Harmful App(s) in the Market - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody!
Last time I gave my new s2 to my girlfriend, she installed an strange app from the market called pesoguin sakura dance (free) (should be on top if you search "tamagotchi" - it was surely the last time i handed it over to her haha).
Reading a comment like "damaged my phone" about the app unsettled me a bit and leads me to the question, if an app from the market could damage my/a phone irreparable?
I tested that app with lookout and didn't find anything. If you look on over 260 averaged 4 stars ratings and 50 - 250 000 downloads you shouln't think that there's something wrong. But, as i said, there's that comment; and i heard from another guy that there could be apps, which change the os of a phone.
Am I too careful and there's nothing (with this app) that should upset me or are there apps which do sth without me realizing anything.
Thanks.

Reason being it's a pretty stupid question
Unless the app *gets* (by that I mean, you approve) root access, it ain't screwing anything up...
It's always a good practise to read over the permissions the app requires and ask yourself "Does it really need these?"
Btw... please uninstall Lookout...

hmm..stupid question, ya?
so i heard sth. what you obviously didnt hear, namely that there are definetly malicious apps which get root-access without me approving that.
and please get me in the enjoyment of your knowledge why i shouldnt use lookout

Pretty sure Superuser would pop-up with any request for root access, don't think there is a way around that...
I am against running an Anti-Virus/Malware client on my phone. IMO it's a stupid idea. I don't want to get in an argument, if you want to run Lookout or similar apps, I'm not going to stop you. It's like the 'why use a Task Manager/App-Killer' argument...

i dont think that he has asked a stupid question, asked people if they know of any dangerous apps isnt a bad question. you say su would pop up if it was going to be something bad, but you assume he is rooted

I feel a valid concern has been raised in the OP.
The apps available in the marketplace should be vetted but as we know its not.
after rooting the phone...it more or less becomes like the home PC.
personally i download apps only from big corporations...but i do understand most ppl like to try out new & tempting stuff on their phones...
since i access lots of personal accounts from my phone, i keep away from apps which comes from sources i havent heard before...
ignorance is bliss at times...

I don't think he asked a stupid question either. I have found a few malicious apps in the Market that download unwanted garbage to your phone. It surprises me that the Market does not screen out such apps before posting.
That said, I think he definitely needs a new girlfriend.

I can get round the superuser popup on many phones... So it's not enough to rely on that alone.
I suggest you do run a reliable AV program if you are at all concerned

Btw, few apps are likely to cause serious harm.
If something gets root, in theory it can cause a lot of damage, but normally they aim to quietly install other files without you knowing.
So if you want to start clean, remove and wipe your sd, clear all app data, and reflash the latest rom via odin or kies
If an app had root, it could have modified your system partition, so the reflash matters.
But in theory, someone could delete everything from your phone, or brick it (on some devices), though I am not aware of any such apps

yes there are very dangerous apps in Android Market like this one for example Albanian Keyboard wich is steals all u data like a key logger and no one in there are doing anything to ban or remove that crap

Shouldn't be that problematic especially as most security holes are patched in gingerbread. AFAIK the most viruses are only able to harm FroYo and lower OS'es.

[Q] Detach Titanium Backup from Market

Sorry, I meant the list in Titanium Backup with all my apps.
You can fix this by buying the legal version and showing your support for the dev. It's not very expensive (a little over $6) and it's worth every penny. Definitely beats messing around with illegal and possibly sketchy cracked versions.

This does though. Although it is probably not the answer you were hoping for.
Basically, this being primarily a developers' forum, people will always look down on any attempt to use pirated/cracked apps and thus steal from the developer. So you can't really expect an answer that will promote and encourage piracy. Especially given that most Android apps are ridiculously cheap.
(To ACTUALLY answer the question - the only thing I can think of is marking all apps except for TB for auto-updating in Google Play.)

[Q] App "Superuser" containing malware? Possible?

Hello to everyone!
Maybe it's a stupid, noob question, but I googled for this without success.
And even a search in these forums was not helping, so... let's start!
It's saturday morning here and I start my weekend in one of the most disappointing ways...
Some minutes ago, my Galaxy Note showed a red icon in the status bar. I checked it, and it was Zoner antivirus. Hooray!
The malware that it found was exploit.AndroidOS.Lootor.A, and I don't know what it is, but it really sounds bad.
The disappointment went worse when I discovered that the malware (according to this antivirus) was in the latest Superuser update. Something I'm not going to uninstall without thinking twice.
What should I do? I think I'm going to follow my elephant-phone's suggestion and uninstall the update, since it's telling me that I can use "the original version" (at least, in Italian the message I see means literally that).
If you tell me -as I think- that it is just a false positive, I'll be happy to reinstall any update, but anyway I am asking for the opinion of more experienced users.
Thanks in advance!
PS: while I was writing here, there were some evolutions in this problem.
I followed the instructions and uninstalled some update (or at least the phone told me so).
Now it seems that Superuser should be uninstalled because it has inside
exploit.AndroidOS.GingerBreak.A
HELP!
I'm not going to uninstall superuser (I think I couldn't anyway), but I am worrying now!
PPS: ok googling exploit.AndroidOS.Gingerbreak.A I found that it is a false positive, so I assume that also exploit.AndroidOS.Lootor.A is safe... but I still would like some confirmations, I am quite new to Android and this is not the way I want to learn lol.
Virus scanners on android truly are pointless. They will pick up anything that changes the root permissions llike Super user or the root exploit. As long as your not using apks from iffy sites like 4shared or something you will be fine.
So how can we solve that?... I found a couple of apks on APPLANET that lead to a GAME CASINO on real market... Strange but that´s look like a virus to me...
Thank´s in advance.. Cem..
Don't use applanet unless your begging for a virus or to have your phone make calls to long distance numbers and send texts to paid account. Also no one on XDA will help you with any black market app markets.

I'm not expert enough yet to discuss your point, it just seemed weird to me since it is the very first problem I had with an android anti-malware software. I've run Superuser for something like two months without any warning...
Anyway it's solved now, even if not in the best way. Something messed up in my beloved phone when I rebooted it one moment after my last post... I had to re-synchronize all my accounts and to reinstall most of my apps, it seemed that my phone lost all app data.
Now it's ok (luckily, I've learned enough 'til now to bring it slowly back to normal) but the procedure was painful.
Great lesson here: wether you consider antimalware useful or not, don't rely on it more than on good ol' common sense!
PS: anyway, why are they pointless? Aren't they able to find possible problems? I've recently learned that "possible" problems aren't necessarily problems, but it seems strange to hear that they are useless... just an explanation please.
Always good to have a virus scanner on you're android mobile. Even i've you only downloading wrom the market it can be infected (Very small change). Nothing is secure in this world. Better to have protection one time to much then to have it to late. How more popular android is going to be, how more change you can have for infections. Even its still low. Lookout cost nothing and says nothing about my superuser and other rooting apps. I use it on my tablet and phone and it works great.
Recently read a test and no Antivirus App was able to find more 15% of the Viruses, plus they always slow my phone down.
Best solution for me is being cautious and checking permissions.

i think it might be a good idea for all that root their devices to first understand the concept of a false posotive virus scan result
also it may be worth understanding that from anti virus software standpoint any alteration to system safety may be undesirable as its designed for the end user who doesnt even know what root is ..
increasingly android caters for 2 markets, the sort of people who come here and probably own about 30 devices including pcs tablets phones etc and love tech.
and the other market of people who own a pc with xp on it and one phone, only running android because thats what the salesman sold them - and not because they insisted on Android.

Oh I have to agree. Too many people get Android because its cool and then they root because they think its cool. They should understand what they are doing before they make a choice for the OS on their phone.
If you think running Linux is too much trouble to run and keep up on your computer why would you run it on your phone when it takes just as much to keep up?

Yes, but you know, I had the naive hope that an antivirus for Android should check if an app is going to do a bad use of the permissions I give to it.
I.E. : I see a game that requires internet connection for multiplayer. It's ok, isn't it? In a perfect world, an antivirus should check if that game is going to connect to its multiplayer server or to a bad one... (it's just an example, I think that important brands aren't likely to lose their reputation that way)
Anyway, would you suggest me to give Avast a try? At least, I've seen that it has decent anti-theft features...

Please receive this feedback as intended, respectfully and well meaning...
if your finding yourself having concerns when an anti virus flags up your rooted status and yet you still feel the need for an anti virus package i suggest you un-root and keep to a stock kernel - this way the anti virus software will inform you of any possible intrusion or system change.
if however you must have root i think you need to simply come to understand more about what the anti virus packages can do .. or actually what they are limited to doing - might i suggest spending some time learning about a popular linux distribution too as it will bring about a different frame of mind and then you will realize that the anti virus software flaging SuperUser as a virus is actually neither true or a false posotive .. its just working from a different set of perspectives to that of a confident root enabled computer user .
i hope this makes sense without coming across in the wrong way, i just really think people should learn from XDA and the devices they buy & come to XDA for help with .

I was kinda sure that Superuser had to be safe, but lack of experience made me fear that somehow I could have downloaded the wrong package, or something...
The weirdest thing, is that Superuser and antivirus have been there together for a while, so I wondered what on earth was happening.
Well, I've done a mistake and now I've learned something... it's ok.

This was interesting.
First of all, I am not offended at all and I don't understand how I could.
Well I could probably live without root (except for a couple of useful apps)... but I'm not going to un-root it for now.
I am a sturdy guy and I want to learn everything (everything I am interested into, I mean) about this OS. Trying and trying again, at the cost of some little problems if needed.
As for Linux, almost all my PCs have also it inside (win7 mostly for games), and I have never had a problem worth this name when using it. Never had something like an antivirus there, just some common sense and everything was fine.
I think I should have the same attitude towards Android as many of you have suggested. And I am willing to get some more info about android's antivirus limitations. Just because I'm curious.
Can you suggest some particular post here in xda?
Thanks again!

A guy simply asked for .apk and you come up with a psychotherapy or marriage counselling ? Are you kidding or sth ?
Get kids first then you'll know why it's not so easy to dump a wife...In majority of western countries and EU wife gets sole rights over the kids after divorce no matter what (unless you can prove drugs / insanity)
Also don't be so sure these days about wives sticking to their husbands & status quo.
Kids is not really a magnet...Mortgage usually is but selling a house is easy...
You will not find any info here about keyloggers. They are illegal and in so against XDA rules.

Same. Some stupid policies and some stupid myths. Perhaps there used to be some sort of warez there accidentally and everyone is still being anal about it. As you can see mods don't really care about this phone. You can see by posts like "I would never get their devices". So childish

It's not a matter of childish. I have many reason why I would never own one of their devices and that being the fact that the oem is on my jobs banned list.
Also all you have to do is look at any of the so called. Free apps that are paid apps on the Android market.
Make no mistake it was not accidental at all. China is known for things like this.
As for the mods. We have been around long enough to know the story with them so, no none of use would ever touch one of their devices. But that is pointless as it's up to the users to do something with it.

You can look yourself. Just do a compare between the 2 stores. That was part of the reasons why miui roms were banned for the longest time.
You have to remember that MIUI started here on xda before Xiaomi bought them out.
Warez or not, MI Store sucks ass, but banning ROMs is pointless, MIUI forum is trash, I still don't know how it works, and some ROM's has backdoors and for example, they send paid SMS to vietnam, That sh!t costed me 50 bucks!!!

If you look around the internet you will find all the stories you need. They are alos on the military banned list in the US due to ties with the Chinese military.

Thank you, but I suppose if we use non MIUI rom such as cm, then these risk of using xiaomi devices is gone right? also, what do you think of Mokee Rom? As it's also made by chinese people, and you said that china is known for "something", is it might also poses similar risks?

First let me make one thing very clear. I have nothing against Chinese people that make software. You have to understand the Government that runs the country there, to have a small understanding. You see In china they have the right to monitor everything their citizens are doing on the internet. This is part of the reason for the great firewall of china. So spyware, malware and other software that helps in this are normally sponsered by the Military to help in doing just this.
I have never used it myself but as it is an open source based OS it should be good. You can see just what it is doing. The hard part will be the coding translations, as things dont always translate right.
Any non MIUI based rom should be ok. The problem with that is CM is normally buggy and all the roms use the patch rom setup which is never really stable nor is it something I would trust as that is injecting stuff into a rom that I cant VET.
In this day and age one has to be careful with all these new toys that are coming to many markets across the world.
Remember, You get what you pay for. So if something is too good to be true then you have to find the catch.

Great explanation, Thank you, sir.

You are right about the store, i was quite surprised when i found paid apps there. This is correct.
But i'm not sure if this is still the case, i saw them a year ago, now i couldn't find the apps,
maybe they've cleaned the store in meantime.
And a script removing apps isn't hard, just search for "updater-script remove apps".
BUT i've tried such script on Sony Xperia P, not in MIUI, i don't know if deleting Mi Store (com.xiaomi.mipicks) would cause bootloop or not.
I know that Mi Store enabled/disabled is region dependent, you can disable it when switching to another region in Beta rom.
But deleting? I know that when i've deleted Updater apk, or changed its permissions, it caused bootloop. Needs to be confirmed.
But with government spying - if you want to be honest - maybe we should ban all ROMs tied with Google, which means all Androids?
Remember about PRISM and Edward Snowden?
American's NSA (National Security Agency) ?
I have nothing to American people, just sayin.
But according to former CIA employee, Edward Snowden, Google joined to the NSA spying program in 14 Jan 2009.
I think that you simply have a choice - either give your personal data to American or to Chinese people. (or both).
You can minimize the risk by disabling for ex. Analytics app... etc.
But saying that chinese are spying... USA govt does the same
And better not looking for Echelon project...
But - the main topic here - yes, it's a good idea to remove Mi Store from roms.
One can always add it himself/herself, there are also other stores, F-droid, Aptoid, there is a choice
American companies aren't communist nor are they guilty of some of the most sever human rights violations in the world.

Why not install a different rom? I think some don't even use gapps or can sandbox them.
edit: Here's a new thread maybe that could be a good starting point.

Then compare it as designed. Log in. Otherwise you're not doing the factory rom justice.
if by justice you mean features that require internet and my personal information and habits, those are features that i dont need or will ever use.
if you are talking general speed and battery usage and functioning with the apps i use the most, then logging into google on my phone is not needed.
the phone might have the power to calculate the need parameters to build a space ship and put a man on mars, but using that power to smooth out my crows feet, socialize online looking for 5000 likes and 2 millions followers , is not a improvement in tech use.

If you know what you're doing you can log in with a Google account and not give out all the information you mentioned. There are a lot of privacy concerns these days all you need to do is some research. I'm sure you can figure something out that will accomplish your goals. Good luck.
Try freezing Google systems and Play services.
There are different apps that can do this, but you will need root.

I think he means not cutting off your nose to spite your face. Google credentials are needed for Play Store, like for keeping Carrier Services and whatnot updated. It's possible to push back against data harvesters while using stock Android, especially with root access. But it sounds like you'd rather take your concerns to the next level with something like CalyxOS and a Play Store alternative.
the only thing i dont want is to log into anything to use what i paid for.
the device is not crippled, its rooted and i have already installed 150 apps and disabled everything google i can disable.
i dont want the google experience, i want to experience the device i bought.,

So, you don't want the Google experience yet you bought a Google-branded phone? Just a bit of an oxymoron there. Seriously, while I could ask why you bought a Google phone if you don't intend to use Google services, it would be a pointless waste of time and energy.
Install a custom ROM that doesn't use Google services and don't look back. Just don't complain when you can't take advantage of a Google-exclusive feature as a result.

I truly do not understand people like you.

You do realize that as a society we are all walking around with computers thousands of time faster than we had sitting on our desks 20 years ago. That have dozens of sensors, connected to wireless networks, that can cover nearly every inch of the surface of the planet. What you're worried about is what we (the collective nerds/geeks/privacy advocates) were screaming at the top of our lungs back in the 90s...before it was too late.
It's too late son, That ship sailed, sank, was resurfaced, and put into a museum so younger generations could see what it was like in the way back when before times.
Good luck with your quest to use factory google pixel phone and rom without a Gmail account. That's surly the only way they are tracking you.

Everyone read what you wrote don't be a martyr. The fact remains you didn't get an answer yet you continue to berate members here trying to guide you in a direction that is concurrent with reality. You seem to be delusional and contrary, simply looking for an argument and to make your voice heard over reasonable discussion. It's not working. We tried to help but you will have none of it. So perhaps it's time to find another place where your diatribe will matter. As I said before, good luck.

i have zero problem with getting no answer, but a huge problem with jackasses that post only to insult me.
no one should ever feel they need to put up with **** like that

let me guess you have nothing better to do but try ****ting on people. maybe you should go to reddit and not be someplace people try to learn about their device and what you can customize.

It wasn't productive from the first post. It simply is an excuse for him to rant and rave about how Google is a data whore and all that. I can understand that, as I once was like him. Perhaps I am in the wrong here for being so blasé over Google's data collection, but I stopped worrying years ago about it. I figured the benefits outweighed the liabilities.
It's rather entitled to expect to have all the benefits of a smartphone while having none of the liabilities. I think if I were truly that worried about data collection to rant about it in a public forum I wouldn't be using a phone at all. After all, every phone made today, from the most expensive smartphone to the cheapest dumbphone, has sensors in it that can track you, even when the phone is off.
To the OP, TANSTAAFL.
