Bump for a new question
It is for 1.1.
It is 1.1 but there is a 1.2 version out now. You can find it on slatedroid in the 1.2 section of the site.
It doesnt really mater what bootloader it was made for, i flashed vegan 5.1.1 beta while having the 1.2 bootloader as long as you flash the appropriate kernel after you flash the rom you will be fine

I've been playing around a lot with the gtablet today. It came with the stock firmware and then I updated it to 3588 OTA. Afterwards I tried several roms, and ended up with a brick (magic value mismatch error), and used NVFlash to go back to stock rom.
Once I had the stock rom on I wasn't able to upgrade to 3588 OTA because I kept getting an error once it would try installing it. I tried to manually put 3588 on, and it partially worked, but I got some sort of error about installing the bootloader, but 3588 still loaded up and worked fine. So then I went ahead and installed one of the custom roms.
So my question is... how do I find out what bootloader version I have installed right now? I played around quite a bit with trying lots of stuff out, so I want to make sure I have the most recent version running.
Thanks!
finally found it
From roebeet on another forum
to check which branch you are on: Go to Settings -- About Tablet -- Tapu UI Version. If your firmware starts with "1.1", then you are on the 1.1 (old) branch. If your firmware starts with "1.2", then you are on the 1.2 (new) branch. Also an obvious difference between the two is that the 1.2 branch adds a lockscreen to the tablet.
the only way to be on 1.2 is to flash to it intentionally. 4349 was an OTA that did it automatically, but that update has been pulled. So, unless you've flashed to 4349 stock, you are on 1.1.
Newbe - want to try different Roms

I'm a very new user to GTab and android, I've been learning so I'm sorry if my question(s) have been answer elsewhere.
1. Thanks for the info on where to find out which bootloader. This really help, I had the same question as I'm trying to try other custom ROMS.
2. When I first got my GTab (by the way, I love it) I try to install TnT Lite 4.2.4 with no luck, so I install Vegan Tab Gingerbread edition and I had to reflash while trying to install TnT Lite again and got the Harmony edition of Gingerbread (not even sure if it is the same one, Newbe for you ). Now I have lock screen on it. According to your post that should be 1.2. bootloader. So, installing Vegan Tab 7 Harmony updated my bootloader I guess.. is that true??
3. Now I want to try CM7 with overclock Kernel, can someone give some feedback?? or should I just want for Beta of Honeycomb "Bottle of Smoke"??
Thanks all

I believe there is a lock screen on most ROMs whether they're 1.1 or 1.2. The obvious way to determine which version of *stock* you're on is whether or not it has a lock screen. 1.1 doesn't but 1.2 does.
The only 1.2 ROMs I'm aware of are:
Stock 4349
Brilliant Corners (what I use)
Century Eyes
Mountain Laurel
Beasty
Honeycomb (alpha build)
Thanks
Thanks for the information. I will check my G Tab when I get home tonight and look for it in the "About Tablet" in Setting..
Maybe I just can't find it , but does anybody know where to find good instructions on how to get boot loader 1.2 on the gtablet. I would like to try some of these new honeycomb roms. Also instructions on how to go back just in case . Thanks

Hey thanks I was looking for a step by step install guide. I wonder if there is another for the reverse going from 1.2 to 1.2 boot loader.

Not sure which you are looking to switch to since you sais 1.2 to 1.2, BUT, to switch from branch to branch you do code yellow here:
http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/
Just pick the NVFlash version for the branch you want to switch to. It's that simple.
Al
Thanks I meant to say boot loader 1.2 back to 1.1 boot loader. Just in case the 1.2 roms do not work as well. Thanks

I'd have to peruse the Dummies site to see if there's instructions, but my from my own experience, the SAFEST way is to go to a 1.2 stock ROM first (like 1.2-4349), and then from there downlevel to 1.1-3588 stock, using standard recovery (no cwm!). It's a few steps, but it's the lowest risk of soft-brickage, imo.
gojimi also has instructions on down-leveling, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036956

The Dummies site does not have you go back to your current stock rom then down/up level (depending if you are going up/down). BUT, better safe than sorry. Thanks.
I am still fuzzy on which bootloader I currently have. I have read all the bootloader posts and all of them say:
2 Branches of Development
There are currently 2 branches of development. Everything provided on this website are divided into either 1.1 or 1.2. Please use the correct version for your branch of development. If you are on stock and do not know which branch you are on, do the following to check.
Turn on your gtab.
Go into menu.
Go into Settings.
Go into About Tablet.
Go into Tap UI Version.
Firmware starts with 1.1 = you're on 1.1 branch. Firmware starts with 1.2 = you're on 1.2 branch.
But I upgraded my GTab almost a year ago to TNT Lite 4.4 and can not remember. When I go to the settings and about, I see this:
Model number GTablet-TnT-Lite
Android version 2.2
Tap UI version TNT Lite v4.4.0
Kernel version 2.6.32.9-00001-g6e47897-dirty
[email protected] #221
Build number FRF91
Is there another way to determine my bootloader? TIA
TNT Lite 4.4 is a bootloader 1.1 rom

TNT Lite 4.4 is a retired 1.1 b/l rom...see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004.
The instructions for finding the b/l version only apply when you are on the stock rom.

Okay I just bought a Viewsonic G tablet and I would like to root it. So can someone just post a forum that would be best for rooting a brand new G Tablet. Also, I've been hearing a lot about rom 1.0 or rom 1.1 or rom 1.2, which rom should i get. Thank You
Your GTab will have the 1.1 branch or 1.2 (likely 1.2 if you recently bought it new). There are a bunch of ROMs you can install, I like the Honeycomb Flashback (still in an alpha state but working well).
You may start here

Verify this. I got mine 3 days ago and have 1.1 on it

I would suggest that you flash to BL 1.2 stock and then re-flash to any of the 1.2 ROMs.
I have Old vegan 5.1 on my tablet and haven't got around to updating it to another rom is there a current rom that would be easiest to update to and how would I do so?
If you are running the boot loader 1.1 version of VegabTAB 5.1 then you might have to upgrade to the new boot loader 1.2 first (back to TNT stock ROM). Then you can upgrade to the latest VeganTAB 7.1

I am not sure what loader I am on currently. um does this help?
kernel version
2.6.32.9-dirty [email protected] #6?...and obviously Vegan-tab-v1.0.0B5.1
Also how is the newest vegan tab is it alright does it run pretty smooth?
"Some of the most stable ROMs are based on the 1.1 bootloader. The one I want to install is VEGAN Tab 5.1. Which is based on 1.1. Also to use ClockWorkMod you will need to downgrade to a 1.1 bootloader."
http://theundergrowth.com/cdumpmag/?p=1280
So you are using the 1.1 boot loader, should upgrade to 1.2 since all the newer ROMs are 1.2 based and the new kernel for ICS is probably 1.2 based.
Good luck.

yes I am using boot loader 1.1, Vegan Tab 5.1, There is that newer version out, version 7.1 and I have been told that it is pretty stable other then the fact that there are some known issues with HD video. There is another mod out there called FrankienTab and that is also a good reliable ROM. FrankienTab is pretty much a continuing of the Vegan ROM.
And I know about CWM because I had to use it to get Vegan 5.1 on my tablet but thanks.
Hello everyone, My friend recently gave me his G Tablet to "update" it. I've read most of the guides and have a good idea on what needs to be done. I am currently on stock rom 1.1. I was just wondering before i backup my rom with NVFlash and install CWM, do i need to Root my device first ? I went through that gtablet for dummies site and it does not mention anything about rooting the tablet. I intend to install vegan tab 7.1.0. Does the rom come pre-rooted or will i need root the device first before running nvflash and installing cwm ?
Also im looking for a stable rom. Is vegan-tab stable enough or should i be looking at another rom? remember i am on bootloader 1.1
No need to root before installing a new Rom. The new rom will give you root access. Vegan seems to be a favorite for stability. Not sure if the most recent update has a version for the 1.1 bootloader though. This site will walk you through everything you need to know http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/

The boot loader issue had been debated at some length in the past.
Some dev (roebeet) pushed for development into 1.2 - some stayed with 1.1
Either way, there are some roms for both.
You should learn NV flash and try out a few and see what works for you.
HC flashback 10.3 is slick and nice.
Beasty/clem ultimate is very fast and stable.
On a side note, ICS is in development pending kernel work. It will be on a 1.2 BL base...fwiw
