Is there a fix for blurry facebook contact pictures? Whenever I get a call, the photo that shows looks like it was enlarged from a tiny thumbnail.

I think that's a limitation of the size of the pic the facebook app uses to sync. One sure fire workaround is to have facebook for htc sync do the picture syncing. It uses a higher quality picture. I have also heard, but have not confirmed and kind of doubt, that if you do the initial sync over wifi it will use higher quality pictures.

Use the Facebook for HTC account instead of the general Facebook app from the market. If you go to Settings --> Accounts & Sync, you can "Add account" and choose Facebook for HTC from that and go into it and check "Sync contacts". If you do it this way over the general facebook app, your pics for the calls should be a higher resolution....it won't be flawless, but better than what you have now. Make sure you uncheck the "Facebook" account so that it doesn't sync. Leave "Facebook for HTC Sense" set to sync.

Using facebook for sense definitely helped. Thanks for the tip.

Wouldn't it also be dependent on the original image quality of the user's upload to begin with. If it is low quality and facebook then uploads a lower quality photo during the syncing process wouldn't it cause more viewing problems?

i don't think so....even if it is low quality to begin with, the quality needed to show up relatively clear as small as it does on our phones would still be less than that, IMO.

X10 2.1 the contact photo is very blur when call out or call in.
X10 1.6 it 's no problem about contact photo ,it's very clear.
Has one any inquired with SE to see if there is a certain resolution the pictures need to be? or even dimensions might make a difference.

This problem is caused when the contact pictures are synced with gmail. They upload in low quality. So when you download them they are going to be low quality

I have the same problem like ppp1974. It's very annoying, but I don't find any solution yet. Shame on SE

Sorry I'm new here, lurking for UK 2.1 update news, so haven't seen it myself, but... I believe the pixellated contact photos is an android enforced 96 x 96 pixel limitation. Certainly when syncing with google contacts, there are hoardes of people saying the limit should be lifted or a push from phone to google account, rather than google able to push the 96 pixel limitted one. Several threads / requests on google code website. It is dissapointing if SE have changed this, as indicated by posters here, it seems to work well on 1.6...

contact photos work well on X10 1.6
Anyone solve this?
It seems that 2.1 is trying to stretch the contact pictures from the native resolution (from the contact list) which is making them blurry.
if so then sux, anyone tried sync them with timescape and then use facebook sync??
dunno it that can help us
Problem solved..
I found that when joining contacts from phone with facebook contacts it makes a blurry photo.
BUT when joining contacts with facebook I had two choices:
- 1.st was Contacts name, facebook icon and my email address.
- 2.nd was Contacts name, facebook icon and just Facebook or Timescape.
The second option makes crisp contact photos.
It works for me. If anything unclear send me a PM.
(edit):
If you go to edit your contact and you see already two facebook accounts in there (one with email address and one just with Timescape under it) then just touch photo under Timescape facebook section and select Set as contact picture.
If you get the fullscreen caller id app and assign pictures from there it fixes it in the phonebook as well. Also i read that this is a general android issue and not only x10.

Bitte this is only a solution if you habe a facebook account.
Same here. Only the default pic from Timescape/default contact app works well, everything else is blurry in call screen (I am not using FB).
EDIT: It is a generally issue because Google only uses pics in I think 96x96. The solutions from other devices is to make another contact with the same name as you already have, but make it as a contact only in your phone (not google contact). After that when you edit this "double" contact, you can assign photo to the contact in the phone and after that phone uses this foto, not that one on the google. The problem is that this solution doenst work on X10 (at leasts not on mine), it makes pics look better, but still it is blurry.
EDIT2: Just for testing purposes, make whole new contact on the phone, assign any photo you want (I have tried photos from 4mpix camera as well as from 12mpix camera - doesnt matter) and still when in call in/out screen, its blurry and here I think the problem is on the X10 part.
it is not genral problem from google it's from se stupidity they were working in 1.6 and i have htc hero with 2.1 and every thing is ok so se should repair this huge mistake with some fix
This method is little strange, but it's working..
Install from market - "Full Screen Caller ID" app, then open and assign any new photos to contacts. Then you must uninstall Caller ID, and that's all.
I think that this application overrides default pics 96x96...

Picture contact is poor and blurry?

I have update my X10 to 2.1 and here are the things I don't like:
- Picture contact is poor and blurry when receiving and making calls even if you used high res pictures.
Is there a fx for this.
No actually cant be fixed but thats a Google Issue other Handsets have this too on Eclair and Froyo.
When saving contacts, save them to the phone and not Google. Of course this would mean no backup of contacts but its definitely a temporary fix for your problem.

I use SyncMyPix to replace the blurry contact pictures with HQ pics.
They also work on the call screen, no blur for me after all
The app syncs with facebook too each time you run it and it recognizes contacts pretty well - without renaming them, like the damn social phonebook does partially . If it links contacts incorrectly, you can easily unlink them and do it manually.
just download it for free in the market!
oh, almost forgot, you have to enable "maximum quality" in settings, otherwise you'll still have blurry pix.
What the he'll does this have to do with development???

I found the Problem skip the Crop and it works and looks good. The cropping is the Problem.
if i edit each contact`s picture, is there any app to backup those images? not all of my contacts are on facebook, so syncmypix wouldn`t do much for me, at least.

[Q] Contact Images blurry?

I've tried everything from unlinking people and forcing my TB to use a high resolution picture, but it still get's knocked down, I am running Viruses ROM, and whenever a contact without a picture calls, the image looks perfect. Is there anyway I can force my phone to use a decent image?
Use the fb for HTC Sense photo as the primary pic. Not fb for Android. It will give you better pics. Dunno why.
Sent from my ThunderBAMF using the XDA app.
The phone will sync your high res image with Google Contacts, which downgrades it to low resolution, which gets synced back. That's why the image eventually looks terrible after a bit of syncing. DSB stated pretty much the only way I know of to get a higher resolution contact image, short of an app. I just personally hate using Facebook for contact pictures as people tend to use everything except for a picture of themselves.

How do i do that? Sorry....noobness.
Try to open Friendstream and it will ask you to login to a social networking account, put in your Facebook information. Fair warning, you will have Facebook integrated into a lot more of the phone than you currently do.
you could also try the app syncmypix, not sure if it will fix it though.

Low quality Facebook Contact photos

So I have my contacts synced with Facebook, which is really handy, but the problem is the photos are pixelated, low quality junk. I can't believe this is still a problem with Sense phones.
Does anyone know a fix or non-intrusive work around for this? Why does Sense pull low quality photos from Facebook?

Would also love a solution to this.
I have HaxSync but it still appeared to pull low quality photos.
Could it be related to the stock prices? I hear that's low quality as well.

its never been a problem with sense phones, maybe with this one that uses a different facebook to pull info down.
I use an app called facebook sync. It slows you to choose the quality of the profile pictures

That's not true. I know I experienced it with my Evo early on and a google search will show others with the same problem on a multitude of HTC phones...there are threads all over XDA that go back years with this problem with a few workarounds.
One that used to work was uninstalling Facebook, syncing with "Facebook for HTC Sense" and then reinstalling Facebook. The only problem is Facebook for HTC Sense is no longer an option under Accounts and Sync.
I've uninstalled Facebook (as much as it will let me) and removed the syncing and then tried multiple different syncing programs and they all show pixelated, grainy photos.
It's really annoying.
Thumbnails look great. Everything else looks like trash. In fact, even when using a high-res photo I have saved on my phone in a gallery for a contact the full size photo on the contacts page looks pixelated, albeit less so than the Facebook synced ones.
I think what it's doing is grabbing the small profile picture that shows up on the main timeline page and blowing it up instead of grabbing the actual uploaded profile picture and downsizing it.
Bump for any more ideas.
Tried Friendcaster and it too pulled low quality photos even with the high quality box checked.
I can't be the only one having this issue, can I?
This is a highly annoying problem that has not been fixed since Sense was available for my Windows Mobile phone.
Anyways, here's what I have discovered about this phone.
I disabled the default facebook sync by HTC since the pictures are horrid.
I then installed haxsync, but here's where it gets really strange.
When you go to your contact list, the thumbnails are great!
Now click on the thumbnail itself. The popup has a good quality photo.
Now click on the Name of your contact to pull up full details. The photo is now the garbage. You can go to edit and change the photo to haxsync and then both are good quality. This then goes away the next time haxsync syncs your contact list.

Did this and manually selected the haxsync photos. They are a lot better, but nowhere near the quality I think they should be. They still look like low res photos that are being blown up instead of photos that are being downconverted.
i just dont understand why there is a discrepancy between the popup when clicking the thumnail vs the pic in the full contact details.
New info?
Photo Unlocker, which requires root, is not helping me much here.
Any new development on this topic?
HaxSync works perfectly for me.. Try forcing it to redownload the pictures.
Mine all look fine.

I used to think I had the same problem...but it turns out that I just have low-resolution friends. :cyclops:
I think that maybe the problem is in the phone app grabbing the wrong version of the contact pic, and not anything to do with the facebook app. But I'm just thinking out loud and have no proof.
I was curious about this also. pics on my OG Evo seemed fine. Maybe I'll try haxsync

[Q] Contacts Low Image Quality

Does anyone else have issues with low image quality when they open a contact's info? I have my contacts synced in google, and the images looked really low quality when I open up the contact. I have synced some contacts with twitter, and the image quality is still poor. I tried searching for this but nothing came up
Haxsync will pull down high quality profile pictures from your contacts Facebook...unfortunately it seems that, unlike the E4GT, you have to go in there and manually set that picture for each contact after syncing.
Sent while hanging with that really hoopy frood Ford Prefect.
Is there a way to get better quality photos not using Facebook synced photos? Even the photos from google (gtalk) are bad quality
I just sync contacts once turn off auto sync than manually added pictures to my contacts. I don't use twitter or Facebook though so don't know if it will work for those apps.

This has been a continued thing with HTC. You'd think they would've fixed it, or allowed you to choose how the picture is displayed.
I've been trying haxsync and it downloads the higher res photos fine, and I can manually set them as the preferred photo for a contact, but after a while it reverts back to the low res version. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hasn't happened to me yet, that I've noticed...but I'll keep an eye out.
It's an ICS thing, the pics are synced with Google and stored there so they downres them. IIRC you can just replace them with higher res images and it should stick.

Actually, it's been happening for much longer. And when you manually set up the picture in your Google contacts list, it still comes out low resolution. You could use a 1080p image, and it will still come out like @$$.
I've got an email into HTC. Maybe they have something to say about it. I'll post what I get back... in 30 days.
Google stores contact pictures in a more compressed, low resolution form. I assume that they do this to keep the necessary storage space down. If they took full quality pictures for everyone and stored all of them, imagine the space that would take. Hopefully there's a better way to do it in the future.

Well, even storing the picture on the phone locally, it still does the same thing. I think it's not just Google. Sense does the same thing.
I have the same issue. On my OG Evo and Evo 3D, I created duplicate contacts with nice high res pics of the people I talk to most and set them to Phone. I then exported the Phone contacts to SD card. Once I linked them to my google contacts the pics would remain in hi-res.
This does not work with the LTEvo. I even went through and manually created new Phone contacts with hi-re pics for several of my contacts, linked them to my Google contacts and they are still blurry.
I may delete my contacts, re-sync with google and start all over and see if that helps. There has to be a better way to do this.
What's the point of a 720P 4.7" display if the contact pics look like crap?
It's a known google problem like a few people have said, not sense. I've used programs like HD contacts or HD contact photos in order to sync and save contact photos. Once you're photo syncs with google, you'll get your low res photos.
