Hi all,
I am aware that there are some other posts about newbie and firmware questions, but I guess since I upgraded to the latest firmware - hope it is okay to ask the question.
I have recently upgrade the Android to 2.3.4 XXKG6 - but now when I connect to Kies it says that the firmware is not upgrade-able. did I do something wrong?
What is the most stable, useable, efficient firmware available?
my phone is :
Model:GT-I9100
Android Version 2.3.4
BaseBand: I9100xxKG6
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100KG6-CL425236
Build Number: GINGERBREAD .XXKG6
It will be much appreciated if I someone can point me to the right direction on how to do the installation and where I can get the files.
Thanks again
i think its saying not upgradeable as thats the latest software isnt it? i believe it is so it is simply saying there isnt any further update CURRENTLY
xxkg5 was the official firmware that is upgradeable with kies.
xxkg6 is a custom that is cooked here at xda.
Cooked firmware does not work with kies as it is not recognized that is why you have to use either odin or cwm.
There is a warning at the beginning of the xxkg6 thread that tells you that kies will not work after installation.
Kies will pretty much never upgrade you from an odin flashed firmware, most of the time it will not recognise it as a valid version due to mixing and matching files.
Though, by the time you are odin flashing you will have gotten fed up by how slow firmware updates come anyway
But yes, KG6 is the current "best" stock firmware available.
Thank you guys.
This is a steep learning curve for me at the moment so bare with me
So, currently I have the latest Custom Firmware, is this correct?
Another questions:
* when I use the ODIN to flash the firmware to KG6 the option of "repartition" is not ticked. Do I need to re-flash it again and "ticked" the repartition option?
is there any difference with the "Repartition" option ticked and NOT ticked?
Thanks again
Sometimes a flash may carry a file called a pit file.If so the re-partition box will be automatically checked otherwise never under any circumstances should you check that box if you are not using a pit file.If it is needed the instructions will let you know otherwise never. If you are on XXKG6 and all works fine there is no need to do anything else unless you want to flash a ROM or something. That's up to you.
Sorry to be a big pain here but I am wondering if it is possible to down grade / RESTORE to the original firmware I had? (incase I want to)
it was
Android version is 2.3.3
build number is z2KG2
kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100
I should have asked this before I did anything else.
thanks again

I did the stock firmware as stated in the :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
What I did was downloaded the ZSKG2 firmware and using ODIN I flash the firmware. Is this way to do it to go back to official GingerBread 2.3.3?
I didn't do any Root processes.
Do I have to do the Kernel flash as stated in the tutorial? :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
My understanding is that I do not need to do the Kernel unless I want to do Root. am I correct?
*** Reason for trying to go back from 2.3.4 XXKG6 is because my WIFI signal does not look as strong as the 2.3.3 (let me know if this is incorrect)
Thanks
kernal flash is to bring to stock that mean it removes the root only.
firmwares do not change gingerbread versions from 2.3.3. to 2.3.4 or 2.3.4 to 2.3.3..
you need an offical carrier branded version that does a wipe of your phone.

Hi all,
I have restart My modem and and my Phone but my WIFI is not improving at all, I am just wondering if any one can help on how to put it back to my original firmware
Thanks
Your phone has gone into whats called a boot-loop.To get out of it enter into recovery mode (menu-volume up-power button) wipe cache, wipe cache repartion, factory reset and reboot system. If that doesnt work enter in download mode and repeat the full flash following word for word the instructions and repeat if needed the recovery wipe.
use this to wipe your device and return it 2.3.3, then upgrade back to xkg2.
XWKF1
This package has: PDA:XWKF1| PHONE: XXKE7| CSC:XEUKD1.
This will wipe your device so do a backup!
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/9OTQ8C6O5D
XWKF1 Stock Kernel: Use the ZSKF1 kernel, it's the same kernel.
THANK YOU ALL!!!
I got out of the boot loop using : recovery mode (menu-volume up-power button) wipe cache, wipe cache repartion, factory reset and reboot system
Thanks Cooza for the info. I got to 2.3.3 now
Now that I am back to starting point again. I would like to hear from you guys of the plus and minus of upgarding (which I should have asked in the first place)... I am learning the hard way...
Thank you for your generosity and patient explaining to me.
Thanks

Hey guys, I just got my Galaxy SII and I spent the evening reading the various walkthroughs and threads around here (rather than actually playing with the phone). I feel pretty comfortable with all the various procedures, but there are A LOT of kernels and firmware to choose from, so I'm pretty lost as to which ones I should select to do what I want.
Carrier: Bell
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
PHONE: I9100MUGKG2
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
Build Info: Tue Jul 12 10:19:43 KST 2011
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100MUGKG2-CL371789dh130.yoo at SEP-48 #2 (There's an amphere where one should be, but I had to get rid of it to bypass a posting restriction.)
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Essentially what I want to do is root the phone and update to the latest stock firmware available. I think that's 2.3.4 KH3? Eventually I want to have Cyanogenmod 7 running, but only once it's out of the nightlies.
1) Anyway, the first step would be to go to this thread and download XXKH3 package and stock kernel, and use Odin to simultaneously apply the PDA, modem/Phone, and CSC, correct? Then use Odin to apply the XXKH3 stock kernel. Or is it the other way around--kernel first THEN PDA, modem/Phone, and CSC? (Well, I think Intratech makes this clear in that thread, but I'm just making sure I'm following.)
2) Then, assuming I installed the XXKH3 stock kernel, to root the phone all I have to do is use Odin to apply the kernel from CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.zip from this thread, right?
And that's it--done?
3) Finally, if I wanted to make a complete backup of everything first, how would the procedure above have to change (assuming it's correct in the first place)? I'm guessing I'd have to flash the kernel using CF-Root_KG2 and use CWM to make a Nandroid backup?
Thanks!

Er, so if I flash the PDA, modem/Phone, and CSC, that also flashes the kernel then? I'm a bit confused about this since I thought they were separate.
Thanks for the reply.
The kernel is included in the PDA. They post a stand alone kernel so you can flash back to it after applying CF-Root.
Sent from my GT-I9100
You have to use CWM to flash zImage of CF-Root Kernel so as not to break the boot for CWM.

Oh, I see. Thanks.
One last question: If I'm understanding correctly, installing the XXKH3 firmware will change my phone's CSC to OXA, which as I understand covers an array of European countries. Will this impact how my phone operates here in Canada on Bell's network? Intratech wrote that CSC affects things like settings for data connection and regional-specific software, which gives me the impression that it would be better to have the CSC as Bell's version. But if flashing with the XXKH3 package overwrites the CSC with OXA, is it possible to change just the CSC back to what it was before? Or am I just worried about nothing?
(This is my first smartphone so I'm still trying to get my head around all of this terminology.)
(Edited for clarity.)

Hm, can you please elaborate? I thought all I had to do was;
1) Odin (as PDA): GT-I9100_XEO_I9100XXKH3_I9100XXKH3_I9100OXAKH3.tar;
2) Odin (as PDA): CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH3-v4.1-CWM4.tar to root.
The first flash wouldn't give me CWM, I think, since it's just stock firmware. The second flash would put CWM on, but I'm not performing any further modification after that so there wouldn't be anything to break its boot. (Whatever that means.)

Bell's csc includes their apps like remote pvr and self serve as well as their APNs. The apn information can be added manually and the apps can also be downloaded from the market, so there is really no reason to need the bell CSC.
Also, the Bell CSC is too big to be installed with KH3. It leaves zero room on the system partition, so rooting the rom is impossible. Just go with the OXA csc. You can find the bell APN info on their website if you need it.

This process will work fine for you. However, you'll be stuck with a yellow triangle at boot. This is why people flash back to stock kernel after rooting their phones, to get rid of the triangle. Not a required thing, just a cosmetic thing.
Hello everyone, currently i'm using the CF-ROOT KF3 kernel but it's 2.3.3 and i'm not getting any updates so i thought it would be better to update the kernel myself, but...
1) On the CF-ROOT page Chainfire said to choose the closest kernel version to the stock, is it just to keep the phone as close as possible to the original or it's a compatibility requirement?
2) As far as i know, CF-ROOT does not change the modem or csc. Are the improvements of the 2.3.5 mostly related to the kernel or to the modem and csc also?
3) Any special "flavor" of 2.3.5 recommended? I mean, there's a bunch of zips in that thread...
Phone info:
PDA: XWKF3
PHONE: XXKF1
CSC: JVKF1
Thanks
Just use the secure one if you don't need the ADB.
The one from my sig works best, IMO, because 4.2 uses SuperUser 3.0, which has some 'issues' as of yet unresolved.
I'd suggest you use XX_OXA_KI3: 2.3.5 4.1
Thanks! Is it better to flash the kernel via Odin or CMW?
Weird, i have used CMW, it rebooted but it's still 2.3.3
Edit: I've tried to install via CMW boot screen and it says Installation Aborted with XX_OXA_KI3

2.3.5 is a firmware package new firmware new kernel new modem.
A kernel is part of the firmware .

Yes but Chainfire states that it's only the Kernel, extracted from the original firmware package, so, is the sound improvement, better battery life, etc bound to the kernel only, or i need the whole package?

Hi,
Bought a GS 2 a couple of days back and its running the following firmware
Baseband : I9100DDKE4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555
BUILD NUMBER - XWKF3
Have a few queries regarding flashing firmware
1) Can i flash the KJ1 firmware from Intratech's official firmware list?
XWKJ1
Android 2.3.5
This package has: PDA: XWKJ1| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: XEUKH2

2) The firmware mentioned above has only one file.
If the package only contains one .tar archive then it will have everything, pda+phone+csc, in the one file.

3) Since the above package only contains one file, updating to the above firmware would change the CSC. I'm from India. And hence i would lose the settings.
How should i proceed?
I am very much new to this. The above questions maybe / are silly, but would like to know how this works.
Many thanks in advance.
Yes using odin, you can always flash another csc after, I suggest you read the thread and understand the basics of flashing firmware, before you proceed, flash cf root using odin so you will be rooted and reboot into recovery or use cwm app that comes with cf root and do a backup, so if things go wrong you can go back into recovery and restore back.
You can find cf root in original dev section.

The firmware update contains a baseband for a different country. If I update using the above, would I lose my network/data connectivity?
Thanks,
Shray

So if i update to the package without flashing the original CSC back, would i still be able to access my mobile network and data?
In other words, does the CSC have any carrier settings? I own a unlocked the GS2
Any help on my query?
Yes will be able to access the internet.
I tried a firmware of different country and even after that my GPRS and general call and text were working fine.
Later i flashed Indian CSC.

The CSC contains some customizations, but responsible for your baseband/network and data connectivity is the Modem/Phone part.
As there are many other users of your region/country running on Intratech's ROM versions, this should work for you as well.
P.S.: I prefer Frankenstein versions, as you can combine them with any other Modem/Phone and/or CSC.
Just download the files you need/want to use, put them into the corresponding section in Odin and flash them at once to your phone.
Good luck !
Seeing how easy it was to root my Samsung S2 with Gingerbread I tried it as well after the ICS update through Kies but after the process my phone just stays at the loading screen with the yellow triangle. I tried re-doing the steps and also tried a factory reset in recovery mode, cleared cache but it does not want to boot up. I then noticed I never looked at my firmware version and now I am unable to get this information as the phone does not start up.
Where do i start to get my phone working again. Below is all the details I could get from my phone:
Samsung GT-I9100
Serial Number: 355310040993713
I noticed when my phone was rooted with Gingerbread and I did the upgrade through KIES to ICS it removed my root access - is there a similiar way if one is not able to boot up the OS? Also recovery mode and download mode all work so I assume I do not have a brick?

No you don't have a brick.
1: flash the stock kernel if you know what ROM version you had using Odin.
2: flash again using Odin.
Also do the code wipe after flashing. And start from scratch.
Do not restore GB backups and use correct CF-Root to get root.
Thanks for the quick reply - but that is the problem. I have no idea what my kernel version is as I did not take it down before doing the rooting.

Well that was foolhardy.
How did you try to root after you updated to ICS then? Sounds like you tried to root by flashing a kernel; how did you know what kernel to use if you didn't know what your original kernel was?
You may need to flash a full stock firmware. That will include a stock kernel too.
well in that case flash a stock latest ICS using odin
after first boot dial *2767*3855#
it will wipe your phone but will fix the problems that may come later.
Ah okay - so I can use the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" (sorry cannot post links yet) on the xdadevelopers forum?
Would this also mean I am still able to use my phone with Samsung Kies or when does Samsung Kies normally stop working?
EDIT: I also stumpled across the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" thread. Would it be safe in my case to grab one of the official firmware that matches my region or is this to risky?

Yeah I was indeed foolhardy - I used XXKPA ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware. I just finished downloading the main files as per the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" guide. This should cover the full stock firmware and stock kernel?

Both recovery packages for GB and ICS both look like full firmwares. So yes, they will also include the kernel.
Just follow the guide.
Okay - the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" fixed my issue but now Samsung KIES gives me a "Your device does not support software upgrading through KIES".
Is there something else I can do or should I start looking at the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" and can I just use the region closest or supported by mine?

Kies will only update if you currently have a firmware/CSC combination that matches your region, and your region is officially supported. That is not likely now that you followed that "fix an unflashable or soft bricked" guide. Also, if you are in a non-supported region, Kies won't work for updates either. For example, I am an I9100 user in the USA, where it was never officially released, so Kies doesn't work for me for updates.
But now that you've followed that guide, you are familiar with flashing your phone yourself, and can use the Official i9100 Firmware thread to download and flash whatever version you want. No need to rely on Kies.

Excellent - this is becoming very interesting. My region was supported (Namibia) but I bought it in Germany. I see the latest release date firmware actually includes a German version. Those the region actually change the language of the phone as well?

The stock kernel is linked in case you need it. It is also included in the full firmware package. But if you root with an insecure kernel, or flash a different kernel that auto-roots, and for whatever reason want to flash back a stock kernel, it is there for you.

Is there a way to grab the firmware of another Samsung S2 (girlfriend has one as well) and use it to flash mine?

I think there is, but I don't know what the method is, as I've never had to do this, and have not been curious enough about it to research it for myself.
You don't have to grab any thing! Just see what very she has and you will find it in Sammobile or Intratech's thread or general forum.
