OtterBox Commuter Hands On - HTC EVO 3D

I figured I would post up some pics and info about the case for anyone that's interested.
Pics first, which also fuctions as a camera test. All pics taken by an Evo 3D(yes, I got two of them today) with default settings.

I was a fan of the commuter case on my old Evo, and I knew I wanted to get one for the 3d right away. I had pre ordered one from an online vendor, but was delighted when Sprint had them in stock today, and surprised that nobody managed to share this info before hand.
The case is obviously high quality, as all OtterBox's usually are. The texture is different then the previous Evo's version. The upper half is mostly smooth, with only a hint of grip. The bottom, in contrast, is highly textured with a diamond plate like pattern that feels very nice while holding. It gives you a confident feeling while holding the phone with, something the previous version lacked.
The camera button is covered by the rubber skin, as are all the buttons, but it doesn't hinder the button feel at all. I actually think it makes it a little better. The volume and power buttons are also easy to use, and may even be improved with the case on, they are a bit squishy feeling on their own. The 2d/3d toggle is left uncovered, and is a little hard to operate with the case on. If you don't have any finger nails, it may be very difficult.
As always, a screen protector is included, and I think that they are the best in the business at this. Excellent scratch protection without loss of responsiveness or increase in friction.
As far as protection goes, I'd say it's medium duty at best. Much better than a TPU case, but not even close to the Ballistics HC or Defender. The vulnerable points will certainly be the wide open camera lenses and the exposed front speaker grill/ffc. Though I'm not sure what the alternatives would be here. Adding a layer over the camera and you're asking for trouble. Make it thicker, and you've lost your form factor and might as well have a Defender. I do wish they had molded something around the speaker grill and ffc though.
Overall, I'm very happy with the case, for now. I may have to step up to the Ballistics case if I want more protection later. I'm not a fan of the Defender at all. I had one on my old Evo for a month and it was all but useless at that point. The retention method for the rubber cover is just ridiculously lame and would come undone while in my pocket every time.

Thanks for the info...hopefully my sprint store will have some tomorrow.
...is it Friday yet?

Good post, food for thought. I bought 2 defenders to hold me over until Ballistic or Trident put something out. But you have given me pause, I may exchange the defenders for the commuter...it does seem like the defender skin will peel off easily in my pocket...

It's actually the pulling out of the pocket that peeled the skin, it was extremely annoying. Plus crude gets in the lip and the rubber cover is to sticky. I like the smoothness if the Commuter cover.

Just went and bought a Commuter for my E3D. I had used a Defender on my OG Evo for about an hour and then I took it off. The way that case is designed is horrible.
Commuter is the way to go until someone else comes out with a tougher case.

Review: Cimo Technologies Matte TPU Case

With a plethora of cases available for the new AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note the decision on which case to buy can be a tough one. This review takes a look at Cimo Technologies' Matte Finish TPU Case.

Packaging:
Cimo presents the case in a dazzle free fair. The case is delivered in a simple plastic wrapping with the all to familiar cardboard cutout of a Note sitting in it. I don't think extravagant packing is needed for a case, and in theory, the less they spend on the packaging, the less the consumer pays for the product.
Aesthetics and Construction:
The case is made up of two layers: a high gloss black 'upper' that surrounds the top portion of the case and circles the screen and a matte 'lower' that protects the lower half and back of the phone. The material feels durable and does provide some texture that the nude Note doesn't have. The case extends over the lip around the phone and extends a touch above the screen for protection. Installation is a breeze. The case fits well on the Note and has very little play- something hard cases often can't offer. The ports are accessible and the cutouts for the S-pen, speaker, camera, and flash are lined up well.
The one drawback is that like most other TPU cases there are 'tags' left on this case that are left from when the case was molded. These do protrude from the case more than what I would have liked, but can easily be removed with a blade.
Overall Function:
First and foremost a case is there to protect the phone, and with my experience so far I think this case will perform well. There looks to be a good balance between thickness and protection which is a plus since no one wants to add too much bulk to their phones. The raised edge allows those who don't have a screen protector to set the phone face down and have a little extra security that the screen will be unharmed.
Unfortunately, this case is still a little too thick on the bottom to allow successful function with the Samsung Desktop Dock. Although the phone will sit in the cradle, the USB plug cannot span the extra distance the case puts between it and the port.
Verdict:
I've used quite a bit of TPU cases on my devices in the past and generally the experience has been a mixed bag. Cimo's offering, on the other hand, seems like a well made worthy choice. It's minimal heft, good fit, solid protection, and fingerprint resistant matte finish makes a strong case to be your next purchase

I actually have been using a tpu case from them also, same look just glossy black. They are great fiting tpu cases. I have a friend buying one for his nexus now also. I would recommend them for sure.

Looks like the case covers half of the speaker on the back of the device judging by one of the pics you've posted here.

Yes, I noticed that pic looked funny. I was swapping a few cases at the time and must not have got the case on perfectly when that pic was shot. When installed right the speaker is not obscured (although the cut out is a touch oversized).
Thanks for pointing that out.

Have you stripped down your Note lately?

After having a see-through PTU case since day one, I rarely take the case off. Recently I have been using the Note with a digital amplifier to listen to music. Since the cutout on the case doesn't fit the 3.5 mm input, I have been taken the case off. I immediately noticed how sexy the Note is in it's complete naked state with the vivid capacitative button lit.
I suggest you do the same to yours if you are not already. Just not in public .
Mine has been in its birthday suit since its initial unboxing. It definitely is a nice looking phone. Although the materials are primarily plastic, it still feels premium. No creaking on this guy.

Sexy profile is why I'm also keeping mine nude but the phone is way too big to avoid some kind of bumping especially when I'm in my car.
I dropped my note couple of times already but I've been very lucky so far...
It really hurts my feeling when what I mentioned above happens... It worries me every time.
I've grown very attached to this phone. I think im at least getting a bumper case. The phone won't look so sexy with a cracked screen or bruised corners.

I know it aint cheap but for about $50, the otterbox defender case is the best *insurance* and piece of mind, money can buy imo.

Thread Cleaned
I know its just a bit of fun, but it could offend someone. Lets keep it clean now people
this is why i use a slim SLIM case on my note, doesnt really add anything or take anything away from it and all ports are super accessible.
Looking for a great slim case
I know the Otter Box Defender offers ultimate protection on the go but it's also hideously ugly and makes the device untenable for pocket use. I have no intentions of carrying it on my hip so I need something slim that offers some protection without detracting significantly from the beauty of the device. Has anyone tried different cases and found one that they love that sort of fit the aforementioned criteria?
BTW, currently I have a black Trident case on it which adds some bulk and size. It's still pocketable but it covers up the entire phone with a raised border around the screen for some protection. All that black is covering up my beautiful white though (except for the face). I'll be taking it back but I don't want to go unprotected. Ummmm...well, you know what I mean.

Warning for all the minimalist case owners out there!

I've been a minimalist case user for years, I think going back to the samsung galaxy s3. I am very OCD with my phones and treat it like a baby. So I always go with a minimalist case because I don't like the bulk.
on the s7 i actually tried a dbrand (carbon) because the phone looks so good I didn't want to hide it, unfortunately this didn't help make the phone any less slippery. It may have actually made it more slippery because the glass actually gives friction and the aluminum sides aren't covered with the skin so VERY slippery.
So anyway i went with the spigen Thin Fit case. This is similar to the cases I usually have used over the years.
Yesterday as I was sitting down, the phone took a slight (1 foot) slip/fall and sort of skidded. I honestly don't remember if it landed on the face or back but after i picked it up i immediately saw the screen was ok, and the dbrand skin is still on the back (so honestly don't know if it's cracked). but it did take a pretty decent nick out of the aluminum on the lower right corner. If you look close you can see the case was actually damaged a little too.
I think the case is great for what it is. Honestly if it would have covered the entire bottom (which would make it more comfortable in the hand) then it would have protected the phone in this slight drop.
Just wanted to let you guys know, that we can all drop phones, and you may want to make sure all edges are covered because TBH i can't believe the phone was damaged this bad from such a slight fall.
I am ordering something that covers all edges to prevent further incidents like this (and to cover this so I can stop looking at it every 5 mins )

I took an emry board (finger nail file) and smoothed it up a little.

try the neo hybrid. I love it. spigen stuff is great. they were on sale last week so I got a tough armor and neo and love the neo. love the rugged armor TPU and I've got a slim fit that's great too. I've pretty much got all their stuff lol

Looks like it just happened to land perfectly on that corner. I too wish they had gone all the way around with the case but I know what I'm getting myself into by running this case.
I switched away from Spigen's Thin Fit awhile back when I found out that Ringke makes a very similar case (might even be thinner), but covers all the sides. It's slightly harder to take the case off, but not impossible. You might want to check it out. Ringke Snug-Fit on Amazon.
hmm i have this case and thinking about getting something that covers the whole frame now...ill most likely get the cali case once they ship to canada...
Go with tech21, they are thin and provide excellent drop protection, I've dropped mine on concrete several times and nothing has happened.

Review: SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle Series Premium Hybrid Protective Frost Clear Case

Let me introduce to you my absolute favorite case, not just for the S8, but for many Smartphones that I have owned over the years. Long before I became a fan of these cases I was in love with the (UAG) Urban Armor Gear cases, that was until they didn't support a new smartphone that I had purchased. Like many of you I went out seeking a case that I liked, often buying a dozen cases or more since they were relatively cheap and easy to return thanks to Amazon, but once I found this gem I knew my search was over.
Supcase is now the first brand I go to for a case whenever I get a new smartphone and I was devastated when they didn't make one for my HTC 10 so I was forced to pay more for a similar product, Incipio's Octane case. The main reasons for me choosing this case over other similar cases are the look and feel, but the price is very nice as well. Compared to other similar cases I find the grip to be perfect and it doesn't grip to your pocket either. It seemingly adds no bulk (probably the thickness of a nickel on both sides and back) and it literally kept me from taking my S8 back and exchanging it for the S8+ due to it feeling too skinny in my hand. With this case on it has a very ergonomic feel and fits perfect!
The buttons are not any more or less responsive than a naked S8 and are easily found... and so is the horrible Bixby button unfortunately lol. This is a hybrid-type case with the edges around the case consisting of a very durable shock-absorbing TPU that is molded to a hard polycarbonate backing. Drop protection is excellent and exceeds military shock standards which comes at no surprise. It has raised edges to protect your screen when placed on a flat surface and the cutouts are sizeable enough to fit any plug you may have.
Overall it's a very good case.
http://a.co/5ldVaTJ (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XHFP7P3)
EDIT: Just to clarify on the thickness because some people say it 'looks' bulky... It only adds roughly 2mm of thickness to the sides. Of course the corners are roughly 4mm, but that's where you want more protection anyway. This is FAR from a bulky case IMO. For those in the states, like myself, 2mm is almost halfway between 1/8th and 1/16 of an inch.

It's not bulky at all. Don't knock it til you try it. As I said in my review it only adds about the thickness of a nickel to the sides. It's only $12.99 on Amazon.
EDIT: I just measured the thickness and it's halfway between 1/8th and 1/16th of an inch or approximately 2mm of thickness that is added to the sides.
This is always what I start with as my go to case also. It may not look the best but the in hand feel and grip is perfect. Wish they had a clear back version.

They do, but the style is different I personally don't mind the frosted back and it's not a fingerprint magnet like the clear cases which would arguably look worse lol. It also does a great job covering up any scuffs and scratches that happen over time... something the clear ones simply can't do.

I have had this case for two weeks now.
Pros
- Great build. Feels like a quality case which is expected from Spigen.
- Does not add too much bulk. I also have a Spigen Liquid Air case and the difference is not too drastic.
- Good lip on the front for protection. You can lay the phone face down w/o worries.
- Kick stand is decent. A little flimsy, but it holds.
- Alert slider cutout is great. I don't have to dig into it to move it. Operates like normal.
Cons
- Adds bulk. If you are looking for a slim case, this isn't it.
- One color choice. Gunmetal is the only option right now. It looks nice, but I've always gotten the black on black series. I emailed Spigen about it and was told at the moment they don't plan on releasing more color options.
- Buttons are flush without deep groves on indicators. Just like the Supcase many times I don't know which volume button I am pressing until I press it.
- Back plastic will get a lot of micro scratches. Only way to combat that is to either lay it on soft surfaces or place it face down. I've had this series before and Black hides scratches pretty well. They show up on Gunmetal.
Thanks for the review. I've been using it for about a month now and for me it's a bit too bulky TBH. I will still use it every now and then when I need a proper protection but it's really not too comfortable to hold when typing for example. It kinda cuts into your small finger on the bottom of the phone because the TPU case has an aggressive edge where your small finger is holding.
Other than that a decent case which offers great protection. You can even place a.piece of metal between the plastic and TPU back to use it on a magnetic car mount for example. Doesn't have the best grip there because it's kinda heavy but usually gets the job done.
Did anyone test it with Official OP 6T tempered glass?

Oh yes I completely forgot to mention that. I do find that holding the phone and typing for 5 minutes causes my pinky finger to become sore.

I have. Didn't work for me. Ended up replacing the official OP6T TG with an IQ Shield.
