I saw the link on droid-life.com of the tear down of the tbolt. just wondering how easy it actually is to do. My screen somehow cracked (dunno how) and over a few days the crack spread and eventually went down the whole screen.
Wondering if anyone has bought one of those cheap 30-40 buck digitizers off of eBay and if they work/fit perfectly.
i'd rather pay 30-40 bucks and have the same rooted/rom'd phone then have to return the phone to stock, pay asurion 100 bucks, and then get a new phoen and do it all over again.
I know it voids the warranty but it might be worth it.
Putting it out there for thoughts...
I have replaced a digitizer on the og Droid successfully in the past, but the Thunderbolt looks to be somewhat different and possibly more difficult. If you do it properly it is better than paying for a replacement, but just be aware that you could render the phone useless if you mess up. It is your decision but personally I wouldn't want to mess up such an expensive device.
yea think i may give it a shot. I've done laptop LCD's and such before. Its pretty much the same except 10x smaller (joking)
But yea there is a teardown video which seems to be very helpful so if anything its worth a shot. Worst case if it gets screwed up i have insurance so i can always say it got "stolen" and get a new one. still $100 bucks but i figured the risk is worth the reward if it works.
If anyone has tried it i figured its worth asking to see if its easy as it looks based on the video.

I did this on my Incredible, wasn't hard at all. You will have to get a new housing also, because I believe it is glued to the digitizer and trying to get those 2 things apart is basically impossible, at least it was on the INC.
Here is the Tear down video in case anyone wants to try it

i am going to order mine sometime this week and try it. From what i have read there is no need to buy a new casing.
You just have to be really careful when using the heat gun, I was not lol.

D'OH!!!
Yea i may use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun, might be a little safer. If im successful i'll take a step by step picture of how to do it and maybe even another video.

Well, after being fairly sure-handed with phones, I dropped my Rezound on a tile floor and the screen has cracked in multiple places. Now, it should be noted that the picture is still fine, and the touch screen still works. Unfortunately, I don't have insurance because as I stated, I'm very good with phones. At this point though, I've come up with a couple different options. Potentially replacing the screen (I'm not sure if that's what I want to do because I'm not completely phone hardware savvy, and I don't want to waste money if I can't do it or screw something up), buying a new phone, or putting insurance on the line and sucking it up for a few weeks (not too fond of that, simply because I find that to be kind of a selfish move). I'm leaning towards getting a new phone, but I'm not sure what to do. I absolutely love my Rezound, but I'm a slight flashoholic and development hit a lull, though it's slowly beginning to come back it appears. I don't know if I should get another Rezound, or jump ship and get a GNex or GS3 or something different. Does anyone have any UNBIASED recommendations? Perhaps some direction to lead me in? I'm not looking to bash the Rezound or anything of the sorts. I love my phone, I love what the devs have done, and I have zero complaints unlike many others around here. I'm just a sucker for new hardware, and the GS3 just looks so tempting minus a few things.
TL;DR - Cracked screen, don't know if I should attempt to replace screen or get a new phone entirely (and which phone at that) or put insurance and wait to file claim
I would try and replace the screen... its not too hard if you buy the little tape from 3m that is used to adhesive and try to do it in a non dusty area

Yeah I would say try and replace the digitizer as well. Thats about a $30 job
I would put some 3M packaging tape on it for a temporary fix, one strip right down the middle should hold it together and keep you from cutting your finger open until you can have it repaired.

I'm in the EXACT same boat. Was getting a girl's number after the bar closed on Saturday night and she accidentally knocked it out of my hand. First cracked screen in 13 years of cell phone use. I started doing research and the parts seem cheap enough but the actual repair process seems to be an aggravation. So I'm debating $30 repair or $650 on new phone? The economics say go with a repair, but HTC's also forcing my hand on moving forward from the Rezound (since they don't want to release sources).
Just remember gnex specs are worse. That's all I gotta say.

Well after looking at a video of the repair process, I've decided that $30 is not a huge deal. The worst thing that happens is I screw up the phone beyond repair, at which point I have to get a new one anyway. At that point, what's an extra $30 when you're getting a new phone? The only downside, is there's no phone for a few days. Oh well.

This is completely true, but from a software perspective, there's a lot more development, many more options for flashing, and close to no hassle when it comes to updates. Though I love the latest hardware, and would have likely gone with the GS3.
I just got mine repaired at a place I found online cost me a little over a hundred.

After breakingg mine for the 3rd time,
1st time I didn't crack it, I tore a piece of the connector that attaches to the glass, it disabled about half the screen, I was trying to paint the "red" buttons more red. Highly recommend you don't do this and just deal with it lol. I went to look for a replacement digitizer.
Found some pretty cheap like you guys, and I purchased one. When it came in I realized that it did not come with any kind of adhesive. This was tormenting. It took me about a week to finally get some special 3m "digitizer adhesive" from china. I proceeded to install it and it came out fine.
The following day I noticed that the digitizer was lifting on the left side, and that some dust had seeped up under the digitizer.
I then spent multiple days and hours trying to get the digitizer to stay, I went threw about three different adhesives, nothing had worked long enough.
2nd time I cracked the cheaped digitizer was be sheer force ;p, lol actually it was an accident. I was in the middle of applying adhiseive strips to the digitizer and I must have gotten a bit rough with it because it snapped in my had, I'm a big guy but I have seriously sensitive hands and can control what they are doing (im an artist). So the digitizer was just cheap as hell, because I had dropped the OEM on on cement a few times prior and it didn't even scratch.
So I was pissed and went to look for an OEM digitizer. Found one on eBay, and bought it, turned out not to be OEM, but it actually did look higher quality then the previous one so I kept it, I didnt pay much for it any way, and you will probably not find an OEM digitizer short of buying a new phone.
I had just about given up on trying to keep the screen down, and after so long and and about 5 hours of installing a new adhesive it turned out ok, but I had some light leaking from the left, and had to press the digitizer down to get rid of it, and that helped for about 5 seconds. Other then that it was ok, but I still kept getting damn dust.
3rd time, dropped it on my kitchen tile floor, lol. It was funny to read you dropped it on tile too. That was the end off it, I was no longer going to spend any more money on a damn digitizer.
TL;dr Read, make fun of me, Buy a new phone.
This was also the first time I ever cracked a screen by dropping it.

My wife's Rezzie has a cracked screen. Nothing seems to have caused it. All was fine when she put it on the counter. An hour later, it's got cracks running all across it. The digitizer still works. It doesn't appear that any shards have worked loose.
A quick check on eBay shows that used Rezounds are going for around $200. That's not a great deal, since we've got a discounted upgrade available at VZW (though we'd have to extend our contract -- yuk). The phone is off warranty and doesn't have insurance on it any more.
There's an excellent repair place near where we live that can do the work in an hour, but they charge about $175. The parts seem to be available on Amazon for about $30-$50. However, the quality and results for DIY repairs appears to be somewhat mixed, and the process looks to be a bit involved.
So -- do we leave the phone as-is? Try and repair it ourselves? Send it in for repair? Buy a used one? Buy something else? Interested in y'all's thoughts.
Personally, and I say personally cuz I'm good with detail and following instructions, I'd say try to fix it your self if you mess up your out like fifty bucks and have to get a new phone anyways.. but that's just me I just ordered a LCD, digitizer, and tools off eBay for my incredible gonna give it a try my self in few days.

I got my replacement glass/digitizer for $20.
Just be careful to document all your steps if you do it yourself, as I forgot to put the pieces for the capacitive lights back in.
I just want to say right off the bat that I severally appreciate anyone who tries to help me.
All right, so I decide to take my precious GNII out of it's case for like an hour, 'cause I haven't held it without one for a while. Low and behold, I drop it clumsily onto my kitchen floor and the screen cracks on the upper left-hand corner. Thankfully it's not the entire screen, but it's glaringly obvious and super upsetting. I can definitely feel it with the s-pen.
I was wondering what you guys think I should do? I could probably deal with it for another year, but I want it to have re-sale value. Putting up with it also isn't the idea I'm fondest of. Would I get used to the cracks eventually? Money definitely matters here, considering I'm just a high school student without a job.
I looked up some videos on screen replacements, and it appears that if I just wanted to replace the glass (which would be cheaper than LCD, digitizer, and glass), I would have to do this entire thing with a hair dryer and what not. Should I do that? Or is it not worth the hassle? If I don't want to do that, would I have to shell out 250$ dollars for a full ditigzer+glass replacement? Is there anywhere I could send it that you recommend?
I feel whine-y coming to you guys with my problem, but I'm pretty desperate here. Again, I really, really appreciate any help that you could afford to give to me at all. Thank you so much and have a great day.

Staples sells screen replacements over the counter, sort of, you pay, send off in contained envelope, phone gets returned fixed, devices vary by brand and size of course, may be worth giving them a call, craigslist also seems to have local service adds in for sale section, search cracked screen, or screen replacememt, places doing iphones and ipods would/should have the capabilities.

Hey, so I cracked my One X+ screen quite badly, it fell on it's side on a wood floor, and it cracked.
Thing is, this isn't a normal crack, if I put it in my pocket, I end up with pieces of glass everywhere, and if I use it, my fingers get cut and bleed, so I can't use it right now.
I am not a handy guy myself, so I won't even try fixing it, I've been checking out some places, they seem decent, but they mostly do iPhone repairs. One of them quoted me $150, and another $130
The $150 has a 5-star yelp rating, but then again, iPhone screens (from what I know) are fairly easy to replace
I'm so pissed at myself, because I never wanted to use a case, as the phone is really sexy and feels good.
I e-mailed corning for the gorilla glass damage, which was weird, and they said that they will pay me $200 for the phone and they will (obviously) keep it for research (Probably replace the screen and sell it?)
I'm so worried, because after reading around, it seems that HTC One X screens never end up looking good, and I can imagine that being worse for the X+, as it is a bit more rare.
The screen is cracked on the side, and those cracks extend all the way to the other side of the phone, but on the left side, the glass is just destroyed.
Will post pics later
Wow, that sucks bud. I broke the screen on my SGSII last year and just chucked it and bought a phone on E-bay.
I replaced the screen on an I-pod and it was pretty simple. I did a lot of research before I did it and it turned out good.
I don't know what to tell you as far as replacement. If you got $200.00 for the broken one and could find one on E-bay for $450.00, you would have a replacement for $250.00. Just a thought.
Best of luck and post some picks when you can.
Steve
Yeah, I'm mostly discarding that option. I do wonder if its actually possible for the phone to end up decently after one of these repairs

I spose if you found someone qualified to do the repair, it should be like new when it's done. Be sure they use a good quality screen and digitizer for the repair. Should even consider using a direct HTC replacement. Of course that will up your cost.
I spose it depends on what you are willing to do for your phone. How bad do you want your HOX+ back??
I would just send it to HTC, cost me 180 british pounds, the good side is that you will get a new unibody, and a full service on the insides of the phone. I think its well worth it, and it keeps your warranty in play.

I don't care much about the warranty, if it dies I'll replace it, thing is, I can get upto $150, since I'm a high school kid, and (this is serious!) my parents said that if I break my phone, they're not replacing my phone in the next 2 years.
So they don't know.

The One X and One X + are definitely a difficult replacement. You need to FULLY clean up the old adhesive and take your time or you will get bad results. You also need to use the right adhesives to get good results. It would cost about $10 to $15 to get a role of adhesive you could use (trimming needed in tight areas) that would do about 50 phones.
Take your time and be thorough. Also be REALLY carefull with all the flex cables or you will be screwed when you put it back together.
I have fixed about 25 of the One X and one One X+ and its a minimum of 1.5 hours of work for me now and I know exactly what to do.
Thread has been closed as there is another cracked screen thread currently open. Duplicate threads are not allowed
Well it finally happened. I completely shattered the glass on my Note, fell out of my hand about 5+ft in the air and landed basically glass down. Luckily it still works fine so I just need to replace the glass itself not the entire screen. Right now the screen protector is the only thing holding it together I think.
Here's what i'm thinking of grabbing to replace it:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C0NGTIW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3I0LAK8U3EE99
Any thoughts on that product? For the price i really want to just try it.
Lol at them trying to say it's 129 and you are getting some deal. You can get these on eBay and everywhere for ten to twenty.
I highly suggest you watch some videos as the processes can be a bit intense separating the glass from the digitizer.

I would also like to suggest you make sure you know what you are getting into. Its been done enough times that I dont doubt you can pull it off, but its not as simple as some phones were in the past. That digitizer is really stuck onto the display.

I've watched a good amount of videos and I am fairly confident it won't be an issue. I have all the tools and do things like this as a hobby anyway so I have the patience for it. I'm just worried about the quality of the product. It looks fine, and the reviews seem okay so I might just bite the bullet and buy it. If it is terrible i'm only out 10 dollars.
