No space left on my wifes phone! - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone help me?
My wife and I both have X10's.
I'm running a custom rom and she is running the stock 2.2 (I believe it's 2.2, could be 2.1).
I tried to install an app on her phone and it said that she was out of space! She doesn't have a lot of apps on the phone, nor does she have a lot of junk on it....she has about 4 games, and not a lot else.
I rooted it and took off a few of the dumb things like Moxier mail and such but I couldn't see any way to see how much space she had and I can't figure out why she'd be out of space and I've downloaded a LOT more stuff than she has and I haven't gotten any warning....

Your wife is using stock 2.1 not 2.2 since its not out officially. There are lot of apps that can be removed from stock which i remember listed on a sticky thread (in app section u think) if you don't know what you are doing then id strongly suggest your wife to use erics Rom for 2.1
Its already fully optimized

thanks guys....I'll look at erics Rom for 2.1
and also check out link2sd

If you don't mind me asking, which app were you trying to install?
I tried installing plants vs zombies and peggle but both said my phone didn't have enough space. I easily had enough space for the install... It's possible it might be referring to amount of available ram.

You can also check the caches under each app and delete that. You be suprised how much memory apps take up.

Yes I also had that on 2.1. When I got enough space some apps still won't install because it thinks there is not enough space. After you've removed a lot of apps (that will free up memory) it gets installed. You could try installing with Flashtool the .apk, I think that that will work.

Look in the Android Development forum, you will find there the EWJET rom, that's what he means.
Goodluck!

Also possible, but if you say that tell him also what permissions !
You've to cross the permissions like this:
x x /
x / /
x / /

just tell your wife to get rid of the justin bieber fart soundboards because they take up a lot of space.
what games does she have installed? plants vs zombies is rediculously HUGE.

Angry birds also eats space and recent release of peggle ways in at 70mb before its even installed!
as above clear cached files ...inc browser caches if its storing to internal mem as opposed to sd card!
I use Diskusage from the market it shows all app data and sd card data along with their cache space used
DiskUsage provides a way to find files and directories on storage card which consume a lot of space.
Displays diagram with directories/subdirectories proportional to their size.
Press MENU for actions.
Integrates with OI FileManager and Astro.

thanks for the good suggestions....I'm thinking about putting on erics rom...I just installed in on my phone and it flys....
Question: Since we have the same identical phone...could I take an Xrecovery back up on my phone...copy the file to her (soon to be) Xrecovery folder, and then recover her phone? that would save some time and hassle.

First thing:
Install Titanium backup *** root version from market.
Once you load it, it says how much space is left in every place of the phone.
4 games on a stock Froyo is quite a lot actually, rsrsrs, the stock rom is very BIG.
normal games may have 20MB or much more sometimes(like angry birds).
Yet the best would be to put a stable Froyo custom rom or eclair.
Womans(mine at least) doesn't want to much of the phone, just want it working, rsrsrs, so that would be enough for her.
She may have some app that is bloating the system space, google earth, some gps maybe?

Well,
I tried to take an Xrecovery back up of my phone and restore her phone....all went perfectly....except that her phone had my information on it such as the google account.
I put her google account info in and it wouldn't let me delete mine out of her phone.... so I was stuck.
So then I tried to do a factory restore and things went bad...no signal apn info....no keyboard....it was horrible.
I messed around and messed around and restored her phone to a MIUI rom that she previously had, but then I couldn't make calls...no apn information!
I tried to import apn information to her phone via an APN back up/restore but it didn't work....
So then I finally, I just put the stock rom on her phone this morning so she could get to work and I could start again tonight.....
arggggg....

Getting Google "CLOUD" Music Sync working on the Fascinate (Froyo, not tested on 2.1)

Getting Google "CLOUD" Music Sync working on the Fascinate (Froyo, not tested on 2.1)
Figured out how to get google music sync working on the fascinate and decided to share it with everyone!
Tested and working on DarkREVENGE v1 (and I assume v2) and Super Clean 2.8 however I suspect this will work on many roms and devices! doubt this will work on any 2.1 devices seeing as the APK is 2.2+ sorry for those of you running 2.1..
Now tested on MiUi Fascinate 1.2.25 and confirmed working!!
IMPORTANT: Your music must be set up like this sd/media/music if it is not located there it will not be uploaded to the cloud!
Known issue(s) You cannot manage your "cloud" just yet there is no web interface yet and i'm assuming this is still in the "testing" phase.
Now lets get to the fun!
Install this apk (adb push or install as a normal APK) make sure that Music.apk is deleted already if not go ahead and do that right now.
http://db.tt/tXHSuYH
Alternative Mirror
http://www.multiupload.com/PAYDTSPCYQ
You should see "Music & "Jumpertest" after installing.

go to account settings and to your google account you should now see "Sync Music" PRESS IT! and let it sync.
When that is done go into your app drawer and open up "Jumpertest" click on the "Controls" tab
Don't forget to click the "Accounts" tab and check off your gmail account it should ask for permissions (you will see an upside-down triangle with a !) in the status bar.
Next click on "Start Peer" it should work IF you do get an FC try reinstalling the apk or maybe rebooting IF you get a "authtoken error" go back into account settings and click on "Sync Music" again and try again!
(if all went well you should see "Peer started")
Next go ahead and click on "Import Local Media"
(once again if all went well you should see "Import complete")
Now that is all setup and time to access your music on the "CLOUD"
Go ahead and open up the Music app
Press the "Menu" softkey on your Fascinate to bring up the menu popup and select "Library Options" and after that select "Streaming Only"
(If you are not a complete newb or illiterate) you should now see your music that is on the cloud! Yay for clouds
If it did not work this means you are likely incapable of following directions that a five year old probably could and you should not have a rooted device!
However if it does not work and you are 9000% sure you did everything correct please list what rom you are on and method of installing the apk.
Hope you all enjoy and give me thanks if you found this helpful
If you can't take the harsh sarcasm (not really) in this post then please get off XDA and do not attack me on this thread.. do you guys not have anything better to do? if you have nothing good to say don't say anything at all! Thanks.

Was pretty fast for me and the perks are being able to access your music from the cloud and bigger storage space than an SD card if you don't mind moving your music collection in "waves" to your SD card as I said this is not final but it's working and working well until we get something more "official"

Hey "bro" why don't you lay off your high horse. DiGi is learning and progressing, not seeing anything come from you, but yet you want to sit here and say he has an attitude??
1. If you felt the need to look at this post (not being a mod) then this interest you, so shut it and if you dont like it, then move along.
2. IRC is a place for chat and learning hint the abbreviation "Internet Relay Chat". It doesn't say "yes were going to be nice to you and hold you hand", once again get off your high horse.
3. Quit being a **** on the forums, yeah you're cool. How about this, quit dishing hate on others work, unless you take time out to work on something your self, and then have tons of questions asked to you, and see how frustrating it becomes. I highly doubt he was being a "****" or "juvenile" about anything, it's just the way you seemed to take it.
At this time, there is not a way to get it from your desktop to the cloud. Seeing as how you are not even supposed to do this yet..... that feature has not been implemented lol
BTW, anyone calling digi bad names is a complete douche, I <3 digi, he has never acted like an ass or anything that I have EVER seen..
Oh, and thank you Digi

You would have to plug your phone into your PC, transfer the music to the proper folder you have setup for this app and then synch. All music in that folder will be uploaded to Google's servers so you can access it at anytime from the APP.

New Market 3.1.3 (3.1.5 is up now too)

Edit, as of October 3, I'd suggest holding off on the 3.1.6 Market update. Could be fishy. It's signed differently than Google does. Mine below are fine.
EDIT: The new market is cool and all, but I have noticed that if I have multiple google accounts, it switches back and forth... which is REALLY annoying. If you notice issues, go to menu > accounts and make sure your primary is selected. Other than this, it is great.
EDIT 2: there is now a 3.1.5 - the bug mentioned above still exists
DOWNLOAD LINK FOR 3.1.5
If you had 3.1.3, it may just auto-update for you.
---------- below is older information for 3.1.3 --------------
You can thank @MastaTM (XDA: Official_Master) for the new Market (3.1.3)
http://www.multiupload.com/41FQ6PQ3MS
The below is litterally pasted from androidpolice (again, they are on point). I bolded what is new.
Wow, Google is on a roll with the Android Market lately. Since the release of Market v3.0, a number of small updates have come to the Android Market recently, but this is by far the biggest yet. Google has added the long-awaited +1 functionality to the Android Market (which has been on the web version of the Market for quite some time), along with a few other goodies.
There's a brand-new settings menu, as well as click-to-read explanations of app permissions (not developer customizable, unfortunately).
There are also 2 brand-new Market icons to spruce things up a bit (within the Market itself - unfortunately, the app drawer icon is still the same).
For convenience's sake, the size in megabytes of each app, along with its latest update date, have been moved from the bottom of descriptions to the top of individual app pages, which is a very useful change in our book.
Moving on to the thumbnail navigator, Google added a long-overdue sliding transition - a nice touch that makes the Market feel more polished.
Oh, and did we mention you can now use an optional custom PIN for purchases on your phone, instead of leaving your Google Checkout wide open for anyone that picks up your device? If you have kids, or your phone is stolen, this is one awesome feature to have - and really, it makes a lot of sense.
You'll need Unknown Sources enabled in the Settings -> Applications menu to install it.

Someone in the General apps forum uploaded what they claim is version 3.1.6. I pushed it into system/app and over wrote vending.apk but I still have version 3.1.5. Others are reporting success, though. Saying it looks a little more polished.
Edit: Removed link due to suspicious nature of this "update". Search it out and install it on your own, but I've restored my nandroid backup and am done with it until more is known about it.

Android Market 3.3.11

It appears an update to the Android Market is now being pushed out to handsets, and we've got the .apk file for you right now.
Warning: this updated Market does not seem to work very well on Honeycomb tablets, there appears to be a number of glitches.
What's changed? So far, we've found:
•New setting: Auto-update apps (presumably, sets all apps to auto-update mode, woohoo!)
•New setting: Update over Wi-Fi only
•New setting: Auto-add shortcuts (automatically adds homescreen shortcuts for new apps, ala Honeycomb)
•Smaller font
•New app drawer icon
•Microphone (voice command) button in search menu
•Star rating chart on app pages
•Minor UI tweaks

Update: I just installed the market. Everything seems to be in working order. Just d/l the apk. Use ur Root Explorer/File Manager. Run the .apk and install over ur old market. No need to replace vending.apk or setting permissions. Works fine as I did it that way. Smooth as butter.

No Films on Desire HD
Hey. Im on an Atrix in the UK on O2 and am running CM7 (the latest beta) and now have the latest Market (3.3.11) from another link.
I've also forwarded the .apk to my wife and mate, both of whom are on a Desire HD in the UK.
Funny thing is, I have the option of Films, yet, with the same .apk, neither of them do. Just Apps, Games and Books. Very strange! Can anyone explain it? Either I'm not meant to have Films, or they are not meant to!
By the way, I have also used the same .apk on my Uk Transformer, which is unrooted. On there, I too have the options for Films!
I suspect it is HTC thing, but how/why?
(The reason I went looking for the .apk in the first place was because wifey was still stuck with version 2 of market as the Google update wasn't not coming through. Apparently that was an HTC thing - apparently they only release their Market updates with ROM updates. Is that true? or is my wife's phone glitchy? Hers is std uk Voda unrooted)
Thanks guys.

[Q] The case of Android RAM advertised and actually available

Hello guys! I am new here. I am from India.
I recently bought Xolo A500. Pretty good phone.
I have a few questions on the hardware/software. Thought you people are the best in answering my queries.
Please refer the screenshot I have attacjed.
1) The tech spec says 512MB RAM. But in the android task manager, I found out that the actual RAM is around 342 MB.
>> Thats a whopping 33% loss in the spec and what is seen in the android task manager
What is the reason for this missing RAM?
2) And also if you notice of the 207MB being used, apps running currently on my android phone is around 50 MB (notice the part of blue color as shown by android task manager)
>> Thats around 25% of the available RAM less what is mentioned in 1
What other apps are running taking up 75% of the RAM?
3) This is the screenshot at phone bootup. I can show you that the RAM gets depleted so badly that after 2 days from bootup, the RAM used by apps other than what is mentioned is very high
Is this something wrong with my phone or everybody has noticed this?
Thanks a lot in advance!
That is normal. Actual RAM in hardware will differ from usable RAM because of the formatted capacity and because some of it is allocated to other things like the GPU. For example, my s3 has 2gb ram but actual usable is about 1.56gb.

I understood the hardware part. But how do you attribute the major chunk of ram in my second screenshot? You can see that the apps running (listed) are using meager amount of ram. Can you please have a look at it? What other apps are filling up the ram?
Thanks for your response.
The RAM not being used by your running apps is being used by the Android OS. Just like Windows requires RAM even while you're not running any programs.
Also, I forgot to originally add that some apps are cached so that they can be opened again quickly at a later time.

So, basically, I end up with few 10's of MBs if I buy a phone with 512MB ram?! Isn't that much of a ram hogger apps?!
Is there any means I can get to know what those android apps are? Most of the apps I tried showed only what is shown in the android task manager.
I assume the phone in question originally came with an older Android OS like Gingerbread installed. Going back to older firmwares is one way to decrease the load on the system, but another way is to use TitaniumBackup to uninstall unessential apps like Google Now and weather widgets and the like. With such a small amount of RAM originally available though, you will unlikely be able to increase it by much on any firmware other than Gingerbread.

No, all is OK. Don't worry about the RAM usage. Android (and many other UNIX-based operating systems) is designed to try to use all the RAM available. Sounds crazy, I know, but in Android free-RAM means actually wasted-RAM.

It actually came with ICS 4.0.4. Not gingerbread.

But the foreground apps, like say, a game that I am playing requesting for more memory is getting killed abruptly. Foreground apps should be on priority. Right?

Yes, but when it's killed? When you press Home and do anything else? (if so, this is normal).
There are different methods to free your RAM:
1. Use a task killer -> I recommend Clean master
then go Setting - Tasks then choose which apps you want them not to be ignored
(You can use app widget for one click kill)

}
2. Root your device, then delete unimportant system apps -> I recommend Titanium backup (ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE YOU DELETE ANYTHING)
3. Use Greenify [Root needed] (Use app widget for fast hibernation)
4. Use Startup manager
With these four steps together your can free your RAM to no less than 50%

The startup manager thing worked (a little bit)!!! Check out the screenshot.
The problem with the other way you have mentioned is it requires rooting. This is an Indian phone. I never got the stock rom (and dont ever think about the sources). If I root it, I am lost forever and the organization I work for requires unrooted phone to make sure that the exchange services work.

The problem with clean master is this:
1) The clean master app itself takes around 30mb which is too much considering my phone ram
2) It clears only cached background process (I am ok with the cached background process taking up free ram)

Good news! After rooting my phone and trying out my luck online, I finally found out that mediaserver was the application eating my ram!
Below links helped me out.
https://community.freescale.com/docs/DOC-93326
http://freepine.blogspot.in/2010/02/analyze-memory-leak-of-android-native.html
Not sure if mediaserver itself or any other app making use of media server is filling up the ram.
Have any of you guys come across this problem?

Titanium Backup Elements Safe to Freeze for Better Battery, More Free RAM

If you like me, you have a rooted Galaxy Mega, and just want less bloatware, better battery, and extra 100-200MB of free RAM, want to keep your stock ROM and not deal with instaling a custom one, those are 120 elements you can safely freeze with Titanium Backup if you dont use any of them offcourse, and be sure your phone will work just fine but snappier... when i restart my Mega, and clear the RAM after everything loads, my used RAM is 320MB/1.32GB
Here is a screenshot list:

ya, just freeze, dont delete, is diferend, you can freeze all that and then delete titanium backup, itll stay frozen unless you install TB back and unfreeze it. try it, guarantee it wont brick your phone. been doin it with all my phones, check my profile see how many of those guides i made thru the years with all my diferend phones lol
Thanks!!! It seems much faster.

is the same thing, but half of those things arent allowed to be turned off from the apo manager..
If you are rooted, buy Titanium Backup if you havent already, the best purchase you can make if u own android phones, as before you freese/delete anything, you can simply back the ROM up, and if something isnt working just restore.
also as i found out, when i was on T-Mobile bloated ROM, some of T-Mo branded bloatware was turning back on by itself on phone restart after turning it off from the app manager...
a lot of those elwments are safe to DELETE with TB... ATT or T-Mo software and Samsung bloatware are some of those...
rest i recomend just leave frozen..
lmk if u guys need any other info.. i have been into the extreme with some of my ROMs i had one debloated was running perfectly normal with what i need only on 32 elements haha, i think is one of the Threats i made named "Extreme Bloatware Remowal" if u look at my profile..

I deleted a handful, rhapsody, tmo junk and things like trip visor (or whatever it's called). The rest I froze... One day I will back up how it is and try deleting things bit by bit.
I did not freeze a few things you posted because I actually need them. For ex : text to speech, resource manager and tags, to name handful.
I am sure the email client uses a ton but I have not seen anything that is as good, shame. k9 is ok but needs constant sync.
I also froze a few things you did not.
Thanks for the guide.

Aye.. first and foremost, you gota make sure you only freese what you WONT use offcourse... i dont use any fints lets say, i freese em all, dont want em to load on device startup and take RAM.. same with Wallpapers or Widgets.. i dont use any, i freeze em all...
And about the bricking.. i gue the phone needs some of the elements to be present on restart to boot... even it the are frozen/turned off is diferend that just been deleted...
Not every Android phone is like that tho, i had phone i delete everything just leave 35 elements and is working fine... not the Mega i guess..
Amazing.. Really good looking. But i want to know how it's possible to safely freeze with 120 elements Titanium Backup..
