Phone Crash and restart during mkv playback - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My galaxy s2 crashes and reboot when playing .mkv file it plays for a minute then hangs (no response) then reboots. It happened using stock rom and villian rom so it might not be the issue. I suppose since the stock video player doesnt support this format but isnt the s2 capable of doing so?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

The stock SGS2 is capable of playing MKVs. Have you tried a few different MKVs from different sources to see if it may just be something it doesn't like with that particular video you are trying to play?
I haven't had the problem yet on my SGS2 but on my previous phone (Captivate) there were times when a certain MKV I downloaded it did not like and would stop playing. But it was rare
I'd definitely try some other MKV videos just to see if this always happens. An MKV file from somewhere else or totally different (not from the same source as the one that does not play) just to narrow it down. I play MKVs nearly daily during my train commute to work and haven't had any problems on stock player
You can also try Mobo player - its free. Just to see if it happens on that too

Actually i used mobo player and orher player but same issue in pc it plays fine il try differrent file with mkv format il see how that works since i only tried one file so far since it supports mkv it should be the file issue but it works fine in pc thanks ill let u know if it works

Its usually a sign of unplayable format of the file .
MKV is a container with many formats .
jje

Thank you guys, its just as you guys said some formats of mkv doesnt work but others does. Tried another mkv file and it works in the default player unlike the the former mkv where the default player said that the format is not compatible. Just to note the mkv with subtitle crashed but the one without subtitle worked. Not sure if that could be the reason
Btw how to use the thanks meter?

[Q] Watching MKV videos!?

Hey, so whenever I try to watch MKV videos that are 200mb or bigger, my GS2 will play the video for a couple of minutes, but then it freezes and I have to restart the phone. I'm currently using Unnamed ROM, but I've tried using other ROMs and the same thing happens. Can anyone help!? Thanks.
Odd... never had such an issues. also shouldn't this be under the Q & A section?
Are you over clocking/undervolting? This happened to me when I oc/uv a little too much with something that needs more power.

Try using other video players such as mxvideo player or mvideoplayer.
mobo player works good too.
Dice player is the best player I've found that will play .mkv files. I've used Mobo too and Dice plays better IMO. If your OC/UV'ing, like mentioned, that will certainly play a roll. Try all stock voltages and see if you lock up.

I made some files from an MKV BD rip to test out picture quality. I made 2 files each at 1280x720 and 800x480 in both MKV and MP4 containers. I wanted to see if there was any appreciable difference in viewing quality between resolution and see if, as you reported, there were any problem playing MKVs with the stock player. Well, I immediately ran into a problem. When I tried to drag and drop the 2 MKV files over it instantly crashed Windows Explorer. Every time. I tried using Kies, but it converts the files to MP4 when copying to the device. Strangely, it converted them fine and they played fine, as did the others. I don't know why an MKV file would cause Explorer to crash. In watching the files I could not see any noticeable quality difference between the Hi-def 1280 file and the native 800 file that would make it worthwhile to give up the additional storage space needed for the Hi-def file. I'd still like to know why I can't transfer an MKV file to the device, though.

How big is the file? And use the file explorer option in Kies Air. And I like the option of being able to playback 720p files so I don't have to go through the process of re-encoding everything just for my phone.

The files varied in size from 100-200mb. I have yet to try KiesAir, but will do so. The file size difference between a 1280x720 and an 800x480 file is considerable. Enough to make a reconversion worthwhile. I use PavTube Ultimate and there's a preset for Samsung that makes it a practically 1-step process.

Try using MX Video player and change in the settings somewhere to use software decoding instead of hardware accelerated and see if that works.

I've installed mobo player.
i've just put on avatar, transformers 3 and warrior. as i dragged them across the pc started converting them. each of them looked ok in the folder. when i unplugged the phone and tried playing them they were just about 5 minutes long with just a bit of music.
i'm completely stuck and baffled...
just tried again, and again, only 4 minutes 51 secs of video played. i don't understand why. is it because i'm uploading using my pc?
why is the pc trying to convert my file format as i'm trying to transfer it? confused!!!
I play 720p mp4 flawlessly with Mvideoplayer. I wasn't promted to convert my MP4 files when I copied them from my PC to my phone, but it did come up when I did it with some AVI files. I clicked no to conversion and they play fine on my phone.
OK, so i've now tried loading another type of file, avi, to the phone. it was a 6.2GB movie. It didn't load, said it was too big!!! WTF!
this is some FAT32 issue right?
But this still doesn't solve my original problem.
I've loaded many different files, many types, different sizes.... But it seems like all the stock video player (and now MOBO Player) wants to do is play only 4 minutes 51 seconds........
but when you look at the file through astro or the pc, it shows the true length of the file.... thnk i'm missing something here, it may be basic, but please help someone. been at this all day with no luck!!
wmv
anybody knows about a player for wmv files? I tried using the Mx Video Player but it says it doesn't support it.
I don't whether you guys looking for the free or paid apps
but
I personally using rockplayer lite and it does work with almost every thing especially if you use "play with hardware acceleration" then every thinh up to 3.5 gb film is work pefectly
I got also a PowerDVD mobile (violation of the xda ...) hacked one so it work well.
so i cannnot post a apk.
Try diceplayer

I transferred movies onto mine, six files ranging from about 700mb to 1.6gb in avi format and they play without any problems on mobo player,I also have power dvd mobile legit version and that plays them as well, the only thing I find with power dvd is it stops playing now and again and I have to press play for it to continue.
I'm on windows 7 and that asks me do I want to convert it,I don't generally but with the planet of the apes I did but it played ok just a smaller file size.
The only thing I can suggest if you haven't already done so is instead of drag and drop, try right clicking on the file and copy/paste and see if that makes a difference??

i tried like mx video player. mobo player etc almost anything with neon codec support. it can barely play a 720p wmv properly, audio just out of sync and video is laggy. something is not right here. however i try some other resolution like 480p and it works fine.
my ex optimus 3d can even play almost all video format with hardware acceleration support.
some media players does not use hardware acceleration!! thats is way is not work fluently

I will try avi files, and no to convert.

what kind of video can the galley-app play?
I would much like to stream to my Sony TV without HDMI-cabel, same way it works with pictures
Hi,
What is the best program to play movies and subtitles for XPS?
If you try to copy videos or audio it will sometimes ask you to format the file, simply don't allow this when the window pops up.
This will be different for every computer depending on what codecs you have installed.
Also sounds like your possibly not waiting long enough for the files to copy over? Might not be showing the progress bar for what ever reason, slow pc?
Replace the miniUSB cable perhaps with another.
Try a different computer to drag and drop the files across.
There's a 2gb file size limit with the fat file system, a 720p or lower avi movie that's about 700mb is plenty quality for a screen this small, you don't need large blueray 1080p clips taking up memory for a very minor difference in quality.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
Also you can put files anywhere on the memory, player will pick up the files automatically.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
If you use a combination of bubbleupnp and dice player you can play almost all movie formats just fine. It is perfectly possible to play videos from other dlna servers as well as play videos from the phone on other dlna renderers.

MX Player on ICS leak question

Hi all,
I recently jumped the bandwagon and installed ICS leak on it. Tried Dagr8 Alpha 1 and 2. I also tried Collective. I really love those leaked roms (except maybe Alpha 2, so much lag in my case).
I need help with MX player. One of the biggest reason I bought the note was to watch a lot of my anime series when in the bus going to work/from work. I download animes in MKV format and the subtitles there are embedded. The anime I download are usually 1080p and 720p. I download this video size because sometimes I watch it on my computer too. So I just download it at large sizes so I can watch it anywhere with good quality.
Anyway, when I installed ICS and installed MX player, I'm having horrible out of sync with audio/video. It also gets worse when you watch the video longer. Sometimes out of sync takes a 4-second difference.
If I change from Hardware acceleration to Software, out of sync goes away but the playback is sooo laggy that you can't watch it too. ** Oh maybe not totally go away, as I just experienced right now (while typing this) that I had an out of sync issue even in software decoder. **
I never had any issue with GingerBread. All my anime video plays fine even in 1080p. I have not tried converting to Mp4 but I don't think it will make sense because it was working before with GB. I have a lot of anime and converting it would be a pain for me. Maybe there is a trick that I can do in ICS to fix this issue.
Are you guys also having out of sync issues with some videos in MX player? If not, please try playing videos in MKV with embedded subs and let me know.
I really want to stick with ICS. This is the only reason I'm going to go back to GB before I get to work on monday Please help, I really don't want to go back to GB anymore.
Thanks
bumping thread.
or maybe others can suggest a player that is like MX that uses hardware acceleration to play clips.
Mobo Player does not and I can't find any other player out there that uses HW accel for playback.
Thanks

Thanks. That would be awesome. I'm actually looking for a 1080p mkv movie video (even trailers will do) so I could just test it without subs. Surprisingly I can't find one .. lol.
If you are going to download, try mkv animes + embedded subs. I did other test with some other animes and noticed that not are all the same. Although all of anime have audio/video/subs sync issues but some of them only has .5 seconds lag. Some 2 seconds, extremes are 4 seconds. I would assume that whatever is causing this, is how the anime was encoded but when I play it with Gingerbread, not a single sync issue happens. So its either the ICS leak or MX Player.
Thanks again. Looking forward for your test results

Just downloaded ninja scroll episodes to test. The files are mkv with English subs. Everything seemed to be in perfect sync, but hard to tell on a subtitled video.
Just so you know, these are 65mb files so they're not of the highest quality but everything runs fine in terms of audio sync.

I still have few hours to test. Thanks for spending time and testing it

Ok so I downloaded ghost in the shell 2.0 and it's 720p mkv format. The mx player would not use hardware encoding to play it, but it played via "sw encoding (fast)".
I loaded up the subtitles and let it run. I skipped several places every 20 minutes or so to test. It played with no issues, audio and video were in sync with the subtitles.
You may want to try software encoding (fast) on your mkv files, maybe that'll work for you as well. You can adjust the encoder in the settings.

Ok I will try to do it. Maybe tomorrow since I already flashed back to GB. I only used software decode (not the fast one). But its weird that you don't have HW playback. hmmm. All my videos played in HW acceleration fine, of course except the audio/video sync.
Hmm ..
I actually found something interesting. MX player has issues with some subtitles with our leak ICS.
I tried Dice Player which also uses HW acceleration and I don't have any issue with the same video.
I also tried other ICS video players that use HW and there are no issues.
So, i think its just MX player.

[Q] Video Playback Issues

When ever I play a video on my phone at specific points videos artifact. It will always be the same point but not the same point in a video but different points for different videos. I have looked all over and have not found anyone with this issue for the EVO LTE. I am wondering what this could be. I have tried all that I could think of. I changed roms, video formats, video players. The videos work fine on my other devices and my PC.
Attached is a part of a video that artifacts. Any help would be appreciated
A list of what file types and players you are using on your device would be helpful...
.mv4 and .mp4
And every player I have tried does this.
Do these videos work on someone else's EVO LTE?
Do they work on another Android device (perhaps the OG EVO)?
Do you have a spare SD card you can copy the videos to, one that you have performed a fresh format on?
I recently got vlc for my phone and it plays the videos back just fine. VLC to the rescue yer again.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
use MX Player. its the best video player for the LTE that i have found so far, its made for phones with dual cores or more. used to use Vplayer but it didnt work well on this phone
I will try that out, VLC player is able to play this one video without problems but it will not play any 720p full length episodes. The video that works fine is short and it not 720p.
EDIT:
So apparently MX Player crashes at the exact same point that VLC does in the video, also MX player does not seem to run the video as smooth.
Using hardware decoding makes the video not run as smooth and crashes at that point. Software decoding is smoother and just artifacts at the point instead of crashing.
I found the issue. I had a bad USB hub. The videos play fine now.

Galaxy S 3 can't handle video..?

Okay so I didn't really think I would have this problem with this phone. I put a mkv video on my phone and I went to go watch it but it stutters I'm not sure how to explain it but it's really choppy. It doesn't complete freeze though. I was using this in the stock video player. This was because I wanted to try pop up play. So I was bummed that I couldn't use the stock player which is the only one that does pop up play. So I tried mx player but it also has the same problem playing back the video. Wth can the s3 not handle mkv videos? I didn't have this problem on my note. Does anybody else have this also? Is there a fix or something? The screen is beautiful but it's not smooth playback its too choppy.

Need more information. MKV is a container codec, not a video or audio codec. What is the video and audio codec, and is it using something like 10bit color?

I've seen that happen on Epic Touch with most mkv format videos.
Try RockPlayer.
Yeah I was also having problems with certain video files. A couple of .m4v's that I tried to put on my phone would crash the video app if I put in or pulled out my headphones while the video was playing. Seems to be isolated to particular file types/codecs.
what is the res of the video you are trying to watch. what is the actual video codec on it and are there subtitles?
You could try VLC for android:

Try something for me , connect phone to your PC thro USB , and then try playing video on your phone , report results ?
I'm not sure how to see what is the actual video and audio codec, how do i check it?
The video files are mkv 720p blu ray rips.
I tried connected my phone to my pc via usb and tried playing video like you said and i couldnt really see a difference.
I think we need to wait for the video player app developers to produce extensions that work with or provide true hardware acceleration for our new hardware, the best player I've found right now for the GS3 is BSplayer lite.
Ironically BSplayer gave me the worst performance on the GS2.
anyway try BSplayer lite on your GS3.
720p bluray rips will kill most portable devices they are MUCH higher bitrate than a standard 720p movie. you need to downsize them if you want to play them smothly
Try MXplayer with their ARM7 codec pack.
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=mxplayer&c=apps
I just converted a bluray movie down to 1280x536 with Handbrake and it plays like butter.

I also experienced problems with the 720p .mkv files I ripped my blurays to for portable use - but moreso with sound being out of sync with the video. I had the same problem with my GS2 when I upgraded to 4.0. I re-ripped my whole collection using the same compression rate into .mp4 and they all play flawlessly now. Anything I have that is .mkv simply doesn't play nice on both my GS2 and GS3 with 4.0.

MKV is not a codec...it's just a container format like AVI.
From my experiance/experimenting biggest culprit is always "stagefright" being enabled , screws up hardware decoding on many levels. On my ATT GS3 , it was enabled by default, i could not play my 720p 60fps music videos , i got "Blade Buddy" it lets you mess with some system settings easily (however i dont know witch setting specifically triggered it), after messing with it and doing soft reboot , my GS3 now performs as it should , can play even higher then 720p , latest one i tried was 1440x810 @ 60fps High profile H264 , all smooth and nice , [email protected] was to much though , all common <=30fps videos play problem free.
In Blade Buddy under Basic settings i toggled off "Compatibility Mode"
Under Advanced settings i toggled off stagefright , then hitting menu button clicking apply , and selecting soft reboot.
There must be something wrong with your setup or codecs or i dont know what because i have a NAS and i STREAM 720p blu-ray rips of about 5gbs a movie off my HDD attached to my router, i stream them and get 0 lag, even when i advance the movie, it takes 1/4 of a second to buffer and play the movie, and again i get 0 lag. i use BS player Lite
so its not the phone, trust me
I have played mkv videos and I have no problem ... the video format is hd 720 mp4

So it seems that some people can play 720 blu ray rips just fine with no problem while others can't and need to change the format. I find this rather odd. I haven't tried streaming these videos but ill try and report back but I think it would be worse because if it can't handle playing from the device the added pressure of streaming would make it worse. Somebody mentioned audio being out of sync, I don't have that problem at all. And it's not like the video is severely laggy its like it plays but it stutters as it goes to the next frame its so hard to explain ill see if I can record it and show you guys.

for a 720p bluray rip/hd rip movie, i still run it through handbrake to get the file size down. i set res to 1280xtakewhatevericanget from the original source. output as mp4 in that case (still h.264). i tend to crank the audio up a bit too, since it helps on airplanes or whatever with movie dialogue.
i haven't really tried dragging over a full on 4+gb 720p blu ray rip .mkv file...then again mtp sucks ass, so i'll do anything i can to get file size down.

Fat32 maxes out with 2GB files.
it's not the mkv that's causing it's issue, it's what's inside the mkv that's causing the problems. not just codec but bitrate and other small things could matter. Also, if it's software and not hardware like the ipad, even if meets the criteria hardware wise, it can cause an issue.
