[Q] Bad boot blocks / format - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to revive my driod eris that I long forgot about.
Last I remember is that it had some bad boot blocks and I couldn't get a kernel img to fit into the good space that was left behind.
I was wondering if there was a way to format like you can do with the fascinate and odin?
Is there some way to get a kernel img into this or a way to remap the good and the bad?
thanks

I can only point you to the following threads and posts by bftb0:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968216
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824290

I think what you are looking for is the ErisMTDNuke.zip that bftb0 created in and for the above threads. Please read and digest all of the warnings and instructions very carefully to maximize the chance of recovering your Eris. You can't get any better information than that posted by bftb0, so just heed all of his cautions and instructions.
Good luck and let us know if you get it working!
Cheers!

Thanks for the info, it sure looks like a more sensable place to start other than google. As soon as I locate the data cable I will work on getting this thing working again.

In one of the threads I found this,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11651122&postcount=21
It fixes the MTD partition table.
After that I flashed a ROM to test and it booted right quick.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

You are most welcome! And you are clearly technical and savvy-enough to follow all of the crazy stuff that bftb0 puts out there, LOL (hope you threw a couple of thanks his way since he's "the man", eh?).
I didn't want to send you there directly since, as I'm sure you've read, there are a lot of other little things to try and do and/or check before resorting to the MDTNuke tool.
Cheers!

Well I did toss a few thanks about. I have been out of the Eris game for some time now but since it already wasn't working I figured that I couldn't make it work any less.
Learned a ton when I got my fascinate. Comparatively the fascinate is better though there isn't a whole lot as far as development goes at the moment.

Clockwork let's you format from recovery but doesn't fix a broken partition table. So, in short, Clockwork doesn't let you repartition the device.

I don't know how to flash and what to flash: too much information

Hello everyone. I'm very sorry for the question, but I really have read lots of topics about Odin, KIES, Voodoo, Lag-fix, latest Nandroid Backup and everything and it's impossible to arrange such a large amount of info.
I received my Vibrant from the US and now I have it (unlocked - accepts any SIM card), but unrooted, with the 2.1 Eclair on it. It has everything set to defaults.
I really want to have it running Froyo. I'm an experienced user that comes from the HTC Polaris scene, but you know, each model is a whole world. I didn't ever had a Samsung Smartphone, so I'm not familiarized with the tools, methods, SPLs...
Please, guide me to the right way. I tried to follow some tutorials, but the appear to be outdated nowadays.
Thanks a lot for the ones that are reading this. I will try to be useful as soon as I get this working.
Open browser type google.com then ask away. Wrong section by the way.

You can learn absolutely anything about this phone from these forums. I am living proof of that. Some info is outdated, but for the most part everything will still work.
Just start reading. Anything you want to do has already been posted on here, I guarantee it.

Yea this is wrong section for sure, you want Q and A, but instead of being a jackass like the guy above ill answer what I can. Odin is used for flashing roms or returning your phone back to its pretty stock rooted self, KIES is just some program samsung has to manage your phone and your internal and external cards on it, Voodoo seems to be fading away in light of the new OCLF one click lag fix.
A good rom to start on is something bionix, fusion does not have the samsung touchwiz and final does. You will want to download ROMmanager from market, use it to install clockwork, copy your rom to your internal sd card, then using rom manager pick the reboot option, you will be taken to the default recovery the first time, using the volume button go down and select reinstall packages and it will take you to clockwork, navigate through it to find the rom you copied to your sd card, flash away. Once you are done with that the roms posts have steps to set up the one click lag fix which will make your phone fly like a damn hellbat compared to samsung bottlenecked factory one.
As far as froyo goes, just be patient is my motto, the ones that they have finally have gps working but still have some issues that are not quite ironed out, hopefully we should be seeing a real asop froyo by the end of this month, if you just want it for the flash you can find flash for 2.1 scattered around the interwebs. Good luck have fun, dont brick.

Yes this is the wrong section AND WE ALL GET IT. Enough said, there shouldn't be more people saying this lol..
The froyos have GPS and everything now.
Seriously though
1.) Root your phone. There are a few good ways to do this, I recommend THIS way.
2.) Install "Rom Manager" from the market. Once installed, click the first button at the top and select Vibrant. (When it asks for permission, allow it.)
3.) Select your ROM of choice.
Eugene373's Froyo (Macnut)
My Axura Froyo (I am going to include all the fixes later this week, right now it is not recommended.)
TeamWhiskeys Obsidian Froyo
AnderDroid's AOSPish Froyo
4.) Download the ROM and put it on your internal card. (Don't rename or anything, leave it in it's .zip file)
5.) Go into Rom Manager, Select install ROM, select the .zip that you downloaded.
6.) It will install, and you will have a fully running amazingly custom ROM! < That didn't come out right

OK! I have an application titled "OCLF". With it, I installed the ext2 tools, but the "lag fixes" are all unavailable because and the reason it says is that "I might have it enabled already" since /system/bin/playlogos1 is less than 5 KB. Does the Bionix 1.2 build have the lag fix included? :S I didn't applied any fix after flashing it.
Thanks in advance!

Please can someone with more knowledge help answer superjmn's last question on the issue of lagfix? I am really interested in this thread as I will be flashing my phone too same way this weekend and I've been looking for a thread like this where one is taken step by step through how to flash. Superjmn, this your thread is serving more people than you know. Thanks for taking the lead in asking. Once you able to do it, I'm sure I will be able to do it too successfully. My vibrant is presently running the ji6 update and unrooted. Waiting to read more here. Thanks

Hi belishi7! I have managed to install the lag fix using OCLF (from the Market).
Install ext2 tools
Restore Boot Animation
Apply OneClickLagFix V2.2+ (it takes more than 2 minutes)
Done! I will reboot and it's all running
CAUTION: I did this without any other fix (I've heard something about a Voodoo kernel, but I kept away from it...).

[Q] Read until my eyes hurt....I'm sorry i have to ask....

This is my very first smartphone as I have been to poor to get one before now. I have Att SGS2. From what i have read i have made a bad decision when doing the factory upgrade to uckk6.
The thing is I want to root the phone, put on custom mods....but I am having a hard time grasping it. I don't want to mess anything up and I dont want to lose my photos and such that are on the phone.
I dont know where to even start.....backup program? or? what all programs or apps i need?
before I upgraded, i downloaded a super1click program and it said it was rooted...then i tried to use the phone and there was soooo much lag in the response time..... i hit the unroot button and tried to use the phone and same thing...restarted phone and it was fine. While it was rooted tho, the damn superuser part asked for money before i could even do anything, that was second reason for unroot and of course thinking i may mess up my phone.
I have tried asking all my friends and to no avail have succeeded in finding anyone that has rooted a phone and/or flashed custom roms.
Like I said in the title, i have been to many different sites even trying to read up and I would rather be safe than sorry. If someone could plz help me out here I would be very grateful.
I am hoping I don't get spazzed at like i seen in a few other posts of other ppl.
And i have seen where someone sent ppl to:
[Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCKH7/KK6 Return/Unbrick to Stock (or Root
but that doesnt get my foothold on where to start at.
Please don't write me off as a lost cause because I would like to enjoy the benefits of having a rooted phone and custom roms as the rest of you that are intelligent enough to do so. At one point I'm sure you were where i am. I am very eager to learn and can't wait!
While I was writing this i downloaded the Uckk6_stock_rooted.tar.7z not sure if i need it or what though.
Thanks
Follow this guide TO A TEE, and you shouldn't have any problems. It also won't trigger the flash counter so you can take it back for repairs and Samsung won't know you've done anything to it. Use (2C) Entropy's version using windows to root as the others won't work with the OTA update. If you have a MAC, use 2D. Folow the directions EXACTLY how their written. This will get you rooted. Drop down to 3B and again, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY HOW THEIR WRITTEN. After this is done, you have a Entropy's kernel with CWM. You can then download any COMPATIBLE rom to your internal SD card and flash the rom with CWM.
To save your pics and such, just hook your phone to your puter via the USB cord and copy/paste, or drag and drop to a file on your computer.

I just don't understand why people who can't comprehend the process of rooting or flashing even try. It's not like this phone sucks stock that they just have to mod it to make it workable. None of this is rocket science, but if you don't understand it beforehand then JUST LEAVE YOUR PHONE ALONE! It will be 100 times harder to fix it if you don't know how you messed it up in the first place. It really isn't fair to expect people in here to bail you out when things go wrong because you didn't know what you were doing. The warnings aren't there to keep you from the good stuff. They're there so that you'll think before doing and only do once you understand.

I've read everything in your thread so far and it sounds like everything is fixed. If wifi works and you have root, cwm, and superuser you should be good to go. Go install roms and enjoy. Really doubt your wifi is going anywhere. I'm far from a programmer or anything like that, and from my experience, if you follow the instructions it's hard to **** this phone up beyond repair firmware wise so freaking out is pointless.

I bought the phone, rooted it and flashed a custom rom all yesterday. I was on KK6 2.3.6. Here is EXACTLY what I did:
Get Odin 1.7 from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832827
Get Samsung Kies from here (only way my computer would pick up the phone):
http://mirror10.downloadandroidrom.com/download/Samsung/Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe?token=512181517
Follow 2c from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Then Step 3A in the same thread.
My phone restarted and I was rooted. My WiFi didn't work. Wiped all data in Clockwork Mod Recovery and I was all set. Then I unlocked my phone (this is optional). Then I flashed a ROM. Easy.
Seems like you're all set if I you did something close to that^
I used ICScrewD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375255)
Another popular option is UnNamed (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474)

Hi everyone/yeah i screwed up

Well crappy first post but yeah. Ive always read stuff around here but never wanted to actually contribute because i honestly dont know much. But yeah I decided do install a rom and halfway through it just turns off . I thought I backed up but i didnt. The samsung logo will come up then turn off. I can get it into cwm-based recovery. But thats pretty much it. I coulnt find anything about it only booting to samsung then shutting down.. so im asking for someone to point me into the right direction.
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks, I was actually going through all of that. It just seems like an overwhelming amount of information for me to understand. I will keep on reading of course. Am I really in that bad of a situation?
Nah 90% of all errors are recoverable. Do you use an sdcard to put your roms on? if so just download a new rom to it via computer and then flash through CWM if not then Id ODIN back to stock then go through it again. Like Mejori said just take it slow, one step at a time.
trust me ..alot of us get overwhelmed when reading all this stuff..i am no expert, and i usually find that when i mess something up on my phone it is do to a mistake i made by going to fast or from frustration .. sometimes it helps if you put everything on pause ..go to the bathroom and clear your thought and start all over!!!:laugh::laugh:

[Q] Phone bricked i believe

Hello, i've been using these forums in particular the Samsung Galaxy S2 thread "
[Rom] AOKP(Jellybean 4.1.2) | Task650 & Ktoonsez (11/9)" for awhile now, probably going on a year. Just today i tried updating to the aforementioned update in that thread from 11/9, and while installing the ROM segment, i got an Error, and said installation aborted, tried once more, same thing, upon trying to reboot my phone it is now stuck in an endless reboot loop, which is why i believe it is bricked. I have found sites that tell me to get back to the stock rom, since i believe that is my only option now, but first and foremost id like to know how to manually get into recovery mode.
Other sites have said holding down Home Volume Up and Power simultaneously will do this, i've tried multiple times, hasn't worked, so unless there's something i'm missing there i'd love to know if there is some other way. Also if there is anything i can do besides simply going back to stock ROM which is a long and drawn out process Id love to know.
Thank you for ANY and all answers in advance.
First off, make sure you have the i777. I know you said you've been using Tasks' AOKP rom, but forgive us for not trusting you yet. Too many people are trying to flash roms that aren't built for their model.
Secondly, recovery mode is volume up AND down, while holding the power for the i777. Hold all three until you get into recovery.
Also, what sort of error did you get? If you can get into recovery your phone isn't bricked.

I've been flashing form this thread for nearly a year as i mentioned so i definitely have the right model, i'm not sure what type of error it was, all i know it it said something like E:/Error cancellation aborted.
Ok in the midst of posting this i finally got into recovery thank you, and i tried reinstalling again. it says "Installing Update...
Symlink: some symlinks failed
E:Error in /emmc/aokp_JB_I777-ota-eng.task650.ktoonsez-11.9.2012.zip
(Status 7)
Which i know is a common issue in the FAQ. but the only suggestion is to install some other ROM< which i cannot do b/c i cannot get the phone past boot screen, so i believe i'll be using a guide i found on cnet to go back to stock rom.

I have no problem doing that as long as their some guide on this site to go back to stock rom for me. This guide requires me to go to download mode, which i'm assuming is a different button combination than Recovery?
Id like to know that if thats known.

I'm thinking if i can get into download mode, i can follow the steps that the thread i've been following far give you for status 7 errors, and get my back up and running how it was.
Just need to know how lol.
First thing is IF you need to go back to stock find creepycrawly's return to stock thread. I would HIGHLY SUGGEST TO ONLY USE GUIDES FROM THIS FORUM.
Now onto your issue I personally would get a remove able sdcard, download the aokp zip again and double check the md5. My bet is you just got a bad download. Place the new aokp on the external sdcard, reboot back into recovery and choose to install from sdcard (NOT from internal sdcard since you cannot boot up). Then flash the new aokp.
Another thought is did you make a nandroid backup? You should be able to get into recovery and restore from internal sdcard if you made a nandroid. This will get you back to where you were originally. Then redownload the aokp and check that the md5 matches EXACTLY. Then flash the newer aokp. You are not bricked at this point. Follow up here after you try my suggestions and let us know how it went.

Covered thousands of times in this forum.
Volume up and down plus power gets to recovery
Volume up and down plus plug in USB gets you to download. These should be the first things anyone knows before Modding their phone.

I was referred to this thread nearly a year ago by a friend, and i've had no issues so far, so i kind of arrogantly didn't look too far into things like that, which now i'm obviously regretful of. I've gotten into Download mode, am i right in assuming that download mode only accesses stuff on the external SD< b/c i cannot access my internal drive when entering it, which would make my previous theory about being able to follow the standard Status 7 recovery tutorial if i could get into download mode, wrong.
Sadly to respond to the other poster, no again, with the same about not knowing how to get into download mode, i never made a nandroid, mainly because almost everything on my phone is disposable, i don't take pictures really at all, and all my numbers/contacts are synced up to GMAIL, i guess i never thought of a situation arising like this where that didn't matter, i simply wanted to use my phone lol.
Back to a previous comment you said that i now realize i answered too hastily, about if i have the I777, when my phone boots up it says I9100, but what's weird, and i said it before i was referred here by a good friend of mine who knows my phone, and is a much more experienced rooter than i am, so i guess i just took their word for it, and as i said i've flashed ROM's on this phone for nearly a year now, and it's been seamless, not a single problem up until this point, so im wondering if the i777 vs i9100 conflict caused anything.
[EDIT:] Disregard the following comments... I don't believe they will help.

I want to thank everyone on this thread for their patience, and their answers, i actually used a guide from another site because it had gotten really good feedback, the only problem is it does not have the I777 official firmware, but rather the i9100, for the international version of the phone so my back key does not work, i am currently looking for the correct version, on this thread, and across the internet if anyone can find the official firmware let me know, thanks in advance, and again thanks everyone who answered in the past, your patience and answers were greatly appreciated.

Forums have these things called stickies. Within these stickies are tidbits of information .. typically these tidbits are important enough to warrant the sticky status and as such should be read carefully. All the info you seek is contained within these stickies

Just get into recovery mode and do the three wipes to fix the bootloop. If it doesn't, DOWNLOAD and FLASH others rom from the original development thread and then install the latest aokp from task to prevent the error status 7. otherwise, please edit the build.prop

For one you could have easily found the sticky threads with the i777 stock firmware. Second now that you flashed a i9100 I HOPE it didn't contain the boot loaders for the i9100. But I guess you will find out at some point I'm sure.
Like I said EVERYTHING you need CAN and ONLY should be found HERE on xda developers. Anything else is a crap shoot. Maybe you will get lucky and maybe not.
now that you flashed the i9100 firmware you will have to actually READ FURTHER than you did before to see HOW to fix your button issue. It can be easy if you know what your doing or can be hard if you don't. Good luck. I'm out...

Reboot to Download Mode from Stock Recovery?

Anyone know if there is a way to reboot directly to Download Mode from inside Stock Recovery? The only option I see "reboot system".
Anyone?
Thanks

While I understand that everybody has to start somewhere, you really need to do some research first. If the first question is how to get into download mode from inside a stock recovery then you will soon end up with a paperweight. Im not answering your question because I'm an a$$, I'm not answering to save you the headache of having to deal with getting a replacement device.

If you don't know the answer to my question, please, don't bother to respond. I searched extensively before posting my question, as I always do. If you actually read ANY of the responses in the google search that you so kindly posted, you would see that NONE of them answer my question. This is exactly why I posted the question here, thinking someone might be willing to help. I was obviously quite mistaken.

You guys really are something.
First of all, I have researched extensively. To suggest that I haven't is a gross error on your part, not to mention that your entire response is obscenely condescending and presumptuous. As a rule I only post here after I have made a significant effort to find the answer I am looking for on my own. I know exactly what I want to do and why. Furthermore, I am 100% responsible for my own actions. I really don't need you to save me from myself.
The ability to boot directly into Download Mode from recovery without booting the OS has many benefits, which is exactly why many custom recoveries have this feature built in. I would simply like to know if there is a way to do this with the stock recovery. If there is, great. Let me know. If there isn't, fine. If you don't know, either say so or don't answer at all. If you would like to alert me to the potential risks, thank you, that would be very nice of you. Nevertheless, responses like the one you gave are absolutely uncalled for.
I would direct you to the response I gave to Q-Ball. Neither of your responses add any value to this forum.
Our response was justified.
The answer you need is available in the stickied threads.
But... I will save you time. The simple answer is I don't think you can boot to download mode while in stock recovery. Just pull the battery, reinsert the battery, hold down volume + home + power. Once you see the Samsung logo release the power button while maintaining hold on vol down + home.
The bottom line is you must have really jacked up your device or you're attempting to recover from a soft brick. There's not much reason for using download mode with stock recovery... Unless you're in the process of rooting in which case thee thread you should be following will have detailed instructions laid out for you to follow.

I'm just going to make a guess here but the op more than likely has the corrupt data partition problem which there is a sticky for in the general section. The instructions just say to odin a recovery after you use stock recovery to wipe with which is probably why he is asking if there is a way to reboot directly to download mode from stock recovery. Now like I said I am just guessing here.

Bingo! Give that man a cigar! :good: Are you psychic?
That is exactly what I am dealing with. I was hoping there was a direct way to reboot to Download Mode from Stock Recovery to avoid booting the OS and without having to pull the battery.
Apparently there isn't a way. Thanks for the info

Sad that we had to get a psychic here in order to find out the issues you were having. If we had more info from the beginning, nobody would have been "assuming" anything
