Hi
I have a problem that i can't find any existing threads on.
I just received my SGS2 and noticed right away when i turned it on that it had very poor viewing angles regarding color accuracy.
If i tilt it just a little back/forward or right/left, it shows a strong green/blue-ish tint on the screen.
My girlfriend also bought a SGS2 a week ago and her phone does not do this when i tilt it.
Is this normal behavior the first few days or is my screen broken?
I will make a video tonight that shows the problem.

Neither can i on my girlfriends SGS2. I will test this on my friends phone when i get home and if his phone is ok, then i'll return mine and buy a new one.
I've had 3 now and it is definitely present on all three. It's just the way the glass is as far as I can tell.

It is NOT normal! I have tested mine against two other SGS2 now, both are less that 4 weeks old and none of them has this problem.
I think what you other guys are referring to is the blueish white that all the screens have. This is not what i'm talking about. My phone shows a really strong blue tint when you tilt it just a little in any direction. It is so strong that it is even clearly visible and disturbing in photos shown on the screen, making it impossible to sit several people and watch photos on the phone.
I cannot show any video or images of this problem as i have already sent it back.

I only see the blue tint when the phone is tilted. It can be quite strong, but as I said in my last comment, I've seen this in all models I have tested so far.
Would like to see one that hasn't got this.

Don't know what you lot are on about, but when I tilt my screen, even to an insane angle and view it almost till I am looking at the side of the phone, the colour is the same as when i'm looking at it dead on.
I think the viewing angle is amazing, and the colours and brightness are just as good viewed at an angle as straight on.. so I'm confused.
You guys must be proper straining to find things wrong with this phone.

Yes there is.. My girlfriends and my friends phone does not do this. I will take som photos to document this.
I have a feeling the problem lies with the glass screen or the coating.
I switch the screen off and tilt it, I get a bright daylight reflection on the screen, but I look at the glass and not the reflection. I then notice that the glass has got a blue hue to it.
Actually if I tilt it in other directions I can see pink colouration too lol.
Have others noticed this?
I better stop obsessing now or it will start to annoy me

I haven't tested this with the phone off. But i do know that the problem i describe has nothing to do with being obsessive. The first thing both my girlfriend and friend noticed was the strong blue tint which is completely non-existent on their devices.
I aswell notice the blue tinting when i tilt it abit, its easily noticable, but its nothing terrible, its just there.
would be interested in more parties opinions, seems as though only a select few so far dont have it, or cant notice it for some reason =)
I have used two SGS2's from the first batch and one from the second batch. They all have the blue tint when tilted.

Yes we need more data.
Maybe we should also define how much tilt we're talking about.
On my device only a few degrees, less than 7 degrees produced a strong blue-ish tint wich was easily observable and annoying to the point that you couldn't really sit several people beside each other and watch photos on it. My old SGS1 did not have this problem either at all.
Here's some vids of SGS2 devices which do NOT have this issue as reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK7M_RNQM7k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOxAh4I2jrk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvr_P0euqWc
The last video link is really good. It shows the screen from a lot of angles where none of them produces any blue tint. Look at 6:35 where he titlts it upwards and down again on the table. No tint. If i laid my phone on the table and filmed if from the same angle as he did, my screen would show a strong blue tint.

I'm not seeing it on my SGSII or my Captivate. I just checked again to be sure.
i have blue tint. You can see really well if you are viewing a white web page and move the phone slightly.

Slight blue tint is not a bad thing. Blue pixels dim down faster than red and green. Over time, you will get it balanced.
AMOLED is not known for color accuracy. Don't be too picky
This is perfectly normal for the display type. http://www.smartmobix.com/Super_Amoled_vs_Super_LCD
I see the blue if you hold the phone about 45 degrees tilted from straight on. Pretty much any direction if you aren't straight on you see the weird tint.
Mine has a severe blue tint with only about a 10 degree rotate on any axis. I never imagined that a phone could have such a poor viewing angle. My Captivate's screen was leagues better.
What am I doing wrong, I cannot reproduce this blue tint.
At about 45 degrees I see a slight change, but it looks more yellow than blue. Its barely noticeable, and only at >45 degrees, hardly an issue.
I never use screen protectors because of past experience with them making the screen foggy when viewed at an angle. Could the screen protector be causing the issue for others? Or, at least amplifying the issue?
Sent from my SGS II
Well, mine must be defective.
You know those holographic comic book covers and how you see a shimmer with the slightest angle change? It's like that. The slightest shift brings on the blue.
I don't think I'm incredibly picky either. My Captivate and Tilt 2 before it were dynamite by comparison.
My Thrill did that, when I 3D mode, the viewing angle was minuscule in that phone.
I am nothing but amazed with the screen on the SGS II. You should definately swap for a new one.
Sent from my SGS II
Normal experiences for an amoled screen. its like when you see a plasma that's off and its greenish, it just has to do with the panel I assume.
Here is a video of what I see. I actually start to see it sooner than the camera does though. But you can still easily see how it changes to blue.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y5p0KZoLMM
Thanks for posting that video. I've been noticing this problem too. I would say anyone that says it goes away has just gotten used to it. I don't think there is a solution.
It seems that there is a lot of variance between the display quality between different SGS2 units. I myself was perfectly happy with mine until the screen had to be replaced by the Samsung warranty service. The new display wasn't half as bright as the one before and the light sensor coupled with a dim display makes it even worse. I've done some comparison between different units and found that almost all of them had different quality displays - many way too dark.
I made a photo comparison between our own to SGS2s using an original device (bought in early July) as a reference as its display performance is similar to the one I used to have in mine before the replacement.
I would be happy to hear if you have noticed similar differences with you own or your friends units just to get sense of how common the issue is.
The full story below!
*********SNIP**************
I’ve been a pretty happy owner of a Samsung Galaxy SII since April. I’ve especially been pleased with the excellent display that is able to deliver true blacks while being one of the brightest screens out there.
Imagine my horror then when the display broke. It looked like something was leaking inside it. It started as a minor pink hue in the edge of the screen and in a couple days had turned into a bruise covering one fourth of the screen. All the pixels seemed to work but there was a shadow with distinct edges clouding the picture.
The issue
Luckily the warranty covered this and the service point returned my phone with a note: “Display module replaced“. Little did I know that not all Super Amoled+ screens are created equal. After a minute of using the serviced device I noticed that the screen was somehow dark – noticeably darker than before. I checked all the settings – everything was set up the way it had been before with the auto-brightness set on. It just wasn’t the screen I had come to know. We have two units of the SGS2 at home and so I compared the serviced one with the other original unit. The display in the original (reference) unit was noticeably brighter than mine. The difference was even more apparent in the dark shades – where the reference display separated several different shades of dark grays mine only displayed black. The original screen on the reference device delivered the same quality as my ‘pre-serviced’ unit. Then I turned off the auto-brightness on both devices and cranked up the brightness to the max. Again the serviced unit was visibly dim compared to the reference unit. Even the color space between the devices are different – the original quite natural and a tad warm and the serviced one distinctly cool with whites tilted towards blue.
Next I borrowed a couple of other S2′s from colleagues at the office and it turned out their devices were just as dim as my serviced one – one even dimmer! I guess this explains why some reviewers and users have judged the display on the SGS2 to be too dark – something that I always thought to be a silly complaint. It seems that the display quality between devices varies greatly. I’m currently expecting a reply from my service point as to what I should do with my ‘faulty’ screen – I’ll let you know how this pans out.
I tried taking photos with the reference unit and the serviced unit side-by-side. If you think the differences are small and to complain is silly you should know that the real life effect is that taking photos and watching videos is now a pain because every shadow is just a solid black area and when you go into a dark room the auto-brightness drops the brightness way too low. So if you own a Samsung Galaxy s2 with a dark screen – you are one of the unlucky ones.
Below are the comparison shots. If you suspect you have one of the dark screens feel free to leave a comment below.

Happy now? Any comments on the real topic of this thread?
no not really
Yeah i'm also one of the unlucky ones with the dark screen. What makes it worse is the blue tinge when you tilt the screen slightly. Another problem, my screen keeps going bright for about 3 to 4 secs about every 45 seconds and then goes dull again. Nothing to do with auto brightness by the way because i turned it off.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yeah I've noticed the hue shift when tilting the display as well. Also on gray and white surfaces when the screen dims the color is not smooth but looks rather like there is some dirt under the glass. Like it's a whole different type of display than the one in our other SGS2.
I experienced the same situation. I had to replace the screen on the S2 bought back in may due to nasty scratches. The screen was otherwise really top notch with no visible defects.
The one they replaced with is much dimmer and actually has a higher contrast which leads to some color burn. There are also stripes from top to bottom when I pull down the top bar. And as if that was not enough, the picture is grainy. As you pointed out it feels as a totally different display.
I am not going to swap it since I managed to lower the contrast to an acceptable level but it's quite disappointing regardless.
This could be samsungs way of trying to slow down the screen burning?

If you come from HTC to Samsung, you're certainly going to notice the difference. At least in my case, the HTC had better whites on screen and no blue tinge when tilting screen.

I frequently flash between the XW and XX series of ROMs and notice that on some roms, the screen is darker and on others it is brighter. This is when it is being tested at 100% brightness and display setting set to normal.
If i knew for sure that flashing my phone with the correct ROM would make my screen brighter, i would do it in a flash.

I would still recommend the phone, but you will have to use manual brightness instead.

For those with the dim screen, if you are adventurous enough, you can follow the instructions here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235212&highlight=brightness to crank up the brightness of your phone so that you can use the auto brightness.
I have a new white sgs2 and this is the first Android phone I have had where the auto brightness on all roms Samsung or cm7 is totally useless. I use manual now and it looks good at around 1 3rd brightness so heavens knows how low the auto brightness is setting it!

I have talked about this several times and even sent private messages to developers but all ignored it.
Anyway, try flashing the official kernal of KE2 and you will see the difference.
The collors and screen brightness will change without any effect what so ever to the device performance.
Screen Adjuster is another way to correct this, it is a free program in the market which will do the job for you .

And a yellowspot in the rightbottom corner, but that'll fade over time. (i hope)
I'm glad that the screen has a very high resolution, it's really hard to even notice the dead pixel.
I have noticed a yellowish tinge at the bottom of the display. Only really notice it when there is a white background. Is it likely that the display is somehow faulty??

I have the exact same, a yellowish spot in the bottom right corner.
I hoped it was the same problem as the iphone or SGS2.
They say the yellowspot is from the glue that they use to stick the screenlayers together, but it needs time to vaporise and should go away over time.
But I have my phone now almost a week and i still get the spot back now and then.

Hi guys just wanna update you regarding screen issues.
I've spoken with people on the forum of my country, other 2 guys with Xperia S and both of them got that really barely visible yellow tint on the bottom part of the screen (also, one of these guys has 2 Xperia S -him and his brother- and both of them have that tint).
Really difficult to explain it on forums (nothing compared to the GS2 yellow tint) because it's really hard to see and only visible on white/clear colors uniform backgrounds, but according to what I'm seeing it's a common issue, not a problem of a single faulty unit.
Got a blue/whiteisch pixel to the top right of my screen
They said i need to have more then 3 to get a new phone :/`
Can i fix this ?

I have the problem too. I called technical team dept from where i bought the phone, and they asked me to do a screen test over the phone. I tap the screen it shows all white, tap again red, green etc etc. He asked me if i could see a yellowish tinge running across the bottom of the display when these colours appeared on the display which i couldn't to be honest. I took it back to the shop, and i dont know if it has to do with the bright lighting within the store, but it didn't show up hardly at all, barely noticeable. It seems less noticeable in a well lit environment, or outside as opposed to when i am at home where it i notice it more. It is midly annoying, but this shouldn't be the case.
Can anyone throw any light as to what this could be??
Thanks

I believe that yellowish tint has something to do with warmth from the screen or the battery or the screen staying on for a longer time or something or something.
because when I'm using it alot, playing games, browsing, whatsapp etc etc. for like an hour. It gets more visible.
And then it's from "barely noticeable" to "hard to miss"
I can clearly see it on Grey (notification slide down) or Blue (startscreen DrawSomething) or White.

Same here. Interesting what you say. I would still like to know where the consumer stands on this issue, and if Sony themselves would recogonise if this is a somehow a fault with the display. My Arc had no such problems.
Hi guys,
I'm new here, but I was reading the threads on the S from the start.
Reading through the screen problems I was thinking about the following:
The Xperia S's screen is glued- as I know -, like for example the iPhone4/4s'. Some i4 users noticed this yellowish tint as well, and they've came to a conclusion it was because of the glue what was used to put the screens together and it disappeared after about 1,5-2 weeks.
This could explain the reaction to temperature differences too.
I just recently bought a refurb S2 from ATT as an upgrade. I also just read up on how these screens quickly burn out and leave imprints from static images. So for you guys that have had this phone since launch, how bad is it? Is it even noticeable?
I saw this video and it looks pretty terrible : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdbTuMamqSA
Wow that's bad! Best way to protect yourself is to get a screenprotector...
Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Burn in is about the same on most display panels. You would have to leave you screen on permanently for extended periods of time to experience anything like what the host of that video is talking about. This is the first I've even heard of it and I've had the same gs2 since launch.

Mine has some slight burn in in the status bar, nothing really major but it's noticeable on all blue or light gray backgrounds and low brightness.

i got my refurb from AT&T a little over a week and a half ago and my screen is pretty bad in low light conditions. i dunno if its screen burn in but there are noticeable blotches on the screen when dark images are shown. luckily you cant really see it during normal conditions.
The only devices I've ever seen with burn-in are store display units - which are kept with the screen on nearly all the time displaying the same damn thing.

The SG2 is especially bad about this since they usually don't play any "demo" on that model in the stores, the phone is kept on the home screen all hours of the day and night, or at least that's what the AT&T reps told me

Same here, got it release day and have had no problems. I usually keep auto brightness on but towards the dim side. Screen is plenty bright anyways.
I can vouch for amoled screens getting some burn in if you're not careful. My nexus one has a permanent mail box burned in from a text message reminder app that I used to use that would keep the screen awake with that static image. I'm sure all screens will do this though and I'm just more careful with this phone

The ICS launchers have caused burn in on my screen because of the app drawer launcher. You don't notice it unless you are on low light levels with a grey image though.
So here is my dilemma and I need some community input or advice. I have a GN2 titanium. I bought it at my employer Bestbuy. Thing is, there is a strange looking line that resembles a tear under the screen that is slightly curved and is about 3/4" long, maybe a tad more. You can ONLY SEE it when the brightness is turned ALL THE WAY DOWN and you are on a screen that is dark. Now if you go into the light with the darkness down all the way it goes away. Full brightness it cannot be seen. Not even at half brightness or 1/4 brightness can it be seen. Thing is I could easily return it BUT bestbuy stopped carrying the titanium on verizon the day they got it! Crazy right , in other words we are sold out of titanium and are not getting more in. I could always get a white one but I don't think I want a white one. Truth be told I think it's just bugging me and need to tell someone lol. If it was your GN2 would you for one even notice it,and if so would you just roll with it? I have to do all the steps above just to see it. I noticed it when watching on mx player in bed at night on low brightness. The touch screen works fine in that area and everything. I wish I could take a picture but I cant seem to get it to show up in a picture.
tl;dr ?
-Strange tear under glass
-causes no touchscreen/pen issues
-only viewable at 0 brightness , in the dark , on a dark image
-exchange for a white GN2
-live with it

thank god im not bat sh!t crazy and someone else has seen this, its strange eh? i think ill sit on it as well
Hmm you sure this isn't just the blotches that show up on amoled screens when it goes dark. If you shut the phone all the way off does the line go away. From what it sounds like without actually seeing the phone it sounds like what I described above. If it is. All the super amoled screens tend to do that

You bought it at Bestbuy. You guys have a really good return policy. Why not swap it out?

sounds pretty typical of an amoled screen they all suffer from it under very low brightness, I haven't noticed on mine may be because I stopped paying attention for it a long long time ago lol, after having a few phones with amoled screens.
I have the same issue. Even started a thread about it in the Q&A section. Glad I'm not the only one to have it lol

Yep both my Note 2's have the same problem, both are Titanium Gray. My brother got a launch day Marble White from the Verizon store and his screen is immaculate. Not a single black spot or line on his screen. We flipped the lights and tested them using the same app. Once our eyes adjusted, which didn't take more than 10 seconds, it was immediately clear the difference between my phone and his. His screen not only had a deeper black than mine, but it was free of any markings while mine looked brighter and had noticeable splotches all over.
Niiiiiiice.

I don't think the color of the devices have anything to do with it. But all amoled screens are different. I guess I since of the lucky ones mine performs great but had only one little dark spot right under the Samsung logo.
