Ive been reading all these different reviews about cases and i see so many people complaining that the otterbox defender is to bulky. This case is not made for everyone. If you dont have a job that involves alot of physical activity or dont do alot of day to day activities that can potentially lead to damaging the phone then dont pay $50 for something you dont need. Idk if people are buying it just because its the most expensive case and think most expensive is best or what. There are plenty other cases at sprint and bestbuy that will do just fine. Iam a huge ballistic fan but have to admit i think otterbox did an excellent job with the case for 2 reasons. It fits awesome while providing awesome protection and hey......it was available launch day. Theres alot of stores that sold out of the defender and theres alot of people who want the defended and now cant find it. So if you dont like the case....dont need the protection just take it back.

Everyone has there own opinion...you shouldn't let it upset you. If ur happy with it. That's all that matters...right? Really doesn't Warrant another otterbox thread...
Who cares about what other people think?Grow some balls!!!!!jkjkjk
I think the defender is great. I love mine and it isn't as big as people made it seem.
LOL seriously?
The case is bulky as hell... I bought one, I'm going to return it today. Don't get so upset over it, it's not like we slapped your wife or something/.
Im not sayin it effects me personally and trust me if someone slapped my wife wining on xda would be the last thing id do. Just makes no sense to me when people spend all the money on the case....9 out of 10 times the people at the store will snap it on for you and you see right there what it looks like so why take it home? Instead of bashing it all im saying is lets give otterbox some props. Im a diehard ballistic fan but am happy otterbox had a defender case for us on launch day. And i must admit this soft rubber on the defender feels alot better then ballistics hard plastic when holding the phone to your ear during a phone call

Im not a fan of the holster but i think the case is awesome and saves you the trouble of buying screen protectors. Also this case screen protector dosent have the bubble effect problem my ballistic did

I love the defender case. Sure it adds some bulk, but I never really put it in my pocket. I keep it in the holster. I took a dremel and ground down the release clip so that it's not sticking out so much. It's great.
I just find it hilarious that morons buy the defender case and then say it's bulky. Why buy the most rugged mainstream case and expect it to be slim? It's really not even as big/tough as some smaller house cases like the Trident Kraken or Ballistic HC.
im loving mine! The fact that you can put the phone in the holster face in or out and the belt clip locks in the open position makes it double as a kickstand makes this a awsome case!
Yea i just like how this feels when talking on the phone. The ballistic would hurt my ear if i didnt have the rubber outer layer on.....the otterbox is super comftorable.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I Love mine also, just wish I could find a car dock that will fit the phone with it on.
I like my defender case too. It is a little bulky but being able to put the phone face out on the holster is definitely a big plus for me.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
it is bulky, never really bothered me, but also you can tell they could slim these things out some.
I picked up the commuter and I personally think it sucks, the rubber on the top of the phone isn't held in place for ****e.
I had the defender for the EVO 4G and i thought it sucked too, everytime I pulled it out of my pocket the rubber was coming off, constantly messing with it.
I had a defender case on my Iphone 3GS and Loved it, and had one on my blackberry curve and also loved it.
so /shrug seems to me they've gone downhill some, im sticking it out for the ballistic case.
but as you can see, the size isn't really my issue lol.
(appeared the evo 3d case has same issue that evo 4g case did from looking at it.)
I actually don't like bulky cases, and I was planning on going with the Seidio case as my EVO had one on it. I went into a best buy and they happened to have the Otterbox Defender, so I tried it out and I really like it. So I ended up picking it up (cost $54 but meh) and I think I'm going to roll with this for a while.
I did make a modification though... I took the built-in screen protector off. It felt like it had too much grip to it. I like my protectors to be smooth.

Word! I work as a stock manager at a warehouse, had the OBD on my old EVO and it saved it numerous times. Got it for the 3DVO and love the Look and feel of it. Plus, in case folks didn't know, the holster doubles as a dock station with a kickstand, and if you dont actually click the phone into the case, it amplifies the audio quite well by providing a sort of acoustical chamber. All in all, best 50 dollars I could've spent

When you take the rubber silicone outer layer off the ballistic the innercase is a hard plastic shell with the screen protector. Well when your holding the phone to your ear during a call it hurts. The otterbox soft rubber dosent

The thing is a horse but it seeks almost bomb proof. I love it but old wifey wasn't into it for hers ( unless they make a defender with flower prints on it...haha)
Screen protector is thick and smooth. It would be even better if it was anti glare. Coming from the Hero, this phone is already waaay bigger so WTH if I add a few centimeters with this defender. It's solid.
can HTC install a trackball on this thing?

So... I just accidentally discovered this AWESOME feature. On the otterbox belt clip, if you pull the actual clip out as far as it will go(opening it as if you have a REALLY thick belt), a little clip on top will latch the clip open acting as a kickstand. Works PERFECTLY for me!

I got my Otterbox Defender for free. The Sprint Store Manager was trying to sell accessories. The store was having a like accessories sale or something and then when my family and I were getting our phones he came over and offered 3 BT Headsets, and 3 cases for 43 dollars.
My parents aren't the sharpest when it comes to phones so I started haggling with the guy. Swapped out the three BTs for an otterbox and a screen protector and the manager gave it to us for free.

Ya I miss a hard case and holster the leather cases are nice but don't off much protection against the daily use I like keepin my baby clean and shiny
The holsters I speak of were all plastic or plastic/rubber with belt clips. Not the cheap leather cases I hate. They had the defender, and I think the other brand was platinum or something that looked very strong and similiar to the Otterbox cases. They also had the case with the kickstand thats been posted everywhere. I think they had 1 or 2 others as well. I was actually pretty amazed at all the cases they had.
Thanks! Would've never noticed that!

As the evo 3d is an old phone, I bought the otterbox defender for under £3 delivered but it adds too much bulk and weight, so i ordered the otterbox commuter under £3 again and it is much lighter the phone weighs 200g now, not certain what it weighed with the defender, I also got a 10 pack of screen protectors for £1.25 as i am crap at putting them on, or i just hate it when i get dust underneath, but i manged 1st time and it looks great, nice an slick to the touch.
John.
Got the EVO 3D yesterday, and the phone being naked is irking my life!!!
Is the Defender too bulky?
I never had a screen protector on my EVO 4G, you think I should have one on the EVO 3D?
The Commuter seems like a smaller, sleeker fit. But I have read of some people saying it isnt tight on the phone from the top or something.
What do you guys recommend?
Or should I not even go with Otterbox?

All of this really depends on what you do during your daily routine, what your job is etc. Personally for me the Defender was a bit bulky and it also made it hard to hit the side keys on the keyboard when texting.
A screen protector is your choice. The Evo 3D DOES NOT have Gorilla Glass like some have stated so just do as you see fit. The commuter comes with a screen protector that is actually half decent.
Yes, the Commuter is a little loose at the top but Otterbox will send you a replacement at no charge( the silicone part). Hopefully enough people contact them so they actually remanufacture the case.
All in all, if you work in a place where your likely to drop your phone or you don't really baby your phone like some get the Defender. If you are always careful with your phone I would say just go with the defender.
I have the defender and I agree, the side buttons are hard to hit while it's in portrait. I looked at the commuter, I had the defender and commuter for my OG EVO and the commuter was my primary case. The problem I have with the commuter for the 3D is the way they did the camera pod. There is no protection for the cameras, I have an issue with that. I don't own the commuter for the 3D and all I've seen is the pictures so it might not be as bad as I think. Just something to think about.

The rubber and hard shell of the Commuter extends out past the camera lens, so there is that bit of protection. It does not cover the lens but if you lay your phone down on a table there is no way you can scratch them.
I agree with the previous posts, it depends on what you need the case for. If you work in a high risk environment for your phone, I'd go with Defender (I'm talking construction, workshops, garage, other manual labor). If you just want some added day to day protection, the Commuter will suit you fine. I have this case and it still keeps the phone slim while protecting every aspect of the case. I have read that this case does not protect as well against drops as the Defender, so if you are clumsy maybe the Defender is a better choice.
As for the looseness of the case, there is a slight gap near the top. Like Winning said, we are all complaining to Otterbox so hopefully they will do a revised model soon once they get enough complaints. Hope this helps.
Check out other threads on the commuter. I bought it and what people are saying is true, there is a noticeable gap at the top, almost like the case was made a little big. You can also see the gap through the headphone jack. I returned it and kept my previous case, the platinum series from BestBuy. I got the blue one. I LOVE this case. It feels good in the hand, and more importantly it fits snug on the phone. I like that it fits snug because there is way less chance of dirt, dust, and debris to make its way in between the case and the phone.
Otterbox Commuter was awesome on my original EVO, however, so I do have experience with Otterbox cases.
Only thing I don't like about defender is the large sides. Makes selecting pain in arse. Other than that it's light and doesn't pull my gym shorts down.
I wanted good protection so I picked up the defender. A thing about that I really like is that it covers up the camera and the lenses. It really isn't that bulky imo and it feels great in the hand.

HA! AWESOME!!!! Nothing is ever as funny as brutal honesty I love it!
Impact.
Impact is the best case Otter makes, and its also the cheapest.
Defender is like carrying 4 cell phones instead of 1.
Commuter is OK, but has no shock absorption or grip.
Impact has shock absorption and grip and looks nice.
I have the defender like others the sides of the screen are a little tough to reach and I wish it was water proof but as far as total phone protection and protection from dust and dirt it's the way to go. I looked at the commuter and the sprint store even let me try it on my phone I did like how slim it was but that was it. But as others have said it's all in personal preference and life style I can't afford to have anything but the best protection because of my job as a firefighter just wish it came waterproof to.

reply from htc to me re: cases
so i emailed htc about the use of cases with their phones, any physical testing before release, etc., specifically with the evo 3d. here's the reply:
Dear Dave,
I'll be glad to help you out with this information. We certainly do test our phones in a number of manners before they are released, including a number of tests that ensure the durability of the phone. As for recommendation about using cases or not, I don't think we have a stance one way or the other. The phones stand up just fine on their own, but extra protection is always a good thing if you don't mind the bulk. We think of it as more of a personal choice that each person can make. From all reports that I've heard from customers and from my experience with the EVO 3D, it just feels right in the hand without a case; just well balanced and designed. I've also never been much of a case person myself as I just like the way phones feel naturally (at least the ones I buy), so it could be a matter of my opinion. If you feel like you might need a case for your usage of the phone, by all means go ahead and get one; when I do use cases I use Otterbox cases and I'm pretty sure they've already got them available for the EVO 3D. Again, just my opinion, and those do add plenty of bulk, but they're good cases. There are plenty of cases out there, so if you think you need one I'm sure you'll be able to find something you like. However, I think you can rest assured that your device will be safe without one as well.

sweet huh? nice honest response. this company could teach lessons on how to get right to it's customers lately
I had the defender... Loved it, got used to the heftiness. BUT since the front edges were so proud and at a steep angle, I couldn't type properly. All the peripheral letters (p l q a # etc) were difficult to press. I had to retype so many times that I returned the case.
Switched to Commuter and seems fine, albeit about half the heft that I liked. Seems to provide decent protection at a low profile. Otterbox is sending me a new Commuter BC I called and said the rubber seems a bit too large. IDK if it is or if I believed it from overanalyzing it from reading forums.
Anyway, I might report back after I chuck this phone against a wall to see how the Commuter really does. Haha
...adjusting to life without the trackball
Ok here's an FYI for all of us. When i was in the Sprint store getting my 3vo and debating what case I wanted and the rep was showing me the commuter I said that after a little while it stretches out and won't fit right ,she told me to bring it back and exchange it , its got a waranty . It might be a pain having to take it back but I don't mind I'm getting a new case. So just a heads up guys.

I got the impact at radio shack for 10 dollars. Does what it needs to. The only thing I don't like about silicone cases is the dust that attracts to them easily.
I have both. Like others have said, the commuter seems to fit a bit loose on top of the screen. Its also weird when I grab it as the rubber moves around too much for my liking.
Defender on the other hand, fits perfect. I agree that the area around the screen is a bit high buy I've gotten used to it and have no problem typing. I need a holster setup so that's another plus for the defender. It's not bulky either in my opinion, considering all that's going into the case.
I also have the Seidio Surface with holster. It's ok but offers little protection.
In my opinion, the defender offers the most value for the price. It's also the best looking case in my opinion. Its a very good case all the way around.
My commuter fits awesome better than the two I had for the OG evo

I'm quite happy with the Commuter as an interim case.
It has good shock protection and good grip and a thin profile.
It's a great case for me during weekdays in the pocket of my dress shirt.
I'll likely go with Seidio later since I like to use a holster on weekends with jeans or shorts. Not sure why Otterbox ignores that market, but they do .........

i just saw some pics of it on the link somebody else provided... gotta say im not to impressed with the build design for it... looks like they kinda rushed it. i used to use the hc ballistic for my og evo and that was an amazing case, this one not so much lol
I purchased the Ballistic Hard Case and for my large hands it fits very nicely. My review of the Ballistic Hard Shell Case...
The thing I like most about this case that I did not like about the Defender is that the defender I could not click on keys or buttons at the edge of the screen without some trial and effort. The Ballistic is a bit bulkier due to it's design it does not effect my pressing buttons or typing at all I can actually see the 2-3 centimeters of the black edges around the screen meaning I can now play my games without killing myself to hit the buttons or use the keyboard without effort to press keys like o and p when I was in non-landscape mode. The kickstand does feel flimsy and appears it will pop off but treat it carefully and it should be ok. And last but not least the plastic protective screen covers the entire front of the phone unlike the Defender which had a gap that lint and dusts always seemed to find it's way into. I give it a 3.5 star more if the kickstand was of a heavier quality. What matters is the touching of the screen freedom of movement which the Defender SEVERELY lacked but this one does not.
htcEVO9 from someone that has used a Ballistic Case how much does this one differ? I am really curious as the only other case I have seen is the Defender.

i do not have the hc ballistic case for the 3d, but when i had it for the og evo i loved it, superior build quality and like u said the buttons were very easy to push which made it a huge plus. the kick stand was incredibly flimsy that and the silicon piece that was used to cover the headphone jack never really sat in place properly, those being the only 2 real drawbacks of the case. compared to the otterbox defender i would choose ballistic over otter any day, ive seen ppl drop otter boxes about 3-4 feet and the phone still gets damaged, whereas i have dropped mine over 10 ft and thrown it just to prove how superior the ballistic is the otter.
as for the ballistic 3d from what i have seen the interior case deff looks like it is designed to protect the phone, but i cant say the same for the silicon skin, build quality deff looks like its lacking, looks poorly done is what im getting at. but if you can get over the physical appearances then i am sure that the case is still much better than an otterbox.

Someone here did a review and it seem solid, just not for me. Can't remember the reason. Likely because I already had OtterBox Defender?
I have a Seidio Active and love it. Easy to remove and put back on, has access to kickstand, and not as bulky as some other cases but offers good protection.
All boils down to personal preference.
I have the Seidio convert case with a flygrip on it. It does add some bulk and you can't use the kickstand with it unless you take off the two outer layers. The protection is great though, covers over everything including the camera. The holster works nicely and has been secure so far. If you don't mind the bulk and like protection from drops and dust its the best case IMO. Get the flygrip if you want a kickstand and more, you won't regret it.

I have the Otterbox Defender as well and really love it. I have to admit though a friend of mine just bought a Trident for their Samsung Epic and it was totally hot! It might be a great ... next case
I have been using the Incipio Silicrylic case for a while now. It seems to offer enough protection without adding too much bulk. The only thing I have against it is that the silicone skin is just thick enough to prevent the phone from seating completely on the connectors on the car dock. Fortunately, the shell and skin are easy and quick to remove.
i use the otterbox defender and mounted the belt clip to my forklift at work and mounted a speaker and now i jam all day at work plus i can take calls lol

also. customer service rocks at otterbox. i got into my girlfriends car and hit the belt holster on the side and the belt clip broke.. i called them and they sent a whole new case to me.
Boxwave Unicolor is the one I just recently purchased. It ia slim good looking case

I love my Evo LTE, it is an awesome phone! When I bought it though I received the horrible news that TEP from Sprint had gone up as well as the Asurion Deductible. Normally I don't like cases because I like to keep my phone sleek but with this in mind I had to buy one. I opted for the OtterBox Commuter (I bought on Amazon for a little over $20 shipped). So I thought I'd hit you guys up with a review just in case anybody is on the fence about what case to get.
Overall:
I liked the tight fit, the good amount of protection without the bulk, and the fact that the kickstand is perfectly accesible and usable in both directions Plus it's relatively cheap. Check attached images. I had no problems with any of the cutouts for microphone or the back camera. Also the charging port and headphone jack coverings worked fairly well. They were a bit bothersome, mainly the headphone jack, depending on the size of the plug but overall they're pretty good.
Fit:
I must say this case has a TIGHT fit on my phone! It is not loose anywhere and the silicone is actually pretty tight on there unlike other two layer cases I've tried. It is tight enough that no dust has gotten underneath it to the case which I hate when cases do that! Also all the buttons are unaffected by the case and I like the feel they have with it on. Oh and the kickstand can still be used both ways, port up or down!
Size:
The case hasn't added much bulk at all. I still think this phone is pretty thin with the case on. I took a picture next to an Evo 3d with no case on just for size comparison and as you can see, this case adds little to no bulk.
Protection:
I feel my phone is pretty well protected. I already got past the 1st scary fall yesterday when I dropped it running down some stairs :/ but my phone was not harmed at all, neither was my case. Obviously it's not meant to be a hardcore heavy duty run over with a car case (as rumored with some Ballistics) but it's a good balance between protection and keep it thin.
Screen Protector:
I personally don't like screen protectors too much. It seems unnecessary for this phone with Gorilla Glass but it's still a nice gesture for it to be included. I installed it for demonstration purposes since many people with screen protectors had problems with proximity sensor. The protector included in the case had the cutout for the proximity sensor which was definitely a plus. I also noticed it's a pretty hard screen protector and feels almost like bare glass, but I still don't plan on keeping it for long lol
The Bad:
The only bad thing I've found so far is that the silicone is a little bit of a dust magnet. It hasn't gotten too serious to where it bothers me but it's just something to note.

This is what I hate about silicone. Also, it ends up making it difficult to pull out of your pocket because of how sticky/tacky it is. Thanks for the review.

Great review buddy. I get the lint all around the edge of the screen's silicone also. Anyone have any good cleaning tips for getting lint and dust off the silicone parts?

I dont normally like to put cases on phones either but this phone...i dont know I had the overwhelming urge to put a case on it. Now i was going to go wit ha normal regular hard shell case off of ebay for 5 bucks but..no.. not this time. I got the otterbox commuter aswell. Truth be told I was worried about the silicone not fitting perfectly but to my surprise it fits damn well. Plus the case feels good in the hand. I actually like how the phone feels with the case on. i did put the screen protector on because look at it this way. $600 phone with ''gorilla glass''..... youre really not going to do anything to protect it? Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof. My opinion is youve gotta have a few screws loose if youre not going to put a screen protector on the phone.
over all great case, feels good, doesnt add bulk.
The defender however...makes the phone huge
I rocked my OG for two years with every rugged case u could think of and never worried about the phone. The last month I had the phone I had it naked as all of my cases were breaking on me. I loved how great the Evo felt naked and how easy it was to slip it into my pocket. Anywho, I ended up dropping it and shattering the screen. I bought the new Evo and slapped the Commuter on it before leaving BB. I thought the Defender was way too big for pocket use (I'm over the belt clip thing). It maintains the sleekness of the OG Evo, so, I love it! The included screen protector is pretty good too surprisingly. Not a single complaint from me!
Yeah I have actually kept this case on and been loving it. The case adds a really nice feel to my phone and I honestly like the look it gives my phone. I have yet to try the defender but when I do ill do a write up on it as well

I love the review. I'm actually about to switch from the defender to the commuter case. Getting tired of the extra bulk and the rubber on the defenders seem to tear rather quickly. I had the same tearing prob when I had a defender on my e3d. Had the e3d defender replaced twice. So again thanks for the review picking up a commuter case tomorrow.
Bought the same case as soon as I got my phone, beat case hands down still nice and thin the dust magnet I agree but its protective and not heavy ! It was cheap too off amazon. The port cover is clever

I have the defender case and the rubber over the charging port keeps breaking off. Does that happen with the commuter case?

Yeah spot on review I feel the same way about my commuter case. I had the defender for my OG EVO but I like the feel and look of the commuter on my LTE so much better
