I was wondering if anyone knew a way to remap the hardware keys. I want to do this because there is no dedicated search button on the SGS II so there is no way to utilize a quick compose feature from an app like Handcent SMS which designates Quick compose as a long press of the search button or the camera shutter button (SGS II has neither of the buttons.) Thank you
anyone know a solution?
once cyanogen mod hits the gs2, there'll be options to remap buttons etc, there working on the camera shutter button (use power to take picture). youll have a solution shortly after that

My apologies for bringing this thread from the grave but this issue has been bugging me from the beginning. I'm currently using CM7, could someone enlighten me how do I enable the long press menu function to activate the quick compose function. This is the only the thing
I miss from the iphone.
For anyone who is still looking for a solution, I have discovered that if you install LauncherPro you can assign the Long-Press menu button in CM7 to Quick Compose under the SMS app you use. Also for those that use widgetlocker I created an invisible button to activate quick compose as i couldn't figure out how to get the menu button to activate it in lockscreen.

Need help remapping power key. Someone made awesome app called screen off & lock that does crt shutdown. It would be epic if we could remap power key to launch app.
whoa awesome i just downloaded it. the power button remapping would be awesome, but the long press search button isn't half bad. that's what i'm doing now.

I use voice search all the time. I would think the coding couldn't be to hard but I don't know where to look. It would be awesome if anybody could get this to work.
yeah i'm sure a lot of people use the search button, for some reason i never really need it.
with the camera hack that allows photos to be taken with the power button, and while watching videos, the power button locks the screen while keeping it on, so i know there's gotta be a way to get it to launch this activity. i just don't have any experience with this kind of stuff.
edit -
saw an app called galaxy tuner that apparently remaps buttons, but i am unable to mess with my phone while at work. give it a shot maybe?
This isn't a too much of a big deal, but curiosity kills me. Since the SGS 2 looks like it lacks a dedicated search button, I wonder if it has a substitute?
What I appreciated on my Nexus One is the search button which is excellent to Google something on the fly and to activate Voice Search. So I'm just wondering if the SGS 2 will have something to generate a quick search or if the U.S. variants will have search buttons?
like the first galaxy S i9000 , you will be able to long press the menu button to simulate the search button
And for the voice search double pressing the home button will do the trick as seen on the vids floating the web
Search seems like the biggest waste of.a button ever. Never missed it on the i9000 at all.

I never used my search-button as it is now, but if the menu-button long-press is assigned to search, how do you switch on and off the on-screen keyboard?
On other android-devices a long-press of the menu-button will activate/deactivate the on-screen keyboard.

I have a Hero, never ever have I had to long press the menu button to get the keyboard up/down. It comes up when it's needed, it disappears with a press of the "hide keyboard" button or the back button!

The hide keyboard button is only on HTCs Sense keyboard no? It's certainly not there on the stock android keyboard.
I've had instances where the keyboard blocked part of the screen and if I had pressed the back button the program would've closed/gone to a previous screen and I wouldn't have been able to do what I wanted without pulling down the keyboard with a long press of the menu-button.
It might not be a big problem or something that occurs often, but it can be annoying and that's why I ask.

You just hit the "Back" button to hide the keyboard
As he just explained, in certain programs (very few) pressing the "back" button to switch off the on-screen keyboard can quit the progrmam you are actually using. But samsung made a very neat trick for that since the first version of the Galaxy S i9000, just swipe down from the upper part of the keyboard to the bottom and the keyboard will disappear, no need for a specific button. I find it very intuitive personnaly, and in the same situation you can also swipe left or right in the keyboard area to switch from letters to numbers view back and forth.
That is an excellent feature. Do any other phones do this?
I don t know any other phone that do so natively, but there is some third party keyboards that copied that (just like CyanogenMod and everyone else copied the wifi, bluetooth etc toggles in the notification bar) "smart keyboard" or "better keyboard" I think.
Meh, I love the design but I love my search button; using Vlingo, I can hold the button and tell my phone to do whatever I want, much better than tgr default Google voice command app.

That's no big deal, you can easily fix it with a third party app.
And btw it's a matter of time for Android 2.4 Ice cream to come.. and there are rumors that it won't need buttons at all...

Doubtful... Why would I want screen real estate taken up with buttons? It works on a tablet, It would be nonsensical on a phone.
samsung hasn't actually officially confirmed if there will be a 2.4 update...

They haven't confirmed that the SGS will get Gingerbread either yet I'm running XXJVK which is Android 2.3.3.

With CM7 you can set the soft buttons to do other functions. For example you can set the search button to a different app or search app. You can set up the camera to use either volume UP, volume DOWN, or Power button to take pics. If you use the power.button to take pics you can then set up the volume UP/DOWN to zoom in/out. I have asked about this in one of the stock roms but never got an answer.

Does anyone have an answer for the stock rom rooted?
I believe they are currently tinkering with the camera app to enable this functionality.
I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the function of any of the four hardware keys at the button of the device.
For example, I do no use nor like the search key. So I was wondering if there was a way to change it so when I tap on it the applications drawer would open instead.
Any help would be awesome, thanks
I was going to suggest Button Remapper, until I saw that you wanted to open your app drawer with the search button. I used it to make the search button duplicate the menu button action for a while, but ended up changing it back.

I don't have a ton of experience with Tasker, but you might be able to get Tasker to do it.
I will check it out. Thank you

Sorry to raise an older thread, however, I am curious if you needed to do anything other than install / run the remapper app?
I am trying to get it to work, to no avail. It opens, I see the options, I change the functions from search to camera, save, apply. After I reboot, it still does the search, no camera. The remapper program also sees the 'saved' functions of camera, but still no luck.
Anyone manage to enable the on screen navigation button on s3 yet? tried the old method to set the enable navigation button value in the framework-res.apk like what we did on s2 but it didn't work.
trying to get the navigation button for my wife as the home button is not very comfortable to press and we are worry about the durability of the home button. besides, it would be a lot more convenient to have the recent app button for multitasking. holding the home button to bring up the recent task takes too much time.
Appreciate if anyone can help. thanks.
If you got root try this great application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hoopajoo.android.SoftKeys&hl=en

Hi thanks for the information, it helps. we will be using the app now until someone figures out how to enable the navigation buttons. the only downside with the app now is that it doesn't have a recent task button as well, but at least the home button is there.
