Hi everyone,
Coming from a Nexus 1 that I never felt the need to root, I have PLENTY OF QUESTIONS as listed below:
1. Instructions to ROOT: I can't find any proper video (googled it, youtubed it and everything was long and complicated).
>> Is there out here a single app or webpage or x that will provide a solution as simple and user friendly as "Slide to jailbreak" as it existed on the iPhone for a while?
2. Effects of root: Will rooting the phone prevent me from automatically getting firmware updates and so on?
>> If yes, Will I have to basically factory reset the phone everytimes an update arrive OR wait for a zip to appear here (and update the phone manually, etc.)
3. Root powers: Will root give me the abilty to use ALL the widgets from the stock launcher while using another launcher?
>> I switched to LauncherPro but the calendar and running apps widgets (which are cool). If root is not the solution for this, where can I obtain the apk of these widgets? (no pure calendar is not equivalent).
4. Music application lock screen widgets. Is there any way to port the stock lockscreen widget for music app to another application, namely player pro which is superior to the stock player imho
5. I heard of an app for rooted SGS2 that allows to play tegra2 configured game. is this working properly? Is it stable?
6. Gallery app keeps all the tumbnails, any other solution than .nomedia?
7. I want the option to record calls within the phone app, I hear it is possible, what is it that need to do to implement this?
8. is there a way to replace the stock battery indicator by %?
THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE FOR ALL YOUR WONDERFUL ANSWERS!!!

thank you
Thank you really, I really would not think of this...
If at least useful threads would not get burried here then there would be some useful base for new comers to get info
hmmm Actually, just watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA

Hi. The LG Optimus One form Koodo will be my first Android phone. I am upgrading from a Samsung Intensity. I am wondering what things I should do to it other then root it, install the milk_os thing to fix the touch screen, overclock it, and find a custom rom I like for it. Any app Suggestions? Or any rom suggestions.
Thanks
I suggest the app that has SuperOneClick forum, the rooms would not know friend.
I was just going to use z4root
I suggest you test the waters first. Just root it for now. Don't flash a custom recovery unless you feel the urge to do something more. It's much better than going straight into the world of custom ROMs and stuff
Optimus is my first Android phone too. I stuck with the stock rom and only rooted and flashed the overclock touchscreen fix kernel like it has been suggested to you. I wasnt up for custom roms since it was my first Android and I didnt know yet what I like and what not. I did some of the tweaks mentioned in the forum here like enable the jit compiler and hardware acceleration.
Apps that I installed and which i use:
Titanium backup --- Easy way to uninstall some of the bloatware apps and have backup just in case. I removed facebook, twitter, lg app advisor, lg notification, google feedback (com.google.android.feedback) and some which are in the german rom (studivz, xing).
Barcode scanner --- for all the QR codes and barcodes
Brightness level --- since optimus has no auto brightness that widget is a nice way to quickly change the brightness without digging in the settings menu
Skype --- no explanation needed i guess
root explorer and es file explorer --- for the exploration needs and sd card clean up on the run
K-9 mail --- email client for all your non google mail needs
netcounter --- to have an overview how much data was used ( i get throttled after a certain amount if you have real unlimited data it is useless)
SiMi Clock Widget ---- clock widget which also does weather and shows battery status in percentage
browsers --- I mostly use the Miren browser but do have Opera mini installed if reception is bad or i want to save bandwith and Skyfire if i desperately need to see a flash vid
I'm not in a position that i miss anything that i read about the custom roms.
I ended up getting this phone since it was the most feasible but on Telus. It's a great phone overall and i started out just rooting the phone since it was just one click using z4root. Later on I installed void's rom which was a great rom to go with.
Most people tend to stay with 2.2 for stability and also speed while 2.3.3 is for people that are really keen on using Gingerbread. Like said use nandroid & Titanium backup to test out different roms and just figure out what you like best.
Thanks everyone for the help. Can't wait to get it . Just wish it had flash support but one of my friends will help me try something. Its working on his ARMv6 cpu so ill let you all know if it works.
Hey guys
Ive just upgraded from to the Galaxy s2 (from an HTC desire) and first impressions are that i love it. I have a few q's that i hope some people can help me with:
1. On my home screen, i cant change/move the very bottom line of apps (phone/contacts/messaging/applications). Is there anyway to switch these out with something else (a different app)?
2. HTC has friend stream which is a full page widget showing all your facebook/twitter updates. The s2 has social hub, but is there anyway to show this in a full page widget?
3. Is it possible to assign an option to long press the (soft) back button? The menu button already brings up google search, and quite simply i want long press back to bring up voice search
4. The interal storage (12gb or something like that) current shows as USB storage, which prevents me from moving apps across to it. Any way to rectify this?
5. I have already rooted my phone. Will i still be able to take OTA updates without any problem? (something you couldnt do on a rooted HTC)
6. Any way to stop the default internet browser from opening websites in mobile view? Ive seen a workaround which only lasts the session, but just wondering if theres a permanent one (dont want to use opera as it doesnt have flash working/working well yet).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

I'll try my best, here goes..
1. Open the app drawer by pressing the home icon on the dock-->press menu then edit. Now you can drag any icon you wish to the dock then hit menu again and save.
2. I don't think there is a social hub widget (at least I don't) but you can download a third party app/widget that will be similar to friends stream.
4. The internal storage is always under "usb storage" in settings/storage. What are you trying to move?
5. Yes, as long as you don't change your firmware.
Hey
thanks for your help Im just trying to move some apps which ive downloaded across to the sd storage but it keeps telling me im out of memory. Im guessing this is because i havent yet added my own microsd, but thats on the agenda for tomorrow
Your welcome. You got it, once you install an external sd you will be able to move files to and from the internal storage.
I'm using Opera, and the flash seems to work fine for me so far, might be worth trying it (especially since it's free).
does seem to be working now...its been a long time since i last tried it
sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone else notice that when you put apps into a newly created folder (for example I have one called favourite apps) and the icons within that folder have moved around....you know how you by habit press a couple of buttons and bam your in xda well because these moved around I launched dilbert! not that this is critical but just wondered if anyone else notices this behaviour?
Hi,
I did the root from InDirect, everything's fine, had the OTA update from B&N come down so spent another chunk of time watching the video on how to redo everything and block the sucker to get old device manager. So in theory I'm good to go. P.S. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'd bake you guys some cookies (well buy some, I'm not a domestic goddess) if I could. I'm a rooting noob and know how much I owe to you guys.
A few things have popped up and there seems to be a bunch of threads but none that help in a clear cut way that my kinda newbie brain understands (or maybe my sleep deprived brain is gaining on me). If you all don't mind pointing me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Problem 1: Google frameworks process error causing a force close window on start up. Yep, I know there are a bunch of threads for this but what do I actually need to do? Replace something? I saw mention of some files (which are in their respective folder).
Problem 2: I kind of like the stock keyboard and would either like it back or something similar. Is there a keyboard you all recommend?
Problem 3: When I go into setting > keyboard the darn thing throws a force close error (com.android.settings). I know people have been getting the same thing and it fixed itself with the darn OTA update but I killed that and now I'm back to square one with the keyboard setting issue - namely I can't set anything.
Problem 4: I have a few google calendars in my google account and on the calendar app I only see one color tag when I view the calendar but when I go to the agenda view on the calendar app I see my other different color coded calendar listings. Why the heck can't I see it in a normal 31 day calendar view with all my calendar color tags?
Question: How can I tell if I have access to all the storage on the device which rooting gives me and which app is the best way to utilize it?
Question: Is there some kind of task killer for running apps on my rooted tablet or should I leave it alone?
Question: How do I "thank" someone for their post?
I promise I've been poking around and I'm not some super lazy a-hole who doesn't want to try and look for things. I was part computer science in college (a combo of computer science and art) so I'm not a complete programming moron though this is the first gadget I've bought and tinkered with.
Basically I'd like to know if I can fix these issues instead of rooting for the millionth time when I inadvertently really mess things up.
Thanks dudes!
Dawn
1. ignore for now
2. recommend swiftkey or swype
3. use the hidden settings app and choose accessibility
4. try third party contacts app like go contacts
5. go to calender app, hit menu button, more, calender and check to see all your calenders are there and if not, add them
a. root access allows you to transfer files to b&n partition
b. i dont use task killers
c. thanks button below if you are using a browser
i can has cookies?
I too was getting the force close message when trying to access my keyboard settings after rooting using Indirect's method. I absolutely hated the autocomplete on the new keyboard and wanted to turn it off, but I just couldn't get to the keyboard settings at first (even with the hidden settings app--it still force closed). A couple of days ago, I installed the Anycut app to help with another problem, and while using it to create a shortcut for an activity, I scrolled past "android keyboard settings" in the list of choices. Once I created a shortcut for android keyboard settings, I was able to go in and change things to suit me (adios annoying autocomplete!). I don't know if this will help with any of your problems, but you did mention you were having trouble accessing your keyboard settings...good luck!
most keyboards have a button to access their settings. you just gotta find it.
On the gingerbread keyboard in the root method to change settings:
- long press on the , and then slide up/over to the settings icon that pops up. This should bring up a menu to make keyboard changes.
- you will find that a number of the keys have long-press options.

Thanks for the tips. Much simpler than my accidental Anycut fix! Wish I had known earlier--I spent hours fiddling with everything but the simplest fix on Xmas day!
a better ipod touch replacement?
Bought one from the BB sale for $65 to give to the 4yo as a music/game/book player. Is there anything that rooting will help me with? are there apps that are available to a rooted phone that would allow me to lock it down and make it more toddler friendly? as it stands I am having a hard time finding a really kid-friendly mp3 player app.
The only advantage I can think of right now is if there is a ROM that I flash that will u/g android to run flash, since many of the games he likes are flash. Are there any other benefits to rooting this for a kid?
I have two other of these as our main phones and his came with 2.2.1(?- no hot spot) and ours came with 2.2 if that makes any difference.
Rooting your phone is mainly to allow complete access to the phone. By rooting it would enable you to do basic things like remove factory installed apps or you could install custom recovery's and rom's.
As far as using it as a music player you can use the built in music player or download a music player from the Android market but those wouldn't benefit from the phone being rooted and not sure if there are any kid friendly ones out there.
I don't know of any apps or Roms that would let you lock out settings or features of a phone that would prevent a toddler from accessing them. I currently run ADW launcher on my optimus V and I know that has options to hide the status bar, hide the dock bar and remove extra desktops. You could install that and make it default launcher, hide status bar and dock bar to prevent access to the app drawer and remove the extra desktops. This would limit your toddler to only have the apps you want available on the desktop. Now this wouldn't be totally locked out because the menu button on the phone is still active which would allow settings to be accessed
There is a thread about installing flash player to the Optimus V with a custom rom but in my attempts to get it to work I wasn't able to. All the sites I visited still said I needed flash player installed. Not sure if I wasn't doing it right but I don't access alot of flash content so I never put much effort into making it work. If you search on XDA I'm sure you'll come across some info on flash.
One note that even though the phone is not activated it will still seek out signal from the sprint towers so when it's not being used on wifi I'd put it in airplane mode to conserve some battery
Hope my little bit of info helps and hopefully you get some more suggestions from others
Guys, Can I pls get your help for the below issues I have with my Sony Tablet S
I cant seem to "close"recently used apps', even after completely shutting down & disconnecting power. Its like I want to "delete browsing history" on a PC
I cant seem to log-out of Gmail at all as I can't see an option to do so.
The remote control learner does not learn at all, inspite of following all instructions. I have a Pioneer Amp to control music, but I've had no luck. After some research I've found out that the tablet can only learn from some models post 2011. Is this true?
I also have an Onkyo reciever for which I've downloaded the andriod app. This works well, but the app inevitably starts with the wrong orientation - inspite of my best efforts to hold the tab in the correct direction in which the app opened the last time. (It seems to rotate regardless)
I have no other issues such as force close or auto dimming as per my understanding of the most frequent issues on this forum
Thanks for your help guys. I really need it. Cheers
You could use "Advanced Task Killer free ( Or pro )
If you close an app does not mean it really shuts down but it wil stay there in memory,
The Task Killer will terminate all running apps.
Gmail is always running unless you uncheck the auto synchronize with Gmail,
you can find that in Settings / Accounts if that's what you meant.
I have several IR devices and i choose them from the device list no problems at all some actions didn't work well so I had to learn it from my remote control that worked fine to.
Orientation is a known issue but if you have your tablet rooted you could use a rotation app which requires root access something like full rotation i quess can't remember.
Don't mind my English

I have learned my tablet remotes from Dreambox 800HD (digitalbox for cable) and from my Harman Kardon AVR255 EU (reciever) and both are pre 2011. I also got it to work with a tv and digitalbox when I was visiting my father in the US. Can't remember the models though, but no problems with the remote. The tv in US was an old "fat-tv" not the new flat-tv
Honeycomb has no built-in method of killing apps at user request and for a good reason: Android does a better job itself. If Android needs to kill an app, it will do so, so you don't need to do it yourself. As for clearing history and the like, thats a bit trickier, but the stock Browser does include Incognito tabs for private browsing.
Gmail, on the other hand cannot be logged out of unless you go into Settings -> Accounts & Sync and either turn off Gmail sync (which still leaves you signed in, but not updating) or simply delete the Google Account. Gmail's not really made to be signed in or out of regularly.
As for your problems with the IR, thats definitely not the case and whatever your problems are, they're relatively isolated. Can you give us more detail on what you've tried and what happens when you do so?
With your Onkyo app, that almost invariably means that the developer has not included landscape support. If there is no landscape option for an app, it will force rotate to portrait, or vice versa if the app doesn't have portrait support. If you're sure they have, make sure that the Auto-Rotate Screen in your Settings toggles is set to On and if it still doesnt work, email the developer and let them know. Could be an isolated issue.
The question was not how to kill apps the question was how to delete recently opened apps and I have this question too. It seems there is no way.
Where are you finding these recently closed apps? As far as I knew Honeycomb didn't have any equivalent of the pre-3.0 "hold home button" dialog. The multitasking button in the bottom left shows running, paused and killed apps together, so there is no way to differentiate between recently used and closed apps, and recently used but still running apps.
maybe this helps

dont know about honeycomb cause i never tried this on it but on ics u can drag the apps out of the recently opened apps drawer and it disappears... try it... maybe it helps... or u can wait for the ics update to help u get rid of this issue....
Yes on ICS. But ICS came out last night us only for the moment. And with he there is no way.

As Schrammi said, that is a new ICS feature and on Honeycomb, the only way to clear apps from the multitasking panel is to reboot (which will also end the app, obviously)
