the internal memory via USB connection, and enabled debug mode.
restarted in download mode and flashed cf-root kernel (ended up with bootloop)
went ahead and installed the rom via clockwork recovery (creating a backup first)
The phone now boots into the rom im using (Resurrection Remix)
So if anyone is a little worried by getting the bootloop (but can still get into clockwork recovery) try flashing your required rom. Your phone may boot fine with new rom anyway. Mine did.
