[Q] SGS - SGSII display sharpness comparison? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if (previous) SGS owners that own a SGSII could comment on the differences in display sharpness between these units? IMO small text looks very bad/jagged on the SGS (fixed partially by speedmod kernel with sharpness fix).
From what I understood the new screen theoretically should be sharper (RGB vs. pentile matrix layout) but I'd like to know first-hand if it makes a huge difference or not, especially for small text?
UPDATE: I did a careful comparison of small text on my SGS (2.3.4 JVP, Speedmod Kernel with Sharpness fix, dpi 220, EXT4) with an SGSII of a colleague, and my conclusion is that IMO there is not enough difference in that area to justify getting an SGSII. If you are mainly looking for a speed improvement it might be worthwhile though. I thought my tweaked SGS was fast, but I was truly amazed by the speed of the II!

Thanks! I know the specs, but I was looking more for user opinions on a sharpness comparison regarding small text.

it's slighly easier to read on the SGS2 because they ditched the pentile matrix scheme on the SAMOLED+. The difference isn't that great mind you, but it's there

The sub pixel count increased, but the screen size increased too which basically cancels out the improvements. The Samsung infuse especially doesn't look sharp.

So the consensus is that there is not that much difference in crispness/sharpness of tiny text ? I really hoped that I would be able to zoom out small text a bit more on the SGSII without it becoming unreadable?
O well, I guess I just will have to physically check it out myself.

If a sharp display is what youre looking for, you'd best steer clear of this device. Dont get me wrong, the screen itself is quite nice (so videos look good), but the resolution is so incredibly low that text and pictures, especially while browsing, look terribly pixelated. I'll post a few photos in a bit to give you a general idea. Why samsung would ruin the the screen's vibrancy and sharpness by going with such a low resolution absolutely boogles me.

Here are some photos, as promised. Make sure to look at them at 100%. You'll notice the photos are incredibly blockey/pixelated.

Seriously, this is the screen everyone is raving about? Am I missing something here?
Also, on a separate note......8 megapixel camera? Seriously? Here's a photo I took today in Ginza on maximum resolution, superfine. The result, cloudy/washed out/blurry. Seriously......photos came out better on my 3 mega pixel 3GS (no, not a fanboy). Look for yourself.... (again, make sure you're looking at the picture 100%).
What the heck is going on?

Looks like you need to clean the lens, photos on my sgs2 are amazing

Are you sure your browser is not forcing the picture quality down for mobile browsing? Plz check for such option as you can see the text is sharp its the images wich look bad.

Hi Cloned, thanks for your reply...
Lens is clean.....it's a brand new phone for gosh sake. Also, if indeed the pictures are only terribly because of some setting, do you know where that option is? I'm unable to find it. Also, you should know that although for some reason text appears clear here, its quite blockey on the actual phone...

anybody?....

Dunno what's wrong with your phone, maybe you got a dud. Take it back to store for exchange.

There is nothing wrong with your screenshots, just looks like your viewing a mobile website that has gfx for low res devices, and scales them. Text looks sharp and believe it or not that uses pixels too

I've never seen any pictures that pixelated on my sg2...
Sure there are crisper reso screens out there, but the sg2 still looks fine.

Screenshots are no indication of display quality at all, it's just a bitmap of what *should* be displayed, not what it actually looks like on a particular screen (would need a macro photo for that).

Seriously, you can't use screen caps to compare screen sharpness. A screen cap on a SGSII will look the same as a SGSI as the image is captured before it reaches the AMOLED display.
That lens of yours looks dirty. Here is a photo that I took with my SGSII through a window and it is heaps sharper.

Clean ur lense..that is not hygienic at all...use the cloth they use for monitors..

The sgs-II can make very good pictures
Yours look like it still has the protective plastic on the lens and a saved screenshot does not show nothing about the quality of the screen.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App

Remove the back cover, clean the lens like everyone has mentioned above and then put a small sellotape to cover both the flash and the camera from scratches.. put the cover back on once done.. you might want to repeat these once every alternate weeks depending on how you use your phone and where you place it, etc.

[Q] HTC mozart camera....

Anyone know if a software upgrade will be able to refine the camera at all?
As it stands iphones camera ****s all over the mozarts shutter speed is too slow, needs ALOT of light to take a clean crisp picture and so on....
So yeah, anyone heard/read of a possible upgrade for it?
ps. Loving the mozart, dropped it 3 times (apprentice sparky) and no breakages. HTC know how to make a decent phone XD
thats something i would also like to know...
Can anyone took good pics on moving objects??
I hope there's some sort of fix, third party or official.
I almost bought a Mozart the other day but saw some sample shots
I thought my SGS had a bad camera!

Please tell me how the following photos aren't good? They're as close to perfect as you can get with a phone as far as I'm concerned!

Alex
the perfect photos u posted..... You have to be PERFECTLY still to take them, and even when u are.... the slightes flash of a light, movement will blur in low light.
The iphone cameras lense has an entire f-stop more than the mozarts, so as far as quality goes, the 5mp iphone camera is better. 8mp just means u can blow up your blurred photos bigger than u would be able to blow up an iphones... but when u have dark, blurry shots.... i know im using them anytime soon
Yet as i said in my original msg, in full light, camera is perfectly fine. Take a bit of light away and the quality degrades VERY quickly
Iphone has 3rd party apps that get every bit out of the camera, hopefully a program will come out on windows phone that will give us the same.
Panoramic camera ugrade app !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please!!!!!!!!!!
this is the pic I took this morning
for me I think the camera and the video recorder is OK

Quite surprised to see a handset with a xenon flash take such low quality images, what a letdown. Still wationg for the next android / iOS handset with xenon..
i dont know guys,
this looks like a damn good camcorder to me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKh-dotIhTs
but ive seen other videos too were autofocus killed the whole clip.
still you cant compare it to iphone4 cam like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivosrlf0JJc
remember iphone4 is double the price and 4th generation cam
here is a nice compare of these two starting at 4:21
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eabDFVjIL20
mozart lacks in color it seems xD
What annoys the hell out of me with regard to the camera here is the button and the sound.
The button is too tight, I can't hold the lightweight phone steady when pressing it no matter how I try.
And then the sound. When you take a picture with flashlight, it triggers the sound, then flashes once for red eye reduction, and then takes the shot, flashing for the second time. Every normal person starts moving after he/she hears the sound, while the actual shot is taken some two seconds after.
I had a Nokia N79 with a 5MP camera with a Zeiss lens and it took fantastic images. The mozart ones are totally crap. 9 out of 10 are blurry for me. The noise cancelation is far to strong it it gets the focus wrong (at least a little)...
As soon as the first Nokia WP7 phones come out I will upgrade...
On the other hand there might be some issues with my camera. Otherwise I can't explain these photos: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bill/archive/2010/11/13/htc-mozart-camera-photos.aspx
Well... we have lack of control on the camera part... to be perfect.. more settings need to be done during the photo were taken... but with this Mozart... not even a single preset can be found... when you're in low light condition... you gonna find your pics in a bit "blue+ish" mode..lol....
I love to play around with the camera... for a still picture, i'm gonna share on how to create a Lomo "look-a-like" pics with your Mozart ;
Apps needed :
1. Photo FX Free
2. HTC Photo Enhancer
..............................
First , take any picture....and open this Photo FX,
Choose : Manual (brightness, contrast, vignette)
You need to reduce a bit the brightness, increase a bit your contrast... put more vignette... then save the picture...
Later... you need to open the HTC Photo Enhancer... and open the previous saved picture.... choose under "Lively" mode... and save... there you go... you gonna get a vibrant color / tone just like a "Lomo" pics... hope you guys like it...
does somebody know an app for camera with touch focus, shot controls on display and other useful settings like dslr settings ?
I've had the phone for 2 days ad have noticed that the shutter sound goes off well before the camera has actually taken the photos - hopefully HTC will fix this in a future update but for now my advice to anyone is to ignore the shutter sound.
Other than that I have been fairly impressed with the limited amount of test shots I have taken.
I am on the fence on if to get the Trophy or the Mozart. As crazy as this question sounds, with all the issues the Mozart has is the camera actually better in the Trophy?
And I am leaning towards the Trophy for a silly reason - Xenons cannot be used as flashlights.
But I do prefer the build quality of the Mozart.

I would not have bought the Mozart had I known the gun metal case was super slippery (for those people with clean, non-greasy hands) and the flashlight app (I made good use of the one on my HD2 so yes, I miss it) doesn't work.
My advise, go for the Trophy

The blur is probably because a phone's shape doesn't lend itself to taking a shot AND holding the phone still. Also, the sensor is teensy tiny, and it doesn't have a very fast "shutter speed". So, it's like taking pics with an SLR in dim light with a 1/30 second shutter: it's going to have motion blur w/o a stand. If you want crystal clear shots, use a vise/stand of some kind.
Maybe Canon's or Nikon's next pro-sumer DSLR will make/receive calls, texts, and play Angry Birds.
I use CameraZoomFX which lets me prop the phone and 'tell' the camera to take the picture hands-free. Those shots are always very clear. Handheld shots, not so much.

Okay, I'm lost....
Can anyone who still had pics prior to the leaks and NOW have one of the leaks post comparison pics? I mean seriously, as crisp as the photos are on GB, I can't see how there's such a need for enhancement to the razr's photo quality that it warrants a full thread. lol I'm still on a totally stock GB rom (anxiously biting my nails waiting for the update) and I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED at how crisp and detailed the camera's photos are.
Lol. Calls will be short with that lens on there. It would be funny though, seeing how huge people's arms get from holding a 4 kilo phone all day. They'd look like hermit crabs.
yeah its with ics leaks .204 let me look at my fb pictures maybe i got one with GB
i found one with GB
BTW - I've tried all of the "pro" camera apps available, and Camera FV-5 is easily the best one.
As to pictures on ICS vs GB, at least on .79, there isn't a huge change. It's all in the app you use.
The stock camera app on ICS seems to focus better prior to capture.
A good camera app should be able to take the same quality pic on GB as it would on ICS unless there was a flaw in the camera drivers under GB, which I don't think there was.
The Razr seems to have a decent sensor, but cheap / small optics. Don't get me wrong, it does take pretty good shots, but not like you'd see on a newer device with bigger, higher quality lenses. The sensor is only half of the battle, but people give the megapixel count all of their attention.
Some of the newer cams (like the OneX) have better optics and you can tell the difference right away. Plus a bigger lens helps keep noise down in dark shots.

What screen mode do you prefer?

Seemingly to counter the LCD owners moaning about AMOLEDs vibrant colours Samsung has added an extra mode to the S3 screen settings.. 'Natural'. We now have 4 modes.
Dynamic
Standard
Natural
Movie
There is also a temperature option within the videoplayer itself to further tweak the look.
Which do you prefer?
Natural all the way. Once you use it for a while Dynamic and standard look a little too gimmicky..
Actually prefer standard! Natural and movie look too washed out and dynamic looks too saturated.

I hate the sharpening artefacts brought by the dynamic and normal modes. Just look at the signal bar. I personally use the movie mode.

Nah, it doesn't have any of the "scanline-ish" stuff you see on the pictures, it's the camera's macro mode.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
Maybe not the scanlines, but my galaxy s ii with low resolution and dithering can look like a windows 95 machine with only 256 colors when viewing many pictures. Giant blocks of limited colors and shades. They just happen to be very very saturated, and dark.
And thanks for the picture comparison. It was so nicely shot I was debating whether it was a screencap or not. I guess it is still hard to judge though since I am viewing these pictures right now on an IPS monitor. Even if I viewed them on my s2 with superamoled, there's no guarantee with all the image processing from the camera and my phone, but the comparison makes its point in regards to the color differences between the modes.

Only movie mode disables the horrible sharpening artifacts. But out looks way too wash out and too warm. What I do is use power save level 1 in browser.
Wish there was a mode between Natural and Standard. Natural is just a tad bit too washed out, but Standard is way too overexposed.

I agree. Standard is oversaturated, while natural is undersaturated.
I voted dynamic, but i think it depends a lot on the wallpaper you have and its colors. if my wallpaper had vibrant colors I think I'd tone it down
There is however a too high blue tint on the screen. Can this be solved?
I'm really curious to see what devs can do about this and I agree that a mode between 'natural' and 'standard' is needed. Or better yet, the ability for users to set their own custom modes. I wonder too if it will be possible for devs to remove the white shadow that appears around text, especially over grey backgrounds.
With proper tweaking, I think the SGS3 screen will look as good as the one on the HOX but there's still a lot of work to be done...

The white shadows around text are sharpening artifacts. That looks bad enough but the sharpening also make text appears grey instead of black and lowers the contrast. Using the level 1 power saving mode in browser turns off the sharpening and improves text appearance but makes the display slightly bluish.

Camera Disussion

It's funny how people stress over the smallest differences, and it's amazing how good camera phones have become over the last few years.
I chose the One because I feel it's the most flexible overall due to low-light performance and the ability to better capture motion, but man, all of these cameras are so good, it's crazy to think what we were using just 2 or 3 years ago.
Hmm, i actually found it to be opposite for me - my htc one seems to do very poorly with motion and focuses very slowly. Surprisingly because every literature mentions its good low light performance and fast focus. If you guys can answer a few questions for me, it would allow me to determine if my hardware is defective and i need to exchange for another copy:
1. if you try to focus on a moving object (say a child or a pet), can you consistently get non blurry picture? i find it very hard/slow for the htc one's camera to get focus, so it makes a clear pic of a moving object very hard
2. can you take a picture and have the entire picture be in focus? for me, the lens will only focus on one part of a screen, while other parts will consistently be blurry. by default that's in the center of the picture. it almost seems like you can't do an infinity focus, something needed/preferred for landscape and group pictures. I like the brokah look, just not ALL the time..
Thanks in advance!
1st- I had my kids spinning on a tired swing, not super fast but they were swinging in a circle and spinning and I was able to get consistent focused pictures.
2nd- Yes my camera focus is fine. the HDR mode does tend to wash out in bright light and makes it look a little out of focus.
Note
I also took a series of photos as fast as my finger could click while my daughter was on the tire swing and they all came out in focus, maybe one or two out of focus but I would have to go through them and check more closely.
Hmmm, i'm both happy and sad to hear that your camera seems to work much better. Okay back to AT&T store then!
Thanks!

Digital zoom is bad. I suggest NEVER using it. Crop the picture later if need be.
I guess this would be a decent thread to ask, since we're talking about the camera.
Is the camera software OTA update already included with the AT&T One's latest software, or are we already behind in terms of updates? Also, if our phone doesn't yet have the updated camera software, could we just flash an international stock ROM and get it? International ROMs work with our One this time around, as far as I know.
I believe the update software version is 1.29...mine says 1.26...

You're right. The 1.29 firmware is included in some recent custom roms, though. I have a couple of roms based around that update.

The latest OTA from AT&T has the same radio as the 1.29 update. Still 1.26 firmware though.
When I take macro shots of documents, the letters are blurry and bad in quality. Taking macro shots of food and flowers comes out okay, but it's just awful when taking photos of black and white paper.
On the pic I attached, the lower right appears to be blurry and light ink. They are actually very dark black letters printed out from a laser printer, so I don't know what's going on.
I have 1.29.401.13 base.
Here's another photo where sides and corners are unusable. This is just horrible... Can't even read the letters any more.
I was comparing the camera vs my s3 and looked at my table with my one and it took this for a picture and my s3 did not do the lines

This comparison was terrible lol They chose the S4 even when it got beat a couple times. Samsung cameras are usually great but that comparison wasnt good at all, there are better ones out there.
Lol I agree big time and they had to of known they were wrong but oh well people are crazy

I think the htc one has a more realistic colors.

Try using text mode instead, it makes the text much darker.

Ya, it was bad, but I wanted to use a review that wasnt completely positive. Especially the picture they used without trying to fix the focus inssue their One was having.

I tried that, and it just boosts the contrast producing lots of noise, and there are still blurry letters. I think there's something seriously wrong with the camera.
Sunny out door photo. All grainy on the upper left where the building is with blue sky.

Not satisfied with the camera

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
