Hello,
I just purchased an Archos 70IT, 8Go, with the latest formware (2.3.something)...
I want to get rid of this menubar on the bottom (moving it top) and also increase the 300Mo application limit :s
so it seems that only rooting can help...
I looked through this forum, found the "archanagel" method, but also that it does not work on my firmware...
I don't care so much about warrenty... can someone please just give me a hint as to how to root my device and, also important, some tools to do what I want to do ?
thanks in advance for your help
If you just want root, use the chulri root method look here at forum
If you want extra functions like 3g support,dvb-t support, increasing ram (swap, compcache), increase the apps partition and many other, try Urukdroid
With both ways you loose warranty
I tried Urukdroid, but got strucked at the very beginning, unable to flash the kernel :s
I enter bootloader, but the menu à have seems different of the one given... Perhaps because I am on latest firmware (2.3.2) ?
And you installed the SDE first?
from Archos Site ? feel bad... I forget starting there :s
So I think I have the answer here...
is there a topic which can help me step by step doing so ?
And is it sure that Urukdroid installs well on Archos70IT with 2.3.2 firmaware ?
because actually, I don't want to "kill" my device
UrukDroid bypass the Archos firmware, (you have the choix in the bootloader) so the version don't change anything
Somebody testet this system on an archos70it?
Also about sdk... any special precaution to take?
Thanks for your help all
I have a A70 IT and UrukDroid runs very well!
About the SDK, just follow the instructions. Oh, and it void the firmware waranty.
I will try this evening... hope not to post an SOS here after
Good luck
I made everything, and it works
nice !
but here a small question : if I update now to the latest firmware, will it change my device ? will I loose the root etc ?
thanks for all the help
UrukDroid and official Android from Archos are each in their own partition, so upgrading one will not change the other^^

Yep and if you've questions post it
in fact I have two already
1) Archos and Uruk are on two partitions... How can I force Uruk to load when I shutdown/switch on again without selecting it "manually" ? my archos wants to boot on archos OS all time :/
2) about the update... I have it in Uruk boot (he wants me to update Android to 2.3 when I am on Uruk...)
thanks
It asks you beacause UrukDroid is based on an older version of the Archos Android.
And to force the start of UrukDroid, for me it is by default, and if not, you just have to start it once in the Recovery Menu and then it is by default.

1) Press the Volume Down Button when you startup, then choose Developer Edition
From now on your archos will boot UD normally
2) Its the Archos firmware 2.3.26, not Android 2.3 Gingerbread
2.3.26 is still Android 2.2.1 Froyo If you want 2.3.26 you have to use the normal Archos Os, not Urukdroid or wait (Until UD 1.1 is ready)
so updating will not modify uruk ? (remove root etc for example...) ? if update is fine I will do it
Also, it seems that Uruk is installed on SD Card... if I want to remake a clean "advanced" install on internal storag... how can I do this ? (since if I install it again, it seems to me that I will have 3 OS on my Archos... I just want "Uruk" on the "internal"

You just have to do the Urukdroid install process again And choose advanced
The UrukDroid website provide a guides for the installation : Installation of UrukDroid

Hello Guys,
I am pretty much new to Android here (Used to be a Windows Mobile user), although I am starting to read and learn more about it. I felt so happy to be out of the Microsoft Mobile spell, it was horrible and the software just lives in the world of its own, it lags at almost anything and in short, it just cant work.
Alright, so I got my Hero 2 weeks back and I wanted to know a few things, which I hope you can help me with it.
- I have about 60 over applications on my SD card, and I wish to use the MoDaCo ROM, How am I able to backup the applications from the current stock rom and transfer them to SD Card or somewhere else?
( Will Market still recognise the apps I downloaded after I flashed my phone to MoDaCo? )
- One more question, everything when the MoDaCo rom releases a new version, lets say from 2.9 to 3.0, must I reflash and build everything from scratch again?
Thanks A Lot,
Jeremy

hi,
well to answer your questions,
you can install all your applications directly on your sd card using app2sd.(it is incorporated in the modaco roms but bear in mind you have to correctly format ur sd card in ext3 partition for app2sd application to work . Once you've done that , you can flash anything and you'll not have any problem.
2)concerning paid applications, yes. market will automatically recognise applications you bought once you sign in your google account(they'll be recognised but you'll have to download it manually) but paid ones, nope.
3)when you upgrade from the same built( meaning from 2.8 to 3.0 modaco for example) , you dont have to wipe before flashing cause both roms use as base the official 2.73 rom. thus you wont lose any of your settings. However, when you upgrade from a modaco rom to community rom 1.6 , you should normally wipe.(builts are not the same here, one being cupcake and the other eclair)

Thanks A lot for your response, and I have some questions again.
- Where could I find an app to format my SDCard to Ext3? Will my Windows PC still be able to read EXT3?
- You mentioned that market will recognise my downloaded applications after I root the phone right? So, I dont really get it - I have to download it manually? Meaning? ( All my apps are free, no paid )
- Its pleasing to hear that I don't have to wipe when I upgrade to 3.0.
- Oh and something which I missed out, I am supposed to flash a Radio at the same time right? Which one is the best to date? I heard that there was many versions. ( I'm using a GSM Hero)
Sorry for the inconvinience.
Cheers,
Jeremy
So yeah, I've been using UrukDroid for a while now but I only just noticed that none of the camera apps (Camera, ZXing Barcode Scanner, Google Goggles) start up successfully. I've tried doing a full firmware reset in recovery mode, remove and reinstall SDE, and reinstalling Uruk, and noticed a few things.
-Stock: Works
-Stock with SDE installed (boot stock): Works
-Stock with Uruk installed (boot stock): Works *i think*
-Stock with Uruk installed (boot Uruk): Does not work
-Remove stock firmware + boot Uruk: Does not work
Does anyone know a solution to this? I'd really like to be able to use Uruk with camera working, it's the only method I have of having virtually unlimited space for apps in system storage.
Edited: I can't report a bug in the Uruk bug reports thread because this subforum is agraahdhsargh, don't tell me about it
Edited: Can $auron please add ipv6 support in UrukDroid? There's already an alternative zImage for chulri's root that has it, I'd really like to be able to use Google Goggles <3
A friend of mine (achosrocker) has the same probpem with his 43, but i dont have that poblem because im using a 101 without an HD cam..
So its only the camera of the 43
Can we get $auron to add support for the A43IT in the 2.3 update of Urukdroid?
Thanks.

What update do you mean?
Currently we are on version 0.7, the next will be version 1.0
Maybe you meam the archos firmware update this week?
this is version is 2.3.20.
but i think if many people report this bug sauron and his guys will be fix this
Yeah, whichever version of uruk gets updated to 2.3.x, I'd like to have support for the A43's camera. (I'm not sure what kernel or android feature isn't compiled into uruk that allows the HD camera on the A43 to work).
If $auron is reading this, I would be willing to help do testing on my device if necessary.
Also, for some reason (I'm not sure if it's UrukDroid-related) every time my A43 reboots the mediascanner deletes all files under Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos. It leaves the folders alone, although the respective apps seem to remove all traces of any files from their caches.
I get the same FCs on my 70IT with Uruk so it's not a matter of having a A43IT support I guess.

Oh really?
i dont heard about that problem once, but i have an idea:
Reinstall urukdroid over "normal" installation way or you wait untill 1.0 version and then you do the normal installation way, not the update way over **/UrukUpdate
Are you saying we all should reinstall UrukDroid, or just him? (And does "normal" mean the "easy" install option?) I for one would rather not have to reinstall from scratch unless absolutely necessary as I have a lot installed and configured and have even written a few changes to the system filesystem (new font, hosts file, etc.)

Wait, I absolutely can't use things like the barcode scanner in UrukDroid (just force close the moment it tries to actually operate the camera -- though the initial startup with that information screen works fine, it FCs as soon as I hit the button to start the actual scanner part where it accesses the camera) but if I reboot to the stock firmware it works in that. Are you absolutely sure it doesn't work in your stock firmware? Really the stock firmware shouldn't even know if UrukDroid is installed or not, right?

Interesting. Do you suppose it could have a problem then with it being HD? Maybe the resolution or format causes a problem?

1) Just him, because he has an A70 and i've never heard before that problem on this device
2) Yap it means the easy install method
3) I suppose so, because i've never heard about this FC problem at Archos devi es except the 43 - the only device with a 720p cam...
@Nazo: By stock with Uruk installed I mean the stock Archos firmware and the SDE using the Uruk kernel are installed, but I boot UrukDroid. I'm not sure if it makes a difference whether UrukDroid is installed or not on when booting the Archos firmware.
Also, for some reason I can't get Uruk 1.0 or 0.7 to reinstall, when I try booting the SDE with the respective kernel replacement, I get the error "UrukDroid 1.0 ERROR: Failed to mount rootfs /dev/mmcblk1p2" which is the second partition on the internal storage, apparently. The stock firmware (latest 2.3.20 android 2.2) works perfectly fine with no problems.
They seem to have fixed this for urukdroid 1.0. I have a 43IT and experienced the same problems with 0.7. I was really worried that I wasn't going to have a camera anymore, but after upgrading, it works! Hallelujah!
This might be anecdotal, but for the first couple hours the device kept overheating and shutting itself off. I just turned it off for a good half-hour and it worked just fine.
Also, I think $auron made a way to reinstall urukdroid from scratch, instead of upgrading, which might fix your current problem. Look on the urukdroid thread (last post) / the wiki when it's updated.
same here..did not work before 1.0 and does work fine now.(using rc3 have not yet updated to 'real' 1.0 but should not make any difference)
I didn't even know there was a 1.0 already. It took me a while to find it, but I managed to. If I did the "reinstall" option hoping not to wipe out all of the programs I had installed and configured and all of their saved data it would still force close on startup. I had to do a fully reinstall from scratch. Now the barcode scanner works again. Unfortunately, I lost Weatherbug (instant force close on start) which was the only weather app I had left that didn't force close, so I'm not sure that this was worth it at all since that was far more important to me than the barcode scanner. At least I can run it if I reboot to the stock firmware, but this is kind of a pain. I guess I'm glad to see the barcode scanner working with the update even if I'd give it up to get any of my weather apps working again (I really don't feel like reinstalling yet again to downgrade though.)
Hi folks,
I'm new to the XDA forums (so hey everyone!) but I'm not new to the android platform.
I picked up a Archos 101IT the other day and would like to ask a couple of questions if possible.
I sat last night and read the whole 240 pages of entries on the URUKDROID thread but my main question does not appear to have been covered previously.
So..........
1) Can I install URUKDROID version 1.5 even though my archos firmware is version 2.4.80? (the latest version i believe)
2) I read that the early versions of this custom ROM were recommended as SD card installations only.
Now as the ROM has been refined it is also suitable for allocation to internal memory.
Are there any known issues with doing it on the internal memories these days or have any issues since been ironed out?
1) As UD is completely seperated, it doesn't matter which OS is on.
2) No, no problems except that it is faster on internal.

hello gentlemen
i bought my viewpad 7 last week. after digging this forum i tried to root my tablet with super one click but i was unable coz it stuck in screen and happen nothing somehow i tried gingerbreak and it worked. as i am totally newbie in android os and i have no idea on programming. but the most important thing is clockwork recovery i saw couple of youtube videos and tried working but ended up with error . i dont know how to setup adb on my pc so i tried terminal emulator but no keyboard.. tried qtadb but show me '' permission denied'' now i am pulling my hair off. i have got rom manager installed on my tablet but whenever i ty to install update.zip it say signature error or somthing (i have got custom rom in my sd and renamed to update zip also i have clockwork recovery img and flash recovery) the only thing i need is a working terminal emulator as i have no idea on comand from pc.
so is there anybody who can give me a easy tutorial or make a video to demonstrate how can i get clockwork recovery installed also custom rom i would be really really greatful
hope someone saves me...
Hello & welcome, there's no need to panic but definitely - very important to be patient, set aside at least half a day or more, and, read - read - read. Take notes as you go along & do NOT rush.
If you have not gone thru this sticky, please do so - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236990
Sticky #1 is mandatory reading to take full advantage of the Vpad7 so that you can understand the basics, describe your Vpad's hardware & build information, etc. and how to press various buttons, go back, reset & get into Recovery and Bootloader. Without knowing it, you are prone to run into problems.
First, you need to check & make sure that your CWM (which verison) is properly installed & working (and, if so) - check under the Advanced submenu to verify "Signature Verification" status.
Do you have an "older" non-ITE or "newer" ITE multi-touch screen device, which determine which custom ROM can be used? Be specific, please ...
Generally speaking, there is no need to rename a downloaded ROM's zip file to update.zip for flashing ... so I suggest that you do more reading first.
Do you have USB debugging turned on? Applications - unkown sources turned ON to allow installation of non-Market apps? A working knowledge is essential to avoid (soft) bricking your device by being able to understand the process for Flashing - start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Flashing_Guide_-_Android
There's nothing simple & easy about all these, sorry - time & patience is a requirement to get everything working together. Look under the "Development" section for how to install ROM & the issues involved - there are just a handful of ROMs and you don't need to spend a hundred hours going thru all of them, a few hours of reading will do - a 10 minute Youtube video isn't going to do it. The best person to "save" you is you - YMMV. Regards.
thanks a million i finally made it. i used rom manager to install un official clockwork recovery and did install custom rom however i need one more final solution i was trying to get app2sd but my rom maker said it is built in inside the rom just need to creat ext3 but i guess i cant do that without comand so again is there any manual method to do that i saw an option on rom manager but it offers only 512mb partition but i want more may be 8 gb or 4gb i have 16gb sd card.. so can u help me pls...

1. Rom manager - I do not use them on my Android devices but if you are comfortable with it and help simplify your tasks & learning curve, good for you. Remember to backup, backup & backup your work & save it to more than one location - those "oops" happened to all of us, sometimes (and, at the worst time - Murphy's Law 101)
2. You only need a few files in its own sub directory or folder to properly run adb and busybox, and, to run the (good old DOS) command prompt from your PC - just need to type the commands carefully. Alternatively, Terminal Emulator (with or without the shell or user interface) can be downloaded from Android Market to the Vpad7 to install & run (it's not pre-loaded) with SU enabled ... (more reading for you on how-to's)
3. Not sure if you are referring to App2SD in Market (quite a few out there) or DT's A2SD and A2SDGUI in some of the custom ROM. Vpad7's custom ROM recommend 1 MB SD ext3/partition in general (ext4 is more advanced and challenging) - there is no need, advantage or benefit in a 2GB or 4GB ext3 with a 16GB mSD card (as you are allocating/reserving unused space that you cannot dynamically changed or reassign later on as you begin to run low on "general" storage space on the card - PLUS, you will have to reformat the card & wipe/lose everything on it, until it's restored from saved backup)
FYI - I keep the last 3 to 5 CWM Backup images/files on the mSD card and it's close to 3GB in size already, not counting pix, mp3's and saved videos.
4. Older version of CWM Recovery worked best for me in repeated ROM flashing & setup to partition/format the mSD, verison 5.0.2.6 can work but the newest one posted 5.0.2.7 did NOT work for me - YMMV, of course. Refer to the one in Cleanviewpad7 V1.0 and its instructions or EU Vapd 7 V1.7b - as I'm guessing from your description that your device is a newer ITE multi-screen hardware build. KWBR V3.2 ROM works with ITE and has the newer kernel and A2SD is easy to use per installation guide - it's lean & stripped of non-essential apps.
Have patience, backup & have run !

First, as I asked before, we do NOT know which ROM you are trying to use?
But, I'm going to guess - since I've flashed all of the working ITE ones here, and you are using KWBR v3.x - and, if so, please confirm or verify, yes or no.
If so, I had issues with its keyboard not showing up in terminal emulator, and there are different reasons for it - namely, including the OP developer's choice of installed KB. However, as a workaround - by running adB/busybox from Windows Vista's command prompt, I can execute instructions to re/mount, reboot, etc.
By installing a different KB & switching to it, it worked under terminal and I can run command prompts directly. There is a learning curve involved here - not something to rush, rather steps by steps - there are "stickies" in the threads and I do not want to further clutter up excellent guides already written up, 6 to 9 months plus ago - which I took time to read, follow & work with. I encourge you to do so as well.
My advice, the easiest to do, is to install & start with a different ROM - Cleanviewpad ROM is basic, simple & easy to install, virtually "bug" free and I suggest that you start with that. KB worked directly as a toggle, popping up from terminal emulator, and you can run commands from it.
Once you are comfortable & has everything working, you can optimize your A2SD and move apps from internal storage to mSD card, etc. and progress to the next level - EU Vpad 7 V1.7b ITE ROM is nice but from experience and reading the thread's posts, some "beginners" lacking knowledge & skills have trouble with it. By running a # of patches, I get it updated to the latest and it's running optimized to my personal liking - it's not entirely difficult to learn but not for someone completely new to Android OS.
Here's a link that you could've google right here in XDA - guide to ADB - bookmarked the link for you, please search for other guides, thanks

sorry for bothering u but would appreciate
Still waiting for a ROM for Viewpad 7e. Anyone know of one in development? Even the stock ROM bundled with CWM would be good so that we would have the ability to do a Nandroid backup.

Are you making good progress after rooting with custom ROM, learning a bit more about using adB and terminal emulator? I searched my storage bins for what I've kept for the Vpad7 - and I have NO luck yet finding the Froyo enhanced ROM. I did uploaded the EU V1.7b ITE custom ROM to Dropbox, along with the a2sd*.zip file (just in case, you are comfortable & ready to try - after backing things up) The A2SDGUI app is available in Market, just search & download & install up once the EU V1.7 ITE ROM is up.
A2SD does NOT need to be working for the ROM to do its basic functions, just that it will soon run low on internal storage/memory and that's where A2SD come in. If you find it useful, do a CWM backup first , then use the earlier version of CWM to reformat the mSD card again (thus, wiping it clean) and setup a 1MB ext3 partition per detailed instructions. Reboot & reconnect USB, and move/restored all of your saved files/folders/settings, etc. back to the mSD drive.
Next, flash the A2SD program by DT again just to be sure from Recovery - and then Restart into Recovery. Wipe cache & dalvik and boot up again - cross your fingers and A2SD should be up & running - check it with A2SDGUI and/or Titanium Backup will display various memory/partition/storage space & usage (used/free & total)

Again, I am and will be be responsible for anything if something goes wrong by using & flashing these zip files, they are unchanged or unaltered as I originally downloaded them. I'm simply posting them with the mess created by the multi-upload servers being offline, etc. as many folks are completely at a loss for what to do next. Full credits go to the OP/xda-developers for creating their masterpieces. If you are not comfortable or unsure, please do not proceed or assume the risk - the stock ROM, especially unrooted, isn't bloated by any means at all. There is NO over-clocking at this point for any ITE kernel for the Vpad7, period - none that I know of. Folks, do NOT confuse or try this with Vpad7e (which is a different device, sorry - cannot help at all)
Regards & do post with your results and share, and, if I can help further with the specifics, will be glad to do so.

Personally, I prefer and continue to use EU V1.7b for ITE, it has support for European languages as well as Asian languages. KWBR only support Euro language and the ROM is more "stripped" down with fewer apps, but it does work nicely "out of the box" with A2SD - downside being that internal memory/storage still seem to run low (once I re-install 50+ apps on my device)
For EU V1.7 - it's using an older version of Android Market, but can be easily updated if one wanted to, and, has a few more "basic" apps pre-installed including Documents To Go - and, by adding "Car Home" - I have a working 7" GPS device in the car when needed (sound volume is low, however due to those tiny stereo speakers) - I have been running it for 5+ months now, very smooth & few, if any, FC or freezes, and, Angry Birds running nicely on it, same with YouTube videos over WiFi connection (my 3G is on Edge network, so speed is SLOW and thus very choppy due to broadband speed, not CPU-related)
If you are running KWBR nicely now, do a Backup from CWM first, wipe cache/dalvik & system next - then flash the EU Rom and setup - to see whether you like it. And, if you do - follow the post's steps that I wrote up a while back and get A2SD running with the earlier verison of CWM for ext3 partition, restore/copy back all the files to the mSD card - and reboot/check for A2SD functionality, hopefully - it works without further tweaks - and I think you will like it.
If not, it's easy enough to get back into Recovery, wipe clean it first (very important to clear all traces) and RESTORE the KWBR image from the mSD, and reboot - and you can continue using it. Set aside 2 or 3 hours to do this slowly & right, and you will find the process educational & informative - and, as I always remind newbies - the rules are simple - Backup, Backup and Backup !!
Cheers & go have fun !
Hey there, guys.
I just have a few questions, might sound stupid, but hey - I'm not really that smart at this.
A - What exactly is Rooting? Some say it means to jailbreak so my tablet can do more than it already can. Other posts read that it means gaining access to Terminal/Rootshell. Now, I have an Archos 5 IT, and if it only means access to Terminal/Rootshell, then that should be easy, right? Because, all I have to do is go to the Archos website and download the SDE. Or am I missing something here? :?
B - What is Flashing? I did install the SDE at one point and did the Flash Kernel thing in recovery mode? Is that similar to Rooting?
P.S. My Comp's OS is Win 7 with Xubuntu Linux running on the other side. What I'm actually trying to do is install Ubuntu on my A5IT, but all the tutorials say something about Rooting, Rootshell, and RootAccess, so I'm really confused. All help will be greatly appreciated :-D!
Thanks!
Root will just allow You to access the internal memory of Your phone/tablet. So for example You can remove useless apps, modify fonts, make changes. Also most of the developer apps require root. For example Titanium Backup won't work 100% without root. Flashing doesn't mean rooting.
