Hello, I did some searches on this forum already and I can't seem to find the answer to my question. My samsung vibrant is already unlock and I had upgraded it to 2.2 froyo through kies mini and I am using it on ATT with data plan. I want to ask if I decided to turn on the gps and use it with a seperate app will I need to pay for the gps services with ATT? And if I decide to use Telenav GPS app in the phone would I need to pay for that too? Also would ATT know if I am using gps or having it on would that cause any problems? Can you also please be very details in your answer too because I have no idea how this whole gps thing work between the smart phone and cell phone company. Thanks you in advance.
I use Google Maps, and it is free. You can use the build in GPS (hardware) as much as you want. AT&T Navigator app costs $9.99 per month. I don't know about Telenav GPS.

there are a few threads about this already, fond them and read please. This doesn't warrant another new thread.
I bought an unlocked Streak and the one thing I miss is the ability to connect easily to AT&T WiFi hotspots. AT&T branded phones have apps included to do this. Can those be installed on the unlocked versions of the Streak? Does anyone know which ones you would need?

I went round and round with Dell, AT&T Mobility and AT&T WiFi - everyone blamed the other guy. Finally after about a month of frustrating calls to each of their support groups, I was pretty much told - cannot be done, the correct app is not now and probably will never be available to put on the Streak. AT&T WiFi support did finally agree that if you are at an AT&T hotspot that does not have free access like you would find at a McDonalds for example, call their support number, give them your AT&T mobile number and they will give you a temp password - best they would do.
Thanks for the reply.
I had not called yet and wondered if anyone had tried using the app from the locked phone OR if there was a solution from AT&T. I may call because it is supposed to be included if you are an AT&T subscriber, so you should be able to get a permanent PW, the same as if you had home internet with them.
It was something I did use from time to time.
I had never used the ATT hotspot app since I never left the factory ATT bloatware on any of my phones. With all my Windoze phones I almost never used wifi anyway since it was such a battery hog. On the Streak, it is a different story and I'd be really interested if anyone does come up with an apk or another solution to get that app on the Streak.

Hmm.. i have an Aria sitting right here.. let me see if i can rip the apk off of it.

So the At&t Hotspot app on the Aria is just a hotspot locator. It does nothing but link you to http://attwifi.know-where.com/attwifiw/

I notice from your sig that you have an android backflip. Are you able to get the app off of it? Maybe share with us At&T subscribers?

thanks for trying.
It isn't in the ATT-specific section of the market either. I went through that one-by-one today.

I'm on 2.2 (its in my signature)
On the left hand side of the market page if you are holding it in landscape, down at the bottom, there are three icons. If it is in portrait, they are at the bottom of the green field. From left to right they read "apps" "games" and "at&t". If you click on the at&t one, there is a bunch of AT&T junk that I recognized from my ATT Windoze phones.
FWIW, if my phone isn't on the network, the ATT one changes to, I think, my apps.
The AT&T specific section of the market will show up on phones locked to AT&T. On my unlocked Streak I see My Apps where the AT&T link is on my Flipside.
Regarding the apks from another AT&T phone: how likely is it that the ones from A different model phone will work? and which would you need? Is it just an app or is there more to it?
The only apk that is clearly related to the AT&T hotspots on the Flipside is named AttHotSpotLocator.apk. It is simply an app to search for hotspot locations.
On phones with the built in capability to connect to the AT&T hotspots there is an extra setting to auto-connect to an AT&T wireless hotspot. It seems there is more to this than just an app.

Us Streakers need a super-geek android programmer type to figure this out for us. Unbelievable that with an unlimited data plan from AT&T they make it so hard to log into their hotspots just because we don't own the "right" phone in their opinion.

I don't think Android is supported yet. iPhone, bb and even WinMo is though. Even the ATRIX "4G" (yeah right) only supports att Hotspots via Tethering...which you can do with pretty much ANY att phone.
Hi, I am going to travel to Mexico soon, to Juarez, Chihuahua to be more specific. I've been thinking about sim unlocking my vibrant so that I could get a prepaid service while I'm down there. I will start by calling T-Mobile and asking for the unlock code and if no code from them then I will resort to other methods here on the forums. My question is if there is anybody that has unlocked their vibrant and used it with a Mexican company? What unlock method was used and what Mexican carrier used? And what the phone setup was as far as rom and modem? And finally what the overall experience was and if there were any drawbacks when returning to T-Mobile service? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated and a due Thanks in advanced. By the way I have a couple older unlocked phones one being an htc diamond but I would really like to use my vibrant unless it's not worth the hassle.

I unlocked mine using Galaxy_S Unlock
by Helroz on the android market. Just remember to save your EFS folder.
I used telcel when I was in Baja california and it works like a charm. Sold an extra unlocked phone to my friend who lives down there. I bought the sim card but you have to register it but my friend registered it for me.
My Vibrant is unlocked too and i use it whenever i travel to different countries
Do you need a Mexico address to register or can you just make one up?
Oh and another question , is it only talk time you can use or is there a data plan for internet and messaging?

I don't know he planning works and everything but I convinced my cousin from Mexico to take a vibrant before he went back and using telcel I think with faster 3g speeds than me -_-. All he did was unlock it. I loaded bionix V and he said its still running smoothly.

So it seems that telcel is the provider to use by the responses I've received do far. Once I unlock it here in the US then get the sim from the temporary provider, do I need to input an unlock code or will the new sim be automatically recognized? And it's nice to know I can have internet while down there because I use it allot, I guess it will depend on how much it costs as I will only be there for about a week. Thanks to everyone that has responded so far.

If you unlock it using the app from the android market, you don't need a code. I guess if Tmobile gives you a code than you need to use the code.
If you use wifi a lot when traveling, i use my wificalling app instead of using the sim. I can use the wificalling to call the U.S. for free since i have unlimited minutes. If I call mexico, then I use voxofon.

When you say wifi calling app are you referring to one specifically from tmobile? If it is would you happen to have a link or apk for that app? And I'll have to Google voxofon to see exactly what it is. Thanks.

I've looked into voxofon and its similar to skype but it seems prices might be better, I'll have to investigate some more. Maybe I can change from skype.

There is a flashable wifi calling zip. It's a trigger rom but I haven't used trigger in awhile. You can test at home to see if your wificalling works with tmobile.

You can also add the $5 a month plan for international texting unlimited too and use it for a month. or add international rate for $5 a month if you are on a unlimited plan instead of using voxofon. It's pretty decent rate.

Those rates you are taking about are through T-Mobile right. And unless I'm missing something would that do me any good while in Mexico? I'll have to give T-Mobile a call and see what they offer.
And thanks for the link, I've been running trigger for a while now. Tried project V for a while but my phone started acting up after a few weeks of running it so I returned to trigger but haven't visited their page in quite a while to see that there is a wifi calling app.

Hey I installed Galaxy_S Unlock and tried the first option which is to see unlock code and all I got was "fffffffffffff" then it said if that code was shown to use step 2 to unlock. Just wondering if you tried that before actually unlocking the phone or not before I try step 2 and end up with a headache to get service working again?

I posted this in another area of this forum , but I think this is the proper place...Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy SII AT&T and am looking for a tethering app and/or process to get tethering on my rooted phone. I use DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit and it worked flawlessly. I have done some searching and cant seem to find an answer.
What I am looking for is a tethering app (preferably free) to put on this phone so I can share my data connection. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
Not to be a ass or anything but....
Did you even use search?
Point in the right direction below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=101111416
you know there is tethering option actually in the phone, dont need a separate app. Settings->Wireless and Network->Tethering and portable hotspot
@ Pmac 25...I searched...here and the net. I was drawing blanks. Not sure why I could not find anything. Sorry, but thank you for the help.
@highaltitude...I am cool with using the tethering app in the phone, can I use it without issues from AT&T? I mean I know they possibly could track me, but does the root allow use of the stock tethering app?
Not really sure if you need to be rooted or not to use the stock one. I have a grandfathered Unlimited plan, and have so far been too afraid to try tethering in fear of losing my current data plan. Besides, for me, I have wifi at home, a netbook if I need it and can pretty much get 3G plus anywhere in town so I have not actually needed to use tethering. Good luck, there is some good reading in the link posted above by Pmac25
I read in on of the threads you can just delete the tethermanager.apk. I think I can delete this from Titanium Backup. It is listed as TetheringManager 2.07.06(1). If/once I do this, I can just use the stock tethering app on the phone?

High - You won't lose your unlimited data plan! however, if you try to use the tethering option AT&T will eventually find out and give you a letter like this:
Dear sir/madam,
AT&T is happy to provide excellent wireless data service for yoru mobile devices, and we're happy that you're enjoying our service. However, it has come to our attention that you are sharing our service to additional device, commonly known as *tethering*. As you may already be aware, we do offer this additional feature as a paid for service, and will be happy to apply this $20.00 charge on your next bill if you continue to utilize the tethering option...
BOTTOM line, rooting the phone is only PART I, you still have to find and REMOVE the AT&T tethering monitoring APK that is running in the background, (hence the rooting) I *BELIEVE* it's called *tethering2.apk* and IT can only be removed/deleted after phone has been rooted...
Now for the kicker, even with tattertale app removed. AT&T still have at it's disposal human or bot based tracking solutions on their HPSA/3G network to detect when a device is tethering (exact methodology is a closely guarded secret) and so despite your best efforts with rooting and removing the APK, you *MAY* still get the warning letter about the $20 / month additional service charge...
Thanks....

Hello everyone,
After the excellent help I found on this forum with flashing a new 5830i ROM onto my Samsung Galaxy Ace, I am back for help with another question.
I recently discovered that I am no longer able to use my phone as a portable wifi hotspot. This is despite me being able to use it for nearly a full year after my contract started.
I have contacted my service provider (Three UK) and they told me that my service plan has never had the wifi hotspot capability included with it. They said it was some sort of technical problem on their part that allowed me to have it until recently.
They have suggested that I could upgrade to a more expensive plan to regain the wifi hotspot capability, but that it would be limited to 1GB or 2GB per month.
I would really like to know if something has been developed so that I can use my 5830i as a unlimited wifi hotspot without my service provider being able to block it. Can anyone suggest any existing threads in which I can find a solution?
