I just bought the HTC Sensation. My mother has the HTC myTouch 3g Slide and I had the Samsung Vibrant. My mom would like to buy a myTouch 4g but isn't eligible for an upgrade. We are thinking of selling my Vibrant and her 3g slide and purchasing a new phone outright with no contract. Is this possible? and what is the best way to sell? and how much can we get. both phones are in great shape!
Thanks in advance everyone.
You could always trade them in, Target has a decent program http://target.nextworth.com/
So far one of the better non-private party deals i have seen so far, plus target sells phones so you can use the gift cards towards a new phone
Do not trade your phone in!
Do not trade them in. They'll give you less than half of what they're worth. The best thing I could tell you is to go to ebay and check the prices of the phones to see how much they're selling for. Then do what I do, and just sell it on ebay. I'm going to be posting my mytouch 3g on ebay, as well as a samsung behold to pay for my sensation. Then next year when the new hotness is out, I will sell my vibrant to pay for that phone, just how my g1 paid for my vibrant.

Check the price of the completed listings for the mytouch slide and you will see that you can easily get $200 for a used mytouch slide, and nearly $400 for a vibrant. So yeah, like I said those trade in deals suck.
I've used Swappa.com before and loved it. Got a good price selling my phone. Only do Android phones.

How are people buying new phones from Tmo when they are still on contract? I've seen users posting about how they were on contract and just bought the G2x. Im tired of my vibrant as of late and I want to know how are people getting early upgrades. Is tmobile just letting people upgrade early? Thanks.
They might be just selling their vibrants and buying them outright. When I got my vibrant on launchday I had to call tmobile and start a new 2 year contract to get the discount.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Most people I think just buy the phone at full price. Because while in contract you are able to buy any phone you want, because the contract isnt for the phone its self but for the service.
So, in theory you could buy the newest phone from Tmobile every month and not break your contract.
Note: Only do the theory above if you are rich and have nothing better to do with your money.
buying any upgrade usually means you will end up with a different contract no matter what they say, also upgrading usually is not a good, better to just but the phone it is always cheaper in the long run
i bought my vibrant at full price. i will buy my next phone full price. i'm on a no contract plan (which is cheaper than the contract plans), and haven't had a contract with tmob for the last 3 or 4 years. as it stands right now, though, i'm not looking to replace the vibrant for probably 6 months or so. the current phones coming out don't really have any large technological jumps or must have features so far.
what's the price difference between a contract and a non-contract?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I would say, this is very hard to find a better phone than samsung vibrant. Because this phone on 2nd hand market is very frisky. You can get it very low price. The specs is not bad. I feel good with the process speed. I bought htc desire hd after samsung vibrant, but I sold it and buy vibrant back.
are we talking plan to no plan or phone with contract price to phone with out?
phone with out contract price is substantially higher circa 500 while on contract as low as 100 for a good phone. however even if you were to get the 500 dollar phone for free you would still pay more over the course of teh contract than the person off contract who purchased the phone at face value.
I used some tax return skrilla to get away from my Vibrant - G2x in da house!

I'm surprised a lot of you went to G2x. Considering LG's history of cra handsets, and an AOSP stock ROM withOUT the backing of google. This, to me, seems like a good way to find yourself with a phone that has a lot of potential, but not a lot available in the modification department (though being with vibrant for awhile, I can see why some of you may not notice a difference) I'm holding out for a dual core HTC.
You can call customer service and ask them if you can have an upgrade. They always let me. They are more concerned with keeping you on their contacts. I sold my vibrant for the same price I bought my g2x. 260 with tax.

it looks like, for my plan, it's $30/month cheaper for my two lines.
Buying full price is the way to go
As has been stated before. Buying a phone full-price with T-Mobile is the only way to go.
Now, I myself got a 2-year contract when I bought my Vibrant, but immediately started regretting it. I found out that the required internet service was $35/month (I negotiated them down to $25/month on account of I Just bought my wife a Motorola Cliq the month before, and I refused to pay an additional $10/month for no reason).
The fact is, if I had added 3g to my plan before buying a syndicated phone, it would have cost only $10/month.
In addition to this, any time you "upgrade" your phone with a new contract, they Upgrade your contract. For this reason, now and in the future, I will never again buy a contract phone so that my contract stays at the nice, comfortable place it is at.
I love T-mobile, and hope beyond all hope that this merger with AT&T stays as copacetic as they claim it will be

Yup, I was looking at getting a sidekick for my girl, but it was gonna take her from 66/mo off contract to around 95ish to upgrade.
I'm waiting for the sgs2, bring on the samoled!

There's a relatively good chance I'll just sell my vibrant and buy a gs2 when it comes out, depending on how crazy expensive it might be.
So,
I am about to upgrade to my first smartphone from my trusty old nokia flip phone. Naturally, android is my OS of choice and i am now deciding on hardware. Here is where it gets tricky... I am a member of an AT&T Family plan. I am trying to avoid spending big bucks while still getting a good phone. My two choices seem to be the HTC Inspire 4G and the Motorola Atrix. It seems i can get the inspire for 69.99 from amazon wireless, but the Atrix remains at 149.99. Does anyone know the best price i can get an Atrix for on a family plan???
thanks for any advice,
I believe RadioShack has them for 79.99 right now. I could be wrong but even if it goes up it's 149.99
You can try adding a line and keep the new phone for better pricing. Then just rent out the extra line. That's what i did. I charge my friend 30 bucks and only pay 10 a month for his line.

Best Buy has the atrix for 49.99

thanks so far
well,
radioshack is a bust. I am a "added line", so upgrading to the atrix would have been $200+.
I have thought about the adding a new line trick but i really don't think the person that is the head of our plan will go for that.
I am going to checkout bestbuy in person later today. They only have a generic upgrade price on their website, not different ones for individual plans, family plans, and added lines like all the other AT&T distributors seem to have. Perhaps this is good news. I will update this thread with whatever i find.
Any other suggestions in the meantime?
Costco (not sure if changed) but I had early upgrade (18month+ mark) family plan atrix for 129.99 when everywhere else was either 150- $200 for family plan upgrade
The inspire upgrade was even cheaper at like $20 bucks
I second the Costco recommendation. They do a great job, and have a better return policy. And they give a cheap belt clip pouch as well.
From one cloud to another.
Got mine at Costco for $119 back in March.. came with the belt clip(now using otterbox Defender), and a car charger which I liked.
The last time I went to Wal-mart they had the Atrix for 78.88.. And I think Sam's has it close to that price too. They just revamped their cellphone area in the two local Sam's clubs here..
Good Luck

Not sure what the sales person you spoke to was smoking. I've worked at Radioshack for 3 years and we've never charged different prices for "added lines" on AT&T. If you're eligible for an upgrade, you get the upgrade price. It doesn't matter if you phone is line 1, 3, or 5, the price is the same.
Now, we have in the past charged different prices for lines 3-5 on T-MOBILE but, well, the keyword there is T-Mobile.
EDIT (but not really, because I caught it before posting): Oh, I see what you saw. The Radioshack WEBSITE charges more for added lines on a family plan. Pricing does not work this way in the STORE. The online phone orders are fulfilled by a third party for our website, so they have their own rules regarding those things. If you upgrade to an Atrix in a Radioshack retail store, you will get the phone for $79.99.
Got mine at Sam's last week for $74.99.
Thanks all!
Thanks for all the info!
I now understand that in-store prices and online prices varry greatly and as a result will probably be picking my phone up from Best Buy, RadioShack or Sam's Club. I did all my shopping on the websites of the respective businesses which produced very high prices for smart-phones on family plan upgrades. Oh how i miss the days of Newegg and Wirefly ruling the smartphone pricing game.
I will be off to AT&T then best buy and the shack after work to decide between the atrix and the inspire and subsequently pick one up.
Special thanks to darkkterror for the insider info that cleared things up.
Awesome Result!
So,
After all the effort of trying to find the cheapest price for the Atrix in my area i bought it at the AT&T store. But wait... it gets better. I went into AT&T after i got off work to play with both the Atrix and the Inspire to help me decide which phone i preferred. Atrix won. At that point i asked the employees that worked at the AT&T store which one they preferred and 3 out of 4 had the Atrix. The deal was sealed. I then proceeded to tell one of the saleswoman that i was going to head out to BestBuy or RadioShack to buy the phone because it was cheaper at those locations. To which she responded; "oh, we do price matching!" I didn't even have to leave the store and i picked up the Atrix for all of $25 before tax. I don't even know why she gave it to me for that price, which sounds more like price-match/2.
I think the key to this story is what i overheard while i was being rung up at the cash register. Apparently stores in the same area compete for most sales. But they don't compete for most profit brought in, oh no, that would make far too much sense. Instead they compete for most devices sold! Thus making the price that they charge you for the phone irrelevant to the people ringing you up at the cash register. Definitely a good bit of knowledge to have when haggling with sales reps.
I am trying to get a quote on my Atrix. It is a month old and barely used. What should be my asking price ?
In absolute perfect condition 200 is going to be the most you get. Sorry if you were expecting more but id suggest you go on craigslist and look for what they are going for any actually 200 may be asking a little much
http://swappa.com/buy/motorola-atrix-4g-att
Depends on your location. In Canada, a Motorola Atrix (unlocked) goes for about $300 but varies from $250-$350 depending on condition and accessories.
You can always try cell4cash or gazelle
such a shame, the phone's specs are just now starting to be challenged by other new releases, and it came out in january. HDMI out, 1Gb ram,1930Mah battery......
you can get more than 200 dont get played
I've had my mint 4 month old Atrix up for sale on XDA and CL, and even at $225 shipped conus it still wont sell. Mint, non rooted and BL locked, all cables and og packaging.
It may just be a bad time of the year to sell.
Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk
Remember prices on these sites are asking prices. Here in Norcal I see CL ads asking above $300 lingering weeks. One ad is asking $450 has been posted for several months.
It's difficult to know but $300 seems about the point where phones actually sell. I bought one for my son for $150, but I am a patient man.
In my opinion none of the new phones are better than the Atrix. The GN has no sdcard and the RAZR battery is not removable. Both are deal killers for me.

I just wanted to post this for all of you considering getting a new phone on AT&T, such as the One, S4, Blackberry, etc. According to what I have read, it looks like AT&T is starting a promotion tomorrow that will give an instant $100 or more credit toward a new phone of your choice when you trade in your old working smart phone, ( 3 years old or less). This may help in the decision making process for many people.

It will push me back into the store tomorrow. I was in the store today and almost bought one, but I wanted to consider it a little longer and wait until the weekend. I am done thinking about it, lol.
well i already traded in a phone directly through HTC for $100 and its gonna be for a visa prepaid card. plus you have to do this in store and they dont have the 64GB version available at stores. i guess its a good deal for those that missed the cutoff for the HTC deal though.

I'd rather go on swappa or any number of other sites and sell my old kit for a lot more than $100 unless it's an old phone. Just about any decent, present day smartphone is worth more than $100. They're just catering to those who either don't know there options or don't want to deal with trying to sell on their own.

From everything I've been told, it's $100 minimum.
Just wanted to say, bought my One two weeks today and went back to the AT&T store to see if I could get in on this promo. What's great is, average selling price on eBay for the Inspire is around $80.

i just told them that i see that you guys have the trade in promotion going that you get 100 dollars for trading in your used phone. i actually read this thread wrong which is why i called inthe first place lol. because i thought they give you 100 dollars on top of what they already give you. the wife traded her iphone 5 and i traded a nexus 4. the rep gave me a 200 dollar credit no questions asked. probably because she can't see on her system exactly what phones we traded in.
I am receiving a free Moto X, if I like it, which I figure I may due to the size, on screen buttons, battery life I will probably sell my LGOG on Swappa.
The issue is that there aren't any Optimus Gs up there, and I am not quiet sure what to sell it for. I figure I should ask here and find out if anyone else has a recommended price range.
The phone is on AT&T and still sim locked, I may try to get it sim unlocked which may help raise the price. The phone is in great shape with no scratches or dings. Have Charger, Universal Car Mount, and Case for it
How did you get a free moto x??? And anyways, with all that... I'd ask probably 350?

I was thinking about getting a new Nexus 7. So I would even be willing to trade straight up.

It is. Sell on Swappa, Craigslist, or eBay for the most amount of money.
EDIT: I may have lied. Average price for the LGOG is about 227 selling. So lets say with a case, and car mount... 275. With unlocked, maybe 300. I would list it at 250 or 275 though.
