Dear all members,
I notice that I can only add group in phonebook or assign contact in phonebook over Gmail account on the internet and there is no way we can do that in the X10?
Am I right?
This isn't totally the answer but an alternative...
Try an app from the market if available to you... MeContacts let you set up groups by giving you a screen of tiles, 3 by 5, 4 by 5, and 5 by 5 (I think) then you assign a tile to each contact. You name each screen as you want ie family, friends, work. The only thing the main phone book let you do was star your favorites so basically one group only.
After updating to 2.1. Contact grouU or Gangbook got no chance. Any alternative?

Already been solved. I try to delete all contacts and a little bit modify the setting. Don't forget to clear data in menu application-manage app-phonebook-clear data. And restore from phone book menu. Not backup and restore menu. Then, install gangbook. And voila. It is done.

Another APP that is missing in the EVO 3D is the HTC Battery Widget.
I got this one but it looks some sort of tiny, if anyone can post another that look the same size as the other apps, that will be great.

1.2mb and every permission known to man for battery widget? No thanks.

I really miss the battery widget, but Wow.. what's with all the permissions?
I really don't know about all those permissions, I installed and is working fine.
And also it looks kind of tiny, so if anybody finds another apk, will be q better option

Increased resolution could make it tinier. But still, all these permissions are unnecessary and I refuse to install this. Was this ripped from another HTC phone, or you found it online?

That's a good idea. Although it might possibly be the battery widget, I still feel uncomfortable giving a widget all those permissions as well. Who know's what could be lurking in the background of this widget, LoL
Anybody have a good battery widget that doesn't kill the battery? Everyone I looked at had negative comments about battery life. I though someone might have one that works really well.
Ok guys I found it... But permission are the same(I think)...
The long story is... I installed like 20 HTC Battery Widgets, and I found out that the first I posted here is from HTC Hero and that is why is so tiny, I installed some others and didn't work out, but in the end I found it.
Anyway here is the full resolution APK.

NO WAY!
look at everything it requires.
Your Personal Information- add or modify calendar events and send email to guests, Read browser's history and bookmarks, read calendar events, read contact data, write browser's history and bookmarks, write contact data.
Services that cost you money- directly call phone numbers, send SMS messages
Your Messages-com.android.email.permission.READ_ATTACHMENT, edit SMS or MMS, read SMS or MMS, receive MMS, receive SMS
Your Accounts-Google, mail, manage the accounts list, use the authentication credentials of an account
System Tools-Bluetooth, admiistration, change network connectivity, change Wi-Fi state, change WiMAX state, modify global system settings, prevent phone from sleeping, retrieve running applications, set time zone, write Access Point Name settingsm write sync settings.
these aren't all of them either, these are just the ones that concern me a little more.

Beautiful Widgets here, best $2.99 I've spent in a while.

My screenshot with the Widget...
Try Battery Minder, lots of options, widget or even taskbar options. Puts itself on the left of the taskbar so can be seen on ANY page, never found running or stuck in background and I've been using it for years at this point when I'm waiting on root for the battery circle hacks.
Free app and a pro app, but free app works very very awesome. Other than that running minimalistic text and making a cool "worded" battery widget works great too, not only that, you get lots of other options with minimalistic txt, clocks, weather, calenders, etc.
It's not a stand-alone battery widget, but I found and use ZDbox. Find it on the Market.
It has widgets for a bunch of different options(wifi, sound, brightness, bluetooth, etc.), a battery monitor, traffic counter, do not disturb, app lock, task killer, app to sd/app uninstaller.
It keeps a small battery(with percentage) at the top left of my EVO 3d. It's no battery widget but gets the job done for me(along with doing so much more).
im a fan of the simi clock widget that comes with a battery widget. Has weather widget thats not bad either.
I like it best with a clear background, under the settings for background, just put all the sliders to the left and it makes the background clear.
Works pretty well and is easy to read, not sure how much juice it uses though to run it...
I'm going to mod this widget a bit. I noticed that the name has a black border whereas the other widgets do not.

Battery indicator works pretty well, sits on the notification bar instead of being a big ugly widget on your screen. Free in the market.
I use the battery widget by Curve Fish, doesn't effect battery life, shows where things are at, and can even be color coded until we get a percent feature in a rooted rom.
I like circle battery widget. Found it in the market the other day. Doesn't seem to have any affect on battery life.
Hi All,
Before you say it, I know what I'm doing and understand how Google contacts work, I had a HTC HD2 (thanks Pongster and XDA!) and I am used to Android.
I know how Google contacts work, infact I submitted a bug fix to AweSync to fix up their syncing of Google Contacts with Lotus Notes.
Why does the Samsung Galaxy 1 (and 2!) show me _ALL CONTACTS_ when trying to SMS people? or when I try to save a newly dialled number into contacts, it shows all contacts?
I don't want to SMS an email address! I don't want to sift through 1,300 contacts yet this idiot phone is showing me them.

It's listing email Address's in the SMS TO: field - yet I've CLEARLY unticked "All contacts" and I've made it only show contacts with a phone number.
What is wrong with this thing?
EDIT: also, forgetting my ring tone every time I reboot isn't impressing me either.
Okay, I can't answer all your problems, and I do agree that the management of contacts on this phone is pretty poor, but there's obviously ways round certain issues.
One thing that will immediately help you is to use the contacts app to send SMS, rather than the SMS app. Select your contact (filtered as shown in your post) and you can swipe them left to SMS or right to call. That's a pretty handy feature.
However, if you're sending a message to more than 1 person you're back to square 1. I'd strongly recommend getting GO SMS Pro and GO Contacts (both free) from the Market. They're excellent replacements and I'm sure you'll be a LOT happier with them.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

It does what you describe above. I don't know what you expect it to do though. You dial a number, click "Add to contacts" or "New contact" to either list all your contacts or create a new one.
is there any solution to this, i quite like the messaging app, but find it quite annoying when i have to search through hundreds of contacts, or else exit out to the contact application to text some1 who's actually in my contacts list ....
Its not a deal breaker for me, i prefer the stock than go sms or handcent, or any alternative i've tried, so if there is no fix i'll grin and bear it but if there is please help out
.... its not that i prefer the stock to any other, its just that no other provides anything that makes me want to move from stock, and since both will be running anyways it seems pointless to be wasting battery .... also i found double contacts problems with other apps aswell

It's just poor design by Samsung.

Why? I think it is a good idea, since I very often MMS to email addresses! It is very handy to automatically downsize an image to MMS size when you are sending it to a person who you know will be looking at the email on their phone (e.g. my friend in Japan doesn't have MMS at all, over there nearly everything is email).
Been wondering about this too, i know the contact app you can customize what to show, which is fine, but the sms app show everyone you have been in contact with on google. Only "fix" i've found so far is to use another SMS app that can filter the contact list.
The solution is very simple. Just open display options in contacts and select only display contacts with numbers. Also untick everything that you don't want it to display. I don't save any numbers in phone or sim card so I save it to gmail account.
Even if I select only gmail it shows lots unnecessary contacts. So I went to gmail on my laptop and opened the contacts (phone book or something like that. Its been over a year so I don't remember)
I created a new category (u can choose an existing one) and transferred every single contact that I needed under it.
And thats it. Everytime I format my phone I just go to contact display settings on my phone and only choose the category that I made. And it only shows the contacts that I need.
It works also if u want to save a contact. I chose to save contacts to my gmail account when it asks. And everytime u save it saves it to the category that u choose.
I have been using this over a year and work flawlessly. I remember beig sick of choosing amongst 1000s of contacts.
I tried to explain as I could. If there is a problem ask me I will try to help.
Edit:
I realized this doesn't answer ur question about sms. This doesn't fix that SMS list behaviour.
I'm curious to know what instant messengers other people are using.
Currently I'm using trillian, and I like it, however I'd like the option to get a notification when certain contacts login (but not every contact). Is there any app that does this?
It would also be usefull if it supported multiple protocols, I'd rather not have multiple i.m. apps running at once.
tried IM+....only other multi client I know of with a decent gui...not sure about individual alerts based on contact
Should try talk.to. Amazingly simple UI and works really well.
https://market.android.com/details?id=to.talk
I forgot to mention, I need to use a messenger that works over data and not sms since I don't have a messaging plan. also I read this comment under the talk.to comments section "Changing the status of all my accounts to a Talk.to promotion without asking is completely unacceptable, and a shame because the app works great."
