Does anyone know of an app that can speak the name of the caller that actually works on the atrix?
I have tried "voice caller id" but it doesn't work.
That option is built into the Atrix!!
Settings> Call> Caller ID readout.
I like Grace from SVOX, I dumped Pico for her.
Oops. Just tested and it works. But why does it speak the name of the contact in both spanish and english? I would like spanish only and to customize the prefix that gets spoken before the contact

Uhm, mine only speaks English. I would turn my phone off if it spoke Spanish to me. Sorry I cant help you there.
Maybe it's because i have morelocale 2 installed and customized my locale to English (Venezuela) (en_VE). I did this because on english the dialer stores numbers as xxx-xxx-xxxx while on my country numbers are xxxx-xxx-xxxx
Settings>voice input & output>text-to-speech settings
Have you you played with those settings to try and make it work?
yup, it's funny to hear "incoming call from xxxx" in a spanish robotic voice and then hearing the same in the english robotic voice.
i will try removing my custom locale. it's too bad you can't configure anything regarding the readout.
on voice caller id, you can configure the prefix (the "incoming call from" text), also you can configure the "unknown caller" message, the volume, position and repeats of the speech, also if it should respect silent mode or not and a bunch of other stuff. sad it just doesn't work
I use an app called Call Announcer. It works for me. Not sure about the language issue though. I've only used english.

I am looking for an app that would enable me to dial contacts or do actions on my Android phone by voice. The standard Android voice recognition is unacceptable because I am not from an English speaking country.
My old phone had this feature where I could record a "voice command" for any of my contacts and only those would be considered when voice dialing. This also enabled for much more variance in speaking so I suppose it would be helpful for English speaking users too.
Is there any app that would provide this functionality? Or is somebody working on one?
I am in a similar situation, a number of my family have non-English names and Android cannot recognise them. I've looked everywhere and cannot find one either. Everyone seems to rely on voice recognition which is, frankly, crap for anything remotely non-standard in language.
You can use Voice Speed Dial by Cyberon Corp, it's very good
.
Moved to Q&A
it will be great if such an app exists.
let me now if you find one
is there a development/process/information about this thread?
To make the Android voice recognition work, go to Settings>Voice Input & Output>Language>English (US). You'll be able to use all the voice commands. I don't know how well voice dialing will work for you though. It works for me many times with Indian names, but also fails a lot. Try Vlingo too, it might work better.

Hey there.
I'm from Portugal and here we have some accentuated letters like "à á é ç ã õ".
When the system language is set to English and we insert one of these letters the SMS limit falls down from 160 charachters to 70 because it changes the encoding of the SMS .
What I would like to know is if it's possible to come with an hack to force the system to encode the SMS in a particular way so these kind of letters don't cut us 90 characters off the message please.
Actually this is a problem in a lot of countries. Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and the list goes on... Any country that speeks a latin language really.
So, can anyone help us out?
PS: I own a Samsung Galaxy S at the moment
Same problem here
Got a Magic 32A from Portuguese operator TMN
I'm running CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC3
What happens is that if i set Android in Portuguese language the SMS's work as expected.
If you change the language to English, when writing an SMS, if a character like "á" "é" is used you end having only 70 characters available.
My interest was to use Android in English but send SMS's with latin characters whithout having only 70 characters available per SMS.
In Windows Mobile 5/6 there was an option to disable unicode.
Any help? Thanks in advance
This problem also happens with CyanogenMod 5.0.8
anyone? please?
Samsung Galaxy has the problem solved.
I guess that they solved it by themselves. Neither Google nor HTC give a $hit about it. For instance, HTC still has this problem on all android devices.
I owned a Legend with Android 2.2, and the problem persisted. As it was still in warranty, I returned it to the store, got refunded, and bought a Samsung Galaxy
you should feel fortunate that at least you can send the unicoded characters here in the US, most carriers do not properly send unicoded characters, and instead they arrive as BLOCKS on the recipient phone. So imagine wanting to send an SMS with a foreign language that contains accents or unicoded characters when living in the US. You really can't.
To that end, it'd be nice if one of the SMS programs had an option to convert all Unicoded text messages to ASCII prior to sending. This way you can continue to use your foreign language keyboard and dictionaries with accents and unicoded characters and be confident that the message will not be corrupted when sent. And it'd allow a 160 character ASCII message as well.
this is native issue of the SMS, not the phone or OS issue
if you want to force encoding without Unicode, characters like à á é ç ã õ will convert to a a a c a o accordingly.
Still have the same issue. This is stupid really
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Anyone? I have the same problem in runnymede.
Samsung Galaxy 3 on Froyo has solved that...
EDITI've heard also about Samsung Galaxy Ace, both in Poland.)
Use Handcent SMS app
I had the same problem. I am a spanish native speaker, hence my SMS are sent in spanish. Due to autocorrection, some words automatically add the accent in some words. I had not found any solution to the native application for SMS, however I noticed that using "Hancent SMS" app, although the accents are added, the number of characters are still 160!
some temporary solution
Some letters are included in english character set, which you can use without the automatic change of the character set, so the sms will remain 160 chars, instead of 60 or something like that.
these characters are definitely included:
(à,ä,æ,å,é,è,ü,ú,ö,ò,ß,...)
You can try out when you start writing an sms, and turn on the "remaining characters counter" and try it for your self which characters you could use.
for example you can use "à" instead of "á" it still stays 160 chars.
The feature "Strip Unicode" for CM http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/19381 solves the problem. Well, not quite like in Nokia and many other phones (they let you write diacritics but strip them only after you click "send" – and they send pure GSM chars) but it changes every char right at the moment of input:
– if you type letter by letter: when you type the diacritic (e.g. "ć" or "Ü") it instantly changes into its GSM alternative ("c" or "U");
- if you use dictionary: you type in letters, dictionary shows you propositions but when you choose the proposition(word) (by tapping it or typing space) it inserts the word with Unicode chars changed into their GSM alternatives.
Does someone know if there is an app where it is possible to assign name read by user to a person in contact list, and then when you activate voice dial your pronaunciation is recognized and propper person is dialed? Not one voice dial app works with my language because pronauncitions are very different from english. Not to mention nicknames. Thanks!
Hi,
Everytime I say like "Add Reminder", it brings me to Google Search.
It is suppose to do like what Siri does, add a reminder for me. I have changed the default language to English (US) but still the same problem.
Thanks.
Hi!
So .. I'm having the following issue.. wich is bugging me quite a bit.
I recently started using Google Hangouts instead of SMS (TextMessaging), and I'm very fond of it.
The only issue I have is that the numbers I havent added any areacode to gets the areacode for Sweden (+46),
and this is ONLY on Google Hangouts.
When I go back to the regular SMS app, the areacode is removed, and I can again send SMS without sending it to Sweden first.
I'm from Norway if it matters (+47). But the phone itself is imported from Sweden, but I'm using Norwegian as language.
So I cannot understand why this should be an issue.
Anyone got any info on the matter?
Edit: And yes. I checked my gmail. I have my country set to Norway.
And I just doublechecked that it werent my Backup Pro that messed things up (since I know app+data backup\sms backup can sometimes be a bit wierd.),
because I checked with only the original google drive backup that comes with android, and I still got +46 as the area\countrycode when
texting a number without +XX infront of the number when using Google Hangouts.
I just find it very wierd. There is no reason for Google Hangouts to pick +46, right ?
Except the fact that the phone is imported from Sweden.
As another Norwegian, I have the exact same problem. The Hangouts app adds +46 as the country code to all my numbers without an already existing prefix (I even think it added +45 at one point, which is the prefix to Denmark).
I bought my phone (HTC One) from a Tele2 outlet in Norway. Tele2 is a Swedish mobile operator company, so quite possibly my phone is the Swedish version (I don't know how to verify that).
Also, my default country code in Gmail is set to Norway.
Could this be a bug?
Edit: Also, when I use the default SMS app from HTC, no problems occur (as with OP dmbardal). That is, the app doesn't prefix any area code.

I have Tele2 and I believe this to be some kind of "dial assist" making Hangouts believe that since tele2 uses Swedish simcarda, that I am trying to dial to my home network, and that I'm roaming abroad when I am indeed in Norway messaging a Norwegian number.
A are all of you also tele2-customers?

I have the exact same problem and yes I am a tele2-customer. I think what you're writing about Sweden could be the problem. Google probably didn't think of that scenario when they added this. A fix would be greatly appreciated! At least there should be a way to override the setting it gets from the sim.
This problem is extremely annoying!
I will write a bug report for google to ignore.

How did the bug report go? Tele2/Nexus 5 user here with the exact same problem. Sometimes it works to store the contact with the area code as well before sending an SMS.
I'm still having the same issue, despite desperately changing everything I can on Youtube, Google Plus, GMail, Hangouts etc.
Still no change.
I recently posted on the Google+ help group to see if anyone got a fix for the issue.
I will report back if I find anything.
This is seriously starting to bug me.

hey i've been living in Vietnam for the last year, and with new google voice integration I tried texting home and just noticed that it would at the VN country code to all my contacts. What I ended up doing was using twitch contact formatter to analyze all my contacts and resave them with the international standard. It did a pretty decent job in recognizing what was Vietnam and what was the US. It might work for you all. I did have to manually process some that got mistaken for VN when they were US numbers.
I was easily able to spot the mistakenly converted contacts by clicking on the VN flag and switching to national convention. This showed me all my "Vietnamese" contacts, and I could easily spot the difference in names. I just reedited those contacts to delete the country code and then processed them.
Hope this helps!
Danish Area Code with TDC
I have same problem. norwegian with TDC subscription. +45 on sms text when they are supposed to be +47. Have changed all the contacts but its annoying when I write new text to new people. Default at +45.
hangouts will automatically add +1 prefix when tring to send short code sms, for me I am attempting to get my data usage from straight talk sending usage to short code 611611, and hangouts will automatically add +1 making the number +1611611, I have figured out that if you delete all messages youve attempted to send in hangouts and your phones default messaging app, go to app manager on your phone, force stop your phones stock messaging app and hangouts app, make your messaging app the default messaging app, create a new contact in phone for the short code i addded the number as name: staright talk and phone number as 611611, send message using phones defsult messaging using the newwly created contact, close messaging app force close and clear cache in app manager on pphone, then make hangouts default messaging app open hangouts and it will retrieve the message from your messages in the default messaging app, and now it will show the number when you selct the message as 611611 the correct short code without adddign the +1, as long as you keep that message in your list and use that converation for any future message to that short code it will work just fine. please feel free to post any questions

I eventually found an easier workaround. In "Contacts", select the contact that has the designated short code to and click the Send Text flag on the right hand side. If Hangouts is your default SMS app, it will open up a Hangouts SMS window with the short code and NOTHING prefixed up front. i.e. it will work ok. Cheers.
