Ok,first I'd like to thank those of you (devs) and others who work hard and post all the how to's and guides for people like me just getting into modding. I had an iphone and jailbroke each one. I had my atrix rooted on 4.1.57 with gingerblur and wanted to update to 2.3.4 so I flashed edible pudding 1.8.3 sbf and unlock my bootloader.....but now I can't seem to root 1.8.3 or sideload. Not sure if I should sbf 2.3.4 or what. I have gingerbreak.apk in my ext sd and tried gladroot but no luck and I'm not sure which way to go at this point. Sorry for the noob questions but I've looked before the last resort.....which is asking. Thanks for any help.
Once the Offical 2.3.4 update is out how would we go about rooting the phone. i have read other post about gingerbreak not working.
Use SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse ..
You will need to use the preinstall method.

Ken's site give pretty decent instructions under the Gingerbread section.

Will this work with 2.3.4 stock too?
also do you need to have the boot loader unlocked too? I hope not
Yes it works with stock, no you don't need to unlock the bootloader.

Hi folks,
Im sorry for my sily questions. But I read the BIG WARNING from here and cannot selft see what is my case.
All I have at right now is:
- A brandnew Atrix from AT&T since Feb 2011 started at 1.2.6 firmware
- Rooted it by Gladroot method
- Upgraded it to 1.5.7 and then 1.8.3 by OTA (via Wifi)
- Re-rooted (Gladroot) and I've been using my atrix from that till now
Today morning, I received an upgrade message on screen saying that a new update of GingerBread 4.5.91 (en.us) is available for download.
Well, because of the BIG Warning above, I just wonder:
1. Does my Atrix get brick after apply this OTA update?
2. Am I able to flash back to the stock 1.2.6 or 1.5.7/1.8.3 after apply this OTA update?

your atrix will not be bricked but if u try to sbf back to froyo (stock) you run the big risk of hardbricking your atrix there are .zips and roms that are stable and similar if not the same thing you can use if flashing back may be in the question
1. No, you don't get bricked after the update.
2 . No, you cannot flash back to any of the prior stock versions after this update.
I did this update and all went well. As far as I can tell after reading a lot of threads and posts, this update prevents us from flashing back to previous versions but does not prevent us from re-rooting and unlocking the bootloader if we want.

lol i just said this
It appears that some people have had luck. However, I had a stock ROM with only root enabled, and the OTA update bricked me. Went to do the .sbf method from here in the forums, and got an 0x1000 brick. (whee).
Basically, rooted but not Bootloaded unlocked was really bad. I had to unlock the bootloader to re-flash, and now I'm back up and running, albeit 4 hours later.
I think the best bet is to use the Motorola software that upgrades via the USB cable. Mine did come up once via that method before I tried to re-root it (because it came up un-rooted)
Thanks for quick replies, bros. I'm clear now. But my next issues is:
For the highest safety I prefer the flash method, but also love the stability of stock OTA update by Moto.
@TechnoNeto: Pls excuse me if my following ques is sily again: As I found on BRICK WARNING thread above, the provided 2.3.4 sbf is just a beta version (beta 4.5). Is it similar to the OTA official release? Any bug or limitation?
@amenditman: If I apply OTA update, I will get root by Fastboot Preinstall method, right?

kens beta 4.5 is not an sbf its a zip installed through recovery ive been running it since 4.5 was released and its stable, provides the same ui as the ota and experience and will let me rsd back if needed if you choose this method i have a guide if needed.
edit kens rom as of now has not hard bricked phones
Here's what I consider the safest, although it removes root:
Motorola - Support - Software update
http ://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motosupport/source/SoftwareUpdateSummary.asp?country=USA&language=ENS&web_page_name=SUPPORT&strCarrierId=ATT&strPhone=Motorola%20ATRIX%28TM%29%204G&strCable=Micro%20USB%20Data%20Cable&strURL=https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download5/SoftwareUpdateforATTATRIX4Gversion.4.5.91.pdf
My OTA failed more than a dozen times. This worked...
In the process of re-rooting I bricked my phone, but after unlocking the bootloader (which I really didn't want to do) I managed to flash in a working rooted copy.
Sorry for the ugly link - forum software won't let me post it as a proper URL.

Hi folks,
I unlocked successfully my Atrix, but after unlocking it becomes un-rooted, phone was reset to the fresh state. Im following now instructions of Ken's 2.3.4 beta 4.5 Rom but as no root, I cannot do backup PDS step.
My ques is:
1. How can I re-root my phone?
2. At the step "click install zip from SDcard" as guide by Ken's, which mode I have to reboot my phone into to see this option? (I flashed CWM recovery img already)

Upgraded successfully!
Im nearly crazy with new beautiful UI and amazing performance. Moto has really heard from community to improve eveything in this release.
Thanks for you guys here, especially to TechnoNeto who helped me to choose this upgrading method!
Hi guys, I had been running gingerblur on my atrix since the first beta release but wanted to take part in the 2.3.4 soak test so I wiped and updated OTA. I am still running stock 4.5.91 and would like to unlock so I can move back to a custom rom (probably Alien) but I have no clue where to start. This is my first android phone, no past experience with unlocked bootloaders. I am sure there are more than just myself in the same boat so if anyone would be willing to write up a tutorial for those of us on stock 2.3.4 that will allow us to get unlocked, rooted, and up and running with some custom roms that would be amazing.

I went through this thread, it seems a bit dated. A few 404 links too:
Simple Guide to Install the New CWM Recovery: (if you have questions about this, ask them in the proper thread and not here. This is my post from that thread)
1) Unlock your bootloader first:

Fine, I'll spell it out then.. Unlock your bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
Now you have two steps to go, easy enough to figure out in the Development forum.
I'm rooted on like 1.8.3 I believe. Maybe 2.2, but definitely not gingerbread. Bootloader is not unlocked.
Can I simply flash this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204 - the 2.3.4 version, and be rooted and ready to install a ROM while being on gingerbread?
Thanks for your help.

So says the OP... I'd read a few pages first though, just to make sure.

I'd say this (and I say it with the most benevolent intentions):
1) You don't know that 1.83 is in fact 2.2 (froyo). 1.83 just refers to AT&T's software release, not the current android version on your phone. This leads to...
2) Flashing that will get you 90% of the way there, but I fear it won't get you that last 10%, which is the dealbreaker- ROOT. This is because I'm afraid you don't quite grasp ADB...but no matter, I'm here to help.
3) What I would do is flash the 2.3.4 SBF with the BL UL (bootloader unlock)...(all of this found in the thread you linked), but then I'd go here. It's a really simple automated process that works through the command prompt/ADB and, with it, it's very quick and easy to attain root without all the manual ADB commands. On top of that, it's very useful for many other things besides just obtaining root.
Also, you might want to just look at this thread to see if there's anything useful, helpful, or downright lifesaving. And you can thank responder #1 for that.
I hope you didn't take this in the wrong way (frankly, me being a ****). I just want you to know the proper terminology, and not FUBAR your phone.
Always better to ask (though maybe search, first) than to go ahead and brick your device and then be a screaming all about the forums begging for help.
