Okay so i have seen a few threads on this but none of the Atrix. i know phones automaticly resize pictures, but not THIS bad. i just sent a 1mb picture to my phone from hotmail and it seriously made it look 10kb. really? it looks like giant pixels LOL, whats the point of MMS if you can't even see details of the picture. it seems i can send decent size pictures, but recieving them is a different story. i have tried GoSMS, Handcent, and stock messaging app. It did this on stock ROM and does same on gingerblur pROM. My last phone was the HD7 and it had NO problem like this, before that i had the mytouch 4G and it had no problem as well, even the mytouch 3g, and 3g slide i had didnt lmao. This is the first att phone ive had, maybe its something to do with them? everyone else that has had this problem only has seemed to have it with sending pictures, not recieving.
I just did a test and sent the same picture twice from my GMail to my phone. In the first I attached the picture and in the second I copied it into the body of the email. Both pictures came through to my phone as mms in their original size. I know this doesn't help solve your problem, but it might help in narrowing it down for you. BTW, I am AT&T.

okay, i will try it on my Gmail account. maybe it is hotmail. I actually use Tmobile, i was just saying its my first actually att phone. lol
lol look how much smaller it made them. 6XXkb to 20kb. -_- 1440x990 to 160x110. i REALLY hope motorola unlocks the bootloaders so we can get other ROMs on this thing. this is rediculous lmao.
Did some research. Apparently T-Mobile resizes pictures to 160 x 120 if they are larger, and if they are on a cell phone which T-Mobile does not sell. Might want to call them and ask about this. You will see the following under the "Mobile-to-e-mail or e-mail-to-mobile" section:
"NOTE: All images will be resized to match the recipient’s phone’s capabilities. If the capabilities are not known (such as phones not sold by T-Mobile USA) images will be resized to160 x 120 pixels if they are larger."
http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm21396.xml?#m-to-e
Same issue here, everything gets dumb resized.
My iPhone 4 would resize too, but not this bad.

If using Go SMS, upping the MMS size limit and checking the "preserve image resolution" box seems to do the trick for me.
Now, if the Gmail app would ask if you would like to resize like the iPhone, I'd be happier.

i have tried this and it didnt work. im wondering if there is some setting or hack/mod to make it seem like its a tmobile phone.. like HD7 or something. seeing some people do it on Nokia and other phones but cant find anything on this.
btw, do you have tmobile??
I was on the phone with tmobile, then called att. they put me on the phone with motorola, the rep put me on the phone with a tech class 2 and none of them could solve it. im sure its what the other guy said. reading some other forums and other people are having the issue with other phones. this is so irritating.

This is the mms.apk I've been using

You have to push it to /system/app, then
freeze text messaging and message with titanium backup.
remember to set the right permissions to mms.apk (chmod 0644, I'm almost sure)

yeah i figured out that it was because i was using CM7 mms.apk.
i found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999711
apparently it has some "known bugs" do you know if the mms.apk you are using has any issue? apparently sometimes it sends your text to the wrong person..
i set it to nokia n95, now pictures are abour 230kb.. better than 20.

I think that those problems were in early versions of cm7, not sure. At last I've never had that issue.
Try using custom ua, and set a newer phone that your carrier are selling.

I don't know about that! Because I've had this same problem and I'm on at&t! Ill send an animated gif to someone thats between 500 kb and say 3 mb and it will convert it to around 12 kb when it converts it to an mms! I've tried messing with all the settings and different sms apps such as handcent, gosms, and a ton of others even some chinese ones where I couldn't even read the damn thing and nothing helped! I just rewiped my whole phone and am gonna attempt it again now! I don't understand why it was doing that!
Edit: Actually mine is a sending problem not a receiving problem so I guess my problem is a little different.

This didn't used to happen, but I noticed it about a month and a half ago. Early on with this phone picture messages would come in fine...I could click on them and they'd look normal when they open up in the gallery. Those messages from then still look fine and function normally. But any picture messages I've received in the last month or so don't work right...They download to my phone (when I have mobile data on, which makes sense), but there's a play button over the picture. When I click on it it it opens up the photo but it looks tiny and I can't zoom in or anything or open with the gallery, etc. If I longpress the message without opening it, it only lets me play as slideshow which is still reallllly small. If I "download attached to SD card" it saves in my file system and when I open it up later it looks normal. But I don't want to have to download every picture message I get to my SD card just to look at it...
What's the deal here? I use GoSMS but I got this problem sometime after I started using that. Either way, the problem occurs in my stock app as well. I can't remember if this coincides with when I flashed GingerBlur or not...
FYI, this happens when I get messages from any iPhone AS WELL as friends with android phones. Any thoughts?
EDIT: also, if anyone thinks it IS GoSMS though, let me know! I don't remember this happening when I first started using it, but I dunno I'm willing to try all possibilities. Maybe a rogue setting in GoSMS is screwing it up?
Not GOSMS. I get the problem with the GingerBlur messaging, as well as stock Atrix messenger.

Interesting, so that should mean GoSMS, the GingerBlur flash or the stock GingerBread messaging app aren't causing it...hmmm...
This is an android issue. Had the same issue when using my nexus one, Dell streak 5 and now the Atrix. It sucks. Never found a way to fix it. Some messages used to come through fine but I haven't notice any work lately at all. They all come through like a small video file and are much smaller in size unless I copy to the sd card.
I'll try to grab some friends phones ( evo 4g, epic 4g, droid x) and see what it's like on their phones.
I also noticed that with animated gifs as well! They are showing up to people as pics only and are very small in size no matter how big they originally were! It's quite aggravating and I tried gosms, handscent, chompsms, and a crapload of others and none are working right!
This is not a problem... This happens when the MMS has several "slides", for example, a picture and some text.
If it only includes a picture, you see it directly.

I see. That's quite absurd, and even if it isn't a real Android problem, this should be changed...
I've seen a few people ask about how to increase the MMS file size limit so I figured I'd post up this easy way to do it.
Download GoSMS from the market if you don't already have it installed
(I've attached Screenshots for you to follow along)
Go to Settings, click the "Advanced" tab, scroll down and click "MMS settings"
Click on "Maximum MMS size"
Set to desired file size limit.
Then press back button
Check the box to "Preserve image resolution"
And BAM, your done. Easy Peasy.
Even though I have no 4g here in Phoenix AZ, I usually have it set to 2M. It usually takes a little longer to send on 3G but I can confirm that it does in fact send.

This is good, but trust me. A few years back, people were walking around the office taking video and sending inter-office e-mail. One I liked and tried to send via MMS to family. No good. I then took like 10 second video to send, same thing, no good as it was too big.
Take 15 hour video and attach to e-mail! Then send to:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
(whatever, you get my point!) but it does the same thing! The only thing bad with Sprint is, you do not have use of your phone while transmitting! My "15 hour video" comment was a joke (and you would be stupid to try it) I did like 2 minutes of HD and it tied up my phone for like 10 minutes or so? WiFi would likely be better?
Well that's a good point but when comes to sending an email attachment just use regular email and every smart phone is tight to email account anyway and accomplish is the same, the struggle is how to send mms and either the phone or provider on either site compresses the attachment.

Hey Guys.
I've been looking at how to do this for ages but...GoSMS is all well and good but, I like the stock SMS app...Its a little more...lets say, less "permisiony"...
But how can one do this change with the stick SMS app?? Is there an XML file you can edit?
Thanks.
Did you ever get any resolution to this? I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition and definitely want to stick to the stock messaging app, but outgoing photos attached via SMS from the camera are compressed to garbage. They're tiny and horrifically artifacted... it's killing me.

No fix for this then? i just sent a text on my one plus and its 90kb, danggg
I just tried this on my VZW S4 and it seems to work for sure at 2mb. HOWEVER, when attaching pix it does not give any means to pick "gallery" so that I can pick images to attach from their files, instead, taking you straight to what appears identical to the factory installed "picture" app where all images are shotgunned onto a single HUGE page. Can this be fixed?
Other than that, I love the app as it does give a better detailed report with each post time and DATE stamped as well as a little green check to indicated received. The stock messaging doesn't do that and also will not allow you to request a read receipt without getting the same audible notice that you get when receiving a message.
Hi, This is my first post and i need help, I was texting with my new phone (SGS3) in the stock messaging app, and i wrote an SMS (4 Pages) and suddenly the SMS was automatically converted to MMS, and there is no option to disable this horrible and ridiculous feature, and theres also no option to turn it off! So how can this be possible? Such an expenssive phone, and you cant even write freely an SMS??? Why is there a limit of 3 pages? I was wondering if someone could do a MOD to fix this! I had the same problem with the galaxy note, and there was a little mod that could fix that, so i think im not the only one that want this fixed! (i dont like custom ROMS or anything like that, and i dont like apps like GoSMS, or stuff like that, i just like the stock messaging app, but with the fix) i just want PLEASE a little mod to fix this BIG problem. (Sorry for my english)

Thats not what i asked for, i mean.. im coming from an iphone 4s and that never happened, in fact it never happened to me in all the phones i have had!! So, i dont see the point of converting an SMS automatically to MMS just because i write more than 3 pages, thats just ridiculous But the thing is, that i would like to know if someone could do a MOD for the stock messaging app to fix that and make it without characters restrictions! To explain it better this is what i want for my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371755

i'm pretty sure that's not how it works, SMS longer than 160 characters get sent as multiple SMS which then then recombined back into one sms on the recipients phone. I've had the issue before when one part of a multi SMS message was delayed causing me to have the first or second half only and when the other one arrived sometime later the phone still knew to combined them together.
MMS is only when you attach a picture, video or voice clip to the message.
I have just tested what the OP has said and its true, if you type a long SMS, after the 3rd set of 260 characters, (there is a counter just above the send icon) it then gets converted to a MMS
But to the OP, I do wonder why you would want to type such a long SMS on a regular basis? you can also just send the sms at 3 pages then send a new one.
Can't you just send after every two pages. Yeah, it cost more but it will solve your issue.

Sms are limited to 160 characters (Per Page), And when you write more than 3 Pages, it will automatically convert your SMS to MMS without asking or option to disable, it will just convert it to MMS. (it will convert it even if you dont attach ANYTHING, Even if it just based on text)
Use Go sms... But this is stupid...
S3 shouldn't do that...
Lol at the Wattsapp suggestions

Wow I just realised that there is no option to cancel this 'feature' after I read your thread.
I do hope this is resolved since for those on Payandgo networks, like me, MMS isn't always free whereas practically even mobile plan has free SMS. Defeats the objective here, you can send very long SMS texts (counts as more than 1 but still sends fine) from other phones no problem. On the galaxy nexus it was possible to disable this SMStoMMS converting problem easily, I hope the devs come up with a workaround..

Who still has data rates for SMS and MMS? I thought this stuff was free now? In Australia SMS for free is pretty much standard and most plans have at least $500 of credit included, an MMS costs max 0.50c, is this seriously an issue? Just use a different messegeing ap or use an instant messenger.

Guys, am I right in saying that this was always a problem with stock messaging app? Hence most custom ROMs have a modded 'No MMS convert' message app? I remember this limitation on my stock SGS2 back in the day - dont remember this ever happening to me after custom roms.... or maybe I never sent over 3 pages.......
I just tried Texting over 311 characters from my SGS2 to my SGS3 and them back..........No MMS converting.... One whole page too....
Therefore this is not a problem with custom ROMs...

Thank you for the amusement, OP. I'll be taking my +1 now.
So I always thought other peoples phones just sent a picture at a smaller resolution but last night my buddy and I recieved the same picture at the same time from someone and his was at a much higher resolution. He was using the stock SMS program and I was using Handcent. I uninstalled Handcent and had the person resend the picture so I would get it via the stock program and the picture came at a higher resolution, but not as great as the other persons. I was using my T-Mobile HTC One and he was using a Verizon HTC One X.
I was thinking it was maybe a T-Mobile thing limiting the MMS size, but today I sent a picture to both my wife and myself to compare. Hers is the Nexus 4 and I have the HTC One.
The original size of the picture being sent (after being compressed by the texting app is 235KB and 1909x1080.
My wife received that picture at 235KB @ 1909x1080 and I received the picture at 405KB 1023x579.
Does anyone have an explanation for why it's coming in like that and a fix for it? This was on the stock texting program on the phones.
Also FWIW, when Handcent is installed and I send from the stock app to myself and Handcent recieves the picture, it comes in at 188KB @ 639x362. I'm no longer a Handcent user. None of the other SMS apps did this.

I can only think of it being a setting that is limiting the size of the file. Maybe try another SMS app and see if you can change the size of the file you get. Most of the time there is settings that let you limit sizes for data reasons.

I am waiting for HTC to ship me my phone. I did a trade in program with T-Mo as a Rep i was able to trade in my N4 for a full repalcement with a HTC One should be here later this week. If you are unlocked and have a custom recovery maybe try a nanodroid and install a different rom and see how that is. You can always go back with the backup. I don't really use MMS.

Oh okay, nice! I haven't rooted yet so I'm still on the stock rom. Wonder what the deal is
HTC is letting current t-mo RSA's as well as sprint, and at&t to trade in there high end phone for free HTC one. It is only for RSA's.

Maybe this. Happened to me on my One X when getting pics from an iPhone 4.

I called HTC yesterday about it. The guy was able to duplicate and said he play with it and see what he came up w/ and should call me back today. There's no reason that this phone should be getting a picture at 435x767 resolution when other phones are getting it at 1088x1920. That's unacceptable.

Hey I'm trying to install the apk and it asks if I would like to replace the system app, I say okay and hit install, then it says app not installed, an existing package by the same name with a conflicting signature is already installed.
So then with a file manager with root access, i tried copy and pasting the MMS.apk into the system/app folder and it will not paste. Any advice?

Stock /system is not r/w you need to flash a kernel that allows r/w to system. I wouldn't recommend trying to replace the stock messaging app with MMS.apk, might cause undesired results.
Possible to extract default.xml from SYSTEM/CUSTOMIZE/MNS and upload so I can take a look at it?
HTC One
PM'd it to you.
So it seems on a vertical picture, the One will receive is 434x767 resolution and on a horizontal picture it's 1023x579. Keep in mind the compressed picture that the messaging app sent out was 1520x2688 and 2688x1520 respectably. I've seen these numbers multiple times.
It boggles my mind how this is their high end phone and other phones are able to recieve the high resolution pictures via text and this one can not and HTC's answer to me was "basically going to have to deal with it or get another phone". That was an unacceptable answer for me.
My 2688x1520 gets recieved at 1909x1080 and I received a verticle one at it's original size. Only thing I noticed was that the verticle image size was under 1mb originally, therefor requiring no compression. T-mobile sets it's mms limit a 1000k so Im assuming size recieved depends on amount of compression required.

I'm glad to hear that, at least it shows it's possible. I can't get anywhere close to that obviously. All the pictures are under 1000k, I'm not sure what the problem is. Was this with the stock messaging app or a different one?

Stock, by the way I'm running the ARHD 7.1 ROM using a default.XML file inside SYSTEM\CUSTOMIZE\MNS from Energy's T-Mobile One S ROM.

I've had the same problem day one with this phone. I don't get it. Pictures come in way smaller than they should it's so annoying. This is is especially true when receiving screenshots. I'll attach some examples.

I would like to know how to send a full sized MMS on sprint's network. Even if I install a rom that can send up to 5M, I notice the receiver always gets something along the lines of 200kb. I have tried both GoSMS and Handcent to send pictures, and neither work even when put at full size in options. So far the only way I've acheived this is to use Handcent's personal network, upload the picture there, then send someone the link to which they download from. Now this is rather inconvenient, as some of my friends don't have smartphones yet, so it's hard for them to view the file. I''d also prefer to not email pictures, as it's just very slow and difficult. Can anyone explain how to fix this? Thank you
I guess nobody knows...
Try this work around I posted elsewhere and it's helped a few people......
Add a random pic to the message (it will probably be a small file like you say), then add the picture you actually want to send (should be way bigger according to message size number, ie: goes from 200kb to 1375kb etc). Now long press on the first pic and remove it.....you SHOULD be left with the second pic and the size should be the original size of the pic 1375-200=1175kb.
Let me know if that works.

Hmm it didn't work... Also, cm10.1 doesnt allow me to attatch more than one picture for some reason. I can either send, remove, or replace
Ooooh, yea cm10 I'm not familiar with. I'm sorry, I'm on sense 5 atm...that workaround works for sense 4+.....in sense 5 the pics send full size off the bat with no issues...

All the AOSP roms seem to play funny with mms. I couldn't find a solution and tried quite a few things. Sense Rom was my solution.
I'd like to know if anyone else gets a text about the receiver having a size limit and your mms not going through?

Is that what it is? I guess that makes sense. Most people I know are on Verizon.
