Upgraded from Evo to 3D this morning, obviously loving it. However, since integrating Google Voice on the 3D, it is processing all my text messages. I would rather use Chomp as I did before. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling as well as reintegrating without any luck. I sent to the voice site and tried to modify some settings but no joy.
I'd like to keep voice for the cheap international calls, any one else suffering this or find a fix? Cheers.
Ok this has been answered quite a few times. But go to your app and hit menu > more > Settings > Sync and Notifications > Check Text Messages and uncheck Inbox notifications.
Unchecking Inbox notifications will keep google voice from telling you about the text but it'll still be saved there. The only downside is that it won't notify you of voicemails. I leave the widget on my screen to show them to me instead. Google was supposed to update the app so we can turn off text notifications but leave on voicemail notifications but they haven't yet.
Thanks for taking the time to write a response. I'm not sure what's happening as I don't have that option, even after redownloading the latest version of Voice from the Market. When I go to menu > more > Settings > Sync and Notifications, under Notifications, I have Text Messages (notify via text message) which is unchecked, followed by inbox notificatoins, vibrate, light and select ringtone. That's all the options there are. I can't unselect text as you mentioned, grr, slightly frustrating, the google text interface looks like it's plucked from the 80s.
Re-read, will play around with "inbox notifications" - currently chomp doesn't even notify, even though it's set to, so I think using this option, I won't ever get notifed. Thanks again.
Uninstall it and reinstall it - when you get to the first option to SKIP! DON'T DO IT.
Google royally ****ed up a good thing here. If you don't skip then things will work as they before the iPhone style takeover.
Appreciate the advice, I didn't skip, I've installed twice and gone thru each step, I'll try again, disabled notifications in Voice, but Chomp's notification ability is not ruined. Grr - why did they change, worked so well on the Evo up til yesterday!! The text engine is a joke, should be an easy option to switch it off.

this is the first major android phone since all sprint is done google voice integration, not a mess up just people not reading all the instructions in in integrating their numbers without knowing

I went through this problem on my og EVO. Turns out you need to change a setting on the desktop ver of voice. For some reason Google decided to uncheck the "get texts on this number" I don't remember where the setting is but dig a bit, you'll find it. Uninstalling the app does nothing

You have to skip the whole Sprint and Google Voice integration. That's what screws everything up.

Sprint and Google integration is great when done correctly. I prefer actual solutions than just avoiding the problem.

Yes its the sprint and google integration thats messing everything up. When I got my phone this morning it went ahead and switched over my sprint number to GV and I was getting txt through the GV app. I deactivated the integration and now it works as before. I just dont get any txt notification when I get a txt sent to my GV number which sucks.

I tried the integration, it worked great for voicemail, but i didnt want Voice to handle my texts - they cant take MMS. I couldnt find anyway to let the phone handle SMS - so I undid the integration...
I have GV+Sprint integration (carried over from integration on Pre-). I took the OTA & all updates.
This was pissing me off so bad. I want to use the app to listen to voicemails, but not for sending/receiving SMS. So here's what I did to keep the Voice app from hijacking the SMS inbox notifications:
Voice>menu > more > Settings > Sync and Notifications
Synchronize Inbox: UNchecked
Background Data: Enabled
Text messages: Checked
now my text messages (including MMS!) still go to the stock messaging app. I still get SMS/VM notifications from the Voice app periodically, but i just clear the SMS ones & listen to the VM ones.
Trying out this combo now though:
Voice>menu > more > Settings > Sync and Notifications
Synchronize Inbox: Checked
Background Data: Enabled
Text messages: Checked (confirmed warning)
Inbox notifications: UNchecked

You didn't set it up right cuz its been posted many times that your default apps can handle text instead of voice.

Then by all means please share with us how to properly set it up. I'm new to this integration as I was predominantly using my T-Mobile and Verizon dealer lines since a bit before they launched this integration and I had the same issue so I too uninstalled the integration. I liked the idea tho. But all of a sudden Google Voice was handling all my messages and they WEREN'T hitting my phones inbox.
To put it simply, Fail.
So please, instead of just telling us we did it wrong, how about telling us how you achieved perfect harmony in spirit of honoring what this forum is about. Helping each other.
I didn't want to read through the previous flames, but if it didn't get answered already you need to go directly to google.com/voice and adjust the settings manually. You have to disable integration, from there you can add a new number, type in your current number and it will tell you you have options to select from, choose google voice lite for voicemail only. I'd get more specific but I cant access the site from here.

I've answered this question atleast in 4 seperate threads even giving Android police links with instructions on how to do it. Sorry if I didn't want to retype it in yet another thread while on my phone, so please don't condescend me when a search would have shown this.

I effin hate Google voice. I notice majorbattery drain when I use the appso I quit usng it. However .... I can't get GV to stop hijacking my damn voicemails. Google needs to stay away from.this type of stuff

Alot of us are using google voice for our voicemail services just fine. I have been since the moment I got my Evo 4G.
Honestly, I think its the best. I do the vast majority of my texting during the day from the computer now. And with chrome + the GV extension, I can check, reply or create from a tiny icon, and not even have to open the GV page.

That is exactly it. I removed my number from the google site then clicked on update my account. Chose to use my mobile number, then chose the light version which only handles VM and no other feature's. Reinstalled it on my phone and all is good to go like it used to be.
Now I just wish spare parts battery option would work I can see if GV has any wakelock issues.

I installed Google Voice and didn't read the app carefully. I selected the Sprint integration and now when I answer a call it asks me to press 1 to accept the call. I cleared the data in app manager and re-ran the app the correct way without sprint integration but it still asks me to press 1 when answering a call. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

It's been a pain for about a week - since Sprint and GV launched the integration service.
The integration does more than make you press 1...
It prevents you from using ANY txt app BUT Google Voice, and reduces your 2 numbers to ONLY your google voice number...
OR
If you select to use your Sprint number, YOU MAY LOOSE YOUR GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER AFTER 30 DAYS!
Rather than turning off call screening (unless you want to, but it doesn't sound like your GV# was your primary number before), you should log into GV on your computer, go to Settings -> Phones, and Deactivate your 3D.
Google Voice will still be enabled for Voice mail after you do this, but it won't infiltrate and take over everything.
You can then go back to forwarding your GV# to whatever phones you like - and hopefully keep it if you chose to use your Sprint # on the phone.

I disagree with what you're saying here. First off you can easily use any text app you want. You just need to make sure you turn on the notify you via text option in Google Voice. Secondly I like having my Sprint number through my Google voice account so that way I can apply my Google Voice rules while still getting my free Mobile to mobile and not having to give anyone else a new number.
Secondly if you want to keep another google voice number, it's only a $20 one time charge.
Thirdly you know how great it is to answer my cell phone number from my computer whenever I have google talk open. Plus I have a Obi110 hooked up to a cordless phone so at home I have VOIP on my Cell phone number. My friends and family have no clue where I'm calling from because it always shows my cell phone number.
Google voice is a blessing if you know how to use it.
It's a headache if you don't though.
Read up on the services features before deciding if you want to use them. I love G-Voice but you need to understand theres one negative aspect of it.
No picture mail/mms services are allowed when you integrate. you'll have to resort to emailing attachments or facebooking or whatever you do to get your content across the waves.
I have not integrated. Right now calls to canada are free with gv but very expensive with sprint. If I integrate one way or another will I end up paying sprints rate or will it be free because of gv?

You have that wrong too. You can still send and receive picture mail mms through your regular messaging/texting app.

Once you integrate international calling is through Google Voice. I don't know if they mention Canada but I know for a fact they handle all your other international calling.

dont mean to hi-jack, i meant to create a separate thread but saw this one and instead of creating another thread, i'll just post here since its related to google voice. I went onto the google voice forum and sprint forum but no one can help me.
when trying to set up google voice, i'm getting an error message saying "your phone number could not be verified. please try again"
i tried re-adding my number and it says "this number is already in use as a cell phone on another google voice account" which is probably why i'm getting an error message on my phone saying it cant verifiy my number.
I also tried clicking on Change/Port in voice settings and going to "Use your Sprint mobile number with Google Voice" and i got an error. i think my account just needs to be reset or something?

Your Sprint phone will show up in that case. For your situation it doesn't sound like you'd want to integrate. It would save you minutes if you do a lot of your talking at home and can setup a obi100 or obi110 box to make outbound and inbound calls on your gv account.
Edit: My bad it shows up as anonymous if you initiate the call from your google voice page. Then again at home I'm using the obi110 I have with a cordless phone or my google talk dialing out as my cell phone number.

Go to the Voice settings on a non-mobile browser and mess around with things that make sense to change. I did that and now I have normal texting back and I am back to using GV just for voicemail like I like to do.

I purchased "Backup to Gmail" about a month ago and love it. (cpedia Mobil in the Market)
It automatically backs up all my sms, call log, and mms to my main google account... restores in one click. And it removes the extra step of deleting things twice. Still no MMS restore, but it backs them up for you.
I couldn't get the integration to work the way I wanted it to; basically like it wasn't integrated - my GV# rings what lines I tell it to - and my cell phone works like a cell phone, unless I specifically want to use GV for a call.
I have specific uses for both numbers - and need the flexibility in caller ID selection when dialing out - as well as for messaging.
The integration thing just wasn't working for me.
I definitely think it depends on how people have been using their phones previously. The integration is great if you've been juggling two numbers and wishing for just one you can tweak with GV's tools, AND keep MMS.
If you've been using the GV# to separate contacts (completely improper usage, admittedly - seeing as how you could simply create contact groups and handle them that way), the integration is a nightmare.

Is this if you're using your sprint number... or your GV number?
I had mine setup to use my GV number, and the only app that registered new messages was GV. No other program received the messages at all.
Maybe this was my problem with getting the integration thing to work.
i was integrated to use my sprint number.
you should be able to log in online to gv and stop the integration you have. then set up the app on the phone again skipping the integration step. then it should work seperately like you'd like at least for calls/voicemail.
Its so odd though. i recently switched from an htc hero200 (sprint) running CM7 and there was no integration. once i switched to the evo, all of a sudden this integration? i have no complaints with GV settings except one... i hate not being able to make calls from 2 numbers. is this simply something with the stock sprint ROM? once the evo 3d is rooted and a rom is ready to be installed, will this integration thing go away?

Just wanted to write this up real fast and hopefully help a few people. I myself, coming from the EVO, did it also. Ya know, just pressing the "next" button and not paying attention to what I was actually hitting next to. I have seen quite a few people and threads about this so hopefully this helps. I had to dig around for answers, lol.
If you were just pressing next, next, next like I was, you will have found yourself with Google Voice taking over your texts and phone calls. And I did not like it at all. When my phone rang, I had to answer and press 1 to accept the call. WTH is that? Anyway, to get it back right you will need to log on to your computer to google.com/voice. In the top right hand corner you will see the settings button (where the arrow is pointing) and click on voice setting. Select the phone tab. Uncheck the boxes that Google has registered your numbers and integrated and you will be good to go. Uninstall and re-install Google Voice if you would like without hitting the integration button on the first step. Hopefully Google will change this soon.
EDIT: Read down with the next few posts, a lot of good info that has been said.

I did the same thing too. I was so upset they ****ed up Google Voice this way. I mean integration is nice, but NOT taking over my text messaging app and phone number etc.
Once I figured out what I had done I was able to get it to work NORMALLY as in before Google screwed **** up. I do hope that Google fixes this "Apple Takeover" crap.
Just FYI - any changes made with Google Voice will reflect as account changes in Sprint.com now.
Or take the time and set it up right and enjoy the awesomeness only Google voice integration on Sprint can give you.

Here are some other cool things I'm able to do now myself. I can make outbound and inbound calls on my google talk using my cell number on my computer wherever I have internet access. I bought an OBI110 and hooked up a phone to it so now I have free VOIP calls whenever I answer or receive calls to my CELL number on this phone. Now I don't have to give anyone a different number and I can still control who gets to reach me at what time of the day. I can answer and receive texts on my computer, laptop, tablet all using my cell number. All my texts are backed up and searchable to my google voice account (even texts I send from my phone using one of the regular messaging apps, not google voice app)
My opinion. Take the time and setup integration right. It's one MAJOR advantage of being an Android user on Sprint now. You're missing out on way more by not setting it up than you would by setting it up.
Oh and for those who don't want to lose your old Google Voice Number, Google lets you keep additional numbers at $20 per number.

Off to check out those links... I tinkered with GV for hours trying to only use it for voicemail and use my stock or handcent for SMS/MMS. I kind of got it to work until I put the GV widget up to see the transcribed voicemail. The widget ended up displaying the SMS!
Finally I said screw it. Ditched the Sprint integration and setup a new number from some far away prefix. Now its great, GV for voicemail and stock or handcent for SMS/MMS.
Until GV can handle MMS and have SMS popups with screen off, I'm not using it except for phone call management.

In order to continue to receive text messages to your handset's Messaging app, you have to check "Receive text messages on this phone" under the Google Voice online phone settings.

I like the way Google voice is integrated, what i hated was the call screening. I finally was able to get to a computer and fix that problem and fix my text message problem as well. I use handcent, so i turn off the notification but kept the pop-up so i don't receive two notifications but i still have the pop-up i like for quick response.
Like already said, log into your Google voice account and mess with the settings until you get it how you want it. you can allow text to be received on your phone and you can turn off the call screening.

I was like... uhhh..... my cellphone...? "Well its a weird number."
Walked into Sprint, asked what I did and the girl looked at me kind of weird. Eventually it clicked (I smacked myself in the head) and we figured out what it was (after two hard resets). She let me use her computer quick and we disabled it.
I like how it took over the phone, but without support for MMS/ picture messaging, I don't wanna use it.
Like many others, all I want GV to do is handle my voicemail. Unfortunately, GV wants to take over my life. I set the flag "Allow SMS on the phone" but they still went to GV. I've actually had to log out of GV in order to get my SMS in the messaging app on my phone. GRRR!
Use full GV integration, use your sprint number as your GV number, do NOT install the GV app, then setup it correctly on the website and you will have SMS, MMS and picture messaging just fine. (FROM your cell phone only, can't send MMS from GV website or any other phone you link)
It doesn't do MMS/Picture messaging if you choose "option 2", use your GV as your sprint. Also, if you do option 2, sprint can't give you the unlimited mobile to mobile because the database uses prefixes to sort which are mobile, and GV numbers show as landlines.
So, yes, if you do your integration correctly, you get your sprint number, GV features, MMS, SMS. GV voicemail, etc.

this is a problem by the app. Everytime you install the app it unchecks the receive text notifications. So anytime you sign out and sign back in the app (which should be rarely) you have to go back and recheck that option.

That incorrect, option 2 still allows for any mobile to ANY mobile. If you go to your google account on the web and your phone number says "sprint integrated" sprint servers know now to include this number as part of your plan for incoming and outgoing. Only difference is mms WILL have you original number, but both numbers are optimized for your plan.

If you do NOT install the Google Voice app on your phone how are you suppose to get your voicemails? IM still trying to figure out this google voice thing im sooo lost. Dont know why its so difficult. I just want to use google voice for voicemail like so many others. NOT text messages. But I get 2 dam notifications every time I get a dam text,lol.

You can send them to your email, or have them come in as text notifications.
Since I switched 2 phone over we've used zero minutes on our plan, except for the any mobile to any moible minutes, this seems more than enough reason to stay using it and not care about the quirks. It means I can drop to a lower plan and save money!
Using the google voice app for texts isn't that bad. Now that I'm used to it I like how everything is sorted by time received and then grouped into conversations, plus voicemail thrown into there. Its a one stop shop.It is great for work, we use just our personal cell phones for communication, I only have to check one place.
Call screening was the first thing I turned off, it was such a horrible idea. It's like they forgot we had that newfangled fancy thing called caller id on our phones.

I stopped that issue way before I bought an E3D. I used it on the OG Evo for seperating calls by dishing out Google number instead of my real cell number. Its kind of annoying how Google voice works though. I kind of see it as a privacy issue especially when it comes to texts and voicemail. Open your eyes people. Google isn't are cell phone company, so why give out such privacy.... To each is own.

i set mine up manually instead of the quick integration step. GV is my voicemail and i use my regular number to make calls and text. if i need to text or call using my GV number, i have a widget to to do that.
Yea once I re installed google voice and is asked permission to take over my voice mail I exited out then went back into the beginning and selected to skip integration. I am not interested in google taking over my sprint matters as well.
I just happened to be going through the AT&T bloatware and happened upon this app - I decided to see what it was all about, and lo and behold, it's actually useful!
It puts your SMS, voicemails, and call log in the same stream. It also puts them in the cloud, and gives you a Speech-to-Text transcription of your voicemails, which is nice.
I have some minor complaints, but overall I enjoy using it. I have a few concerns about AT&T having all my texts on a website somewhere but it's a great way to have them all already backed up if you lose your phone, etc.
You can even send SMS from the website.
So, are you using it? Do you prefer another app for these things?
I was using it the first week of ownership. It's not bad but I quit because people would text me photos and they would only show up tiny?

I use it.
I like the VV to Text and the "cloud" functionality... I only want it gone b/c it takes over notifications and I'd like to use the BLN functionality of Da_G's OC Kernel... BLN doesn't work with AT&T Messages (yet).
@n00b1269, VV to Text (Which is what AT&T Messages does) is different than regular VV. I think if you have your account changed to regular VV, then the original VV .apk will work... I think.

your going to have to call or chat with AT&T to have them reprovison your account in order to use the VVM app thats posted here in the forum i had used the messages app first then it screwed my account somehow not letting the VVM app validate if you look at that other thread i posted there
that sound like google voice only GV is 1000% better!
I used it for awhile, but the vlingo in car mode won't read text messages from it. So I switched back to handcent for text, and YouMail for vvm. Works great, and I love the new plugin for YouMail, called who are you, that gives true caller id for all calls.

Yes. I like att messaging a lot. Its simple and clean. I like the ui better than GV. For my use it has more functionality than GV except for the option to leave different voicemail greeting for different callers.
GV gives free texting but I have the $30 unlimited m to m and texting so no advantage there. Also I don't think GV support mms unless that's changed.
Only problem I can't get SMS popup app to work with it. I'm using Popup app instead and it works okay.

DL it to your pc and email it to your Gmail acct that is on your Note. Then check the box under apps that allows you to install from Non-Market places. (Unknown sources) Under settings-applications-Unknown sources.
PLEASE NOTE
if you have already set up AT&T Messages, you will need to uninstall it and either call AT&T from another phone or log into your online att.com acct and do the support chat. They will have to remove Voice Mail and the feature AT&T Messages. They will then have to provision/apply Visual Voicemail back on.
It works great and I am stoked to have it back on my phone. I just had the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and VVM was on there. Loved it. Anyway, hope this helps.

It did that to me to but I did the support chat and had them remove AT&T Messages feature and Voice Mail. I then powered my phone off and on, they added Visual Voicemail back on, powered off and on again and it worked.
The AT&T Messages feature is what is causing the issue.
I'm using it right now for VVM and it seems to be the only way to receive iMessages (Former iPhone User) in group form. If I try and get the messages from the stock app, I cant reply all... Anyone know of any other messaging apps that can receive and send messages in a group sms/mms fashion?

I know GO SMS Pro supports group messaging, but I'm having an issue with people receiving double and triple messages from me while using that.
EDIT: You can't receive iMessages. iOS and OS X only, for now.
The ATT Messages app seems to work the best for me atleast for the iMessage style group chats. Go SMS Pro always splits it up for some reason, not sure why.

If you launch the Messaging app, you're going to launch the Samsung Messaging app. Just like if you pressed S Memo, it's going to launch S Memo, not some other note taking app on the phone. You need to open the GO SMS Pro icon. In Edit Mode, you can drag and drop the GO SMS icon over the default Messaging icon to replace it in the TouchWiz tray.

i only bring up this questions because i dont like the way the icon looks for the GO SMS Pro... i much prefer the default messaging app icon but i guess theirs no way to change that... cause replacing the icon just puts that ugly GO SMS Icon there... lol
Never used it and never realized it did all that. I thought it was like a chat thing for ATT users like 3 of my friends and me could all see each others texts like a chat room.

To be more specific on the issue with VVM. IF you ran the ATT Messaging app, it causes all sorts of changes in ATT's system on your account. The Tech/Rep looking at it for you will tell you all is well, and in their defence, it appears that it is correct. However, it's not and it's deep in their system and they can not control it.
To get it corrected, you have to have them COMPLETLY REMOVE YOUR DATA PLAN ( re-read that 10x.. it is EXACTLY what they have to do to get it working ). VVM is attached to your data plan. They can tinker with voice mail all day, it will do NOTHING for you. And good luck getting a rep who will actually go though the trouble of removing the data plan, especially if your on unlimited in the states still. However, if you anoy them enough, and keep them on the line long enough, they will eventually do it just to shut you up. Your best method of doing this is actually to go to the store and do it there. The reps there have permission to do it, where as the phone tech's kept having to call other departments to get it done.
After 3 days and 4-5 hours on the phone with a tech they got mine working. So I immediatly loaded the att app, it killed VVM, and I was able to drive to my local store, and they had it working again in 10 minutes ( that is 10 minutes after the guy did what i asked, complete removal of the data plan ). I did this just to prove it was a repeatable fix and not a 1x deal based on some random error.
Apologies if this is irrelevant. I don't have a i777, but I set up AT&T Messages on my i727 (Skyrocket). Didn't take more than a day to realize I hated the interface (and the fact that the app shanghais all notifications).
Unable to resolve how to turn off the notifications, on a whim I decided to just try to uninstall the app. To my amazement, it actually worked. My regular VVM went back to normal. I needed no interjection from AT&T at all.
I know this is very much a "hatchet" solution and not a "scalpel", but hopefully it's helpful all the same.

I have searched this and other threads for an answer but couldn't find one. Hence the post.
I ported my number over to ATT from Sprint (on which GV was working like a charm).
On ATT Note, when I install GV, I don't get the compose message icon. Nor do I get any voice mails. All my voice mails go to the ATT mailbox. I setup GV the same way as I did on the Evo. I even went to Google Settings and I see my phone number listed there.
Has anyone come across this?
If so, could you please help me out here?

When you log into the google voice site does it show Sprint or ATT as your carrier?
if you add the google voice widget it should work..there is a GV toggle widget and there is a full widget that you can read your voicemails and also has a compose button on top right corner..

When I go to configure voicemail service and choose GV, it gives me a confirm box with an error message saying "Change to new provider?". When I click yes, I get a dialog box which says "Forwarding number change failed"
I'll give the widget a try. Thank you.
Update: The widget didn't have a compose button either

Go online and deactivate the device. Once that's done, launch the APK and setup like normal.

Mine is working perfectly on the note, but try removing the number from your voice account and delete the app, then reinstall and setup like normal. IIRC there is a confirmation text or something too. If you ported your number from sprint, that may be why it's giving you problems because sprint has the integrated system and at&t is straight forwarding/app.
I did get the same error message when setting up voicemail, but when I went back in to the voicemail settings on the phone, I was able to select it and get forwarding active. Also, in addition to the full widget, you can setup a shortcut toggle to use voice for all calls/international only, etc

If the above solutions do not work, try opening the stock dialer and enter *004*googlevoicenumber#. That's what I had to do.

I had a lot of trouble setting up mine also. I eventually just set up the forwarding manually through call settings. Works fine but I received the same error during setup but works fine anyway.
U was having the same issues. Turned out AT&T Messages was blocking access to forwarding. I called AT&T customer service and had then reset my voicemail settings, and Google Voice starting working the next phone call!
Messages tries to take over every time it runs, so I rooted the Note and deleted it and other Bloatware.

I was curious if people are having better results these days integrating their Sprint number with GV.
I had it set up when the service was first offered but had many issues that led to me getting rid of it.
I had text message delivery issues primarily as well as some mysterious behavior regarding recieving calls.
I also didn't much care for the GV app itself as the stock messaging app is even better in my opinion.
But that was quite some time ago so have there been improvements made since then?
How many Sprint folks are integrated and what opinions to you guys have on the option at this time?

Can't live without it... It now let's you set the notification to your messaging app so you won't notice a difference compared to not using it. As well, go into the voice settings on your computer and disable some of the call filtering options and you'll never notice a difference except that you'll have visual voicemail that actually works.
Its especially useful if you switch ROMs and wipe your texts because you can still see them all on Google Voice. And it also allows you to text from any device with the app on it or from your computer and still get all your incoming texts back on your phone.
Edit: Basically once you've got it set up right you won't even notice it except you'll have free and better visual voice mail(you can even set it to text you the voicemail when you get it) and you'll be able to text from your computer and review your texts and voicemail online.

I used to love those features. The only its just the performance in was having problems with. I am text message delivery and reception was often delayed or unreliable. I'm still trying to decide if I should try it again. I am a big mms guy too. I am I know I can go back to stock for that... Just not sure if I want to try that again...
I'm not positive but I think text messages are still delivered the same way, through Sprint. They are sent separately by data for Google Voice so basically you get them twice. When I open my Voice app after a while of not using it, it takes a sec to sync all my messages. And every once in a while I'll even get it faster using the Voice app than I do through Sprint if I'm in a bad signal area

Try it, then disable it if you don't like it :good: Tbh I didn't like it on either my HTC Hero or my Nexus S but on the Evo I don't even notice it until I need it. Its especially nice on a CM10/Aosp rom but it works well with Sense too. As long as you set it up right you won't even notice it until you need it.
Couple suggestions to set it up right:
1. On your computer go to www.google.com/voice > Settings > Calls > Call Screening Off
2. Go to Settings > Phones > Make sure its your phone number listed and is Google Voice Enabled and that texts are set to be sent to your phone.
2. Go to the app on your phone > Settings > Sync and Notifications > Receive text messages Via the messaging app AND set Voicemail Notifications on(On cyanogen/aosp this will let you play your voicemail straight from your notifications)
3. Close the Voice app and forget its even installed

Do you get visual voicemail on messages left at your Sprint number or just on your Google Voice account?
Emoji's don't seem to work with Voice, even when set up to receive through go sms with the emoji plugin
Edit: yeah I just double checked, you can't send or receive emojis when using Google voice integration. Well I guess I'll try again in a couple months, see if it's working any better
I just wish they'd increase the volume of voicemails. I can barely hear them with the volume all the way up. The Sprint app is also quiet but it's louder than Google Voice. It makes the app almost unusable for me. I'm trying Sprints VVM again. I do miss the transcriptions but truthfully they are rarely correct.

With integration do you still have a gv# opposite your sprint# ?because that was a good feature to have imo
You can if you want but I chose my sprint number. I also hated this app with a passion in the beginning.. But I gave it anotehr shot since I flash alot and tryin out AOSP it was a pain to constantly get those 9016 texts.. So I tried it again and now I love it. Everytime you flash just install google voice again and all your stuff is back instantly. I did use SMS backup with titanium but waste of time with how easy GV is. Plus you can go to www.google.com/voice and send text messages and listen to voicemail on your computer. So for the guy that can't hear your voicemail just listen to them on your computer and turn it up as loud as you want. I'll never go back to sprint vvm. Google voice keeps getting better and better. Plus I put it on my website as a widget so people can call me right from their computer and I can customize a personal message just for the website and still have my own for my phone. Make the switch and don't look back!

That's not an option when you're away from home, and in an even slightly noisy environment. Even just driving my car is generally too much background noise to be able to hear some voicemails. This is 2012, I think this is unacceptable. I mean really, how long has voice mail been around. GV brings a lot of great new options to the table, but yet doesn't perform it's core service very well. (like the iPhone and making phone calls...haha, but I digress)
My favorite way to use my GV number is to give it to any company who asks for my number. I only use a cell phone so I don't want to give a random company my personal number. With my GV number they just go right to voicemail and if it's important (like I won a cruise or something) they can leave a message. ;o)
I don't use it for text messages, but I imagine it's nice when flashing roms. I just use MyBackup Root to restore texts to new roms. My next project is to learn RomCleaner and setup a good script for that. It sounds like a very smooth, consistent way to getting back up after flashing a new rom.
I love GV and I think it offers some innovative features, I just wish they would take the initiative to increase the volume.
I finally took the integration plunge a few weeks ago (despite always hearing horror stories about GV in the past), and I'm loving it.
Give it a shot.

Also, for those of you who still like to use the stock text messenger app or send/receive texts via your Sprint phone number (outside of Google Voice), there is a great and reputable app ( " SMS Backup+, by Jan Berkel") that works great for those who wipe and flash their phones often.
The app allows you to save all texts to your google account (cloud-based) for later retrieval. So if you wipe, you can restore however many texts you'd like and they'll be back on your phone again within seconds. It also has an auto-sync function so that each time you get a new text, it is automatically saved to your google account for later retrieval if needed. There are plenty of apps out there that do this... The point of Google Voice is that those texts are always there across all your android phones, tablets, PCs, Macbooks, etc. Its useful between flashes sure, but its real use is between devices.
And just as an fyi for those in doubt, you do still get your texts straight from Sprint if you set it up that way as far as I know... Its not just that the voice app syncs them into your messaging app, it really does receive them as an SMS. It becomes more obvious if you send a message using the Voice app from the computer as you won't see the sent message in your messaging app but you will get the replies as a text.
